Brings back memories for us old people!

    |
    Posted .

I ordered this gift for my husband and he loves it. Due to some of the early reviews, I was nervous about it. But, those reviews are obviously from purchasers who either take gaming way too seriously OR aren’t old enough to remember that this is simply the way these games looked and responded back in the nineties. We bought our first PS1 in 1996 and it was very advanced for the time. Since then, gaming systems have come a long way, making this system seem old and not worth the money. This system is geared towards people over the age of 40 who enjoy the simplicity of putting the smack down on their teenagers who can’t beat their parents at Tekken 3 because the controller doesn’t have toggles. If you are looking for a true throwback, this is it. If you are a young gamer with the latest and greatest, keep walking.

    Good introduction to PS Library

    |
    Posted .

This is a pretty good little emulator. It's very small and lightweight and comes with an HDMI cable. I wish that the controllers had analog sticks, but they are okay, a little small for my hands. I wish it came with a wall adapter for the power cable (USB), but I had one lying around, so it's not a huge deal. The menu is pretty decent. There are some good games, but only 20, and some of the big PS hits like Spyro are absent. If you've never owned or really played a Playstation, this is probably a good way to try it out and see if you like it. If you just want a good retro console and are willing to pay a bit more, the NES or SNES Classic is probably a better choice.

    $100? Meh, $20? Sold!

Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.

For the initial $100 price tag and with the full lineup being a bit disappointing, I originally dismissed the PS classic as not worth bothering with. Bad reviews further reinforced this when it came out. But for 20 bucks? I figured the hardware alone was worth that. Control sticks would have been appreciated but at least the controllers are good quality. The emulation isn't perfect and the game selection could be better but, again, for $20? I'd say it's worth it at the very least as a collectible. The low price, combined with third party software solutions to some of the system's flaws, makes it easy to give it four stars. If you're not buying it on sale though...meh.

In its intended form the PS Classic was a misfire. Several implementation errors, games I never wanted to play, games I already played with little interest in playing again, and games that were good but aged horribly. But... When the price came down to a mere $20 and hacks figured out how to run any software from the USB power port, it became a whole new machine. Go to the site Arcade Punks and you can obtain emulator packages that give access to the entire PS1 library and THOUSANDS of games from other game systems. This make sit more like a Raspberry Pi in a nice classic case with included controllers. Hard to beat.

    Old School Games

I like the idea of putting a bunch of 'old school' games into 1 system. However, the quality of the graphic is not great. It's better to play with smaller display than the big screen TVs. Most of these games weren't made for the big screen at the time. If you have a small TV set at home (32") good to have this to play those classic games.

PlayStation Classic is now a must-buy

The PlayStation Classic has a great collection of PlayStation One games, perfect for those that want to recapture the feeling of experiencing games like Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy VII. At its original price point ($100), I would have told you to stay away from it, but its current $19.99 price is too good to pass up. The package itself has its shortcomings, like the lack of analog sticks on its controllers, the game themselves have not aged as well as the NES and SNES Classics and their pixelated counterparts, but that is not reason enough to keep someone from getting it, especially at such a great price.

    Blast from the Past!

I was very excited to see Sony going retro with this PS1 classic. The initial price made me hesitant however as I soon learned of the limitations of the system. When BBY did a price drop, it became more likely for me to purchase it. I loved the throw-back design of the system and the games included. It is fun to play some of the old PS1 games, but it is limited only to what is onboard the chip, so if you get bored, what you have is what you got. Overall, could have gotten an emmulator for a cheaper price, but it wouldn't be in this cool form factor. Unless you're a die-hard Playstation fan, it might not make sense for you to get it.

    Playstation deserved better

In terms of hardware, the Playstation Classic mostly hits the mark. The detail of the Playstation unit itself is wonderfully rendered and genuinely worth keeping on display . Even the plug ends of the controllers are similar to the originals. It's too bad the controllers weren't based on the Dual Shock controllers, but I'm guessing that would have added even more cost to this device. As for software, this is where Sony really disappointed most fans. The selection is baffling as it includes games in series with much better sequels and/or games that don't really exemplify the best of the Playstation era. A lot of this is possibly due to licensing and possibly even porting issues, but surely Twisted Metal 2 should have been on this system versus the original (and I don't know anyone who clamored for Battle Arena Toshinden to make an appearance). Some games are even the PAL (pre-HD TV European television standard) version, which run slower and at a slightly different resolution than NTSC (used in North America and Japan). Though I have warmer, fuzzier feelings for the NES, SNES, and forthcoming Genesis classic systems, I absolutely loved the Playstation era. The lackluster nature of the PS Classic really saddens me, especially when it's clear that it's a better system when modded versus stock.

The reduced price of the retro device is what made me jump on this buy. It is ok, but not great. The 20 or so game selection is questionable, but still includes a couple of my favorites. On pure nostalgia, I will give this a good rating.

It’s terrible for the included games, but if you replace the firmware and load in retroarch, you can emulate almost all 8 and 16 bit systems. Plus PSP and obviously PlayStation. So it becomes awesome after you do that, but you must be very technically inclined to know how to do all that.

I grabbed a couple of these on sale for $20. It's well worth that price, but I wouldn't pay the original price when they were first released. I was never a huge fan of the earlier PS systems, but this is a nice system to round out my collection of similar retro consoles by Nintendo, Sega, and Atari. Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy IV are the highlights. The interface is friendly and the emulation seems to work well.

    Could have been better

I'm reviewing this solely as the product that it was sold as, without any modifications that's readily available on the internet. Starting with the good parts: For the price, it's a nice retro console and probably the cheapest at this point, thanks to all of the things it lacks, which drove the price to what it is today. It comes with nice solid controllers, albeit, no analog sticks like the original PS1. It's pretty easy to boot up and play. USB port for controllers is very nice in that you can probably hookup any other USB gaming controller and play, plus you can extend the short controller using a USB extension cable. Half the games are good solid games. The bad: Why doesn't it come with a power brick? It's really not that expensive and with the original asking price, I can't understand why they didn't include one. The controllers are very short. Some games are pretty bad. PAL 50fps conversion was a horrible idea. For the original price, it really doesn't come with enough games. For the price that was paid, not too bad. Overall it was a good purchase, at the current price, but if Sony decides to do something similar with PS2, please take note of all of the feedback that buyers are giving you and use them.

Nice retro trip, could have been better

    |
    Posted .

For what it is this retro console is solid although not worth the full price. The games on it are half of the better games I would expect and then the rest are sort of a slog of exclusives that no one really wanted. Assuming you are excited to play at least some of the included games then this gets the job done just fine. It was a miss in terms of not having more of the iconic games fans would have wanted and the controller not having dual analog sticks is shocking and affects some of these games which used to require having the original dual analog controller. Having a better overall game selection and actual analog sticks would have made this a 5 star purchase for sure.

Cons: Sony did a terrible job implementing this user interface, the SONY logo has to play before every game load (irritating). I don't mind the game selection screen, I'm not very picky. The game choices are the problem. They could have at least put some fun MEMORABLE games on here. The ones they chose did NOT age well at all. Pros: Metal Gear is by far the best game on here. They also included TWO controllers. I love how light the system is, and easy to take on the go. I got mine very very cheap from Best Buy, so I feel like I got my money's worth.

Awesome if you're willing to tweak it a bit.

We bought this on sale, so I am going to review it based on the price we paid. It's a cool little retro console, that does have a nice selection of must-have PSX games. Unfortunately, while it would be a fun way for some people to relive their youth, it does come with a few drawbacks. Namely: 1. Some of the games come in PAL versions, which are arguably inferior to NTSC. 2. There is no way to play your old game CDs or update the game library without jailbreaking the system. 3. The emulation is unfortunately not perfect, which is a shame. Fortunately, if you're willing to dig a bit and dedicate some time to installing custom software on it you can fix the above-mentioned issues and get an awesome little emulation box with an obvious visual cool factor.
