I have it in a large living room along with the Sony SA-SW5 subwoofer and they do a good job with filling the room with sound easily. I didnt purchase the additional surround sound speakers because i wanted to stay in a certain budget range, but plan on buying them down the road as that is the ideal setup sony wants you to have for a full immersive experience. Without the rear speakers you can still enjoy the system and be wowed by it. This was ordered online and came in two shipments. It was replacing a 10yr old samsung 3.1 soundbar system. The sony soundbar arrived first and i was amazed at how the sony soundbar blew it away on its own. The sound was larger and clearer compared to the samsung soundbar and i was able to get the effects of the sound bouncing off the walls and ceiling with just the sony soundbar. I was also amazed that the built-in subwoofers on the sony soundbar (on max) were putting out as much bass or at least 90% as much bass as the samsung subwoofer on its own without the added sony subwoofer. When the sony SA-SW5 subwoofer came in, it definitely added to the cinematic sound in the room and i was happy with it. I am a bass heavy head and the sony SA-SW5 gets me there somewhere between 90%-80% there. I have a klipsch 12' home theater subwoofer that gets me 100% there (happy land) when using for any occasion. The reason for the 4-Star rating is because on default, using the automatic sound field optimizer, i couldnt quite get it to give me that larger than life feeling on its own. It gave me okay results when i used it. After manual tuning it, it gave me better results. I probably still need to tweak it some to get that sweet spot sound. My other issue with the sound bar is that there is not a music mode on the soundbar or no way to switch out of the default listening experience. You can turn the sound field feature off (sound bouncing off the walls), but then the sound just sounds muted/muffled, so its not a real option. I did see in a review, that you were able to active different sound modes if you had a high end sony tv, but i feel sony should give you this option off the back instead of making you buy add-ons in their ecosystem to get it. Outside of those two things, its a great system and im sure anyone will enjoy it.

Better Sounding Than It Has a Right To

Very sleek, very large, and very good sounding. This one has quite a bit of weight to it as well. While most soundbars will never take the place of a dedicated speaker set up, this one will at least sound better than you'd expect it to. The build feels premium and has a simple interface. Easy to set up, and has a great wide soundstage (for a soundbar). Replaced a JBL Bar 3.1 system with this and couldn't be happier.

Sony Smart Soundbar

I was a bit hesitant to purchase it because of the overall size and it was the mid-level option available, but this thing rocks the room. And it synched with the Sony tv remote, making use even easier. Very satisfied with the performance and sounds this unit produces. Do not waiver if you're on the fence, jump on over and grab it!

Good soundbar for movies

Sound is nice and clear and really enhances movie watching. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars versus 5 is because it does not have a way to level out really loud parts of a movie (ie.. car chases, etc..). We keep the volume high in order to hear dialog - then an explosion or something happens and we find ourselves constantly adjusting the volume.

One of the best Soundbars!!

After doing research of the various soundbars on the market my decision came down to this one the HT-A5000. since it's bigger brother was a bit more expensive the HT-A7000 I made the decision on this one instead. After having it for a week now I can honestly say that it sounds pretty good!! I know there are Audiophiles out there who are very particular on sound profile and what not, but this Sony soundbar can satisfy the "average" listener such as myself, my wife, etc. We're not looking for sound perfection. As long as it can sound good, has clarity, has good power this soundbar is it!! In fact most average people are not super technical when it comes to the listening experience. This soundbar the HT-A5000 has more than enough good sound punch that it fills our living living room immensely. It never sounds distorted at high volumes and is more than capable to handle music when you're not watching a tv show or a movie. Setup is easy and simple but as always you may want to read the manual a little before just diving straight in and fire it up so you know what the functions of the remote is. I do recommend that you pair it with one of Sony's subwoofers that are meant for the HT-A Sony soundbar line and be amazed at how it all comes together. Reason for the 4 stars is that my only criticism of the HT-A5000 is that it doesn't have "App" support like it's bigger brother the HT-A7000 and is a little limited in how you can shape the sounds to meet your satisfaction. BUT with the limited setting it has to adjust and all, you can eventually find a settings it has on board you can tune it a little. It does take a few days or so to get used to listening to this soundbar, but after a while it eventually grows on you. Granted soundbars are not what everyone wants for their home theater experience, but for someone like me and my family who doesn't want to spend upwards in individual components and have gobs of wires all over the place for a system, the Sony HT-A5000 is a worthwhile investment. In the end, my opinion is that this particular Sony model is a good mid-level unit for a simplified listening experience!!

Good but Missing something

This soundbar is absolutely gorgeous to look at but I wish it sound as good as it looked. That's not to say it's a bad soundbar but for my taste I just felt like it was missing something so ultimately I exchanged it for the a7000 soundbar and that's where I got that extra sound I Missing from the a5000. Ultimately this is the art of up selling but if you are someone who doesn't own a soundbar and have any of the bravia xr TVs I do recommend it for the center channel mode and got vocals to understand the dialog.

The only reason im knocking off a point is it having only 1 hdmi port means if i want to play PS5 Xbox or Switch I have to disconnect one each time i decide to use a different console. Overall best audio Ive ever experienced when used in combination with the sub and back speakers sold separately.

Very Nice Sound

The installation tech suggested we may be happy with the low end sound from just the sound bar, but we're not. The other issue, and it is significant in our case, is that there is no connection port for a wired sub woofer, which is all we have.

Sony does not make front speakers so no 5 channel

I am very bad with electronics and got it connected in less than 2 minutes on my first try. It sounds amazing. I also have the sw5 300 watt sub woofer and rs5 rear speakers. It was a breeze connecting those wirelessly to the sound bar, however they did not connect automatically i had to manually connect them. It is very easy to manually connect them and again took maybe 2 mins. Here is the complaint i have, and the onpy complaint. The a5000 is a 5 channel sound bar and the a7000 is a 7 channel meaning the 5 channel is a subwoofer, two rear speakers and teo front speakers. The 7 channel is the same but an extra 2 center speakers. My complaint is i went to best but over the weekend to buy 2 front speakers to complete my 5.1 channel setup for my 5.1 channel sound bar and SONY DOES NOT MAKE FRONT OR CENTER SPEAKERS. I xpuld have saved a little money and bought the a3000 which is a 3 channel because even though the a5000 is a 5 channel sound bar, sony does not make front speakers and it is not possible to get a 5.1 channel surround sound set up.

You won't be disappointed

I purchased a Sony Bravia TV and knew I had to get a better system than the older Samsung I had. I found that this soundbar performed at the level I need it for the area I am in. I would say that even though the bar itself has some base and it is an upgrade from the tv speakers, having the subwoofer is a must. It really hits hard. I just purchased the rear up firing speakers. To get the true movie experience, a must have. I am very pleased with my purchase at this time. One thing I have noticed is that the sound goes out for a split second. Not sure if it is the system or the tv channels it self. I stream everything so it could be glitches. Not really a terrible thing. I have read the 1 and 2 star reviews and don't understand. Either the got a bad system, as they are made by people or their expectations are so out there, nothing can make them happy. I give it 4 stars because of the volume levels. I run it around 30-35 on regular tv and around 50+ on movies. I wish on the lower levels the volume was better so I could run the movies on the 35-40 level and tv around 20-25. Not a deal breaker....just wishing. 4 thumbs up!
