First I want to say that I have owned this thing for going on two months and have used it for 100+ hours of play time. This is an excellent product, but it freezes too frequently. If you want a cheaper high-end 4k Blu-Ray player and do not mind having to turn off the system frequently to fix freezing issues, this is the player for you. By frequently I mean it can occur multiple times in the span of watching a single DVD or Blu Ray disc. Pro's: Excellent quality graphics, the display is beautiful when connected to a 4k TV. The set up is so easy a child can do it without help. The interface working with applications such as netflix is super easy to control. Con's: There is no LCD display of running time or anything, The entire face of the unit except 3 inches to the left corner when opening the DVD tray to watch a movie. This thing freezes frequently, too frequently for the money spent. Turn it off when it responds then turn it back on and you cannot start the Blu Ray or DVD where you left off, you must fast forward and hope you remember where it froze. Without an LCD display to say when your system froze, you have to hope you were paying attention to the movie otherwise your kids may be upset that spongebob stopped moving and you won't know were to start it from again.

    Have to unplug it frequently

Very well made, excellent picture and sound. I have my portable hard drive connected to the USB port and it plays my movies perfectly. However, the player has become unresponsive several times. Never during playback, only when the unit has been turned off and won't turn back on. I eventually plugged it into a power strip so I can easily turn it off and back on.

We bought this to upgrade so we could watch Netflix & 3D movies. Was easy to setup. That being said, the player freezes from time to time. When that happens you have to unplug it to get it to reset. When we bought it the young man at Best Buy gave it a good review. Not thinking he’s read any of the reviews because about a third of the ones I read have the same problem that we’ve had with this one. I should’ve done more research before I bought it. Because I wouldn’t have bought it. I check for updates every couple of weeks to see if there’s a fix. I should’ve taken it back.

Bought this standalone 4K player hoping to have it take over my existing media player, an XBOX One X. While playing 4K movies the picture quality does slightly edge out the xbox but I found the picture too dark in some scenes, changing the picture mode didn't do much to help. Where this absolutely fails is being a media player. The Netflix app on this vs the xbox is night and day. I tried watching an old standard HD TV show and the picture quality was grainy. I expected decent upscaling. Even streaming HD movies was not that good in comparison. Ended up returning it. If I were only playing 4K discs I may of kept it, but it was just not worth it for me.

The Sony player provided excellent 4K and upscaling of Standard Blu Ray discs. Connectivity with WIFI was also very good, and the Netflix streaming was very sharp. HDR also performed well. HOWEVER, great picture performance was offset by a number of bugs which I can only assume relate to the firmware. On non-Blu Ray discs, the player would skip at various points. [Tested the discs against a Sony S6500, and no problems.] The player also froze up several times, requiring that the unit be unplugged then plugged in to unfreeze. The Unit also lost connection once to the TV. [A Samsung JS 8500.] I also noticed that if a disc was stopped mid play, resuming the play started the disc from the beginning. I checked for Firmware updates via the internet function and the unit indicated firmware was up to date. So while the unit performs quite well when it is working properly, the above mentioned issues [ skipping, freezes, connectivity to TV] significantly bring the rating down. I would have thought Sony would have solved these Firmware issues with updates by now, however, where issues with this unit arise, they seem to revolve around the skipping and freezes. Disappointing, as I have Sony Blu rays in the S5500 &S6500 models, and both have performed without a hitch. Returned the Unit without a problem .

The first thing I need to mention is there is no display on the face of this player. I like to see the timer especially in instances where a disc is skipping... I use this player for Netflix and I continually have issues where it just stops playing. I contacted customer service and they are fairly useless. There is also no support for Dolby Vision.

This is a nice looking well built player but i was not able to use it bec of those hdcp limitations. I hooked it to my bose soundtouch 300 with hdcp cable and yes no picture no sound the player won’t even turn off/ on anymore. I dont blame this player, it’s my old tv bec uts not UHD and its hooked to the bose soundtouch 300 with a non hdcp cable , so everything must be new to enjoy this 4k dolby etc features.

    Not Happy with SONY Today

I would like to start be saying I have always thought of SONY as a quality product and company but everything I have purchased in the past has always worked as described out the box. I went to best buy to purchase the item and none were on the shelf so one was mailed to me. Best Buy had it to me in 3 days that was great! When I finally got the opportunity to take it out of the box and set it up it seemed to work ok but said a software update was needed. This is were all the Joy stopped! I started the update and it gave me an error message. Tried a few more times with no luck so I finally broke down and called Sony support after 1.5 hours of wasted time with Sony support it was determined that it would not update, and I should send it back. Then a new one would be mailed out to me. After I mailed back the defective unit I should of known better and just returned it to best buy. Instead I mailed it back to Sony. I was told they would replace but now I get an email that it is a return only and when I try to call the support dept they tell me their system is down and to call back later. This has happened twice now. Buyer beware in my option SONY has not worked out all the bugs with this product yet but decided to push it to market because Samsung and Phillips both had 4k dvd players in the market.

This 4k player would freeze during play. Apps do not respond sometimes. If you don't use if for a few days, it wouldn't even power up when you press the remote. Had to unplug it from the outlet and plug it back in to fix the problems. I think I may need to bring it back even though the return period has passed.

No need to discuss the pros of this bluray player because the major con cancels them all out. As mentioned in most of all the low ranking reviews for this unit this player freezes or randomly restarts. Put your money towards a better player and avoid this one altogether!

I tried two X800s and returned both. Although the X800 worked well playing Blu Ray and 4K ultra HD discs the audio cut in and out multiple times every minutes when playing DVDs. Called Sony, performed many procedures to diagnose the problem and they determined the unit was defective. I returned it and Best Buy replaced it without any problem (great service). The second unit worked better with DVDs but the audio still cut in and out every few minutes. I returned it to Best Buy and again they were wonderful. I exchanged it for a Samsung 4K Ultra HD player and it is fabulous. Not only was it a few dollars less expensive, it plays all disc formats flawlessly. I doubt that I’ll try Sony again.

After all the great reviews, I was all set to really love this unit. But when I got it, I discovered there is no illuminated front display. Turns out, this is important! This means you don’t know what movie chapter you are on or how many minutes in, unless you bring it up on the tv screen itself. This is even more impractical if you are using the unit as a CD player, and you need to know what track you’re on. The only way to know is to turn on the tv! This is maddening. Never seen anything like it. It’s like a car without a speedometer or a gas gauge. Buyers beware. I’m returning this for something more user friendly.

This 4K player has excellent picture and sound quality. However, it's buggy (freezes occasionally) and the interface looks like it was designed in 1995 - just terrible. Add to that, there is a fixed set of video apps on the machine and the app list has only been update once since we bought it. For the price, I expected something much more stable with new video apps added from time to time. You might as well buy a PlayStation instead.

I like how slim and unintrusive this DVD player looks, and it plays UHD discs nicely. However, the user interface is a bit complicated, and there are times when I have a DVD in the tray but the player doesn't play it. i need to turn it off and on again so it recognizes something is there. I've also experienced some skipping on older DVDs even though it appears that the DVD is perfectly fine without any scratches.

DVD and regular blu-rays play with no issues. 4K, specially HDR movies, will freeze and skip sections every 5-15 minutes. Happens with multiple discs and on multiple TVs, even after a firmware update. Did a quick search and it seems this model is known for having similar problems. Now I understand why it’s so heavily discounted. Will be returning in the next day or two, once I have a chance.

The audio features drew me to this Sony. I still play CDs, SACDs and DVD-As. Performed great until one day it would not power up anymore. Glad I got a Geek Squad plan. The player was not fixable so I was refunded the price I paid for the unit. Too bad, I really enjoyed the unit until the end. The features are equivalent to the ES 1100. The MK II is scaled back in features compared to the original 800.

I don't know if I got a broken product or not but the player freezes and turns off on it's own. I have tried new discs and older Blu-ray discs and it does it either way. It doesn't always do it but it does it enough to be a problem. It is connected to the Internet so it is aways being updated but still has the problem. However the video quality is awsome weather it glitches or not. If it wouldn't be for that problem it would be a great player.
