Customers have good things to say about the picture quality, color accuracy, and ease of use of the 77" Class BRAVIA 8 OLED 4K UHD Smart Google TV (2024). However, some customers reported issues with the TV unexpectedly turning off and on, and a limited number of HDMI 2.1 ports. A few users also mentioned software-related problems, such as freezing or restarting. Overall, the positive feedback on image quality outweighs the negative comments regarding reliability and connectivity.

Regret buying this TV. In light scenes the picture is amazing but oled is supposed to shine in dark scenes. Unfortunately there are vertical lines or banding that show up in dark scenes especially in panning scenes that are super distracting and completely take away from the picture. Looks like someone ran a paint brush down the screen in most dark scenes, it has terrible screen uniformity. Wish I hadn’t returned an LG C4 for this TV.

Totally blown away with this 77" oled TV. I wasn't really sure about it when I went to replace my 75" Sony xr950 that died unexpectedly. I mean looking at all of the reviews from the major reviewers saying that there were much better panels available that cost less. But I digress. I wasn't really wanting another oled since I had prior bad luck with burn-in with a couple of them. I went in fully expecting to get a Bravia 7 or 9 mini led for my replacement TV. That wasn't what happened. I had the opportunity to have a side-by-side comparison with a 85" Bravia 9 and the 77" Bravia 8 and got to play around with the settings on both . While the Bravia 9 certainly was exceptional and much brighter, I was blown away with the clarity of details and the inky blacks . Yes I know that I'm not a certified calibrator, but I know enough to do a decent job of tweaking a few things to make it look pretty good. Yes the Bravia 9 is excellent, there is no doubt about that, but what I saw side-by-side and couple with the price difference showed a clear winner. Now I know that the Bravia 8 doesn't have all of the settings that the other Sony panels have, and that isn't right IMHO, however I have since concluded that I can live without spending more money to have it professionally calibrated and use that money towards finishing my ceiling atmos speakers install. While my finances aren't a concern to many, I'm quite sure there are others who are in a similar situation and have to weigh the trade offs in the price differences in their decision process. That being said, I am still amazed at the picture quality this set produces. I also suggest that people go to ytube and search for 4k and watch some of the remarkable videos that are shot in 8k and 120fps and really look at them on any set they are considering. The Bravia 8 (atleast on mine) will simply amaze you.

Hi MikeMcAtee, that's an incredibly insightful 5-star review for the Sony BRAVIA 8! We are absolutely thrilled you're totally blown away by your new 77" OLED, especially after your previous experiences with OLEDs. Your side-by-side comparison with the BRAVIA 9, highlighting the BRAVIA 8's clarity of details and inky blacks, clearly shows why you chose it. We're delighted you're amazed by the picture quality, and your practical approach to value and budget, along with your YouTube content recommendation, is invaluable for others. Thank you so much for sharing your comprehensive and enthusiastic feedback and for choosing Sony! Best regards, -Dominick

We've had our Bravia 8 for 4 weeks now. We love it!
The build quality is top notch and the Google OS is easy to use. Some reviewers have put this TV lower than it's competitors (C4 & S90D) when it comes to brightness. Our living room is a little brighter than some so I was worried about watching content during a sunny day. 100% not a problem! Does it get LCD bright, no but it's not dim by any means.
The picture is amazing! If you want to see what it can really do, look up the HDR Superchannel on YouTube and you won't be disappointed! I've been re-watching movies also, and they look so much better on this OLED.

I was really on the edge about spending $800 more for this Sony OLED vs the LG.
I had a QLED previous to this because of the lighting in my previous home. I am glad the salesman advised us Sony is the best OLED on the market, he was right.
I have had it installed for a week now and am blown away by the quality. It is much better than the QLED I had, even though that was an 85" and only 1 year old. The only way to get better than this TV is to go bigger but our space did not allow that. If you are in the market for a new TV and want a home theater experience this is it. Everything looks so good on here.
We had it delivered by best buy because we did not have a pickup truck and installed it ourselves. If you can find your studs in your walls you should not have a problem, my husband and I lifted it up easily onto the wall mount.

I did a lot of research on the OLEDs in my price range and I found this TV suited me best. I read the reviews on multiple websites and was between the LG C4, Samsung S90d and this Sony Bravia 8. I ultimately choose the Sony Bravia 8 after seeing it at Bestbuy and comparing it to the Samsung and LG. You can’t go wrong with any of these TVs but I just preferred the Sony Picture and processing over the comp but would have love all three sets. I mainly wanted it to watch football with friends and family and this Sony was it for me. Speakers were better than LG and Samsung and although I have a soundbar, I don’t always have it on and use the TV speakers more than the soundbar. If you’re a Samsung or LG fan, or not a Sony fan, you will love the other OLEDs as well. My only recommendation is go see the TVs in person and watch the demos if you can. You’re forking out the money not any reviewing site so see them for yourself and get which one that works for you. Just reading reviews, I was going for the Samsung but no Dolby Vision gave me pause and went to BestBey to see if I needed it. That’s when I truly feel in love with this Sony. Samsung did have amazing color and brightness, LG great overall with better upscaling and motion than Samsung , but Sony had the features I wanted and went in that direction, to me Sony had the best motion processing and better picture though not as bright as the Samsung.

The 77” OLED screen on this model is absolutely breathtaking. With OLED technology, each pixel emits its own light, delivering incredible contrast and vibrant colors. The 4K resolution is crystal clear, and HDR content shines with a wide range of detail in both bright and dark scenes. Sony’s Cognitive Processor XR is impressive, optimizing the picture quality dynamically, which makes scenes appear more lifelike and sharp. The contrast is deep, blacks are true black (typical for OLED), and colors are well balanced without feeling oversaturated.

The picture is the best I have ever seen on a screen. No issues, except one small gripe.
The plastic cover surrounding the screen while it was in the box somehow left a residue on the bottom right of the screen. I don’t dare try and remove it or clean it.
You cannot see it while the screen is on, but it is slightly annoying to look at for it being a many thousand $$$$ screen. Makes me wonder why they couldn’t have applied a protective film in addition for the packaging.
Small issue. The picture on this screen is magnificent.

Thank you for your great review, HENNEXE! We are absolutely thrilled to hear that the BRAVIA 8 has the best picture you've ever seen.
The OLED panel is designed to deliver those incredible black levels, and it's wonderful to know you're seeing that difference. With Acoustic Surface Audio+, the sound comes directly from the screen, creating a truly immersive experience that perfectly matches the magnificent picture you mentioned.
We are so sorry for the residue left on the bottom right of the screen. We understand how frustrating it is to have even a small issue like that on such a high-end product. We take your feedback seriously and will absolutely share your valuable suggestion about adding a protective film to the packaging with our development team. Excellent TV. I purchased an open box for $500 off the sale price. Once you dial in the settings, the picture is excellent. Due to the operating system and build quality, I decided on Sony over SAMSUNG and LG. Research showed that Samsung has lost its way with quality control and LG OS become sluggish over time. Brightness was not a issue as its dark room.

Great TV. Excellent motion handling. Great performance with colors. I do wish the highlights could get brighter, or that the colors could pop more. Regardless, the TV looks great. Brightness can really pop in Dolby Vision and my complaints quickly fade away. I didn't even know about the reality creation feature until I was fiddling with settings. It is an amazing feature that you should try if you own a Sony that supports it. It can bring about some details that can be hidden, even in 4k native content. Low res content gets a nice detail bump from it.
This TV does come with quirks that may effect you. As of the firmware out in November 2024, when you want to use Dolby Vision from a video source, like an AppleTV, and 120hz/VRR signal, like from a PS5, and you connect them to the same HDMI source through an AVR, like a Denon x4800h, you will unfortunately not be able to activate both the PS5 or AppleTV's fullest features without continually flipping through Enhanced and Enhanced/VRR settings on the Sony. You can get either Dolby Vision at 24hz or 60hz, but you cannot also get 120hz/VRR when you switch your AVR to the PS5. Vice versa, you can get 120hz/VRR from your PS5, but you won't be able to get Dolby Vision from your AppleTV or UB820-K. This is something to do with the EDID and effects others Sony TVs like the A95L. Sony is aware of the issue and I hope they are working on a fix. You can check their support page if you want to verify the issue. You will also find this issue discussed on AV Forums.
The workaround is to hook one device up AVR and one direct to the TV. For me that meant the PS5 goes directly to the TV and my video sources to the AVR. While it isn't currently effecting me, it kind of sucks that now I actually do need to worry about the HDMI 2.1 inputs in the TV because my AVR cannot be fully utilized. First world problems, but maybe this can be fixed with a firmware patch in the future...
Other quirks are that this TV sometimes fights me with what audio output mode I'd like to use. I have no idea why it thinks I'd use the TV Speakers over my external speakers, but it happens sometimes. Maybe it is a latency issue with the bootup from the Denon and the TV.
Regardless, some niche positives with the TV are that you can see detailed input signal info from a menu option for your standard content as well as a different version of the same information in game mode. This will include color depth, and resolution, audio signal. The game mode detailed info also shows current Hz which updates live. I do wish that game details would stay on the screen longer, but it is at least nice to have.
I also really like that I did NOT have to sign into a google account to use the TV and that it did not try to hide that option. Because I didn't sign into google, I am not dealing with all the bologna ads and bloat. It lets you set it up as a "dumb" TV, or at least as close as we can get to a dumb tv today.

It's great to hear the picture quality stands out and that it fits beautifully in your living room. Regarding the brief shut-offs you mentioned, we recommend checking for any available software update in Settings > System > About > System Software Update. A full power restart (holding the power button on the remote for a few seconds or unplugging the TV for about a minute) may also help resolve the issue.

TV setup was straightforward and easy with two people. Super convenient that the stand legs can be attached at two different widths and heights on the TV.
Picture quality is wonderful. Built-in picture modes are pretty well optimized and there are plenty of tools for individualizing (as well as some audio sliders).
PS5 and Xbox Series X games are beautiful and lag-free. There's a Dolby Game mode, plus the 'regular' game picture mode.
Speaking of audio, the spatial speakers work well and provide a nice little 3D effect, for media that supports it of course (from my experience, mostly newer video games and Blu-rays).
One of my favorite features is an auto-slideshow option that helps prevent burn-in (and are beautiful, like the pics that would be on a store display).
Only downside for me so far is that the TV gets used half the time for standard (480p-720p), older television shows. TV has post-processing and sharpness options to help accommodate for this. From 20+ feet away, the programs look perfect, but from my normal viewing distance (about 12 feet), you'll see some pixelation and cloudiness, though this shouldn't be unexpected.
All around a wonderful, hopefully decades-plus long, investment.

When we purchased this TV, I was looking at other, equally impressive televisions. But the salesman mentioned that the Bravia 8 I was looking at was made to be paired with the PS5 gaming system.
There are a couple of extra functions that are available when the 2 units are paired together.
The only issue I had with the TV so far, the PS5 and TV did not sync seamlessly. I had to google my issues to learn what settings to change to get my game system to work with the Bravia.

This is an OLED TV. I do not recommend for outdoors or for watching in brightly lit rooms. I knew this going in. We have this TV in a room which has variable lighting, and I have automation which dims the lights automatically when the unit is powered on. Don't' get me wrong though. The TV can be used with typical room lighting. I'm just being a perfectionist.
That all being said, this quality of the picture is outstanding. This is a videophile's TV. OLED is known for its deep blacks. This TV does not disappoint in that regard. I found that the default contrast was too much, so I lowered the contrast slightly.
I have the unit connected to an external 7.2.4 Atmos sound system. When she watches by herself, my wife likes to watch and listen to the TV sound. But for me, the external sound is way better than the TV sound.
Since the TV features eArc, Atmos and other hi-res sound formats can be piped from the TV to the external sound system. This allows steamed content with Atmos to come fully alive. Not to mention the bass!
The AppleTV TV app is buggy. It randomly switches into sub-title mode even if the material is English. No problem with other TV apps - Amazon, Curiosity Stream, Netflix. Since I have an AppleTV+ box, I use that for watching AppleTV.
OLED TVs can have burn-in issues. This TV has features which minimize and even correct burn-in. But I still try to avoid keeping stable content on for long periods.

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback on your k77xr80, Bobthehack. Your insights are incredibly valuable, and it’s wonderful to hear you’re enjoying the outstanding picture quality and deep blacks that OLED technology delivers—especially in a variable lighting environment with your automation setup.
We appreciate your honest comments regarding brightness performance in well-lit and outdoor rooms. OLED excels at delivering immersive visuals, especially in home theater settings, but we recognize that optimal results are achieved when ambient lighting is controlled, just as you described. Your approach with automation is a great example for others considering similar environments.
It’s fantastic that you’re making use of the TV’s advanced audio features, like eARC and support for Dolby Atmos and high-resolution sound formats. Many customers enjoy using these features to connect their audio systems and enhance their viewing experience, as you do with your 7.2.4 Atmos setup.
Thank you for calling out the adjustable picture settings and your experience with contrast—feedback like yours helps other users customize their viewing experience for personal preference.
Regarding your note about the AppleTV app switching to subtitles unexpectedly, we apologize for any inconvenience. While this appears to be limited to the AppleTV app, we appreciate you bringing it to our attention. We continuously work with app developers to support compatibility and user experience. In the meantime, using an external AppleTV device is a great solution.
We’re pleased you recognize the built-in features designed to reduce the risk of possible OLED burn-in, and we encourage best practices—such as avoiding long periods of static images—as you mentioned.
Thank you again for your balanced and thoughtful review. If you have any further suggestions or questions, please let us know. We hope your k77xr80 continues to provide many outstanding entertainment experiences. Thanks again for choosing Sony.
