Best Camera for My Purposes

Am comparing with the Sony Nex-7, of which I own 3 bodies. I dismiss DSLR cameras as inappropriate for my purposes. Film SLRs and DSLRs are too bulky and weighty, even APS-sensor DSLRs, to be carried when photography is not my sole purpose of travel and recreation. Despite all the SLRs and DSLRs I have owned, most of my photography was with upper end point and shoots. Your best camera is the one you have with you. A camera too burdensome stays home. Professional grade mirrorless cameras have provided pleasure of full control in totable size. I purchased the a6500 for its weather sealing. Recently while traveling in deserts and in wet maritime climate the lack of sealing in the Nex-7 proved a liability. Many will buy the a6500 for its astounding auto focus, shooting speed and buffer size, fine features, though for me not sufficient to justify purchase. E-mount APS size lenses are not weather sealed, but a single wrap of a 1/4 wide strip of gaffer's tape applied over the lens mount gives good protection. (I do recommend a rain sleeve, as well, when needed.) In body image stabilization is a plus when hand holding in low light with wonderful but unstabilized Zeiss 24/1.8 and 50/2.8 macro. Vs. the Nex-7 handling is improved. Stray hand and body contact no longer moves the top control wheels nor is the movie button as likely to be inadvertently activated. Custom and function buttons allow command of exposure parameters, ISO, focus mode, exposure mode, exposure compensation, flash compensation, exposure bracketing, and viewing of histogram and of electronic level, all without removing eye from EVF. Nex-7 was excellent, but a6500 is even better. Menu navigation is improved. Solid feel. It is a lot of fun to use. So far have failed in attempt to link to iPhone but this level of remote control is a stunt I'd only use for long exposure on tripod, controlling focus point, shutter and exposure from phone screen. Eventually will succeed.

This is a great camera for both photography and video! It has been great seeing the pictures I’m able to capture with this camera. The 4K video is fabulous too! The camera has been easy for me to figure out to take great action pictures, portraits, closeups, and landscape. Being mirrorless, it has been great to actually look through the view finder and be able to see what the picture will be.

The camera overall is fantastic. It takes very good low light photos. The image stabalization is also off the charts. I took panoramic shots of Chicago from a small boat and was super impressed by the outcome.
This is not a pro grade camera though, in bulb mode, you have to hold the shutter the entire time you want the shutter open. Pro cameras allow you to open and stay open as long as you request then close on the close request. I want to take photos of deep space objects and have to keep my finger on the shutter button the entire time! (30 minute exposures)
Helpful notes: The remote control is diabled by default in the camera settings.

I have been using the camera primarily for video with the 18-105 lens. Great performer and really clean images. Love the IBIS and fast autofocus. I believe you will love it as well.

This is an excellent camera and much smaller than muy old DSLR. The lenses are not much different in size from a DSLR though. The main advantage of this camera is its focus capability. When a high quality lens is installed, the speed of focus is incredible. A couple things to consider though are that the focus speed is diminished quite a bit at night and definitely dependent on the lens used. The LCD screen is good and makes it easy to tell quickly how the picture turned out. All in all a solid camera with great features.

Great Upgrade from a6000

So far I’m really impressed with the improvements to the a6000. I don’t shoot a lot of video, so I can’t comment too much on that, but I have played around with the slow-mo which works well. But the picture quality is great, especially in low light. I find that I can do a lot more low light photography without a flash and get better results than the 6000 - possibly due to the improved image stabilization. Handling is great as well - improved grip; feels quite a bit heavier than the a6000.

My wife got this camera for me as an upgrade on the a6000 I already own. The improvements from its predecessors (a6000 and a6300) are obvious as soon as you use this camera. The IBIS, clear image zoom, and super fast autofocus makes this my favorite camera for video (4k as well as 120fps at 1080p)

I had the 6000 and 6300. I really liked the 6300 so I was not convinced that I should upgrade to the 6500. I found this open box and decided to trade in the others in for the 6500. It is a great camera love the built in stabilizer. Huge upgrade from the 6000 but if you are happy with the 6300 I wouldn’t upgrade unless you get a good deal on one.

Simply put, the Sony a6500 is the best bang for the buck in Mirrorless cameras. The 4k video is top notch, 120fps HD slow mo video is excellent and the photos are sharp and clear. The camera is lightweight and easy to use. Recommended!

I purchased this camera for my wife in anticipation of a family vacation. The vacation fell through, but the camera is amazing! The sensor is literally covered with phase-detect AF nodes (425 to be exact) making focusing fast and accurate. The camera is small and lightweight, but feature-rich. There are so many features and operating modes that it can be overwhelming if you are looking for just the one. I recommend starting with what you know (full auto if you are new to photography) and then take time each week to learn at least one new features. You'll be surprised how versatile this camera can be.
And, yes, I know a professional photographer with an A6500 in his kit.

I always wanted a camera but something new not a DSLR, I'm glad I went with Sony because this a6500 is so small and compact perfect to just have around. Great Image quality (not full frame but also not 2000$). It's a great camera to get started or have as a side camera since it can record at 4k. Only problem would be the small battery (you will need extra) and the lack of weather sealing (scared to take it anywhere near water tbh).

Now With On-Sensor Image Stabilization

The Sony A6500 is very similar to its predecessor, the A6300 with one major difference. This camera now has image stabilization built into the camera body. The A6300 did not have it in the body but it could operate stabilization built into Sony lenses. Unfortunately, not all Sony lenses have image stabilization, so in some cases the A6300 offered no image stabilization at all.
REMEDIED! The A6500 can use in-body stabilization AND optical stabilization in the lenses when available. The A6500 can even provide image stabilization with third-party lenses and adapted lenses. That's a major advantage in low-light photography with shutter speeds under 1/30th sec.

I purchased this camera as my C camera, I currently own the A7SII and the A7RII and I seem to to be using it a lot more than I expected. The touchscreen is very useful for charging focus. The actual lock on focus seems to work better that the A7RII and better than the A7SII.

Have tried all the cameras trying to find the best for videos and stills, Canon 80d, Nikon d5500, Panasonic G85 but this Sony A6500 if the keeper. Best for video with it's AF, Canon is really good too but video quality can't keep up with Sony or Panasonic. Nikon AF for video is terrible. Panasonic is best for ease of use and ergonomics, but photo quality not that great and video AF not good. If Panasonic would get a better AF it would be my pick for the touchscreen and Superb IBIS. This Sony takes a leaning curve to master but worth it!
