I bought this camera roughly a year ago, so I've had the chance to use it extensively before writing this review. Like most cameras, it's not perfect, but I've found it to be an overall outstanding camera. Rather than write a long, long story, I'll get into the pros and cons. First, I purchased this as an "Open Box" deal from Best Buy and probably saved about $500 at the time of purchase. PROS - Great full-frame sensor with excellent resolving power. Colors are accurate, and noise is reasonably well controlled. I don't have any issues with this sensor. - FAST! When set to Continuous Shooting - High, you'll be impressed with how quickly it rattles off shot after shot. I've been shooting some fashion runway shows, and you need a fast camera. This fits the bill. - Electronic viewfinder. Compared with an optical viewfinder, I would go with an electronic viewfinder any day. This allows you to see real-time changes when setting white balance, and there is no comparison when it comes to magnified views for manual focus. - Quality of construction. This camera is built rock solid. It has a good amount of heft to it. You can tell that this is built to stand up to hard use. - The various markings are engraved and filled, which means that they won't wear off in a couple of years. Unlike other cameras that I've owned. - You can easily dial in exposure compensation or magnify the image for manual focus. I've found this to be a very friendly camera. I don't have to "fight" the camera to use it. CONS - The body is too short. I've average-sized man hands, and the camera needs to be a bit taller for a firm grip. I bought an aftermarket battery grip, which makes it a bit too tall (win some, lose some). - Getting to some menu items requires too many button presses. In general, the camera takes the Asian design approach of filling most space on the body with buttons and dials and leaving it up to you to memorize the location and function of each. I actually don't have a solution to this. - Major battery hog. In addition to the limited number of frames per battery charge, this camera seems to suck power even when it's turned off. After a week, the battery usually has dipped to about 60%. I went to an external battery solution, because the worst thing to happen is to lose power in the middle of a shoot. OTHER COMMENTS I sold the kit lens, as I found that I rarely used it. It's a bit larger than I wanted for a kit lens, and instead I bought the Sony G 70-200mm zoom, which was used to take the attached image. When I want to use a kit zoom, I borrow the one from my Sony NEX-7. This lens is average at best. I've only shot a few minutes of video, as I've dedicated video cameras, so I can't speak to video performance. This camera has heft to it, and when I get really lazy, I opt for the NEX-7. When shooting with manual focus lenses, I found that my hit rate decreased. Using a manual focus lens with a full-frame sensor requires more attention when focusing. I tend to use the magnify function, which makes a difference. Overall, I think this is an awesome camera. It's well worth the money that I paid. The black and white shot was taken with my manual-focus Rollei QBM f/1.8 50mm Planar - my favorite SLR lens.

I have had several Sony mirrorless cameras & also a Nikon & a Canon DSLR. Sony has always been my favorite. I love everything about them. This model of camera was a gift from my husband for Christmas. I have been wanting a full frame for awhile but couldn't justify spending the money on one. He said he got a very good deal with this one. So far I am very impressed with how fast it is compared with my Sony a6000. Some of the settings are in different places so I am still learning how to use the camera, but I am very impressed so far. The images are beautiful even in low light. @@@@@@@@ I took pics of my 6mo baby with no light except Christmas lights) The only down side would be how much heavier it is compared to my a6000. That certainly won't stop me from using it! I am looking forward to all the awesome photos I will be taking with it!

Read so many reviews about sony mirrorless compared to DSLRs. I'm so glad I went mirrorless. So much easier to use, love the electronic viewfinder, and produces great quality photos. The A7ii is also rated the most well rounded sony mirrorless for the price, taking into consideration ISO performance and focusing system.

I chose the Sony a7 platform for many reasons but the primary was due to the mirrorless design. . Mirrorless caused the camera to be much smaller than DSLR equivalents which was a big concern of mine due to the type of photography I was wanting to focus on (Adventure motorcycling/landscape/wilderness) but also has the flexibility to be a fantastic portrait and lifestyle camera as well. Another benefit of mirrorless is due to the EVF (electronic view finder) giving you a representation of what you are going to get before you take the picture. . Unlike typical glass/mirror cameras where you are optically looking at the subject the EVF allows the application of settings to show through making it easier to get that first shot closer to what you are wanting. This is a fantastic camera for the price and allows you to get into professional level photography for a great price allowing you to focus on quality lenses that fit the e-mount or a-mount (this camera supports both a-mount lenses and canon lenses with inexpensive adapters) platform. As you continue to build you have a lens platform that will be around for years to come. I also do videos and this model supports quality video as well as (with a cable adapter) wireless mics making it a great platform for run and gun video shooting with quality depth of field you only find in high end movie cameras. I can record non-stop for 30 minutes making it perfect for the type recording I do. I would love to record longer than that but this seems to be a pretty standard limit on most DSLR's due to overheating concerns. I definitely recommend this camera. One thing to note is the lenses for this camera do tend to run higher than the comparable canon or nikon. . For my needs the mirrorless design outweighed the negative of the extra cost in lenses and if I were moving from another platform it wouldn't even be a consideration due to the adapter option for cross platform lenses. . @@@@@@@@ note- you do lose focus control and other features when using cross platform lenses) I was also able to purchase a Godox speed light flash with wireless trigger for ridiculous low price and it works in conjunction with the Sony perfectly... So if flash is a need that is your option. . Godox TT685s Great camera, David Mays

I've shot with Canon and Nikon. Both awesome. In my opinion this Camera is just superior for many reasons. It is easy to use. Sony Lenses are really really great. Picture quality, color, crispness, and I could go on. Camera is light weight and feels great in my hands. Lense are pricey but I prefer the native lenses to Canon and Nikon. Keep it all in the family and you will get great results. I researched this camera and compared to the Canon 6d and 7D. It even out performed the 5D on many sites. I also compared to Nikon D750. All take great pictures but for me and I'm super particular I'm so happy I bought the Sony. I just added the 90mm Macro lens for portraits and Macro use. Best money I've every spent on a lens. Incredible pictures. Camera is simply worth it! If you want to have a camera that works well and makes you look great as a photographer buy this camera. You will be proud of the pictures you will take!! Also watch You Tube videos on how to use camera and different Lense. I'm no pro but hey help me a lot to understand the camera and lenses. However, the camera itself is the real hero.

I'm completely new to photography but from what I researched I wanted a full frame dslr and this one packed a lot of great specs for the price. I'm most impressed with the colors this camera captures. All of my photos come out so vibrant! It's light weight and pretty user friendly. Some of the other reviews mentioned short battery life which is accurate so I just ordered 3 extra batteries and carry them around in the case with me. I look forward to seeing what more I can accomplish with different lenses. So far I've mostly been playing with a 50mm prime lens that was relatively inexpensive. It shoots amazing portraits but you have to move around a lot to achieve the focus and bokeh that you want. Hope someone finds his review helpful.

I have shot with Sony mirrorless cameras for many years now Beginning with the A7S and then the A7S II. I was curious about the A7 but it has absolutely everything a film-maker needs. I Chose this camera over other comparable cameras in the price range because 1. It is full frame unlike Panasonic or Canon comparable 2. it handles amazing in low light.... and has fine tuning capabilities 3. The buttons can be easily customized. Spending 5 minutes when setting up the camera for the first time will go a long way. I have a custom button set for audio controls, zoom, WB, etc. 4. Audio monitoring and outputs. This camera has all the outputs you would need. headphone jack, hdmi, etc. 5. Perfect camera for travel. And a cheap EF to E mount adapter allows me to use all my canon lenses as well. The one thing the A7 doesn't have that I miss from the A7SII is internal 4K but for the price you can not beat it.

I bought this camera, after buying and returning, a Canon EOS M50. The M50 felt like a toy compared to the Sony. I bought a mid line Sony years ago and loved it. The full image sensor is my favorite part of this camera. The wifi and NFC connectivity are great as well.

Really happy with my purchase. This camera has so much to offer with the high end specs. It also comes at a reasonable price for a full frame camera. Low light pictures are crisp and great. I recommend this camera for anyone who is starting out.

This camera is still fairly new to me, but so far I can say that I truly love it! I have been shooting Nikon for years, but after some research, I decided to purchase. This is a new system to me, but has been easy to learn this far. I love the focus assist feature, the eye focus feature, and the auto ISO feature. I'm sure I'll keep adding to the list of pros as I use it more. The main con is of course the battery life. I purchased 2 extra batteries that I carry with me at all times, and an external charger, because I'm not too keen on the idea of having to plug my camera into the wall to charge it. Although... I'm interested to see if I can charge with an external power bank, or even use the power bank for extra long exposure shots like star trails, etc. the size of the camera is a nice change from the Nikon setup I have been using. The weight is perfect, and I'm able to pack both the kit lens and a 50mm with the 2 batteries and the charger into a holster type day bag. Great camera, especially being full frame to be able to carry without a lot of weight. The only other thing I can say I wish it had is dual memory card slots. Other than that, so far I'm completely satisfied with my purchase, and I think it's well worth the money. I haven't picked up my Nikon since buying this!

Coming from Canon, I really enjoy the ergonomics of this so much more. The only negative things that I can say about the camera are that battery life is less than desirable and there isn't enough articulation in the screen. Which isn't a big deal for some people. But if you do any vlogging, solo YouTube videos, or things like that, it makes life difficult.

I come from the Nikon D700 family and I have to say it is worth the money for me to change to the Sony a7 II. The Sony is so much lighter and a little more compact and does so much more than my D700 ever did. I like that the camera has a translucent mirror so you do not have to hear the shutter going up and down which works better for weddings or when you do not want to have any noise. I like the video function also since I do not have to carry a video camera around when I want to take a small video of something. The main thing I like about the Sony is that you can use it in very dark places without a flash or lights, I bought my D700 for that reason and the a7 does a better job at that.
