Huge fan! Incredibly capable unit that gives a serious bang for the buck. When people have come over to hear my 5.1 sound system they think I’ve spent a lot more money than I have. This Sony unit is very intuitive. I have 2 arc’s set up to switch back and forth between a 60” TV and a projector... and that all runs to an Apple TV, Xbox and Nintendo switch. I. Rarely need to use the remote to the unit, because it intuitively switches to each unit based on them being powered on. It auto connects to Bluetooth once initially connected as well.

Never hooked up my surround sound in my ceiling , decided to when I got a new TV, had best Buy install, can't go back to old TV speakers after this. I'm glad it does the job. Not expensive and well worth it. Good for true surround sound.

The Sony STR-DH590 is part of Sony’s new 2018 lineup and supports the newest audio and video standards such as Bluetooth audio streaming, Audio Return Channel (ARC), 3D over HDMI, HDMI 2.0b, HDCP 2.2, HDR (HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision™ Compatible), along with 4K 60P 4:4:4 support. All 4 HDMI inputs support HDMI 2.0b (which added support for HLG) and HDCP 2.2. Setup was very easy. It only took a few minutes for me remove my old receiver (Sony STR-DG720) and hook everything up to the new one. When you first turn it on, you are presented with a GUI menu on your TV screen where you can then perform an easy audio calibration by plugging in the included microphone and placing it where you would normally sit. Then the receiver goes through a quick process by playing sounds through your speakers and adjusting the output. After a minute or two, your speakers are calibrated and the resultant sound is amazing! I was always very happy with the sound from my old STR-DG720 and did not expect much improvement from the new STR-DH590 but I was pleasantly surprised by the improvement in sound quality I experienced. As with the STR-DG720, the new STR-DH590 produced vocals that were very clear and easily understandable. But everything sounded crisper and more detailed. Maybe I’m imagining things, but the position of sounds seemed more precise with sounds coming all around me. It seemed like I was hearing things that I did not hear before. I currently have a 4.1 speaker setup and the new receiver seemed to have brought new life to my old speakers. The STR-DH590 also supports S-Force PRO Front Surround which is a technology that produces virtual surround sound using only 2 physical front speakers. I did not try this since I have 5 physical speakers in my setup. With the new Sony STR-DH590, I am able to get full surround sound from all my media devices and game systems (Panasonic BD player, Apple TV, Fire TV, nVidia Shield TV, Roku Ultra, PS3, Wii U, and Xbox One S) while using NetFlix, Amazon Prime Video, and Vudu. I did encounter a problem with my Xbox One S however. When I tried to use Amazon Prime Video with my Xbox One S, it displayed a blank screen with a message about not being able to display the content. I suspected a HDCP handshaking issue. My Xbox One S was connected to the STR-DH590 using an older external 1080p HDMI switch. I replaced the switch with a new Rocketfish RF-G1501 4K HDMI switch and new Rocketfish 4K HDMI cables and the problem went away. My other game systems (PS3 and Wii U) also work great with the new receiver. I still only have a 1080p HDTV so I wasn’t able to judge it based on its 4K video capabilities but the STR-DH590 has all the 4K features that I would want when I do upgrade my HDTV. There are some usability issues that could be improved upon. The on screen GUI menu feels incomplete because it cannot be used to adjust all the settings of the Sony STR-DH590. There are some settings that can only be adjusted using the display panel menu. In this day and age, I think the on screen GUI menu should be able to adjust every setting that is available on the display panel menu. The display panel menu also has a dated feel (it’s very similar to the display panel menu on my old STR-DG720 receiver). There is also a disconnected feeling between the two menu systems. With the panel display menu, you can rename inputs. So, if I have my Roku Ultra connected to the receiver’s SAT/CATV HDMI input, I can use the display panel menu to rename it as “Roku”. After doing this, when I switch the input by pressing the SAT/CATV button on my remote, the display panel will display “Roku”. But if I want to use the on screen GUI menu to switch inputs, the input is still displayed as “SAT/CATV” instead of “Roku” on the GUI. Also, the new STR-DH590 has the same limitation as my old STR-DG720 where you can only use the optical audio input when using the TV as the source. My HDTV does not support ARC and only has a coax digital output so I had to use a “coax to optical converter” to connect my HDTV to the new Sony STR-DH590. It would have been nice to have a choice of using either the coax audio input or the optical audio input when using the TV as the source. If it were possible to reassign the coax audio input to the TV source then I wouldn’t need a “coax to optical converter” and things would be a little less cluttered with my home theater setup. Based on ease of setup, sound quality, compatibility with all my media and gaming devices, and support of the most recent video and audio standards, I would give the new STR-DH590 5 stars. I only wished the on screen GUI was a bit more full feature.

I bought this as a replacement for my 70's 5.2 channel receiver and it has worked perfectly, it has alot of tweakable settings so you get the perfect sound for your set-up. It is a bit pricey but to be honest its worth it as it is affordable(and a Sony) and perfect for a standard home theater set-up .

Sony 5.2 Channel Bluetooth Wireless Surround Sound Home Theater I’ve always trusted Sony products, but this multi-channel Bluetooth system has been a huge letdown—not just once, but three times. We purchased three units of this system over the past year. Two were used in different rooms and locations, both paired with compatible speakers and properly ventilated, following all recommended setup instructions. Despite that, all three units failed prematurely. • One stopped powering on entirely after just a few weeks. • Another lasted a few months before dying with no explanation. • The third gave off a strong electrical smell and appeared to overheat, even with a fan running near it for ventilation. The odor was so concerning that we took safety precautions and discontinued use immediately. Every unit was wired correctly and placed in an open space, and still—these issues happened. What’s most frustrating is that trying to resolve the problem has been incredibly difficult. Attempts to work with customer service led to back-and-forths with no clear support or resolution. It was especially disappointing not to be helped when we tried to escalate the issue. We really wanted to like this product and hoped it would work as expected. But after three failures in two different setups, we can’t recommend it. It looks nice, but the reliability and support simply don’t match the brand’s usual standard.

Exact ly what I needed and wanted. Great for folks not having a home theater and the Geek Squad person was terrific and so helpful.

Purchased this to power five large speakers and a subwoofer. Pushes everything very nicely without any sort of distortion. Bluetooth feature is really nice as I can be in my kitchen and click on connect from the Bluetooth setting on my phone and it will turn on the receiver. Really easy to use auto calibration as well. Had to make slight changes but was pretty spot on for the distance of the speakers.
