It works perfect with my Sony Z9D UHD 3D TV along with my Marantz SR7013 Receiver. I purchased this so I could utilize the Dolby Vision Capabilities of my TV. I wasn’t disappointed. It plays my Dolby Vision UHD BluRays perfectly and the picture is amazing. I was finally able to not only utilize Dolby Vision but also Dolby Atmos at the same time. Overall I’m very pleased with my purchase.
There are two small things to note. Watching a movie with Dolby Vision requires the user to go into Setup and turn it on. Then in my case I have a 3D TV. You need to go back in to Setup and turn it back off to use your 3D. The other thing to note is the lack of supported Apps. You get NETFLIX, Prime Video and YouTube. That’s it! My other older Sony BluRay has more such as Slacker and Pandora. That’s why this wasn’t a deal breaker for me.

SONY 4K player better than the Xbox Series X,X900H

Ive been using the Sony Boss Sauce 4K player for few months now and i can say it is the greatest 4K disk player on the market. I have compared it to the Xbox Series X (yea SONY BETTER) and the Xbox one X. Also i have a Sony X900H 65 inch 2020 tv connected with AudioQuest VODKA and CARBON HDMI cables, spare no expense thats all worth it. MARVEL MARVEL MARVEL, when Dr. Strange multiplies and then uses some sort of lava colored rope to grab their Thanos, OMG the screen comes to life. AND the UPSCALING let me talk to you about the Upscaling, its amazing on almost any blu-ray disc and on DVDs it's sort of helps I do like some old TV shows such as wings . But the real reason is the 4K contact and the next reason is you get better sound from this 4K player than you do from a cheaper 4K player the same can be said about the television itself using the E arc hdmi plug in spot.

Ok this is my 1st 4K player to own. I do have 2 4k tv's both have a blue-ray player hooked up to them. Sony has made a great 4k player the picture is crystal clear. I saw Jumanji in the theater and on my blue-ray player at home and have to say the 5k player had a much better picture quality then both. With the player it has Amazon Prime, Netflix and YouTube apps already on it. This does have bluetooth ability it will connect to your WiFi for all updates. Now it will recommend you get a 4K HDMI Cable to use for better picture.
I will enjoy this new 4k player quality of picture is truly amazing. A must have if you have a 4K TV.

It's expensive, yes. There are cheaper options, but for me, it was completely worth it. It will get the best out of your 4k blu ray collection and it does it all automatically. I've been using the X Box One S as my 4k blu ray player and I've had constant problems with playing discs, getting Dolby Atmos, and Dolby Vision. I've spent too many hours going through the settings in the X box to try to get things working properly. As soon as this player from Sony became available, I jumped on it. I left all the settings to auto and to my surprise, everything works. I'm getting Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision and I couldn't be happier. It would be nice if it supported more streaming apps, right now it's just Netflix, Youtube, and Amazon Prime Video, but I bought for 4k disc playback and it's flawless.

I was under the impression this player didn’t have Dolby Vision because a earlier player that looked the same didnt. Low and behold i was surprised when I saw the Dolby Vision logo on the box. This is rugged player with a chassis thats built to absorb vibration. No plastic on this player. Picture quality is excellent sound includes Dolby Atmos and DTS X plus any other audio format of the past. My one complaint. Is you have to go into the settings to turn on Dolby Vision or off. Most players do that automatically. Other then that. This player is highly recommended.

This blue-ray player is an economical upgrade from the basic Samsung Blue-Ray player vs. units going for several $100s more. Overall picture quality is better with Blue-Ray discs and non Blue-Ray as well. It only has two HDMI ports which can be limiting for more advanced users. Remote control is very basic. Requires a scrolling action to change input sources vs direct access. Also, Sony does not work and play well with many of the alternative streaming services. Therefore, it will only allow streaming from Netflix, YouTube and Amazon. You cannot get Hulu, Vudu, etc. Which I find disappointing. If you have purchased media on Vudu or Hulu, you better have a smart TV to access them.

There are better players available. If you're lucky enough to find an Oppo for a reasonable price, or willing to pay a premium for the Panasonic 4k players, but this Sony is by far the best value on the Market. Does everything I need-- Atmos, Dolby Vision, 4k, etc-- and doesn't break the bank. This is a nice next gen player combining the strenghths of the old x700 and x800 players. It's never glitched out on me like the 700 is prone to do, which I really appreciate.

Excellent Unit Except for Upscaling
|

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
This is currently Sony's "top of the line" 4K UHD Blu-ray player and in all aspects, save one, it is an excellent player. Simple to set up and operate, this unit provides excellent audio & video playback on a 4K capable monitor.
That said...
This Sony player seems to have difficulty with upscaling standard DVD video to HD.
Playing a standard DVD (Solaris) the video image was outstanding. Indeed, this disc has never looked better. And then, for no apparent reason, the player froze.
In doing some research on-line we discovered that others have encountered this same issue. The upscaling overtaxes the player causing it to freeze. The solution -- turn off the upscaling capability. This can be accomplished in the system set-up menu. Once the upscaling was disabled the unit worked perfectly, and has continued to do so.
Again, I am happy that I purchased this unit and am satisfied with its performance in all other aspects.

First and foremost, I am very pleased with my purchase.
It was everything and more. I want to thank all the reviews that were posted by all the buyers of this product. Although I was already hyped for this purchase, the reviews I read put over the top. And, the product was everything and more.
It was easy to install and set up and practically made my 4k TV come to life.
The only thing negative I have to say about this product is the inability to "add" apps to the main menu. I enjoy the freedom to add other movie apps, i.e. Netflix, Hulu, etc.
I'm not sure the reason but I am sure there is and probably has to do with licensing or marketing schemes.
Any thoughts to this? Am I overlooking something? Is there an update I don't know about?
For this reason, I gave my product 4 stars.

For technology that hasn't changed for years, this 4K blu-ray played ha been able to play all the 4K Blurays flawlessly. The little "extra heft" helps make it feel like a more stable and quality product (unlike those other lightweight ones primarily made of plastic). The only dislike of this one is that there's no front information display.

Excellent 4K Blu Ray/SACD player

My old Oppo Blu Ray/SACD player finally bit the dust and I needed a replacement and this Sony UBP-X800M2 player fit the bill nicely. 4K Blu Rays look and sound great and SACDs sound just as awesome as they did with the Oppo. Plus it's a nice graphics upgrade since the Oppo only supported 1080P.
The UI is a little clunky and you have to switch Dolby Vision on and off manually as needed because it doesn't do it for you automatically, which is a minor annoyance. And speaking of minor annoyances, if you have a disk in the drive, every time you turn the player on, it takes a few seconds to recognize and initialize the disk before it will allow you to play it. Even if it's the same disk that was in there the last time you used it.
But those annoyances aside, I can easily give this a five-star rating as the picture and sound quality are stellar for this price.

Hello Wayne,
Thank you for your detailed review of the Sony UBP-X800M2 player. We're glad to hear that you found the picture and sound quality to be outstanding and that the player has met your needs overall, especially with 4K Blu Ray and SACD performance.
We appreciate your feedback regarding the user interface and the manual switching for Dolby Vision. We understand that having to convert between these settings manually can be an inconvenience. Additionally, your point about the initialization time when a disc is in the drive is noted. Your experience helps us identify areas for future improvements.
Your review is valuable, and we're happy to know that the overall experience with the product earns a five-star rating from you despite the minor annoyances. Thank you for choosing Sony and for taking the time to share your feedback.

Sturdy 4k player. One of the most affordable. That said, you may be getting what you pay for. No display to show elapsed time, etc. It comes installed with 3 apps. Netflix, Amazon Video, and YouTube. No way to install other apps (Hulu, Disney+,etc.) or delete those. Bluetooth availability is a GREAT feature. I can pair with bluetooth headphones and watch on my big screen without bothering the family or neighbors. :)
The good... Quality picture, bluetooth. Dolby Vision, HDR, Dolby Atmos playback (as long as your disc supports those) and wifi connectivity.
The bad... No display, (the only way you know it's on is a VERY SMALL green LED.)
The worst... VERY GLITCHY. I've had to restart the player more than a dozen times because it jams, freezes. Sometimes I can "soft" reset it by just powering off and back on, but often I have to "hard" reset it by unplugging it, wait, plug it back in, restart the movie. The last time this happened, that hard reset didn't work. Finally worked the second time I "hard" reset it. Frustrating. That's when I decided to write this review. If this happened rarely, I'd let it go, and live with it. But this issue seems to be getting more common. I DON'T RECOMMEND BUYING THIS.

I love this player! I have a Playstation 5, but sometimes it can get very warm or be a little loud. Also the PS5 does not produce Dolby Vision. So I went with this X800M2.
This player runs great and is very quiet. Nice design and great build quality. Player supports HDR10, Dolby Vision, and 3D Blu Ray Discs.
For audio it supports Dolby Amos and DTS:X. Sounds great.
Includes 3 Smart Apps: Netflix, Youtube, and Amazon
I normally just use the Smart Apps on my 4K TV, but I tested these out on the player and seemed to work just fine.
I went over many reviews before purchasing this player, and read many great things and a couple of negative things.
The negative always seems to come to two things 1. Having to manually switch Dolby Vision on/off in the settings. 2. People having issues with movies freezing.
Over the month I have watched many of my 4K UHD BluRays and have had no issues with freezing. And I have no issues with having to turn Dolby Vision on/off before watching films. It only takes 5 seconds to get into setting and do it, so not a big deal to me.
So far I'm enjoying everything about this player. I have watched 4K BluRays, 3D BluRays, BluRays, and DVD's. Everything has worked great. Highly recommend this player!

Looked at multiple 4K UHD players but this was the best bang for the buck available. It’s fast, heavy, good built quality and supports all formats out there. I do wish this had a display which is my only gripe.
I looked at the next step up from Sony but couldn’t justify the price for having a 7 channel pre-output which in this day and age, no one really uses. Other than that, everything is identical between 800XM2 and 1000ES model.

I have been very excited about 4K Ever since my mom bought a fancy new TV. I have had great experience with a Sony Blue Ray Player that still works very well for almost 10 years now. I've also had some experience with Samsung, LG, Panasonic, and Vizio, Philips and XBox DVD and/or Blu-Ray Players. So I'm very much knowledgeable in what is important in everyday matters with this topic. The Good news is this 4K Player is (1) Great Build Quality (2) Picture is Beautiful (I Can notice The 4K Novelty as well as an improvement with non 4K Blu-Ray Discs though not so much with Older DVDs and (3) Sound Quality-Awesome.
Set up on this is very easy. If you're someone that has always had others help with set up I suggest things stay that way though. This 4K Player's only downside is ironically a very interesting paradigm. On one hand there are light weight little Disc players that are so compact they're convenient in a crowded home entertainment center. Not this one! it is by far Thee closest competitor to the mammoth models Samsung keeps dishing out, the 800-M2's depth from the wall to the front is 2x what I've ever seen. Usually the manufacturer goes either deep and slim or vise versa, this model does both. To its credit the paradigm-the build qulity is exceptional! This is important because one of the ways physical discs get better over the years is the amount of data that can be stored on them, with this 4K player i've noticed a cpu transfer rate of 70+ megabytes per second! That was my 1st big wow when I watched my 1st 4K movie at Home. A regular Blu-Ray player is around 7 megabytes per second. So the Disc is either rotating 10x faster or the Laser is 10x stronger or it's both more or less, either way This Sony 800-M2 player appears to have been built to last under such heavy lifting required for running Ultra High Res Video and Audio.
Most popular apps are advertised on the box however I don't have experience with apps on this player.
If you are reading this remember to make a task of finding out if your tv supports something called DolbyVision or HDR10+ before deciding on the right model for you. My TV is HDR10+ But I reluctantly decided to stick with Sony, I like Sony. Thanks, I wish you the best and thank you again for your time and care reading my review of the Sony 800-M2 Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Player.

Buy only if you need SACD and DVD-Audio support

I bought this player because my Panasonic DP-UB820 does not support either SACD and DVD-Audio disks. (Years ago, I had an Oppo Blu-ray player that supported these formats, but the Oppo players were discontinued.)
The picture quality of the Sony is excellent for 4K UHD disks (assuming it doesn't freeze up), but the picture quality isn't great for standard Blu-rays or DVDs; the Panasonic is much better in terms of picture quality,
More concerning is that the Sony will sometimes freeze up on certain disks. This happened with the 4K edition of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. It played fine on the Panasonic.
A big issue for me is that the Sony player doesn't have any sort of display so you can't see how much time has elapsed on a disk, what track of a CD you are on, etc. There is a Display button on the remote to show this information when playing a video disk, but it is annoying because the information blocks a significant portion of the screen. If you want to play a CD, you pretty much have to keep the TV turned on.
The Sony does a good job of playing SACDs and DVD-Audio disks. I have the player plugged into an external DAC via the coaxial digital output. If you don't have any SACDs or DVD-Audio disks, I would definitely recommend a Panasonic model instead.
