    Pros mentioned:
    Features, Price, Sound quality

Pros, 1. Supports about almost every audio format. Dolby Atmos and DTS-X are there being the newest and best ones. 2. Has a clean passthrough for sound and video. 3. 7.2 of course which can be changed to 5.1.2 or 5.2.2 for Dolby Atmos with 2 subwoofers. 4. Very good build quality with solid parts. This weights a little more than my Onkyo 5.1 receiver and is also smaller so I get more air circulation and the receiver runs cooler. 5. It support HDR and Dolby Vision. 6. Contrary to a lot of other reviews say I didn't find it hard to setup and the remote control and receiver menu I thought were fairly good. 7. This is louder than my Onkyo 5.1 receiver at lower volume levels. It definitely more powerful and efficient. 8. This is the biggest, the sound quality for the money is exceptional in my opinion. I've listened to receivers that cost 2 to almost 3 times as much that were on par with this receiver. 9. It has all the connections I personally need plus some. Cons, 1. Extremely hard to get(at least in my area). These receivers sellout fast and I had to order one which took almost week for me to get. I would've waited an extra day if I did a store pickup. 2. Most of the speaker connections are wire clamps and they don't fit the biggest wire sizes. I got some 16 gauge wire and it seems to work good, but I'd be careful about going to a 14 or 12. Because of all this banana plugs are out of the question. 3. It's not a 9.2 or higher, but you get what you pay for. 4. This unit doesn't support 4ohz speakers. I'm running 2 6ohz front channels, 2 6ohz Dolby Atmos enabled, 1 6ohz center channel and 2 8ohz back surround speakers, they fit the specs and seem to run great. 5. This is louder than my Onkyo 5.1 receiver, but it's not going to fill large rooms very well in my opinion nor power bigger speakers. This unit is most ideal for a small to possibly a mid sized room depending on your ceiling height. If you have a mid sized room with a ceiling smaller than 10 feet in my opinion I think you'd be fine running this receiver. 6. It only has one HDMI ARC out and only 4 HDMI inputs. It doesn't have WIFI nor ethernet which doesn't bother me because my TV supplies those things. Connections can be limited to people looking to hook up more one TV and have more than one audio zone. 7. It doesn't accept wireless speakers. All in all I'm very happy with this receiver. For it's price in my opinion it can't be easily beat for it's sound quality and the features it offers. Living in a small place it's perfect for my needs plus some, I love the extra headroom. Now if you're a serious audiophile I'd have to say save up and buy at least a 9.2 system with more feature. Overall this is the best starting point receiver for someone building a home theater system in my opinion.

    Display, Menus

You got a lot of features and bang for your buck with this receiver. Dolby Atmos and DTS X support, along with the ability to connect to a 5.1.2 speaker setup is very impressive at this price. Another great supported area is dinner if the newer more advanced video features, including 4k, HDR (HDR 10, Dolby Vision and HLG). Sound Setup is easy for the most part. The included microphone listens at your sitting position and adjusts the speaker volume for the optimal experience. The sound quality is really good, especially if you have the option to take advantage of an Atmos setup. Be sure to set your input to the "enhanced" setting under the source format HDMI settings for HDR support on the receiver. Pros: Features! Atmos, DTS X, HDR and 4k, easy setup Cons: the lack of on screen menus for all options can be a bit frustrating at times.

I replaced a 20+ year old Sony Receiver. When I came to Best Buy, I had a consultant come andnoook at my situation. The measurement on the So y, which was on sale, were perfect. The power is so much more than my old one. The quality is great.

I’ve burned through several receivers over the last 20 years – and have kept upgrading my equipment to match the technology it drives – and this Sony DH790 is no exception as I needed it to handle my 4K TV and my first attempt at Dolby Atmos sound. What is Atmos? It’s even greater surround sound – based on sounds objects vs sound channels. It’s been described as “To help deliver this vision, Atmos equipped cinemas have side speakers that start from the edge of the screen and go all around the auditorium, additional subwoofers and two speaker arrays going directly overhead. Since its launch Atmos has been installed on over 650 screens in 40 countries, including 9 screens in the UK, and 120 films have been made with Dolby Atmos soundtracks, including Gravity, Godzilla and X-Men: Days of Future Past.” One of the first things I noticed with this unit is the accuracy of the sound setup with the microphone. Set the microphone on your favorite seat and run through your speakers – it’s adjust the sound automatically and accurately – more than I can say for many of the receivers I’ve owned. As experienced with many other users, I can finally hear my rear speakers for both movie viewing and audio listening! With more than enough power, 4K and 3D pass through features and very reasonable price – you can go wrong if you’re in the market for a solid receiver!

First if you listen to this on max volume its going to over heat and shut off. I had to out 2 of my pc fans on it to keep it cool. I took it with me once, and had to run the ac to keep it working, and that was a 50 degree day with the window open. The sound quailty is good though, I use 2 klipsch book shelves, the 5.1 klipsch set, and 2 120 12inch klisch subwoofers.I use it for elder scrolls online with my pc through dolby atmos, does the surround great. Comes through all channels correct. Mind you in order for this to work, you will need intel and a high end mother board. The bypass on this reciever is low end, it can't do anything over 60hz, and it can't do 4k right either. It can do 4k 420 with no hdr. So what you need to do is hook your graphics card up to hdmi 1, then your intel onboard to 2, set it up as a second monitor open the dolby atmos app and tell it to use the intel, then switch back. I also use it for Amazon ultra hd music through my mother board optical port. Let me tell you if you listen to music this is better than anything you can get through Bluetooth, car recivers, or mp3. Mind you it doesn't go loud enough for 24 but sound but it does hit 100 dbs so 16bit works. I tried a mp3 the highest quality 360kbps, turned it all the way up and it sounded like all the speakers were blown. When I first got it, did the same thing with my Bluetooth phone. With Amazon HD music and optical out 16bit you can crank this to max and it sounds crystal clear. Mind you most people can't handle it, it hits as I said over 100 dbs. I also use it for dolby atmos blu rays through my Xbox, which makes it sound better than movies in the movie theater. I was watching pet cemetery and the tractor trailer went by my entire family jumped including me, and they weren't even watching it haha. I can't believe I use to listen to such low quailty, music, games, and movies. Want to add the microphone that is included is to automatically set up the 7 speakers, and subwoofers.

Good, but not great entry-level receiver

    Posted .
    Pros mentioned:
    Ease of use, Features, Price

I received this product for my fair and unbiased review. TL;DR - The Sony STR-DH790 is a great start for those who want a home theater but don't want to spend a lot of money. While only sporting a few ports (4 HDMI inputs, NO FRONT PANEL HDMI, 4 analog audio inputs, NO PHONO INPUT, two digital audio inputs, no analog video inputs) and no network connectivity, it does feature built-in bluetooth and HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 and support for the common HDR formats (HDR10, Dolby Vision, and Hybrid Log Gamma). Sound is crisp and clean, though it doesn't as as much power as a midrange or high-end receiver; two subwoofer outs and the ability to bi-amp your front speakers in a 2 channel or 5.1 channel setup is a nice touch, however; the bi-amping feature makes this a good receiver option for a listening room on a budget. On-screen prompts are easy to understand and concise. The only downfall is Sony didn't use banana plug-compatible speaker connectors for every speaker connection, just the front speakers. All in all, it's a good option for those on a budget that only have a few devices to connect (streamer box, Blu-Ray, cable/satellite box, and game console or living room PC). ------------------------------------------------------------------ Full review: Setting up the Sony was pretty easy. Being that I currently have a home theater receiver (Onkyo TX-NR717), I just removed my current receiver and connected the STR-DH790 (from here on out known as the Sony) in its place. The first thing I noticed was the lack of HDMI ports on the Sony; being that I was going from a midrange receiver to a low-end model, I did expect that I'd be short a port or two. I ended up moving my NES Mini and SNES Mini closer to my TV and just connecting them to the TV while I was testing the Sony. Note that you probably don't want anyone home while you do speaker calibration with this receiver; it's LOUD and it takes a little while to do. But once it's done, you find that it's worth it as your speakers will sound great after they're calibrated. I was using Energy Take Classics in a 7 channel configuration, using my rear surrounds as rear speakers and my surround channels (which are mounted over my seating area) as my Atmos/DTSX vertical channels. I also used a pair of Onkyo speakers that came with a HTIB I purchased over a decade ago just to see how it would perform with low-end speakers - it's nowhere near as crisp as it could be. For testing, I used a few Blu-Rays in the collection (Star Wars - the Last Jedi, Suicide Squad), a couple of movies from Vudu, Amazon, and Netflix (streaming through my Apple TV 4K), and Dolby Atmos and DTSX testing material played through my computer (Core i7 with a Radeon RX550 video card and HDMI set for bitstream audio output). The Apple TV and computer both support HDR10, and the Apple TV supports Dolby Vision, but my TV set (a Sony XBR850C) with the current firmware supports HDR10 and HLG, so the only HDR format I was able to test was HDR10. (Note - Sony TVs and receivers usually integrate with each other, but I didn't see if this did or not as the TV didn't make it obvious.) The results were spectacular, however. 4K HDR playback was flawless and the audio had a very encompassing feeling. While watching a streaming copy of Sing, my kid would look around the living room as the sound field fooled him into thinking he was in the Moon Theater. Bass management was also great, as the receiver pulled the audio too low for the Energy Take Classics to play and sent it to my subwoofer. The only complaint - and again, this is to be expected for this receiver - is it isn't as loud as my Onkyo can be, but since it's not as powerful, that's expected. Bluetooth functionality was also pretty good. While the sound quality isn't as good as AirPlay or direct playback, it's good enough for 90% of people. DSD and 192/24 audio files sounded amazing, considering the price of the receiver. The changes I'd make this this receiver: Banana jack-capable speaker connectors for all 7 channels 2 more HDMI ports, including 1 up front Phono connector Network connectivity Analog video conversion (2 composite, 2 component) Would I make this unit my daily driver? Probably not, as I like it loud. However, for anyone looking at forming the foundation of their home theater, this is a terrific start. The only word of advice I'd give you is don't skimp on speakers - honestly, better speakers make even low-end equipment sound better.

This receiver works great with my in-ceiling six speaker system that came with the house. Love the ability to bluetooth connect my phone and play music through the system. As a newbie to receivers, it took a couple of hookup attempts to figure out the way the wires twisted on and to figure out which speaker should connect where. The where issue was primarily due to my house's built in configuration, not the receiver's fault.

I haven't used Atmos speakers with it yet. But they are very good for the price.im looking to upgrade as I don't think it's powerful enough for the Klipsch speakers. If you love blasting music loud or w.e I HIGHLY Recommend buying an external fan. I bought one from AC infinity. It does get hot to the touch.

This was such a great purchase for the price considering all of the features and the price if similar Dolby Atmos receivers. I replaced an old Pioneer receiver. This works well with my Vizio P65 tv with ARC because I can use my tv or Roku remote to change the volume of the receiver. The receiver also turns on and off automatically thought ARC which is great. The display on the receiver is helpful because it shows the audio mode such as Atmos. I'm no audiophile but I highly recommend this if you'd like something reasonably priced with great sound and functionality.

The on device screen is a little small and there is no way, that I have found, to pause it's scroll. I will also say that the mode you need to use for most things including Dolby Atmos and most surround is oddly named "Multi Stereo", and in some section of the manual this setting is described as outputting stereo sound to all speakers. with a little digging I have found that this setting is basically the "auto detect" setting that outputs whatever encoding the device is sending it. I would have liked to see dedicated buttons for each input instead of the dial, but I guess I don't use the on device button enough for this to be a deal breaker.

I bought this last week so I can have a good quality 4K receiver for the upcoming release of the PS5 and MAN did this not disappoint. Not only did it make my Xbox One S look great in 4K but even my classic PS4 (not the PRO) as well! I never seen the colors pop out so beautifully that I may have to re watch some films I own just to see the differences. On top of that, the sound actually makes you feel like you're in a movie theater. Hearing the Tie Fighters from a Star Wars film fly around and shoot their lasers or playing a multiplayer match on Call of Duty and hearing the enemy footsteps getting closer and closer never sounded so amazing. If you're wondering if you should upgrade and get this, do yourself a favor and please do. You will NOT be disappointed. Works great with my LG 60inch UJ6300.

This receiver is nice, but could have used easier to understand instructions for a few key features. I still haven't figured out how to set it up with 2 subwoofers correctly. Setting up the various surround options is easy enough though. The audio modes it has to be on for your surround to work correctly are also a little confusing to understand, especially for anyone that isn't fluent in current home theater tech.

The sound is fine although I have not yet had time to fine tune it. The price wasn't great. Unfortunately this is our second unit because the first arrived damage with loose parts jiggling around inside and then took a month to get refunded to my credit card.
