Output is fine ... annoying issue on startup

The sound output is fine. However, I cannot believe that I did not see called out in the reviews I checked before purchase the issue with the receiving requiring you to select the desired input each time it starts. So if you primarily use the receiver with your TV, you will need to use the Sony AV remote to select the input each time you turn the TV on. You can search for this on the sony forums and find the users reporting the same concern. Sony basically advises this is expected functionality and apparently it works better with a Sony TV. So beware of you are looking to pair this receiver with a non -Sony TV. I asked a question about this functionality in this best buy Q/A section a while back and one person suggested buying a $100 all in one remote and program it. You decide how much sense that makes, especially if you primarily use an X1 remote. I posted in the Sony forum a request for an updated firmware to resolve this issue. I will revisit this review if Sony looks to address this concern. See here for the sony forum reporting this issue: https://ap.community.sony.com/s/question/0D50B00004NYJa4/after-turning-on-my-new-sony-strdh590-av-receiver-the-home-menu-comes-up-on-my-tv-i-have-to-press-the-home-button-in-order-for-it-to-disappear-im-searching-for-a-fix-so-i-dont-have-to-dismiss-the-home-screen-on-each-startup?t=1546995982907

I bought this system to replace a 10yr old Sony DAV 500 series Theater in a Box that still worked. This model was on sale, and I figured that I couldn't wrong with the Sony brand give the 10 years of use I got of the last one. Here's my review starting with the good: Pros: Setup wasn't extremely complicated All of the HDMI ports are 4K passthrough with HDCP 2.2 Good mix of input types HDMI, RCA, Optical and etc. Cons: 1. Only 4 HDMI inputs...some people need more 2. Hard to find advanced spearker settings 3. Music sounded great, but movies were a different story. I could hear explosions wonderfully, but couldn't hear the actors speaking as clearly as I would have liked. This really showed up whenever I watched anything with a Brittish or Australian cast. 4. Defaulted to Night Mode every time you power the system up 5. Couldn't hear a difference between ProLogic 2 or DTS Bottom line I'm taking it back and getting the Denon 1400

Sounds Great But... Annoying Home Screen pops up

When ever you turn on the TV, HOME SCREEN pops up. You need to wait an unusually long time for it to go away or hit Home button on TV. After an exhausting internet search, it is by design. If you hook up ARC to TV - it will not appear. After figuring out how to turn on feature that allows sound to come from SMART TV this DUMB Feature occurs. Solution, have data only go TV not Back to unit. So if you use Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube... Turn off Stereo and use TV Volume only. This set up was for my Senior Parents. They expect it to work when you turn it on with ONE remote. It got old in 3 days. Returned and shopping for a new solution.

Why have a system that requires a separately powered subwoofer? This device is expensive enough and powerful enough to directly power a subwoofer. Why must I buy a whole, separately powered subwoofer. I can see offering it as an option, but I should also have the option of simply running a subwoofer directly from this receiver. As a result of this gripe, I returned it and bought a conventional home theater system.

    Worked fine, until it didn't

The receiver worked fine... easy setup and use. 6 months after purchased, the audio died. I ran all of the troubleshooting tips, to no avail. Then, the receiver just started turning off on its own. It's now dead to me and will be replaced.

Sound and picture were good. Speaker calibration a bit tricky. In less than a month, inputs failed. Support wanted to take two weeks to fix it. Luckily Best Buy allowed me to return it.

      Hi moomoo,

Make sure nothing is blocking the Infrared (IR) sensor on the AV Receiver. Some locations or TV stand designs can interfere with the IR signal from the remote control. Glass enclosures, as well as fluorescent or halogen lights, may prevent the IR signal from reaching the AV Receiver.
