We added the Sub 9 to the Bravia Trio because we wanted that deep, heavy theater rumble that makes action movies fun. It is a massive, heavy block of a speaker, but if you have the floor space for it, it does an incredible job of bringing movie night to life. The bass it puts out isn't just loud; it's tight and snappy, meaning it rattles your chest during explosions without turning into a muddy, vibrating mess that drowns out the rest of the audio. It links up to the main system without any audio cables, which makes finding a spot for it a bit easier, though it's still a beast to move around. The Bravia App does an excellent job of helping to integrate this into the overall Sony ecosystem and make sure it is properly configued and balanced. I found the stock setting too loud. I had to use the app to turn it way down for normal TV watching and then back up when I'm wanting big movie sound. Here are my Pros and Cons for this monster. Pros: Immense, floor-shaking bass that you can actually feel. Low notes stay tight and clean instead of sounding sloppy or boomy. Simple wireless connection to the rest of the gear. The cabinet itself feels incredibly solid and well-made. Easy to configure and control with the Bravia app Cons: It has a giant footprint and takes up a ton of floor space. Weighing over 50 pounds, it was not the easist thing to unbox and position, especially for someone recoverying from back surgery! Out of the box, the bass can be so loud it initially masks the dialogue. The Bigger Picture: A standalone subwoofer is only built to handle the heavy, rumbling effects—it can't play regular audio, music, or voices. It relies entirely on the Trio to handle the bright, clear details upfront, and it needs the Rear 9 satellites to complete the fully immersive sound bubble all the way around your seating area.

Hi Waggly,
We are immensely pleased to hear how the BRAVIA Theater Sub 9 has brought your movie nights to life with that deep, cinematic rumble. Delivering tight, chest-rattling bass without sacrificing clarity is exactly what this subwoofer was engineered to do. We also appreciate you highlighting how easily it integrates into the Sony ecosystem via the BRAVIA Connect App, allowing you to fine-tune the balance to your liking.
Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed breakdown of your experience, and thank you for making Sony the centerpiece of your home theater setup.

This product so far doesn’t work. I had it installed by geek squad along with surround sound. Since you can’t call the store it’s difficult to get help. 1-800 gets you a twelve year old with a manual. I’ll have to go to the store and then take off work again for my window of time . Geek squad outsources now for home set up, etc.

For most people looking to enhance their Trio setup, the Sony Sub 9 is a no-brainer. The unit is a sleak monolith with a cut out channel right through the middle so that you can see through it. On both sides it has dual opposing drivers for deep, balanced sound. The unit connected easily and wirelessly to the Trio's center channel hub, so you can place it just about anywhere in the room. It does stand out next to the rest of the system and you can't really hide it — it's huge and heavy by comparison — but with that size comes proportional capability, and it delivers house-shaking bass. Sony will even let you pair two of them to your system, though I'm not that brave; one was more than enough for my 15x17-foot room. Once you've paired and calibrated the unit, in the app you will be able to adjust bass level from the main menu to suit your preference, with additional options for phase to enhance bass performance. Overall, the sub elevates the Trio's already stellar bass performance with a deep, punchy rumble that only Sony could engineer.

The Sony BRAVIA Theater Sub 9 Wireless Subwoofer packs a punch. It’s a heavy dual woofer sub. It is wireless, but need a full 120v plug. The plug length is 5’. The dual subs are 7-7/8” and more than enough to deliver deep and powerful bass. It’s about a 15” cube and weights ~51.5 pounds. Setup was easy with the Bravia app. During the initial Bravia Theater or after, you can add the sub. Just plug in and hit the sync button when asked. The app links the subwoofer to your head unit or soundbar and you’re done. The subwoofer was responsive and I had no delays. Bass and sub can be turned up manually or let the Bravia app optimize and set the levels. This bass fills out the lower end of the sound spectrum nicely. No distortion when in heavy use. No rattling from the unit, just pulsing bass. When using your controlling unit for music it also shines. Just tuck in a corner, on along a wall and let it play. It looks nice too. The subwoofer can be used with 6 different soundbars and 5 receivers. I used mine with a BRAVIA Theater Bar 9 soundbar and rear speakers. This really fills out the bottom where the regular speakers can’t reach. Easy to setup, can place anywhere you have an outlet, and delivers on bass. A great way to fill out your soundstage for music or movies.

First thing to know is that this is a lot of subwoofer, physically. Roughly 15 inches on a side and right around 51 pounds, so getting it out of the carton and into position is a two-person job or at minimum a take-your-time job. You won't be tucking it discreetly anywhere. Clear the floor space before it shows up. Pairing took about two minutes. Plug it in, press the link button when the app asks, and BRAVIA Connect folds it into your front system. From there it gets included in the same room calibration pass as everything else, so when you run the USB-C mic from your listening position, the sub's level and timing get set against the rest of the system rather than left for you to guess at. Sony's 360 Spatial Sound Mapping is the headline feature on the front and rear speakers, and what a sub like this does is give that whole mapped field a foundation to sit on. Deep material the smaller cabinets physically can't reach finally has somewhere to go. No cables running to any other component. Sony also supports running two of these together if one somehow isn't enough, which is new for this line. What impressed me most is the restraint. Dual opposing 200mm aluminum drivers face away from each other and cancel out cabinet vibration, and the practical result is bass that stays tight and defined instead of collapsing into a boomy smear that swallows everything above it. Plenty of subwoofers announce themselves constantly. This one sits back and fills in the bottom of the mix, then hits with real authority when the material calls for it. Explosions land in your chest. Low rumble under a quiet scene reads as texture instead of noise. Music benefits too, which isn't always true of home theater subs, and bass lines stayed articulate rather than just thumping. Compatibility runs broader than you'd guess, and that's the quiet argument in its favor. Beyond the newest three-piece front system, it pairs with the current bar lineup, the four-speaker system, several previous generation bars, and at least one Sony receiver. So an older Sony bar you're not ready to replace can still take this as an upgrade path without redoing your whole setup. Coming from a previous generation sub in this family, this one punches well above it, and the gain in control and low-end reach was obvious immediately. One honest word about expectations. How a sub this capable behaves in your space depends enormously on the space itself, and a concrete basement floor, a hardwood living room, and an upstairs apartment are three completely different problems. The calibration does a good job squaring things away, and I didn't have to fight it. But if you're in a small room, or you share a wall or a ceiling with someone, a smaller sub in this same family will likely serve you better and cost less. Give this one a proper room with floor space to spare and it's the piece that makes everything else sound finished.

We are so glad to hear that the dual opposing drivers, clean calibration, and tight, controlled bass are hitting the mark for your setup! It is awesome to know that it provides that deep foundation without turning into a boomy smear.

Bass is one of the biggest must haves in a movie theater setup. When you can feel the rumble of the footsteps of the T-REX approaching in Jurassic Park it just adds to the level of immersion and makes you feel like you’re a part of what’s happening on screen. I grew up with a Sony surround system in my basement and watching movies, making memories with my family, and feeling the rumble was a core memory for me. So, when I got the new Sony BRAVIA Theater Trio speaker system to bring that movie magic to my own home, I knew it needed to be paired with the best subwoofer possible. Enter the BRAVIA Theater Sub 9 Subwoofer! This Subwoofer is a beauty to behold. It immediately catches your eye with its simplistic yet stylish design. Once I got the 37 pound behemoth into place the setup was an absolute breeze with the BRAVIA connect app. It recognized the sub instantly and paired it with the Theater Trio and Rear 9’s and we were off and running. It’s worth noting that this Trio wireless system can handle 2 subs. You can also use this sub with previous Sony systems, sound bars and receivers! I’m not a detailed audiophile so I won’t get super technical with the sound quality of this Sub 9, I just know what I like to hear. And when I tell you that this subwoofer shakes my house in the best possible way, it’s a MONSTER. I’ve owned a Velodyne sub in the early 2000’s and I thought that sucker had some punch. The Sub 9 sounds so much better and the fact that it’s wireless is even more impressive. Not having wires everywhere with this new BRAVIA Trio has been amazing! The Sub 9 adds that low end depth to the scene in all the right ways and reminds me why a subwoofer is so important in a home theater setup. It packs a punch without being too overwhelming. Being able to control it through the BRAVIA connect app is a nice touch, but the options to adjust the bass settings are very limited. Hopefully in the future, with more updates to the App they’ll make more of an equalizer style adjustment option. Overall though it doesn’t diminish from the fact that the Sub 9 is just an absolute beast of a subwoofer and a perfect match with the BRAVIA Trio. If you have the new Sony BRAVIA Trio or an older Sony system that’s compatible with this subwoofer I would highly recommend it. I’m not sure you can do any better than the Sub 9 in terms of raw power for your living room! You won’t be disappointed if you buy this Subwoofer!

We love hearing how this subwoofer connects you to those nostalgic family movie memories from your childhood while delivering that monster bass for the T-Rex footsteps. It is awesome that the wireless setup was a breeze with the BRAVIA Connect app and that it pairs seamlessly with your entire setup. We also appreciate your helpful feedback regarding future equalizer options in the app.

There's only been a handful of times where I've been impressed so much by a subwoofer, and this is one of those times. From its design to the force it can output, this is a powerful machine. Design-wise, this is a very good looking subwoofer. While it is essentially a giant black box, there are noticeable design elements such as the textured ridge in the middle that adds some flair and elegance to the look. Moving to the audio, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Sony here, especially coming from an SW3, even though I have had some experience with dual force-cancelling subs previously. I've been very happy with what I've experienced so far. Sony could have easily fallen into the trap of flexing the Sub 9's muscles all the time and having it always boom and rumble, but Sony has shown restraint here. They've instead opted for the subwoofer to fill in the bass smoothly and cleanly into the mix. Make no mistake, however, as when the moment calls for it, it shows its power and heft with authority, delivering thunderous bass but only when it's necessary. I think that this is a massive upgrade compared to any other previous subwoofer Sony has released and is a definite upgrade pick, even if you have an SW5, as it adds so much balance to the sound field without overextending itself.
