I’ve gone back and forth recently on which new camera to purchase, and frankly, the A7sII was not my first choice. There are Canon cinema cameras with the same 4K and 1080p slo-mo capabilities as this camera, but with a better, more accurate sensor. However, I purchased the A7sII because it was a more affordable option, it allows photography as well as video recording, it’s more compact than larger Canon camera bodies, and best of all, by purchasing through Best Buy with my Best Buy credit card, there is a significant amount of money coming back to me that I can use for additional equipment like lenses or ND filters (which this camera definitely needs). If you’re looking for a pretty good camera option for 4K video and full-frame photography, and you’re not holding out for the inevitable new model, I recommend this one for sure—especially if you’re a Best Buy Elite or Elite Plus member like I am, because the rewards coming back are significant.

Best Video DSLR on the market?

After a ton of research, my first camera purchase was an A7R II over the A7S II. Afterward, I picked up an a6500. My latest purchase was this gem. Looking back, I actually think I would have preferred the A7S II as my first camera. In my mind, the R has just one advantage over the S, and that is the 44 MP sensor. The R allows you to recompose any shot you could ever want down to about the smallest crop you could image. I'm talking printable images with 400% crop. This has really helped produce some phenomenal shots. Now, if you are an expert at composition and/or you take a ton of pictures every time you shoot, the advantage of the R is really lost. The S operates faster, has almost the same image quality (in real world shots), and is an ABSOLUTE BEAST as a video camera. The superior in body stabilization (side by side to the R, the S is just better), SLog 3, gamma assist, slow motion, and UNREAL low light performance make this a better camera. There I said it.

Honestly if you're coming from a camera below a canon 5dmkiii this will be a game changer for you. If you've used a 5diii or better it's a one trick pony - good in low light. The screen is terrible - you'll need a monitor. The evf is ok - not practical though. The menus are terrible - but there are plenty of custom buttons. The colour science isn't great- skin tones are redish and sometimes green comes out blue wtf right? Stills are ok - but if you're taking stills often get the a7rii. The slow mo and 1080 native is soft - good feature for the price. But I'd seriously consider saving for an fs5 if you're serious about video. That also has its issues but you'll want the 10bit colour depth because of the extra time you'll have to spend colour grading both cameras images. If you need a small body are ok shooting in 4K to get the best picture, don't really need slomo over 60fps, have plenty of time to colour grade and don't have the money to light your shoot/like shooting at night then this is the camera for you.

I can't express enough my disappointment. Ordered this camera and had it overnighted, when it arrived I notices the box was worn, along with the tabs that keep the box closed. Having purchased lots of equipment, this was red flag #1. When I picked up the box, the camera was loose inside. Opening the box it was evident that the components and camera we're not packed by the factory. Getting down to the unsecured camera, the mesh sleeve holding it was full of hair. I refused delivery and immediately called customer service, explaining what I'd just received. I explained that I needed the camera for a shoot in two days, and she assured me how sorry she was and a new camera was being expedited. When I get the tracking it shows UPS Ground for service... Perfect... Called back, even though the package hadn't been picked up by UPS yet, they we're unable/unwilling to update the deliver service to next day (the service I paid for).. Never again

This camera is awesome. It can shoot in very low light and still works great - you can basically make it look like daytime at night. I did return this camera, but my friend owns one and we have done some filming with his. We had one problem where the footage was turning red, but he reset the camera and hasn't had a problem with it since. The high frame rate, 4K internal recording and image stabilization are also pluses for this camera. It's small size is also great for traveling and filming handheld on longer shoots. Some caveats are that the battery life is very short (60 minutes) and not only is the camera itself a bit more expensive than other comparable cameras, but the lenses for it are also not cheap (depending on your budget).

This was tough for me to buy, since it was my first camera purchase over $2000, but NO REGRETS. I've been putting the A7S to work the past year on countless freelance corporate shoots and guerrilla narrative/doc shoots and I am so impressed. 4K log never looked so good, even at night. I'm generating images that I didn't think I'd be able to for $2000. Lightweight, quiet operation, incredible resolution- you can't go wrong. I recently paired it up with Fujinon lenses and an atmos external recorder. Jaw dropped. No disappointment here

I've had this a month or two now and overall this is a reasonable camera. Good form factor, image is ok, low light is excellent. You'll have to spend a lot of time in post getting the most out of it though and the crop 1.6x leaves the image very soft on such a low mp sensor. My main gripe is with the terrible back screen quality. Unless you can look in the viewfinder the whole time you need a separate monitor to get a good focus. Yes you can use the image magnification to zoom in while recording and check focus but the screen is so low res it's hardly a perk. So far I'm underwhelmed by this cameras image other than it's low light performance maybe I'll change my mind as I use it more.

This mirrorless camera is the king of low light video/photography.. The ability to shoot video at 4k where you can go up the ISO to 51000+ with little to no noise at all. If you are taking pictures this camera will only go up to 12mp, not a very high resolution but perfect for instagram/facebook/ and prints on 11x8... Note: When video at high ISO try over exposing 1/3+ to 1+ so that there is no noise in the dark areas of the video.

Bought this as a gift for a friend on mine who is a professional. He was lamenting the cost and I told him I could get it at less than he could find it. Technically, I have NOTHING to add. He was overjoyed with it and took it out to use immediately. As I said, he is a pro. He's carrying it everywhere now, and the images he sends (he shoots raw and then doctors them) are amazing. Unless you're a pro, I'm sure there are less costly options, but if you want what the pros use, then take this one.

Already being a Sony fan, I've been saving up to buy the A7Sii because I wanted a camera that can produce photos in low light situations. I currently own a number of Sony cameras. Based on all the great reviews and feedback on the first generation, I had to have one in my collection. The build is what I expected from Sony. The performance is great. The only negative is that is still uses the same small battery as the other mirrorless Sony's. Although, you do get 2 batteries with 2 generation. I am looking forward to producing some great photos/videos in the near future!

This is a monster of a camera. If video is what you're out to do, I would recommend this camera for all around run and gun work. I also own the a7rII, and I actually prefer the R over the S, but the S has better low light capabilities, especially in full frame mode. the R will have to be in APSC mode to be comparable to the S (which is mainly what I shoot at). The S shoots great low light footage in 4K and also 120fps slow mo in full HD 1080p (the R shoots at 720p in 120fps). I would definitely recommend the a7sII if you're looking for a low light beast of a camera.

I purchased the Sony A7SII to shoot 4K video. The picture quality is outstanding!!! I now have the ability to shoot video with professional results.Settings you only find on pro-cams such as s-log2 and s-log3 along with unbelievable low light sensitivity give me extended dynamic range and much less video noise in low light. With good glass, it would be very hard to make a better looking video at any price. I am very happy. Thanks Sony!

Wow..Sony is doing some amazing things with mirrorless cameras. I was really excited at the thought of going mirrorless but just couldn't justify the price with also having to purchase all new lenses as everything I own currently is Canon. I tried this with the metabones adaptor and it just didn't work as I was led to believe it would. You have to maul focus and this just wouldn't work for me trying to chase children and needing to focus fast. But if you are in the market for mirrorless and can purchase different Sony lenses this is a great camera.

I needed a new camera that didn't need so much artificial light. This came as big surprise for me and my film buddies. The Best freaking camera I ever very bought, and I'm cheap. I'm still trying to figure out the limits of the camera, that is why I have people around me who can read and are smart. I grew up with film and technology has left behind. Sony you have made me smarter and my hips look much smaller.

I did months of research trying to figure out my first camera purchase. That research lead me to this camera. It fit my needs because I mostly record and if I am taking a picture it will be uploaded somewhere online and I don't need that many MPs. I take this every where I go and finally got the chance to shoot in a low light event and the video is still amazing. Do your research before purchasing and see if this is the camera for you. Big purchase for my first camera? Yes. Am I regretting it? No.

The whole Sony a7 line is impressive. I am a professional photographer but this camera took the best quality photos I've ever taken. And the video is incredible as well. Because I am a 20 year Canon user, I had a hard time figuring the camera out. I'm just not sure if the price is justifiable, I can get a camera from Canon that takes similar quality images for a better price.

I've been using Canon DSLR's (mark ii - iii) for a long time. They are incredible cameras but are a little bulky and the iso in low light isn't bad, but not excellent as we'll. This was my first Sony Mirrorless and just as credible reviews stated is amazing in low light. No comparison in my opinion for the price range. Also, with adapters, you don't need to worry about giving up your expensive canon lens sets. For the price, I feel I have never more satisfied with a camera.

Sony A7s ii is the best camera out there for mid level filmmakers, wedding shooters. 12.2 mp on a 35mm full-frame guarantees flawless low light video. Also shoots sLog-3. The change of design of the camera's shutter button means a better grip on the newer version. Also, 1080p @120fps and not to forget the sweet 4K@ 30fps. Pair it with a Sony 50mm or a 24-70mm G-master lens and you're good to go! All in all, the camera is worth every penny.

I have been enjoying this camera since the day one. This full frame mirrorless camera Sony a7s Mark II is amazing camera. It's small and works like a beast. It's low light capability is the best feature. Thank you Sony and BestBuy from the bottom of my heart. The sales person was very helpful and knowledgeable on camera.

There's a lot of negativity out there about the a7srII. After purchasing the camera I found out it was all a lot of nit-picking. The camera is amazing and any noted drawback is far less extreme as has been mentioned, the menu for example isn't that difficult or the record video button isn't hard to press, besides you can set any of the custom buttons. Bottom line, if you need a low light camera, GET THIS!
