Love the quality and processing of Sony TV’s, I’d say I still wish it was brighter in HDR. I debated to just getting the A95L in 77 inch but really wanted the 83. This is my only complaint and some minor banding in the picture which my Sony A8H and Sony A90J do not have.

Hi Jreeder,
That's great! Choosing this TV will definitely be worth it. We are happy that you give the product a perfect rating! It's really wonderful to hear you love the exceptional picture and you appreciate the revolutionary processor on this Sony A80L TV. Your feedback is extremely important to us and is very much appreciated. Peak luminance determines how bright it's going to actually be on the average. Now if you love a really bright TV, peak luminance set to high is going to make you very happy. For HDR, you can pull up an HDR video (for ex. in YouTube) and then play around with the peak luminance setting to get what looks best to you. If lines or bands appear in some areas of your OLED screen, please refer to this helpful article link:

Pixelation & Poor Support

I purchased the Sony 83" Class BRAVIA XR A80L OLED through Best Buy, where we've always trusted to make our electronics purchases. Unfortunately, the A80L has been an absolute disappointment. When watching bright, saturated scenes – especially whites, light blues, or bright skies – the TV exhibits significant pixelation that is highly distracting. The pixelation is large enough to be bigger than the size of my hand, ruining the viewing experience, especially in wide, bright scenes like clouds or light-colored backgrounds.
After noticing the issue, I reached out to Best Buy first. They directed me to Sony since the TV was only a few weeks old and still under the manufacturer's warranty. I submitted photos of the issue, and after reviewing them, Sony's engineers confirmed that the pixelation was "normal" and that there was nothing they could do about it. This response is completely unacceptable for a $5,000+ TV. To be told that something as glaring as palm-sized pixelation is considered "normal" is beyond frustrating.
For a TV of this caliber, I expected far better performance, especially from a trusted brand like Sony. Despite multiple attempts for resolution, Sony has been dismissive and unhelpful.
We’ve purchased 24+ Sony TVs over our lifetime, always trusting Sony for their quality and reliability. It was always our go-to brand, but after this experience, we will seriously consider other brands moving forward. If you’re thinking about purchasing this model, be prepared for potential pixelation issues and poor support from Sony. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this TV. The picture quality is severely compromised, and Sony's lack of support makes it even worse. Overall, I’m extremely dissatisfied and regret this purchase.

If you get one that works they are great. If they last 10-15 years they will be even better. Mine lasted 2 DAY’s Yes you read that correctly, 2 DAYS!!!! After a LONG FIGHT with Best Buy and their worthless customer support number I finally got Best Buy geek squad to take the bad one down and put up a new one. No I didn’t pay for it either. Even though they said I would have to.

Sony 83A80L – great high-performance TV

PROS: One of the best TVs for upscaling and processing sub-4K and lower quality/lower bitrate content, outstanding picture quality of 4K content, excellent picture details in both bright and dark scenes, incredibly deep blacks, natural looking picture with excellent contrast and picture depth, vibrant/deep colors, very good picture brightness even for bright room watching, no noticeable auto brightness reduction in any content, smooth video motion, same great picture quality from all viewing angles, good and spatial sound from TV speakers.
CONS: No significant negatives for me, although screen reflections may be important to consider for watching TV in some room setups with lights/daylight coming from reflective angles.
After having 85” Sony Z9K 8K mini-LED LCD TV for two months, I returned it and replaced it with this 83” A80L 4K OLED TV. The Z9K had replaced my 10-year-old Panasonic 65” ZT60 1080p plasma TV (my review of Z9K is also on the Best Buy website). The main reason I returned the Z9K was its somewhat less satisfactory upscaling/processing of sub-4K cable and streaming content that represents a large portion of my TV watching. Also, having a top-quality plasma TV for 10 years, I got used to the near perfect viewing angles, so some picture fading when watching the Z9K from various angles did bother me to some extent, although I would not return it for that reason. The Z9K is a great TV for watching good quality content, but picture details and contrast still look better on the A80L, especially in darker scenes. A80L also has much better picture quality of sub-4K cable and streaming content. In general, LCD TVs, even with thousands of lighting/dimming zones, use each such zone to provide the same light to thousands of adjacent pixels and cannot match the details and contrast of OLED TVs that fully control the light of each individual pixel.
Good quality 1080p Blue-Ray disc movies look great on this TV and some look close to 4K picture quality. Picture quality of 1080/720 content from cable and internet apps like Netflix, Max, YouTube, and Apple TV+ (via the TV apps, Comcast Xfinity X1 4K cable box, and Apple TV 4K box) is very good when the incoming content is of good quality and sometimes looks close to streamed 4K contents. Even lower quality and lower bitrate contents that did not look good on the Z9K (e.g., some sports and some older shows and DVDs) generally look reasonably good on the A80L. It seems that XR Clear Image and 4K Upscaling plus OLED pixel control of A80L help make the picture of lower quality content look good from a typical viewing distance and visibly better than on the 85Z9K and the 65ZT60 plasma TV. Some low-quality content can look reasonably good on a large TV only from farther away.
Good quality 4K content looks brilliant, with deep natural colors, exceptional fine details in both bright and dark scenes, incredibly deep blacks, and outstanding picture contrast and 3D appearance. Small-size HDR highlights in darker scenes look visibly brighter and better defined than on the Z9K that has a lot higher overall brightness capability. HDR highlights within a bright scene do have brighter and more saturated colors on the Z9K. The video motion is very good and smooth, including sports and slow panning scenes. I keep all Eco features and Ambient light sensor turned off.
I prefer to use my Apple TV 4K box for my streaming apps. I have it set to 4K HDR video and to match both Dynamic range and Frame rate of the source video. That way whichever HDR version goes into the TV (Dolby Vision or HDR10) looks very good. I was not fully satisfied with the Apple TV box converting everything to Dolby Vision when I had Dolby Vision enabled on it instead of the general 4K HDR with matching dynamic range. With the above settings, a video is output to the TV as Dolby Vision only if it comes into the Apple TV box as Dolby Vision.
The 83A80L screen is considered glossy, which makes the picture more impactful/vibrant. Depending on the viewing position and angles with windows and other light sources, some reflections can be visible in dark picture areas. It is not an issue or significant distraction for me in my family room TV watching setup with bright daylight (without direct sunlight) and indirect ceiling lights at night, ranging from bright to dark room watching conditions.
A very bright large TV can have some downsides for watching in a low light or dark room, as scenes with large bright areas can become tiring for eyes and be less enjoyable, especially in HDR and when the intensity of screen brightness changes a lot and frequently. You could reduce the overall and peak brightness in TV settings to mitigate these effects, but then darker scenes/areas may become too dark and lose a lot of detail. One can end up changing TV settings frequently based on the content being watched and often during the same show/movie. That was to some extent my experience with the 85” Z9K in low light and dark room conditions, granted Z9K is one of the brightest TVs.
I watch my 83A80L In SDR with Peak luminance on Medium and Brightness at 35/50. For HDR, I have Peak luminance mostly on Medium and Brightness at the HDR default Max, with Gradation preferred for HDR tone mapping. With these settings, the TV is plenty bright even for bright room watching, with strong, naturally looking colors and stunningly deep blacks. All colors look very bright and amazingly deep in OLED/TV demos on YouTube, so this TV can produce very bright vibrant colors when they are as such in the incoming video.
Using the above TV settings, I also played from YouTube the same Sony demo videos that are played on Sony TVs on display at Best Buy. They look brighter and more vibrant on my 83” A80L than on the 77” A80L at Best Buy. Details in dark scenes that were difficult to see or not visible on the 77A80L at Best Buy, like the dark forest details and sunlight shadow details, were much more visible on my 83A80L and looked more like on the 77A95L QD OLED at Best Buy. In Vivid mode on my 83A80L, the Sony demos were very bright with even more vibrant colors and brighter HDR highlights, resembling more how they look on the 77A95L at Best Buy. These are just my indirect comparisons (the photos I took were not even close to how they looked in person), and I don’t know what the picture settings were on the TVs at Best Buy. A95L can, of course, produce much brighter highlights and more saturated brighter colors than A80L. Although the picture of good quality content can still look great in Vivid mode on my 83A80L, it usually looks too bright and less natural to me, and I don’t use Vivid mode for watching regular TV content. Ultimately, the TV provides settings to adjust the picture to personal liking.
The A80L has a screen heat sink in its 83”-size TV, and it does not get much warmer than the room temperature even after many hours of displaying various contents. I have not noticed any screen auto dimming even during many hours of watching bright shows and sports, including some hockey. Some online/YouTube reviews show or state that other, higher brightness OLED TVs may auto dim after a while during bright scenes and become even less bright than the A80L during same scenes. I’ve had no video gaming so far on this TV.
The sound from the TV speakers is good and sounds nicely spatial in the Cinema sound mode. When watching movies, I usually use my home theater sound system with the AV receiver connected to the TV’s optical audio out port. My 83” A80L TV set has a very clean uniform screen with no noticeable color banding or tinting even when watching TV in a completely dark room. Some faint vertical banding was initially visible only on 1% to 10%-white grayscale test slides and only in a fully dark room but is now virtually invisible on the same slides after 2 months of TV use. It was never visible in real TV content even in a fully dark room.
Overall, the 83” A80L performance is close to what various TV reviewers consider the best available consumer TVs. Even though it is not the brightest TV and does not produce the most saturated high luminance colors, it is still very good in those areas while often looking more natural and not being affected by auto dimming. It balances exceptionally well all aspects of best picture quality in all TV contents. Currently, QD OLED TV largest size is 77”, and even best LCD TVs cannot match the individual pixel light control of OLED TVs for best picture details and contrast. So, there are not many TVs in 83” and larger sizes that in my view can outperform the 83A80L in overall picture quality and possibly none when it comes to upscaling and processing sub-4K and lower quality/lower bitrate cable and streaming content (including the recent 2024 TV models, based on various reviews and owner feedback). That said, a different TV may be a more suitable choice for some TV watching conditions, use-case scenarios, TV size, or cost. To me, this 83A80L TV overall performance is 9.5/10.

Hi DarrellM,
We're glad that you like the picture quality of the TV. It's unfortunate that the TV screen is not performing to your expectations.
The LCD screen is made with high-precision technology to achieve a high level of performance and picture quality. To achieve this level of performance, the backlight setting of the TV is set to maximize the screen brightness. However, you may notice uneven brightness on the TV when watching in a dark environment or when the screen is blank. This condition is normal and not a malfunction of the TV.
If you should find this affects your enjoyment, here are few adjustments that you can do to minimize this condition.
Note: Some TVs may not have some of the procedures below. If model-specific information is required to complete any of the steps, refer to your TV's manual (https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/televisions-projectors-oled-tvs-android-/xr-83a80l/manuals)
-Reduce the Backlight Level in the Picture Settings menu. -Turn the Light Sensor setting to On in the Setup menu. -Change the Power Saving setting to Low or High in the Setup menu. -Set the Picture Mode to Standard in the Settings menu.
Hope this helps. In case you need further assistance, please email us at [email protected] with the following details:

Overall excellent tv. I came from Samsung QN900A 85”. I miss the brightness punch of the QLED, but Sony upscaling and picture quality is remarkable. I also went from Samsung QN900 soundbar (and subwoofer and rear speakers) to Sony A9 system with SW5 subwoofer… Wow what a difference the A9 system makes… there’s no comparison… the Sony A9 all daylong. I recommend the A80L especially paired with A9 speakers and SW5 Subwoofer. Truth be told I’m holding out an 83”+ version of Sony A95 QD-OLD series. The brightness punch of QD-OLD and Sony processing… I’ll be the first in line.

We are absolutely thrilled to hear that the XR-83A80L OLED is the best TV you've had in a while and that it's completely elevating your movie nights.
It is incredibly rewarding to know that the pure black levels and very high contrast—hallmarks of a Sony OLED—are making such a significant, positive difference in your viewing experience, especially when coming from another great brand. This phenomenal contrast, along with the rich and true-to-reality colors, is driven by our Cognitive Processor XR™ which is designed to reproduce content the way the human eye sees it, creating incredible depth and realism.
We're also glad to hear that the 83-inch size is the "Wow!" factor and the perfect fit for your living room.

You will never go wrong with Sony TV! From their design to sound & picture quality, everything is perfect. My only complaint is that they downgraded the remote control & it’s very flimsy. The selections on the remote were so small that it’s more difficult to see. I have had so many Sony TVs in the past, i was shocked to see the tiny flimsy remote. That’s something that needs to be brought up to Sony.
Overall, it’s a great TV & I hope they will make bigger than 90”.

I originally purchased this tv as a replacement to smaller 77 inch version on daily deal in Christmas. The image is crisp and clear, not tye brightest tv, but HDR is bright enough(especially in a dark room) i had issues with first panel due to really bad banding, the 2nd unit came in and was pleasantly surprised with how much better it was! Ive had Sony tvs for the last 5 years and hard to switch, but beware of any panel issues due to large size (77 inch is safer)

Excellent TV. Audio is great too with Sony's system that vibrates the screen. It could be a bit brighter, but it's more than enough even with a big window next to it.
Google software is fine, much better than LG's and Samsung's offerings. It's a pricey TV but above the competition.
It's a shame the remote has no backlight at this price, but backlight ones from Sony are very cheap.
