I've been wearing (or should say not wearing) hearing aids for a couple of years after going to one of those big box warehouse stores and getting my hearing tested. I purchased at a price exceeding $2000 a set of rechargable hearing aids that go behind the ear with a wire stem looping over the ear and into my ear canal. Those are not comfortable to wear for long durations and I've had issues with the loop and the stems of my eye glasses. I spent a lot of money on something I'm not really happy with. Now that hearing aids are available over the counter I had to try a couple of brands. I love Sony products so I jumped on the opportunity to get these. For the most part they do a good job. I like the way they slip almost completely into the ear canal. The extra gel tips let you pick the fit that's best for you. I did get a great fit, they are extremely comfortable and after a couple of days of getting use to them I like the way they feel in my ear. I was at first concerned about how deep they went into the canal but they do have a small clear stem that sticks out to make it easy to remove them from your ear. I deducted a star for the setup app. I do like that there are iOS and Android versions of the app. The setup is pretty simple and with my Android I was easily up and running and went into the personal settings where you get different volumes and tones of beeps. Once you run through the routine your hearing aids are programmed and ready to use. If your hearing changes you can always fine tune them, increase volume or set filters to reduce ambient noise. The issue I had was with the app on my iPhone. It was user error but the step by step instructions didn't cover the issue I had. I had the volume up on my phone but I did have the do not disturb switch on. So, running through the personal settings I couldn't get any noise out of the hearing aid. I called tech support and they were awesome and they helped me understand where I messed up. The instructions call for turning volume up to at least 75% but it didn't address the DND switch so it took me a while to get the issue corrected. Once settings were done the iOS app worked like the Android, easily fine tuning, adjusting volume and filters. These not being rechargable you really need to be careful and open the battery compartment when not in use or you will kill the batteries pretty quickly. It comes with 10 batteries which might get you a week or 2 of use but if you forget to open the battery door they will drain quicker. Not really a big issue because the size 10 batteries are fairly cheap but make sure you have a couple on hand. Now, for my biggest complaint. You can not stream with these hearing aids. Many do allow Bluetooth streaming and for the price of these you would think that would be standard but it is not. So, if I want to stream I need to switch to my usual go to earbuds or wear over the ear headphones... but then the sound gets a bit tinny. The quality and size is great but no streaming???? At the price point I struggle with the value. Sony has another set, the E10, coming out soon that allows Bluetooth streaming and is rechargable but is more like a standard earbud on size and fit and runs another $300 over the CE10.

Hi Technopackrat, Thank you for your feedback. I'm glad Sony's product support team was able to help you pair the hearing aids! The primary goal of the CRE-C10 design was for it to be a discreet, nearly invisible option. Due to the small size, we're unable to incorporate streaming in this model. We're looking forward to the release of our CRE-E10 hearing aids this Winter. This will give iOS users streaming capabilities to enjoy. Regards, Erin Sony_US

Hi DonS! Thank you for taking to the time to leave a review of Sony CRE-C10 OTC hearing aids. We are sorry to learn that your experience with Sony OTC hearing aids did not meet your expectations. Sony OTC hearing aids are non-custom devices, meaning they were not designed specifically for the shape of your ear. Sometimes when someone wears a non-custom device, it may not fit the individual ear perfectly. If you have not already, you may benefit from contacting a hearing healthcare professional to discuss custom prescription hearing aid options.

      Best regards,

Review for Sony - Completely in Canal Self-fitting OTC Hearing Aid - Black. I was really looking forward to the new regulations that made over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids a reality. The Sony name brand was also a big draw. These hearing aids are SO tiny; they almost completely disappear into your ear canal. No hanging wires, nothing behind your ear. Sounds great, in theory, but for many seniors like me with mild (or worse) arthritis, they are almost too tiny. They can be difficult to hold and even more so to open the battery compartment or change the batteries. They are not rechargeable, which by itself didn’t bother me. Most rechargeable hearing aids cannot yet make it through an entire day. The size 10 batteries can last up to a week, if you turn off the aids when not in use by opening the battery compartment. (There is no on/off switch.) If you consider the $2000-$4000 cost saving over traditional hearing aids, you can buy a lot of these little batteries! So size of the aids and changing batteries aside, the use of these aids when set up is good, but not great. The amplification they provide is pretty easy to fine tune after the initial setup. And that’s the sticking point for me - the setup. The app provided by Sony is meant to help you configure the aids to your unique needs. In order to replace the services of a trained audiologist, it has to be robust, accurate, and straightforward for a wide audience - admittedly, a big lift! In many ways, the app tries to be these things, but is basically not ready for prime time yet, in my opinion. I tried more than five times to get the initial setup to pair and analyze my hearing. Despite requiring a Bluetooth connection, the app prompts you to turn it off! When I realized I had to ignore this, I had much better luck, but still took four more times to successfully set up the aids. Each time the setup failed, I had to start over from the beginning. I’ve been in Tech my whole life and have worked with hearing-impaired people, so I went into this knowing more than an average user might. I think that the app could be dramatically improved in three ways: strip out the legalese (save it for the print doc), make the step-by-step setup procedure more succinct, and allow setup to continue more easily when there are problems - don’t force the user to return to square one. Finally, in fairness, the hearings aids themselves are very well made, are easy to custom fit (with four different sized silicone tips), are very comfortable to wear, and produce good sound for mild to moderate hearing loss.

Thank you for your review and for sharing your feedback. We're glad you were able to get things paired. In order to pair the CRE-C10s, the bluetooth needs to be turned off. The hearing aids use an Acoustic Link rather than bluetooth to communicate with the app. Please reach out to our Sony OTC hearing aid support team if additional support is needed in the future. Battery powered, but tiny

Getting straight into the important details, these hearing aids are battery powered and not rechargeable. They also don't have bluetooth so you can't take calls or listen to media with them. But they are very tiny and not too noticeable to others when you're wearing them. They also do what they're supposed to do: let you hear much better. I'm using them with a Samsung S22 ultra phone and did not have any trouble with the initial setup and calibration. You do need to be in a quiet room so the hearing aids can hear the audio tones that come out of your phone to control them, and also so you can hear the test tones during the calibration process. I did have some trouble later when I tried to adjust the volume. For some reason, the app volume up/down didn't seem to make any difference to the sound coming out of the hearing aids. I tried going through the setup process again, but then the app seemed unable to connect to something--a web service?--as the icon just kept swirling. I couldn't get into the setup pages, so I just gave up for the night. The next day, however, I was able to start over and go through the setup again successfully. If you want rechargeable hearing aids, I believe Sony does have the E10 model but it's bigger and will be more noticeable in your ears. It has bluetooth, too, but for some reason it only works with IOS devices. At first I wasn't sure I would like using batteries, but it really hasn't been much of a hassle. The size 10 batteries that these use are pretty small, but are fairly easy to manage swapping in and out. They're not crazy expensive, either, and it looks like you can get them for 25 to 30 cents each. I haven't had or tried any other hearing aids, so I can't really say how these might compare to others that you might get. While they're still not exactly cheap, these are way less expensive than the ones I've priced at the old prescription hearing aid places. It's so nice that people have an OTC choice now and I think more people will actually get them now that it's do-it-yourself and the price is more reasonable.

I’m in my mid-60s and have had some hearing loss at the higher frequencies for about the last 10 years. Over that time, I have tried hearing aids on more than one occasion, but I never adopted them. I always decided that the negatives of hearing aids (comfort—or lack of it, cost) outweighed their positives (improved hearing), mainly because my hearing loss wasn’t that bad to begin with. With the recent change in government regulations now allowing hearing aids to be sold without a prescription or anything like that at retail stores rather than through hearing aid specialists, the situation is changed significantly. Most importantly, while still not exactly cheap, hearing aids are less expensive. I’ve read that, prior to this change, something like 80% of people who are suffering hearing loss and could benefit from a hearing aid don’t use one primarily because of the cost. To me, there are three aspects of hearing aids to be evaluated, and all three must end up positive for me to make wearing hearing aids an everyday thing. These are setup and ease of use, comfort, and effectiveness. As far as setup, these Sony CRE-C10 hearing aids could not be simpler. Besides the hearing aids themselves, the box includes simple instructions, a cleaning brush and cloth, a packet of ten batteries, a packet of four different-sized “click sleeves” that attach to the hearing aid and can be changed to accommodate different-sized ear canals, and a carry case. The only setup to the aids themselves in insertion of the battery. These hearing aids are small—not much larger than a paper clip—and that’s both a blessing and a curse. Obviously, smallness makes for easier insertion into your ear, and they’re less noticeable while in your ear, if that matters to you. Nothing hangs over the ear. There is a small plastic “wire” about a half-inch in length that looks like a small antenna (I thought that’s what it was at first) that you pull on to remove the aid from your ear. It’s easy, I have found, to push the hearing aid too far into your ear, so you have to be careful here. I push them in just far enough so they stay in place. Once in a while one will fall out, so be careful. You don’t want it falling into your chicken soup on the floor while you’re out shopping and where you’ll never find it. Changing to a different click sleeve can help here, but I don’t like using too large of a sleeve because then it feels like something has been stuffed into my ear. The only thing you can do to the aid itself is insert the battery. There are no other controls on it, not even an on-off switch, as the aid is powered as soon as a battery is inserted and stays powered until the battery door is opened, which you are advised to do when the aids are out at night to increase battery life. All control of the aids is through the app, which you must download to your phone and use to set up the aids for your particular hearing situation. The manual says that batteries should last five to seven days, so the 10-pack should last from 25 to 35 days, or about a month, and I’m sure this is assuming the batteries are new. As I write this, I have been using the aids for about 5 days, and I just today heard in one ear a little ding-ding-ding tone decreasing in frequency that I found out means that the battery in that aid is getting low and needs to be replaced. So I got about 5 days out of the battery. I figure I will be buying a 10-pack of batteries about every month. As I mentioned above, the smallness of these aids can be a disadvantage because handling them and inserting the battery does require some manual dexterity, something that people tend to lose as they age, and older people are generally those most in need of hearing aids. The batteries themselves are not much larger than a drop of water, and picking them out of the case, pulling off the protective tape, and inserting them into the aid oriented the correct way can get a little frustrating if you have any difficult picking up or manipulating small things. I managed it without much difficulty. I hope this continues well into my old age. As I said, setup is done with the phone app, and it is straightforward. You insert the batteries one at a time in each aid, starting with the left. The app takes you through a process where it plays tones at varying frequencies and at varying volume, with you responding how many tones you hear each time. After doing this for both ears, the aids are customized for your particular hearing-loss situation, the new settings are applied to the aids, and the setup is complete. You are given a final chance to adjust the left and right volume levels independently. All of this takes about ten minutes, and after this, the only control you have over the aids through the app is overall volume level and the relative strength of treble and bass tones. The setup process can always be repeated should you have a reason for doing so. As far as comfort goes, these are about as comfortable (i.e., unobtrusive) a pair of hearing aids as I’ve ever worn. As I said, they’re very small and very light. I’ve had them in all day for every day I’ve owned them, and they are barely noticeable. In fact, one of them fell out at one point, and I only noticed it had done so when I saw it on the table in front of me. As I said above, be careful to make sure they are snugly inserted but not overly so. As far as effectivness, the short answer is, yes, these hearing aids do improve my hearing. But in detail, this is an interesting thing to evaluate. If your hearing is very poor to begin with, I would imagine that, yes, you will notice an immediate and great improvement in your hearing when using hearing aids of pretty much any kind. But when your situation is like mine, where your hearing is really only less-than-perfect at the higher frequencies, you have to wear them for a while in various situations (at home, at work, out shopping, driving, in crowded, noisy places and in less-crowded, quiet places, watching TV, etc.) before you can determine whether or not your hearing has improved and has improved to the point that the inconvenience of having to wear hearing aids at all is outweighed by the improvement in your hearing. Are you asking people to repeat themselves less often? Do you have less difficulty when speaking to people who are wearing masks (a problem I’ve had during the pandemic)? Do you not have to turn up the volume on the TV so much? This sort of thing. Sometimes you don’t realize that you’re asking people to repeat themselves as often as you are. Sometimes you don’t realize that the TV’s volume is up as high as it is. In my case, I would say that the general answer to the above is yes. I don’t have to turn the TV volume up so much. I don’t have to turn on the closed-captioning anymore. My wife has noticed that I hear her more easily when she talks to me from across the room or calls to me from another part of the house or says something to me while I’m facing away from her. Hearing loss is usually a gradual thing that happens so slowly that you tend to take each phase of your hearing loss as the normal situation, and you don’t realize how much hearing you’ve actually lost until you put on a pair of hearing aids and your hearing is returned to normal all at once. It’s then that you realize what you have been missing. I did not have this kind of experience. My hearing loss, while real, has been limited. But I do find the increased clarity with the aids worth what it takes to own and use them. I have to say that one disadvantage in the new hearing aid-buying paradigm, where you can buy them at any store as easily as you can buy a new shirt, a quart of motor oil, or another video game, is that you have to commit to spending the money, which can still be a sizeable amount, before you can take them home and try them out. The old way, where you went to a hearing specialist where you could try different aids of different styles and technologies and see what works for you, has the advantage that you can do this in-store trying out before spending any money. On balance, though, I would guess that most people experiencing mild hearing loss or who have been told that they could benefit from a hearing aid will find that these Sony hearing aids, at least, will work for them, and the lower relative cost is a real advantage.

I have unilateral hearing loss, i.e., moderate hearing loss in one ear. As a result, I’ve worn a professional hearing aid for a number of years. This puts me in a very good position to evaluate the Sony CRE-C10 hearing aid, as I understand not just how they can help improve hearing, but also how they compare to a high-end option. The first thing you need to do is download the Sony hearing aid app (iPhone or Android), which will guide you through the setup process. Principally, this involves matching your hearing aid to your hearing loss, starting with finding the right ear tip. The CRE-C10 comes with three different size ear tips, although removing and inserting new ones can be a bit tricky. You need to find a small tool, like mustache trimming scissors, to get around the point where the tip connects. I found that simply pulling off the tip, the way the instructions say to do, causes the silicone to tear. The next step is inserting the batteries. The CRE-C10 uses replaceable batteries, a very small size 10. This means they fit the small form factor of the Sony, but it also means you should expect no more than five days before replacing the battery. My professional hearing aid also uses a size 10, and battery life is about the same for them. Make sure you close the battery case well before inserting the CRE-C10 into your ear, as the startup sound is quite loud. Once the hearing aids are powered up and in your ear, you’ll use the Sony app to adjust them to your hearing loss. Starting with the left ear, the app will generate a test tone to ensure that it is properly connected. The CRE-C10 does not use Bluetooth to connect to your phone, but rather a sonic connection. This requires that your phone volume be at a certain level and not in silent mode, a fact that the app will remind you of if there’s a problem. This is also where I had my only problem, as getting the right hearing aid to play the test tone required over a dozen attempts and a chat with Sony support. I’ve no idea why it started working, but once it did, it was flawless. After connection is verified, the app will give you a hearing test and customize the amplification for multiple frequencies. This hearing test was where I was very impressed. My type of hearing loss should be (and was) investigated further with imaging and a physical exam. The app recognized that there was a significant difference between my ears and recommended that I make an appointment with a doctor before proceeding. This was the right thing for it to do, and kudos to the Sony designers for including it. The fit of the CRE-C10 is quite comfortable, and they almost completely disappear into your ear canal. They slip snugly into place, and no one will know that you are wearing a hearing aid. They also fit well with glasses and can style headphones, something that I can’t say about my over-the-ear hearing aid. The sound of the CRE-C10 is quite good. The equalization levels seem on-target and the overall volume is good. Note that the overall volume can be adjusted at any time through the app, a useful feature. I attended a conference and had several restaurant meals wearing these so I was able to test in loud environments, and, while word clarity was not as consistent as it is with my professional hearing aid, it was still quite good with the Sony. There was no asking people to repeat themselves or answering the wrong question. Due to the enclosed design, there is some occlusion (hearing your own voice), but it’s not bad at all. I do occasionally get a short burst of feedback (whistling sound) when chewing, but again this is minor. Overall, I frequently find myself reaching for the CRE-C10 instead of my professional hearing air when going out. It's comfortable, invisible, fits with glasses and works well. As someone with moderate hearing loss, I can say that getting a pair of hearing aids will change your life. If the Sony CRE-C10 fits your needs and budget, I would highly recommend them.

Like reading glasses for your ears

I’ll try to be brief but there’s a lot to say about these depending on how bad your hearing is. I was first diagnosed with a hearing loss in the higher frequencies in my left ear in my mid twenties. Forty years later after riding and racing motorcycles etc and my right ear also had problems. My situation is pretty specific. I teach at a university in two classrooms that have terrible acoustics. I am always asking students to “say it again”. Since many of my students are not native English speakers it often seems like I’m reacting to their accent. Hearing loss in the higher frequencies most often affect consonants so sometimes it seems like people are mumbling. So I can watch tv, but I’ll often turn on subtitles because the dialogue is muddled. Hearing aids were ridiculously expensive so I just put up with my crappy hearing. Once Biden made hearing aids OTC I did a lot of research and I had zeroed in on two competitive options that were twice the price. I knew I need something that was programmable to specific frequencies when I literally stumbled on these Sony hearing aids and I thought “when was the last time a I bought a bad Sony product? Never Besides, there’s a sixty day trial so why not give them a try? So I bought them on a hunch and they are great. Pretty comfortable, very easy to program via the iPhone app. I went through the process a couple of times to really fine tune then. Completely invisible. The only issue is that my own voice sounds a little disconcerting, not bad, just a little weird, like a head cold. I understand that this is normal and something you get used to but for now I’m only using the device in my left ear. It helps make my students sound crisper and doesn’t affect my own voice as much. I use them the way I use reading glasses. I don’t need them all the time but they are life changing in certain situations

HI MarkJ - Thanks for the great reveiw, glad to hear that they've had a positive impact for you. Regarding your comments about "my own voice...." The sound perception of your own voice while using hearing aids can be a little different at first and can take a little time before we adjust to it. One thing you may want to also have a look at are the Fine Tuning Adjustments available in the app by clicking on the 3 bars in the upper left hand corner of the app and then select "Fine tuning" , there you will find the several categories such as Loudess, Own Voice, Speech, that can be adjusted. Sony’s C10 Self-Fitting OTC Hearing Aids are virtually invisible providing prescription-grade (they are FDA-registered medical devices) sound quality that can be personalized to your hearing using the Sony | Hearing control app. My Sony C10 Self-Fitting OTC Hearing Aids were a comfortable fit to my ears right out of the box. If a different size is needed both sealed and vented domes (the flexible earpiece) in various sizes are included. The vented domes can mitigate the hearing of your amplified voice. In addition the microprocessor analyzes and optimizes sounds based on your current environment. Both earbuds are wirelessly linked ear-to-ear to improve noise reduction and works quite nicely for me. They are battery powered and get around 70 hours of continuous use. They are powered by #10 (RP536) batteries that are available over the counter just about anywhere hearing-aid batteries are sold. They don’t have an IPX rating but I did not experience any problems due to sweat or light rain during my use. Wind noise reduction technology along with advanced acoustic processing reduces the irritation of wind noise outdoors, improving comfort. Artifact canceling technology eliminates amplified scratching sounds and feedback. They do not have any controls available on the earbuds themselves due to the ultra-small size and reduced visual signature. I have used expensive hearing aids and other devices. These are GREAT!

First, a little background: In August 2022, the USFDA approved a rule that created a new category of over-the-counter hearing aids. This rule intended to lower the cost of hearing aids by negating the need for a medical exam, prescription, and fitting adjustment by an audiologist, all of which can cost several thousand dollars per ear (depending on your insurance coverage). Now, for individuals with mild-to-moderate hearing loss, who may not have insurance coverage, help is available. In this case, in the form of the Sony C10 hearing aids. Included in the box are the two Sony C10 hearing aids, a storage case, multiple sizes of ‘click sleeves’, a card of six PR70 batteries, a cleaning tool, and documentation. The hearing aids themselves are fantastically small. They have a removable silicone canal sleeve, which Sony calls a ‘click sleeve’ on the inside and a removal cord on the outside. The battery door doubles as the on/off switch. Setup was a very easy process. The Sony Hearing Control app easily installed from the Google Play store. Once installed, the app will have you create an account, then will step you through setting up the hearing aids, including testing your hearing and building a customized profile for your specific circumstances. Note, the app does not pair to the hearing aids in the way earbuds or headphones do. Rather, the phone will communicate audibly with the hearing aids, like an old fashioned modem. Wearing the hearing aids, I was able to notice an immediate improvement in my hearing. My age, combined with years of abuse by loud music and loud tools, has left me frequently asking those around me to repeat themselves, much to the frustration of my family. No longer. I am now able to hold conversations both in quiet and noisy environments, without saying “what” over and over again. Additionally, I find myself actually talking quieter. I didn’t realize how much I was raising my own voice unnecessarily. Some additional points: The aids have been comfortable to wear for longer periods. They are so small that I actually wore them for several hours without my family even realizing that I had them in. And the battery life has been on par with the advertised 70 hours of usage. If you have mild-to-moderate hearing loss I recommend you seriously consider the Sony C10 hearing aids. Do it for yourself and your family. With the lower cost (also HSA/FSA eligible) and the convenient access, it seriously couldn’t be easier.

The Sony CRE-C10’s have become a Godsend. My family has been saying that I’m playing the TV too loud; playing music too loud. I’ve now had my ears checked professionally and I do have moderate hearing loss. I’ve looked in to hearing aids of all sorts (NOT the ones you see in late night TV ads — stay away from those), but I’ve been reluctant to shell out thousands of dollars. Now that the FDA has approved quality OTC hearing products, I decided it was time. I like the CRE-C10 aids because you and, maybe more importantly, others don’t know that they’re there. I looked in to aids that were rechargeable, but they all seemed to be the size of regular bluetooth earbuds and were obvious to everyone. The Sony’s are not. They discreetly fit snuggly in the ear canal and you can’t really see them unless you’re looking for them. The trade-off, of course, is that you have to keep up on the batteries (size 10), which aren’t that expensive. Sony says you get up to 70 hours on a pair of batteries. (Make sure that you open the battery compartment when your aids are not in use. ) Since I’ve saved thousands of dollars with the CRE-C10 aids, I can’t complain about a minor expense for fresh batteries. Sony’s Hearing Control app helps you set up the aids based upon your individual needs. It’s all pretty intuitive and easy to navigate. (Note: I have an android phone and the setup went just fine. The packaging says the app works with both android and iOS.) Give yourself some time to go through the guided setup which tailors both your left and right hearing needs — and you’ll want to make sure you’re in a quiet place with no interruptions. Sony also includes 4 different sizes of silicone sleeves so that you can customize the fit for your own ear canals, which may be of differing size. Trying different sizes was probably the most difficult part of the whole setup. These things are small and it’s a challenge to remove the “click sleeves” from each aid…and then get the next size installed. But, once you’ve done so, you know that it’s secure. I had a similar issue with the batteries because they’re so small. Just gotta get used to it. Maybe it’s my fat fingers… When you first try something like this, you have to realize that you’re going to possibly hear things that you haven’t heard on a regular basis for a long, long time. It can be strange — but be patient with yourself. You’ll gradually get used to these, and the overall outcome will only benefit you and those around you. I have already found the need to adjust (using my phone) things like volume and tone for certain situations. The more you use the app, the easier it becomes in such instances. My advice is to tinker with it for a few days. Don’t worry — if you think you’ve messed things up, you can always do a factory reset and start over again. Have fun; get used to them!

Sony - Self-Fitting OTC Hearing Aids I have had hearing problems for quite a while now. I have tried cheap hearing amplifiers but I found them to be lacking. I have priced professional hearings that can $3000 dollars and up but I wanted to avoid paying that kind of money if I didn't have to. So I received these Sony Over the Counter hearing aids with a price tag just a fraction of what of the professional grade hearing aids would cost. The hearing aids came by mail surprising quickly. The hearing aids are much smaller than most other hearing aids that I have seen. The small and light hearing aids provided great comfort while wearing them. I can keep these in my ears all day and hardly notice that they are in my ears. The batteries for this hearing aid are small too - size 10. It took me a while to be able to place the batteries in the hearing aid and the batteries do not last as long as I expected. The Sony hearing aids do help me to hear better. The TV is not so loud and hear most people in conversation with me better than without the hearing aids. I will say that I don't hear perfectly with them but I am satisfied with how they are helping me to hear better.

    Breakthrough in purchasing hearing aids

Sony - Completely in Canal Self-fitting OTC Hearing Aid – Black It’s the dawn of a new era when it comes to hearing aids. Because of the passage of a new regulation, real hearing aids can now be purchased over the counter at huge savings compared to the previous method. The Food and Drug Administration confirmed the ruling allowing hearing aids to be sold over the counter or through online retailers without a prescription or medical exam. To take advantage of this ruling, Sony partnered with the Danish hearing device experts, WS Audiology, to help in the development of this new over-the-counter hearing aid for folks who are suffering from mild to moderate hearing loss. It’s important to note that these are legitimate hearing aids and not just sound enhancement devices like those that have been sold in the past. These Sony hearing aids are extremely small and fit in the ear canal. Once inserted properly, they are hardly visible. They operate on replaceable Size 10 hearing aid batteries (six are included). There are also four different size vented sleeves (XS, S, M and L) to make sure that you get the best in-the-ear fit. Sony has developed a downloadable app that takes you through the installation, step-by-step. It’s important that you follow the steps EXACTLY, or you may find that you’ll need to start over. After a couple of false starts, and finally following the steps exactly as instructed, the hearing aids were set up and ready to perform the hearing tests that are included in the app. Based on the results of these tests, the app then makes fine adjustments to the hearing aids for the individual user. This ensures that you’re getting the personalized settings you might have paid dearly for in the past. Once those steps were completed, the hearing aids performed amazingly well to allow normal conversations and a much-lowered volume setting on the TV. What a welcome return to normalcy! My only concern is the replaceable battery life which is estimated to be around 70 hours. There is no on/off switch on the hearing aids, so you must open and close the battery door to turn the unit off and on. Forgetting to do that when you take the hearing aids out at night can cost you 8-10 hours of useful life. Fortunately, there is an alert signal when the battery is running low, so you’ll want to make sure you always have spare batteries available. These hearing aids come with a one-year parts and labor warranty. How much is your hearing worth to you? To me, it’s certainly worth the price of this Sony product. I would definitely recommend it as long as you feel comfortable with the replaceable battery issue of this product rather than a rechargeable battery option.

Hi BogleheadsGuide, Thanks for the detailed review! We are so glad you're enjoying your Sony CRE-C10 OTC hearing aids. Opening and closing the battery door is a typical way to turn on/off most hearing aids. You make a great point about the importance of opening that battery door when not using, to preserve battery life. Regards, Erin Sony_US

The Sony CRE-C10 Self-Fitting OTC Hearing Aids are an excellent product for anyone looking for OTC hearing aids and I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for hearing aids for mild to moderate hearing loss. These Sony hearing aids are FDA cleared and are a great option for anyone who is starting to have hearing issues and isn't quite at the point of needing hearing aids from a doctor, or for those who have had hearing aids prescribed previously but only have mild or moderate hearing loss and don't want to pay the prices for the doctor visits and prescription aids. Included in the packaging is the case with hearing aids, a total of 4 self-fitting sleeves, 6 batteries, care tools, and documentation. The jewel case is super small with enough room for the hearing aids as well as spare batteries and possibly some of the cleaning tools so that they are all at hand when needed, the included sleeves make it easy to get a good fit regardless of ear size, and the fact that a pack of batteries is included is very nice as you can get this and begin using it immediately without having to make a trip to get batteries. Setup involves downloading the app, available on Apple and Google stores, once you have the app it will check for updates for the hearing aids and then guide you through personalizing your hearing profile. Once you have completed the hearing profile and set your preferred volume you really don't need the app anymore except to occasionally check for updates, so you could theoretically have someone help you set these up and you should be good unless you need to adjust your hearing profile at a later date then you can just go through the process again. The hearing aids themselves are practically invisible as they fit well into your ear canal and the quality was really good and worked well for me. I would highly recommend these to anyone looking for OTC hearing aids and I will continue to use these as they are exactly what I need.

Sony - Self-Fitting OTC Hearing Aids

Sony - Self Fitting OTC Hearing aids are very comfortable to wear. The hearing aids are very small and easy to place the batteries into them. The quality seems very good and seems like they will last for quite some time. Hearing Control App - Doesn't give you alot of options to tweak the devices. i tried several settings over the past three weeks to find very little assistance in hearing voices better. I found that a noisy room doesn't seem so loud. The other side of this is that I could hear people farther away from me better than people near me. I was hoping for hearing aids that weren't visible to people and these fit that requirement. However, not being able to hear people near me was very discouraging. I tried three of the other tips to no avail. I am not sure that these hearing aids will be of assistance to me personally. I will try them again for the next month and if they don't get better, I will not continue to keep wearing these. They really feel great and comfortable so hoping that I can work with Sony to figure out a better setting or firmware update.

Thank you for reviewing Sony's CRE-C10 hearing aids! Listening in noise is very challenging for individuals with hearing loss. It takes the brain a while to adapt to hearing aids. I'm glad you're committed to getting used to these sounds. You may also consider the CRE-E10 hearing aids, which will be released this Winter. They will have an additional noise management adjustment in the app. Please feel free to reach out to Sony Product support if you need any help with adjustments. Regards, Erin Sony_US
