The FE 50mm 1.4 is a necessity for any portrait photographer using the Sony Mirrorless Full-Frame System. Brilliant bokeh is easy with the max aperture of f/1.4. It's also an incredibly versatile lens, as I have used this lens for astrophotography on occasion.

I like volunteering taking pictures at family and friends' special events (nothing professional). I owned the Zeiss Sel55f18z, but I needed a faster lens for my indoor and low light shots. I have been using the Sel50f14z lens for a couple of days, and I am impressed. The lens is sharp even wide open at f/1.4. The colors are great. Depth of field are also better than the 55mm f/1.8 lens.
The Cons: This lens is heavy, probably 2.5 times the weight of the Sel55f18z lens. This lens is expensive.
My overall feel... this Sel50f14z is a keeper!

I ordered this as my first lens when purchasing my Sony A7R III. Clearly a nice, great quality lens. Even includes a nice bag if you need to store it. Having the aperture ring on the lens is a nice touch and of course it being a 1.4 makes it a very fast lens.
If you can afford it, definitely worth it.

One of the best 50mm's but about 20% too big and e

This new Sony lens in impressively sharp in the center, and really sharp in the corners as its should for its price tag. Interestingly it was released at the same time as Rokinons first autofocusing lens, also a 50mm 1.4 for the E mount that’s less than half the price. I ordered both of them to see how they compare and if this Sony’s price tag is worth it.
Starting off with the exterior the lens is huge compared to other 50mm 1.4’s. This is one of my downsides of this lens. Using it on the A7R2 it does feel a bit too big for the body and if you’re attaching a manfrotto plate that most use for video, you have to bring it to the very front as the lens is too large to fit with the plate causing a very front heavy setup. The Rokinon is also a large lens but smaller so the plate just barely fit under it. Making up for the size is the 11 blade iris which gives off a very smooth and circular bokeh (most lenses are 7-9 blade) and a manual aperture ring that can also be de clicked for smooth adjustment.
The autofocus is fairly fast but the Rokinon was faster (but a bit less accurate). The manual focus ring is quite responsive compared to other Sony fly by wire electronic focus rings, and I could get consistent repetitive rack focuses with it.
If you are making a living with your photos and or video and could use a great 50mm in your lineup this lens is definitely worth it. Its one of the best 50mm available and definitely the best one for an E mount. If you’re a hobbyist or a pro on a tighter budget I’d say the Rokinon is a better bang for the buck and is 90% of the lens for about 45% of the price, with a smaller size/weight advantage. I have a full comparison with sample photos and video on Youtube that you can check out, just search for “50mm 1.4 Rokinon Sony Max Yuryev”. It was hard to choose between a 4 or a 5 star (I wish I could have done a 4.5) but I ended up giving this lens a 4 because of the size being larger than most other 50mm 1.4 which is a bigger deal when the lens is designed for small mirrorless cameras, and because I think the price is a big higher than it should be like many Sony lenses. I’d personally think this lens should be priced about $1200, and it may be in a few years.

Great, Sharp 50mm from Sony

I have used Canon's 50mm 1.2L and then Sigma's 50mm 1.4 Art lenses on my Canon. When I switched to Sony a few months ago I picked up the Sony 55mm 1.8 and it was good. It was a sharp lens and it's 1.8 aperture let in decent light and allowed for decent to good subject isolation. But there was always something just a little off by this lens compared to some of my favorite shots with the Canon and Sigma lenses in my past. I decided to make the plunge and buy this after only one month of shooting with the 55mm.
In a nutshell this lens rocks. It is wonderfully made, rock solid and metal. The images are super sharp, even wide open. I love the manual aperture ring and having my AF/MF controls back on the lens. I'll admit it is big compared to the other to 50ish mm lenses Sony puts out but I love this lens, it is what I should have got to begin with.
If you have the extra money, and size isn't a huge factor to you get this one. You won't regret it.

Ok, I had the 55 F1.8 before. That lens was outstanding for a variety of known reasons: size, quality, price...
Well, for those that love the 50mm focal length on a FF sensor, this lens adds dimensions and character. It may sound subjective but after a while you know what your lens delivers, that was the case with my 55mm; this lens adds a variety of layers to my photographs that make it such a pleasure to shoot with. You have all those particular Sony lenses for well defined conditions. This is top notch at the all mighty 50mm focal length, basically translating what my eyes see.
