I owned the Sony 1080 since 2017 and was looking to upgrade. This new unit is an improvement across the board. Dialogue is clearer and the separation between channels is much more distinct. The 360 audio features feel a little gimmicky, but are ok for certain things. My turntable using an external amp sounds much improved with this unit. The ability to “lift the dialogue” only works with ceiling mounted atmos height speakers, so I haven’t had a chance to test that.

Perfect! Replaced the sdr790 or something It had the 4k the atmos the 7.1 but it would not allow PS5 passthrough. That sucked. So I had to run HDMI and optical. Well doing this caused the receiver to constantly switch inputs cause it kept reading multiple inputs so i constantly had to hit the sound source on remote at least 3-4 times. Well after a year of that i was done. So I did research and found the An1000 to handle what i had. Now the PS5 works and only need to run HDMI cable now. No more constant source picking. And it sounds much better than the sony model below it. Guess thats the difference between $400 and $800. Sometimes going cheap is just fine, sometimes it costs you more in the long run.

I was a little nervous about purchasing an open-box Sony Receiver, but for nearly half the price, I decided to give it a try, knowing I could return it if I wasn't satisfied. After setting it up, I was very happy with the sound and video. The picture quality from my computer was much clearer than it was with the receiver I replaced.

Loving my new Sony receiver. Bought open box “no remote..no manual”. Still working on tuning this thing and software. Could be a 5/5 lol. Ive read that some people are having trouble with remote after update. I can attest and give two thumbs up to the “all for one remote” sold at best buy. It does everything receiver remote would do.

Good Sound - buggy CEC

I bought this refurbished to replace my Onkyo TX-NR828 that had the older HDMI 1.4 connections. The surround effects from this receiver are much more pronounced (once calibrated) than the old Onkyo. The sound feels less warm/rich. On balance it is much better for movies, but not as good for music. My biggest complaint is the buggy CEC implementation. The volume does not display on the screen when changed via a remote that is controlling the Sony via CEC (like from an Apple TV or Nvidia Shield). Sony really needs to fix this, because it is annoying. CEC is not rocket science. On balance it is good, especially if you are not using it with a projector (where the receiver might be behind you).

Hi DrMindcrime, thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review and comparison. Your feedback is helpful in identifying where Sony receivers excel and where there are areas for improvement. Let me address your comments point by point:
We’re thrilled to hear that you've noticed enhanced surround effects following your calibration! Sony AV receivers, particularly our latest models like the STR-AN1000 and the STR-AZ series, are designed to deliver truly immersive surround experiences. With advanced surround formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, these receivers draw listeners into the heart of the action when watching movies. This can result in a sound signature that feels more detailed and dynamic.
It's not uncommon for users who have experience with other brands, such as Onkyo, to find Sony's sound less "warm or rich," particularly during music playback. This reflects the distinct tuning philosophies that different manufacturers adopt. While some users prefer Sony for cinematic experiences, others may favor the musical characteristics of various brands. Your observations resonate with common feedback, and we remain committed to providing exceptional home theater experiences.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you may have encountered and appreciate your feedback, which we will continue to track. For assistance with the CEC/OSD concern, we recommend reaching out to Sony Support directly with your product model and firmware version.

This is my second Sony home theater receiver. The sonic experience is excellent, but it has software issues. Routinely it starts up not remembering the last used input. You have to tell it what input to use every time you turn it on, which gets old really fast. At less than less than 2 years old, it has failed the same way as the STR-DN 1080 that I had before it. The soft start power amp relay doesn’t activate so there’s no sound output. Poor quality.

Hi Henkerhaus,
We appreciate your inquiry regarding our Sony receiver. We apologize for the inconvenience. We want to make sure you're completely satisfied with your product.
The behavior observed with the STR-AN1000, where it does not remember the last used input and instead defaults to the TV input upon startup, is considered normal operation. This is because the receiver is designed to prioritize the TV input when it is turned on, to ensure that it is ready for use.
About the issue related with the sound, here are a few steps you can follow to troubleshoot the problem: Disconnect the power cord from the STR-AN1000 and leave it unplugged for about 2 minutes. Then, reconnect the power cord and turn the unit on. Verify that your STR-AN1000 has the latest firmware update. You can check this link: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/audio-components-receivers-amplifiers/str-an1000/software/00290762 Also, you can navigate to 'Setup' - 'Speaker Settings' - 'Manual Speaker Settings' and perform a 'Test Tone' to check if the speakers are working correctly. Ensure the speaker output settings are correctly configured: Access your TV's sound settings and set it to output sound through the STR-AN1000 (Audio system). If the above steps don't resolve the issue, perform a factory reset. To do this, turn off the receiver, press and hold the power button for more than 10 seconds until you see the reset process start. This will return the settings to their initial status.
If the problem persists after trying these steps, we recommend reaching out to our product support team via phone call at 239-245-6366 or chat through this link: https://us.esupport.sony.com/support/s/support-contact?language=en_US Hours of Operation: Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 9:00 pm ET Saturday - Sunday 10:00 am - 8:00 pm ET.

Love this thing. Sony AVRs are very easy to setup, and tuning of the speakers to be optimized via the provided microphone, that simply plugs in the front, runs an audio test for all speakers, tuning for nearly perfect acoustics. Power is plentiful, bluetooth works flawlessly. Bought this for $475 open box 1 year ago, couldn't be happier, still!

First receiver I’ve bought. Massive step up from previous hand me downs. The sound quality is great as you’d expect when paired with quality speakers. The Bluetooth interface and pairing is very intuitive. I did have one issue with a hard freeze when watching a movie through Paramount. Not sure if it got too warm in the cabinet or the issue was unrelated to the receiver. Removing power for a minute or two fixed it. No issues since. Great long term investment

Hi AJCR,
Thanks for sharing your experience with the Sony STR-AN1000 AV Receiver! It’s awesome to hear that your first receiver purchase has been such a significant upgrade, especially with the sound quality when paired with great speakers. We’re glad you found the Bluetooth interface intuitive as well. Regarding the freeze issue, it’s good to know a quick power reset resolved it and that you haven’t had any problems since, it could have been a one-off glitch or related to heat, as you mentioned. To make sure heat is radiated efficiently, check this helpful link:

Hi Trapezoid,
We are pleased to hear that you are enjoying the picture and sound quality of your STR-AN1000, as well as the generous number of HDMI inputs! We understand that the lack of a physical A/B toggle on the front panel is a change from traditional receivers; however, you can still control speakers in other rooms by using the Zone 2 or Zone 3 features. By connecting your secondary speakers to the SURROUND BACK/HEIGHT terminals and configuring them as "Zone 3" or "Front B" in the Speaker Settings menu, you can toggle them on or off and even play different music in each room using the remote or the Sony | Music Center app.
