Customers consistently note the excellent sound quality, comfortable fit, and discreet size of the Self-Fitting OTC Hearing Aids. The long battery life is also a frequently praised feature. However, some customers have expressed concerns regarding the app and suitability for more significant hearing loss.

Not Compatible with My Hearing Issues

These hearing aids came nicely packaged. After opening it up, I found all the accessories that you would need to maintain the hearing aids. First thing to do is to download and install the mandatory setup app. After that, you will need to initiate the calibration proram. I found that the hearing aids fit comfortably in my ear. The setup program is pretty cool - it has many similarities to hearing tests that I have taken in the past. However, due to my particular hearing situation (deaf in left ear with severe hearing loss in the right), I was unable to complete ithe calibration process even after multiple attempts due to them being incompatible with my hearing situation. The calibration process requires starting with the left ear (allowing a choice of which ear to start with would have been nice), so I placed it into my right ear and completed the left side calibration. Then I removed it and inserted the right side aid into my right ear and the process always fails in the right ear calibration process.
Therefore, I am sadly unable to use them or evaluate them even though I had really high hopes for them.

Hi TechDude, We are sorry the OTC hearing aids weren't compatible with your hearing profile. Per the FDA, OTC hearing aids are designed for people with a percieved mild to moderate hearing loss. There is not OTC hearing aid for a severe hearing loss at this time. Regards, Erin

Sony Completely in Canal Self-fitting OTC Hearing Aid
The Sony in ear hearing aids are exactly what they say they are. They resemble the sound of hearing aids from the mid 90’s but can be easily adjusted to fit your sound profile. They are completely concealed in the ear and unless someone is looking for them they don’t see them at first. They come with 4 sets of ear fittings and 10 batteries. They batteries are easy to change but if you have limited hand use you will need help with changing batteries. To turn them off you open the battery door. Battery life is good as it would be expected to be using hearing air batteries. Once set up with your phone they become independent and no longer require your phone to be used. They are meant to be used as a set, although I have noticed that installing just one seems to work as expected. They also include a cleaning brush and instructions on how to use and clean them. Being they are not rechargeable is nice because hearing aid batteries are available everywhere and you can always buy more if you’re on vacation. Rather than trying to find the charger you packed.
I am happy with their ease of use and the app works you through the complete setup. It also has some adaptive settings that allow more control and if you try them and don’t find something that works for you it gives you contact information to contact Sony and someone will help you with making the changes.

I have another brand of CIC (Completely In Canal) hearing aids that were professionally fitted. That pair cost over $3,000 so I was a bit skeptical of these. However, Sony has been making things that fit in peoples' ears for years and years, so I decided to give them a try. The calibration process is straightforward (using a smart phone). You listen to a series of tones and tell the app whether you heard zero, one, two, or three tones. Each error is individually calibrated. That's all there is to the setup (other than battery insertion). The Sony hearing aids come with a complete set of ear tips, a small cleaning brush, a few batteries, and a carrying case. They use #10 hearing aid batteries and Sony claims you get 70 hours of use from a battery. I think I'm getting slightly more than that, but I haven't had them long enough to create a good average. The best thing about these is that they fit well. I had stopped wearing my more expensive hearing aids because of a bit of discomfort. They also had an annoying habit of working their way out of my ears if I was chewing something. The Sony hearing aids don't seem to have those issues, though it's still early. At any rate, I'm quite happy with these. They do the job and fit better than the ones the audiologist fitted.

Couldn't Fine Tune to My Needs.

I give these only 3 stars. I wish I could rate the hardware and the testing software separately. My issue is with the software that tests your hearing and adjusts the hearing aids to your hearing. I have worn hearing aids for a couple of years now. My audiologist characterizes my hearing loss as mild. My main complaint over many years has been tuning voices I want to hear out of background noise in public. The hearing aids I wear took several adjustments from the audiologist before I found them helpful in tuning out background noise while boosting the frequencies I am deficient in. I usually do not wear them until I am heading out to a public place. I am mostly OK without them around the house. When I received these hearing aids, I went through the test procedure. The first test told me something like it was unable to diagnose my hearing. On the second run through it worked fine as did the other ear. The hearing aids I wear are behind the ear with a small speaker in the ear. I feel like I get a lot of ambient sound as well as the sound coming through the hearing aid with the units that I have had. The Sony units, being totally in the ear canal, while comfortable, give me the sensation of my ears being stopped up. There is little to no ambient sound getting round the totally in the ear canal hearing aid. I have the feeling of having many frequencies totally blocked while only getting boosted frequencies through the hearing aids. Around the house I hear the ice machine loudly from the next room and the whoosh of air from the HVAC vents while feeling like low and mid frequencies are blocked. I wore them to two restaurants, one more crowded and louder than the other. I had the same sensation in both instances. I got mainly high frequencies from the voices around our table and again felt like I was missing the lower end. The sounds I was hearing were background noise and people to both sides of me more than the people at my table. In both cases I was able to better have a conversation with the people at my table after taking the hearing aids out than I was able to with them in. The hearing aids I have worn for a while help considerably with reducing the background rumble and have microphones that are forward facing. When driving with these I again feel like my ears are stopped up and I am missing quite a bit of sound. I tried testing again and the fine-tuning programs and was unable to become comfortable with these hearing aids. I am reasonably sure that the physical units are capable of being tuned to my hearing loss and the issue is in the testing and tuning that the software does. If the hearing aids were better spectrally balanced to my hearing and passed through a fuller spectrum, I think they would be fine. As these hearing aids are, they are not a good fit for my hearing loss.

I have been using my devices for the better part of year, and definitely recommend them. The set-up was easy, the sound quality is excellent, and I find them comfortable.
I did have one device fail, but found the Sony warranty program easy to work with to get a replacement pair quickly.
Previously I used old-school behind-to-ear devices, and I much prefer these, especially wearing glasses or sunglasses. Additionally my old devices did not support Bluetooth, and I really enjoy that feature.

Best of 5 hearing amplifiers I have had

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
First, you must understand that these are NOT hearing aids, per se. These are hearing amplifiers. Ok, that said, I have tried a number of these amplifiers, and this is the best of the lot. They are discreet, i.e. invisible and are battery operated. They fit great. I much prefer the battery to the rechargeable and to the bluetooth aids. If your hearing loss is not critical, these are perfect. I don't miss any dropped words in conversations and can hear those speakers who essentially whisper talk. I typically wear one at a time. They are great outdoors, in church/classroom, and in conversation. They are a bit annoying in noisy atmospheres like restaurants or, say, a basketball game as they amplify the loud surroundings. They are tiny so you have to be careful not to lose them. In the end, I would say, best in my experience, worth the bit extra cost from like a jabra or iPod pros which get better reviews, but I've tried them and the Sony's are better! Hey, my wife can't say I don't listen anymore :)

Over-the-counter honest- to- God hearing aids are finally here -- thanks to new federal regulations.
And if you are one of those people who just doesn't hear quite as well as you once did, this set of diminutive inside-the-ear canal hearing aids from Sony may be just the ticket -- despite a few shortcomings.
Don't be intimidated by the idea getting these things up and running. Setup is probably a lot easier than you think. You don't need a medical degree or any special training to do it.
This particular model uses a "Hearing" app from Sony that walks you through process (smartphone required) , beginning with inserting the tiny batteries (six are included that can last up to 70 hours each). The app then directs you how to properly inset the hearing aids in your ears and then steps you through a series of hearing tests that set the proper amplification levels for each ear.
It's pretty simple really. The hearing tests are just a series of beeps at different volumes and frequencies, which you may or may not hear depending on your level of hearing loss. At the end of each test, you report how many beeps you heard. The test repeats about a dozen times and when you finish, the custom settings are applied.
The end result was somewhat mixed in my case. In my experience, anyway, all hearing aids produce a somewhat harsh sound that is anything but natural. These sound better than others I have tried, with less squealing feedback and scratchiness that is typical of some hearing aids.
Volume is improved, which is the point. But the sound is still artificial and scratchy compared to normal hearing. It takes some getting used to.
The app gives allows you to customize your hearing experience any time you want, since it is built around simple volume and tone controls. And you can redo the overall setup again if you are not happy with the initial results. Just don't expect miracles. These hearing aids will not magically restore your hearing to what you had when you were younger.
Perhaps the biggest downside to these Sony hearing aids is they run on tiny throwaway batteries instead of rechargable ones, which are much more convenient. Seniors with poor eyesight, motor skills, as well as poor hearing may struggle with getting the tiny batteries into the tiny hearing aids. Even worse, they need to be replaced often if you wear them a lot. Batteries last a few days to a week at best and that can get expensive over time. (The size 10 batteries these hearings use cost between 25 cents to $1 each, depending on brand).
You can extend battery life a good bit by sliding open the tiny battery compartment when the hearing aids are not in use -- the only way to actually turn the hearing aids OFF. That is kind of a pain, however, because of how small they are.
But that small size thing good in terms of aethetics. They are all but invisible when you wear them, with no bulky gizmo hanging behind your ear -- the standard design for most hearing aids until recently. So the "I am embarrassed to be wearing hearing aid" quotient is low. But the small size also makes them harder to handle, insert or remove from your ears and change batteries.

Effective Hearing Aids; Easy Setup; Easy to Use

These are in-ear battery powered hearing aids that are set up and controlled by an app. They come with a storage case, four sets of different sized sleeves, six batteries, cleaning brush & cloth, and a user guide booklet.
The first step in setting up the hearing aids is to insert the batteries. The hearing aids are designated left and right with an L and R printed on the corresponding aid and each aid gets one battery that is inserted mirror opposite on each side. At first, I found the correct orientation of the battery on each side to be a little confusing and I suggest downloading the app and watching the video before trying to insert the batteries. Once the batteries are inserted and the battery door closed, the hearing aids are On, and are ready to be set up. The app has a video that walks you through how to insert the aids and how to change to a different size sleeve if needed for a good fit. The setup consists of a hearing test on each ear with the aids inserted to personalize each side to suit your hearing ability. It's very straightforward, easy to use and easy to understand. Once the setup is done, the hearing aids are ready to use. The app has a volume control and tone control (treble/bass balance). Volume and tone are for both sides, they cannot be individually adjusted, but that is the purpose of the initial setup. The setup can be rerun if needed.
In use I found that these hearing aids are very effective. They greatly enhance environmental sounds and enable me to watch television at a lower volume than I might otherwise use. Speech comes through crisp and clear. It's easy to adjust volume and tone on the app as needed. The aids have a clear plastic removal cord that makes it easy to remove them from your ear.
When not in use the battery door on each aid needs to be opened to turn them off. The storage case is secured with a latch and is easy to open and close. It has a cushion inside to keep the hearing aids from rattling around.
Bottom line these hearing aids are easy to setup, easy to use, and effective. I didn't encounter any negative issues with them, and the price is competitive for this type of product.

SONY HEARING AIDS - Nice Product!

I have been using the Sony Self-Fitting OTC Hearing Aids for almost 2 weeks. My reason for wanting to try them - besides being easy to acquire without going to a Doctor - was because I wanted to "try them out" to see if they would reduce the "ringing" I continually have in my ears (especially my right ear). While I don't think anything will permanently eliminate the ringing, it was nice to see that these hearing aids made the ringing more bearable when I was using them, and they helped me HEAR a bit better, especially in noisy places.
The Sony Hearing Aids were somewhat easy to setup, but had to go through the process 3 times. The left aid setup correctly and easily, but everytime I would do the right aid it had problems, sometimes not able to "find" the hearing aid via bluetooth, and would mess up the left aid causing me to start over from "Step 1" with the left aid, then the right. It shouldn't do that. Even though both hearing aids are not working 100% correct (...which I'll try again after getting back from vacation in a couple of weeks...), I think overall it's a good product.

I was a little hesitant to purchase my first hearing aids without an audiologist, but I read many of the reviews and thought I would try the latest ones from a trusted brand. I have not been disappointed. They are comfortable and since I have mild/moderate loss, I hear quite well now with them. They were easy to setup initially, and with the phone app, I can change the volume, balance, sound quality (more bass or treble) and further fine tune them as needed. Great value considering the price of many others I was quoted.

I give the Sony - Self-Fitting OTC Hearing Aids a 5 star because of the, price, the way they fit my ear canals, and the assist to my hearing. It will take some trial and error to get them set to your liking, or it was for me.
Here is the dilemma, you go, have a hearing test conducted, and pay $3000.00 plus dollars for a set of hearing aids. I don't know that they would sound any different than the Sony hearing aids or be any better.
I have Tinnitus, so I have been told, constant ringing in my ears which can be severe at times and mild at others. I had a little concern with using hearing aids with Tinnitus however there was no effect to the Tinnitus and there was assistance to my right side hearing, which is what I seemed to be having an issue with.
The Sony C10 hearing aids were easy to set up with the Sony Hearing Control app. I had to repeat the hearing test multiple times before the test was accepted and I could move forward with the final steps. The hearing test is an array of dings and tones of which you check, one that you heard any tones and two how many of the tones, of varying loudness.
The Sony C10 Hearing Aids are very comfortable and sit, almost, unseen in your ears. The batteries are very small, so having big hands made it a little tough getting the batteries in. You have to remember to open the battery compartment if storing the hearing aids or you will drain the batteries. The hearing aids come with an good variety of ear pieces for the best fit and a package of batteries.

These are amazing. If you're used to wearing amplifying headphones/earbuds or using your airpods to amplify sound, then you're going to wonder if these things are even on. Goodbye headaches, earaches, and constantly fumbling with the volume to find the setting that lets you hear without wincing at an unexpectedly loud sound.
The Sony hearing aids are discreet and work wonderfully. These are my first real hearing aids. Like many, I forewent the expensive cost of a consultation in favor of alternatives like the Bose Hearphones (now discontinued) and the sound amplification found in popular earbuds using your phone's accessibility settings. -- I expected to hear the surrounding airflow and exaggeratedly loud feedback from nearby sounds like I do with hearing amplification, but instead the Sony's seem to just amplify the tones I'm normally unable to hear.
The app needs a lot of work - it's buggy and prompts me to log in even though I'm logged in. Setting up the hearing aids took a while, and I don't want to lose my settings while troubleshooting the login issue.
The hearing aids have little latching doors that hold the batteries. You'll need to remember to open the battery door each time you take them out so that it doesn't drain the battery. The case has a spot to hold spare batteries which is a nice touch.
These are top notch -- thank you Sony for putting these out on the market.
