I purchased this camera during a Black Friday sale. I purchased it as a carry camera because of its sensor size for a camera this small. My workhouse camera is a D7100 and is bigger and heavier. The Sony is about 1 lb. I have heard the battery doesn't last long in this unit & at first my battery seemed to be draining even when turn off. I have tried an experiment the past couple of days to improve battery life. I have turned on the camera's airplane mode, which shuts off the WIFI & is a known power hog in this camera. For the past 2 days my camera has remained at 100%.
Images off this camera are as sharp as my Nikon & the focus is fast. Video is good and the focus responds quickly to subject movement. I'm still trying to get the hang of the video settings. It is a little different than my Nikon.
This appears to be a good 2nd camera for me. If you are planning to work with the camera all day you might want to get an extra battery or two. Also make sure you get an external battery charger. If you try to charge them in camera you can't use it while charging.

Light, easy to use alternative to DSLR. Beautiful, clear shots, even in dim light, and fast, accurate focus for action shots. Have only been playing with this for a few weeks, but it's already becoming my go-to over my long-loved Nikon DSLR. 24.3MP sensor produces images that can support LARGE prints, close-cropping. Sending images to phone via WiFi and Sony app is quirky but works.

For someone with small hands this is great. It is also light weight enough to be able to take place and not feel like you have an anchor around your neck. I really like how easy it was to transfer the pictures from the camera to my smartphone.

As a father and amateur photographer, I wanted to capture to some high quality images and video of my children to preserve for their future enjoyment. I sought fast-action to catch that millisecond where the kids are both smiling, with 1080p HD video.
I scoured through dozens of online reviews of DSLR cameras, and almost settled on a Canon t5i bundle, as they were both priced competitively during the 2014 holiday season and rank highest among most trusted and reliable brands. Within the Sony lineup, the a6000 flat-out beats the a5000, and edges out the a5100 with a few extras. Debate if the minor differences between the a5100 and the a6000 (flash, screen, fps) matter to you, and choose accordingly. Being a big one-time purchase for me, I decided to go big, and then go home.
The Sony a6000 camera with 16-55mm (f 3.5-5.6) lens is all but what the most aloof professional photographer could be looking for. Complete with included snap-on eyepiece, battery, lens cover, and strap, the bundle had all I needed to plug it in and snap 11 frames a second later that same day. It expertly handles low lighting, has intuitive functions that anyone with a modern smartphone could operate, has built-in pop-up flash, tilt touch-screen, and an insane number of focus points (147?!? Seriously? The T5i has, like, 9 by comparison) to help sharpen the subjects of the image. The separate video record button eluded me for a brief moment (by my thumb instead of index finger), but 10 seconds with an instruction manual would've squared that away. I was then able to use the built-in connectivity to my handheld device (Samsung Note 4) and Mac to transfer some pictures wirelessly (straight to facebook, inlaws, etc) and then pop out the SD card and load them en masse at my later convenience. (Fair warning: 11fps will result in newbies having to delete at least 10 photos for every one photo they like.)
The 16-55mm lens manages rapid zoom to about 4x, but was worthwhile to buy at the same time as the camera body, as Sony sets the price (even at Best Buy), and they are pretty much guaranteed never again to be as cheap as they are at time of the body's purchase.
The 55-200mm lens should also be assessed at the time of purchase to determine if you'll need the 20x zoom for future events (i.e.- Stadium seats at a pro sports games for close-ups, concerts, whale watching, or looking the part of a television private eye on a stakeout. ). Personally I saw the merits of the additional zoom at one-time-only deep discount, but for a casual photographer, I felt confident that the number of occasions which I would bulk up my bags by carry both lenses, exchange one for the other in time to capture the intended images, and switch back to something less front-heavy would be minimal. Plus, insuring the second lens would've increased the price another $100+. Instead, I used the money I would've spent on the 55-200mm lens and dedicated it to the comprehensive Best Buy insurance on the body and 16-55mm lens.
If you've read this far, you've earned my respect, and deserve my unbiased assessment:
Buy this Sony a6000 camera and 16-55mm lens, and thank me later.

I upgraded to the Sony a6000 from a Nikon d3100 after a lot of research and reading/watching reviews from reputable sites and professional photographers. This camera far surpassed everyone's expectations! I also wanted a more compact camera with interchangeable lenses for easy transport, and picked the a6000 over the a5000 for its professional capabilities. The quality of the images produced are better than my old dslr (and better/comparable with more professional models) it's comfortable to use, I like the lenses available (and you can use an adapter for non e mount lenses), and it's easy to navigate the menu. For the price you can't beat it. The only thing that I was disappointed in was that the files are not DNG; you have to download a DNG converter to be able to edit the images in Lightroom, for example.

As a hobby photographer over 65 who has taken pictures with good quality cameras since the early 60s, the A6000 is well worth the investment. Picture and movie quality as advertised. It can be as easy to use as a point and shoot. It can also give the user the control necessary to take "artsie" or difficult pictures. I have been especially impressed with the low light capability, steady shot when taking movies and light weight.
The initial shock over the size of the online or downloadable owners manual initially set me back. The automatic functions are so good it gave me time to Take pictures and movies before looking into the specific functions as they became useful. I purchased a Friedman guide book and it helped with some additional functions and explored fine tuning and the "why" behind certain choices.
This is a camera to pick up, shoot what you want, and fuss very little if at all. It is also significantly lighter than my previous DSLR and lenses.

I was looking for DSLR but don't wanted a bulky ones and wanted to a small handy camera with DSLR quality so bought this. It is very handy and has a great grip on hand. Picture quality are pretty crisp and clear even in very low light too. Its great camera if you want to take pictures of kids. This camera also has lot of additional features like NFC, Wifi Direct to transfer photos to smartphones and take remote photos with smartphone. These are great features which other DSLRs doesn't have by default. Kit lens are good but if you have Prime lens would make this more great.
Pros
Best Picture even in Low light
Takes faster photos
Compact and Handy
Interchangeable Lens
NFC, Wifi access to Smartphones for Photo transfer and Remote control.
Cons
Charging of battery needs to do done with battery in Camera
Other thoughts: Bought thru bestbuy as Openbox, but didn't come up with a lens has to replace it at local store.

The Sony A6000 is everything I could have wanted in a camera as an amateur photographer. The camera takes fantastic quality of pictures, gives the user as much or little control as they want, and is a very sturdy and strong quality of camera that can hold up to the abuse of moving to get the right photos. Here are some of my main points from my use with the camera the last 2 months.
Price
Obviously everyone is interested in the price of the product. I believe this camera is prices well for the amount of product you are getting. Because it is a mirrorless camera, it can take pictures at a quality of a $1000+ DLSR for a lower price. I Picked up this camera at Best Buy for $700 and did fork over the $180 for 3 years of Geek Squad to go with it. Even though $880 is still a good chunk of money I have found the camera to be well worth it.
Ease of Use
The Sony A6000 setting will let more professional users have complete control of all settings, or will let the newest amateur have almost no control and auto all settings for still a very great picture. I usually have the camera in full auto mode. The only times I have placed the camera in any of the manual modes is for nighttime skyline and drag racing photos.
Picture Quality
This camera has a 24.3 megapixels and the pictures are great. As long as I haven’t screwed things up from a camera control perspective, the photons always come out fantastic. Obviously, post editing photos is something that any realistic photographer will do, but because the photos are so great coming out of the camera, there is usually very little for me to do. For examples of photos that I have taken, please see my online portfolio: SSH-Photography.com
Cons
Very few cons with this camera. But here are 2 that I have found while using the Sony A6000.
- Continuous shooting speed. On this camera, for sports photos or fast moving nature photos, a fast shooting speed is necessary to get the shot you want. Some more high end cameras and DSLRs will allow you to actually choose the number of photos per second. This camera will allow you to choose from low, medium or high shooting speed. The shooting speed of high is pretty fast, but what I noticed while at the drag racing track here in town is that even when shooting at a high speed with picture settings to JPEG the camera was just barely slower than I would have wanted. Now, please note that the cars I was shooting were traveling at 250+ MPH and I was standing about 20 feet away, so the kind of photos I was getting were at the extreme end of sports shooting.
- Hot Shoe. The hot shoe on the top of the camera works with almost all accessories, but for some reason some of those accessories do not lock in securely completely all the time. If you notice the camera you will see the hot shoe is black compared to a Nikon or Cannon hot shoe. Part of me wonders that in an effort to keep the camera esthetically pleasing SONY painted the hot shoe in a way that makes it difficult for accessories to lock in completely sometimes. It has never been a major issue, but just something I noticed that I wish was just one more step towards perfect.
Recommendation
I would recommend this camera to any other individual who wanted to get into amateur photography that wanted a good quality camera for a price that is less than $1000. As I learn more about taking photos and how to become a better photographer this camera allows me to take those next steps. This camera is better than I could have imagined at first and only wish I had gotten started on this hobby a lot sooner. Once again, if you would like to see some examples of photos that I have taken please visit my online portfolio: SSH-Photography.com

This has been a giant leap ahead compared to my previous bridge camera's. It does much more and is easier to use, the limiting factor is me. I am still learning to use the camera. It can be point and shoot, but to get really good pictures requires a little more, but that applies to any camera. I love the way it feels in my hands. Throw in some post processing and many pictures are suitable for framing, which I did. I just printed a sunset at 24 X 36 and it's wonderful.
People here have said it all, good and bad, but to me I really love this camera.
The sunset and house photo's have been retouched.

I have now owned this camera for over a year, and I am still in love with it. I use it for both video and photography and it does not fail. I take night photography, band photos, and senior pictures with it. My friend recently purchased a canon t5i and it doesn't stand anywhere near the quality and custom-ability as the Sony a6000. I highly suggest downloading the play memories mobile app so you can send your photos directly to you're phone from your camera... It takes seconds. Love. Love. LOVE this camera. (The night photo I have attached is with the kit lens. The band photo is with the Sony 50mm lens)

I love taking photos but I never had an interchangeable lens camera. I read a lot of reviews on this camera and decided to buy it. I am so glad I did! I was able to purchase an open-box version and lucked out because it arrived flawless.
This camera is great for taking all types of photos, action, landscape, macro, etc. I am only a casual photographer and not a professional. I have received a lot of positive feedback about the quality of the photos!
Let me make a suggestion, after you purchase this camera, go online and look up SONY A6000 tutorials. There are a few people out there who have taken the time to show you how to use your camera and take advantage of all of its capabilities.
PROS: 24MP, DSLR power in a smaller design, weatlh of instructional information online
CONS: No external microphone input except through multi interface shoe, no touch screen

After my Olympus 520 retired itself, went looking for a good replacement. I expected to buy the current Olympus mirorless camera. A best buy employee recommended the Sony. Not one to buy only based on recommendation, I had to come home and do my own research. Camera looked great on paper. I decided to give it a shot knowing I could return if i didn't like it. It also helped that Best Buy was running a great deal for the camera, two lenses, memory card and camera bag. I could not be happier with my choice. The pictures are clear and the camera is unbelievably fast. It is simple to use ( i keep it in auto more - not one for changing all the settings). I was concerned that the Sony did not have the image stabilization in the body as my old Olympus. It is not a problem. I have not had a blurry shot yet.
My only dislike is the shutter sound can be a bit distracting in a quiet environment. I have not found a way to turn it off or down in this model. Buy a huge memory card. In the sports continual shooting setting you get a lot of pictures quickly.
I should also say, I never give 5 stars for anything bc nothing is perfect, but this camera is pretty darn close!

I have had a 50D for about 6 years now I'd say. It was a great camera but I decided to sell it for a few key reasons. 1) It was very large and I found myself leaving it at home and taking pics on a smartphone or not at all. 2) although it did take amazing pictures it lacked a video function.
The a600 has a quite a few more MP than my 50D did. Takes great HD video. Has all the pro features that I loved about my dlsr. Can shoot at 11fps, and last but not least can fit in my cargo shorts pocket.
Overall I give this a 5/5 and I think within the next 15 years or less traditional dslrs will be a thing of the past.

I almost bought the A7 when this camera came out and decided to purchase it instead - has been a great decision (also saved a substantial sum of money.) I've loved photography for nearly 50 years and the advances that have been made are truly astounding. This camera will do far more than most people really need, and takes pictures that are far superior to even the best fixed lens camera (the exception being the RX1 perhaps.) What you get for the price is amazing. For the average advanced amateur/semi-pro like myself, the A6000 will do everything you need and far more, and you'll want to take it everywhere. You can pull it out when you first get it and start shooting immediately (provided you purchase it with a lens - I bought the 16-50 and 55-200,) and the photos are great, even when enlarged far beyond the old 8"x10" size. If you have any legacy glass (which I have a lot of,) simply buy an adapter and start shooting. It is exciting to finally find a camera that has so fully engaged my love for photography again. I continue to learn and use features that are really helpful in my quest to make better photographs. If you want to take some great photos, and have a load of fun doing it, I seriously doubt you would ever regret this purchase. Oh, and the video.... simply amazing!

This camera is amazingly small. Takes great pictures when they are in focus. I have a d7100 and a d90 I'm comparing this Sony to which might not be fair. The focus system is fast however at night time none of my pictures using a fisheye lens were in focus. Idk why but the all looked terrible. The focus peaking is a great feature but I wouldn't rely on it for focusing too much. It's not as accurate as I would like. Out of a 1000 or more pictures using a nikon adapted lens and the Sony fisheye 2.8 lens, very little came out to somthing useful. I was quite surprised actually. This camera has its limitations and as long as you know what they are it's good. I would defiantly buy it again, however using 3rd party lenses with the camera isn't so desirable. Also the lenses available are super expensive vs dslr variants.
The control for f stop and shutter could have been placed better. I suppose the design team didn't play with the prototype before releasing because its not intuitive at all where they are located, I find myself naturally changing modes instead since its placed right under the thumb when the camera is held.
For the size it's incredible, I will suck it up and buy some expensive e mount glass, despite having nikon glass already. I was wanting to hold off on that in the hopes nikon would catch up with sony in this market. I wont hold my breath. I was hoping it would have performed better at night or in dimly lit situations, so If your shooting action at night stick with your dslr. If you want a camera that is easy to travel with and there when you need it, this certainly fits the bill. I recommend it and will probably purchase the full frame version for landscapes. Oh and the kit lens is not that usefull. I haven't used it much since its limited in quality, perhaps I should use it since my nikons don't work to well for me.
