    Sony's Goldilocks Headphones

The Sony WH-CH700N is the company’s mid-tier offering of over-the-ear consumer headphones that delivers respectable active noise cancellation and very good audio quality. It’s neither the best nor the worst in the Sony headphone line up, it’s what I call the Goldilocks for Sony...it falls somewhere in the middle, but a good and healthy middle in the Sony headphone line up which will appeal to most of the listening audience. These headphones won't excel in any category. It offers many features of the more expensive Sony headphones, but at a lower price point that's not too expensive, but also not priced too low to feel cheap in quality. However, if you are a more budget conscious consumer who desires non-showy, comfortable headphones with active noise cancellation and good audio quality for a wide range of musical genres, but unwilling to go all out for the Sony WH-1000XM2, then you will not be disappointed with the Sony CH700N. Here’s what I liked and disliked about these headphones. Likes: 1. Comfort. The headphones are comfortable and lightweight with soft oval ear cups. I wear glasses and had no ear fatigue at all from wearing the headphones for hours. The headband adjustments are easy to make and should fit most head sizes. These are not designed for the gym and I would not recommend these for working out because the over-the-ear ear cups will quickly build up heat and will slide off with sweat. There are plenty of other choices in headphones to consider for active use. 2. Sound Quality. The headphones actually sound very good. The bass is tight and comes in strong when it needs to without needlessly dragging down the mids and trebles. If you ever listened to the Sony Extra Bass line up, then you will know what I mean. The bass in those headphones muddies up the rest of the audio spectrum. The CH700N achieves a strikingly well balance mix in the audio spectrum. Mids and Highs come through crisp, clear, and clean. It just sounds right. The headphones achieve the best sound quality when powered on and connected with the 3.5mm audio cable. There is greater dynamic separation between vocals and instruments for a livelier and fuller, more enveloping sound. In wireless bluetooth mode you'll lose some audio quality, but it'll still sound very good. The worst quality is with the headphones powered off and connected with the 3.5 mm audio cable. In wired mode with the headphones powerd off, vocals sound recessed and the the audio just sounds flat, with none of that dynamic separation. 3. Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). ANC is automatically activated each time the headphones are powered on. Noise cancellation works well. Turning it on eliminated the lower frequency, uniform sounds from machinery such as office air conditioners and fans. Although I did not have any air travel plans during my testing period, it should be effective at reducing the sound of air cabin engine noise. Keep your expectations real, however. It won't eliminate higher frequencies such as voices. You'll have to turn up the volume to drown out the rest of the noise. The ANC on the Sony CH700N works in both wireless and wired mode. The operation is very basic with the on/off button. Simply press the button on the headphones to turn on and off the noise cancellation feature. It does not have all the bells and whistles for modifying the depth of noise cancellation like the venerable WH-1000XM2, but this should not be expected at this price point. Moreover, as effective as the ANC is on the CH700N, it takes a sizeable back seat to the superior ANC found on the WH-1000XM2. 4. Battery Life. Battery life seems to keep improving with wireless headphones. The Sony CH700N claims a battery life up to 35 hrs in wireless mode with ANC on, and 50 hours powered on in wired mode with ANC on. I believe it. I've had these headphones in wireless mode for over 30 hours now, and I'm still on the first battery charge. 5. Sony Headphones Connect App. The Sony Headphones Connect app is useful and I recommend you download it. It allows you to change the sound to pre-adjusted equalizers or to customize the sound altogether with a five band equalizer and separate bass control. The app also allows you to toggle on and off the ANC and provides an estimate of the remaining battery life. 6. Hands free phone function. The hands free phone function also works well. No complaints from the callers on the other end. They said my voice came through clearly. Dislikes: 1. The headphones do not fold for compact storage, making it more cumbersome to transport. The ear cups simply swivel, but don't fold. It'll take up more space in your bag. 2. Sony did not include a storage case. What a bummer. 3. Long battery recharge time. Sony indicates it'll take up to 7 hours to charge a fully discharged battery. That's an awful long time. However, you'll be able to get up to 60 minutes of audio play simply with a 10 minute quick charge. Summary: Would I recommend the Sony WH-CH700N? Yes I do (and Goldilocks would, too). If you don't want to spring for the absolute best in ANC and high quality audio offered by the Sony WH-1000XM2, the Sony WH-CH700N definitely makes sense as the next best option.

    Noise Canceling Works TOO Well

Noise Canceling headphones in general are great for when you're studying in a library or have a desk job that requires little to no interaction with your peers. When commuting on public transportation, I prefer that noise isn't completely canceled, and unfortunately this does nearly a perfect job at doing just that. Although lacking more Noise Canceling features than one would expect based on the price, these get the job done and truly immerse you into audio pleasure. They're really comfortable to wear, the battery lasts long, and it's great that they're wireless. The built in microphone is a nice extra touch, and I like when the earcups fully enclose your ears (which this does for the most part) as it keeps you warm in the early cold mornings of a work commute and keep you warm while listening to nice crisp audio content!

Stellar Performance & Bass; Needs More NC Options

Disclaimer: I love Sony audio gear. From my first Walkman in the 80's, to my stereo components in the 90's, to a ton of different pieces in the 21st century, I have never been let down by Sony. My favorite headphones of all time are the latest WH-1000XM2 (and I have owned some pretty expensive audiophile gear with price tags 2-3 times the price of those headphones). They are the top of the heap when it comes to noise cancelling, tight sound, and comfort. I use them predominantly at work because my environment there is ridiculously distracting but even if I don't have music on, it gives me an oasis of quiet. I wanted another pair of NC headphones for traveling but didn't want to worry about banging them around in my carry on or buy a second pair of the M2s even though they are a reasonable price as well. I haven't yet had the chance to wear the 700Ns on a plane so I can't speak to the noise cancelling ability of these cans in that environment (sorry next business trip isn't for another month). I can speak to how they do in a relatively noisy public space and home. I can also speak to their audio quality. Let's start with the audio because it is the easiest. These things rock! The sound quality is superb across the spectrum with nice highs (that don't get shrill or sibilant), good mids for vocals, and a tight bass end with some serious oomph. The great thing is that if you download the Sony Headphones Connect app (and I highly recommend you do so), you can tweak the settings/equalizer to your liking but I thought they were great out of the box. Running it through my test playlist that I have used since I was buying $1000+ headphones, show the Sony 700Ns to be a solid piece of audio hardware. Now to noise cancelling. The noise cancelling on the 700Ns is very good but not the top of the line level that you get with the Sony 1000XM2. I don't think it is that they couldn't be as good but there are two things holding it back: the ear cushions and the available NC settings. The ear cushions are great, as is the headband (I have no cushion of hair on the top of my head so I am always appreciative of a nice headband) but the material in the earpads is not as dense as that in the 1000XM2 and so it misses out on some of the passive noise cancelling there. The settings for the Active Noise Cancelling are On, Artificial Intelligence Noise Cancellation (AINC), and off. Switching between on and off is a simple 2 second press of the ANC button. To start up the AINC you have to hold down the button for a few more seconds. The AINC is supposed to take care of selecting the right amount of NC for the setting it detects with its microphones. The higher end Sonys have a similar setting but there are also a TON of other options in the app that really let you dial in the perfect amount of noise cancelling (to the point that you can wear them with no music on and have a VERY quiet environment), you can not do that with these. In both the On and AINC, it seems to be pulling voices a little too much, which is fine and good if you want to be able to still hear people ask you something or to just be aware of what's going on around you. If your GOAL is to shut people out (as it is mine), the 700Ns don't do it. They will actually pick out voices and amplify them to ensure you hear them. My wife thinks that this is the way they all should work, but I respectfully disagree. I did sit outside of a rather busy outlet mall next to a major interstate to see how they would handle the drone of the cars going by. Here the 700Ns did a very good job of blocking the drone of engines and tires so I'm sure these would do well with the sounds on an airplane or train but again, when people walked by my bench these headphones picked them up a little too much. As for the quality of the headphones for calls, they sound great and my wife said that I sounded clearer than I do when I'm just holding the handset to my face. It is also really easy to invoke Siri (or Google Assistant) with just a long press of the play button on the headphones. I don't really like using Siri so I will not be using that feature much but it works well if you do want that feature. I will make one caveat to this whole review. A lot of what holds these headphones back is firmware/software. There is a strong possibility that Sony could update one or both to give more options through the app or through the controls on the headphones themselves. Speaking of which, the controls are all really easy to use without looking and make a lot of sense (unlike some of the touch controls on some other headphones). If Sony does upgrade the software/firmware, these could easily be 5-star headphones but as it stands right now, I would have to give them 4. If you are looking for that extra star and the solitude that the Sony 1000XM2s provide, I would recommend you drop the extra cash and pick up a pair of those, and I guarantee you will not be disappointed. If you are looking for a pair of noise cancelling headphones with straightforward controls, great sound, and very good noise cancelling, feel free to get these because they are great and will save you a not insignificant amount of money. Plus the 700Ns come in some sweet colors; I love the blue on these. Like I said at the start of this review, Sony has never let me down in the audio department, and while these may not be 5-star NC headphones, they are still what I would expect for their price point. Actually they are better than what I would expect but it is hard standing in the shadow of the 1000XM2s!

I’ve had a relationship with Sony products for more than a few decades and I have a number of pieces of Sony audio gear that I still use and a couple of them are over thirty years old and still going strong (AM/FM portable radio and ST-J75 component FM stereo tuner). That says something about the quality of the construction and the excellence of their designs. The WH-CH700N wireless headphones with active noise canceling carries on that same excellence of design in my opinion. Right now I have ANC headphones from four different manufacturers in the house (three wireless and one wired, and one wireless set that does not have ACN) and the Sony is hands down the winner when it comes to controls, both the design and the tactile feel and operation of the buttons and switches. Sony has spread the controls over both ear cups rather than fitting them onto just one. This helps immensely with the operation of the features. Size and layout of the controls make them easy to use, and the LEDs are easy to see in normal lighting. Sizing of the ear cups are slightly larger when compared to the other over-the-ear phones I have (the Sony is the gray colored cushion in the accompanying photo) and the cushioning makes them comfortable to wear for hours at a time. The ear cups swivel so that the headphones lie flat for packing, but they do not fold in any way. At this price point you don’t get real leather and metal finishes, but the plastics and vinyl used are of a nice quality and feel substantial enough for the price paid. Money isn’t wasted on exorbitant packaging to give a luxury feel to a part of the purchase that most people are going to toss in the trash. Sony put the money saved on mainstream packaging into the product you are actually going to use. There is no carrying case or pouch, but I wonder how many people actually use that accessory. If you really need one, it should be an easy item to source. You do get an 18 inch USB to micro-USB charging cord (yay for non-proprietary connectors) and a 48 inch mini-phone plug to mini-phone plug (one end being 90 degrees) audio cable for using the headphones with a wired connection. This cable uncoils nicely and does not retain the bends in it from being packaged up. There is a smartphone app called Sony Headphones Connect that I used on my iPhone 8, and regardless of the App Store reviews, I found the app to work flawlessly and as intended. It allowed me to custom tailor an equalizer curve that made these headphones sound wonderful to me. There are also preloaded equalizer settings, along with an extra bass boost (called Clear Bass) and with all of the variations on EQ available to a user, anyone should be happy with the sound quality of these headphones. There is also a sound effects mode called Surround VPT that supposedly mimics certain musical venues, but I found that the preprogrammed options had a detrimental effect on the sound quality. I think most people who are music enthusiasts have a few “go-to” songs when evaluating headphones or speakers, and these Sony headphones easily passed all of my personal “tests”. All active noise canceling headphones I have used deal with constant noise (hums, hisses, droning, etc) better than transient noise (short lived, pops, thumps, bangs, etc) because of how this technology works - listening for the noise so that it can create an equal but opposite wave form to cancel the unwanted noise. I work in a noisy environment with average decibel readings between 82 and 88 dB from constant conveyor and capping equipment. There are also transient banging or clacking noises from carriers on the conveyors or air-driven transfer arms that move carriers from one conveyor to another. These Sony headphones work just as well as any of the other brands I have used, including the other four-letter brand that most people associate with active noise canceling. Constant noise is eliminated almost completely and transient noise is dealt with as well as can be expected. One ear cup has a dedicated button to turn the ANC on and off and what I like about this is that the sound quality of the music changes very little if at all and battery life is extended if you don’t need noise canceling. Turning the main power off on the headphone also turns off any equalization you have selected with the Headphones Connect app, but the sound quality is still very good especially when compared to a pair of wired ACN headphones I have that sound terrible when I turn off their power. If you need ACN headphones, I don’t think you can go wrong with the WH-CH700N as your choice. I found nothing about them to dislike which is unusual for me as I almost always find something I don’t like about virtually any product. Fit, finish, adjustability, functionality and the accompanying phone app all are appropriate for this price point. If you desire a more luxurious feel to your headphones, I would definitely look a little higher in Sony’s line-up and wouldn’t be afraid to make a purchase without auditioning them first.

For the 200 dollar price range this is a pretty good product. The controls are alright but I think they could have done a better job. When I go to the gym with these in a location with a lot of interference the connection breaks up a lot.

Overall, very good headphones. But I wish the build quality were better. First pair of active noise cancelling headphones I have had a chance to use, and low and behold, I try it near my home computer that has a very loud fan, and it really worked great, it knocked down the hum of the fan noise significantly. To get the most of these headphones, you need to install the “Sony Headphones Connect” app. I am on android and already have some Sony bluetooth portable speakers, and had the android app for those speakers, called “Music Center”, and while you can tell and connect the headphones via bluetooth that app, the Headphones connect app allows you to turn ANC (active noise cancelling) on or off, and has equalizer settings. Any app you have that is playing music will also show up in this app. While I appreciate the EQ presets in the app, I prefer not using them at all, and using the EQ settings in my music player, “PowerAmp”. I set these up to my phone via bluetooth, but it is way easier to just NFC. Now, I just touch the left earcup with the “N” logo on it to my phone, and it automatically turns on the headphones. I was never that crazy about bluetooth audio for headphones, but was surprised at the quality over bluetooth for music. Whenever possible however, I still prefer to plug in the 3.5mm wired cable to my phone. Still not totally crazy about wireless signals beaming thru my head all day. Battery life seems to be really good on these so far too, even when using them wirelessly. Some cons of these headphones: While I do like the sound quality of these headphones, it has really good bass, much like other sony speakers, maybe too much bass (I like it though), I was quite a bit disappointed with the build quality of the headphones for something at this price point. They just don’t feel like they will last. They are comfortable, but don’t feel as nice on my ears as other over ear headphones that are not at this price point. I have to find some kind of headphone case for these for travelling, I had a headphone case from an old pair of V-Moda LP Crossfades, and while it fits, it puts a bit of pressure on the earcups of these headphones. For now, I am just using the actual box the headphones came in as my travel case when going to work. I wish Sony would include better documentation on the headphones, the printed materials are very generic, and had to go the sony website to get more details on all the features on the headphones. I also wish sony had included it’s own charger for the headphones at this price point. You are supposed to supply your own USB charger. I just use my phone charger. Overall, very good headphones, but again at this price, I wish they didn’t feel a bit on the flimsy side. The sound quality is great though, and so far I am pretty happy overall.

Sony - WH-CH700N Wireless Noise Canceling Over-the-Ear Headphones I’m now flying more than I want to. With all the other flying aggravations, the relentless engine droning adds to the misery. Well, no more. Sony’s recent noise reduction headphones take away the worst of the noise and add a large measure of high quality sound and soothing comfort. DESIGN/CONTROLS: I’m a big fan of this style of over-the ear headphones, and it doesn’t get much better than this for comfort. These are very light, with larger-than-typical ear cups, and soft materials. Do yourself a favor and try these on. The controls are laid out along the rim of the both cups. The right cup has a rocker switch for volume and a slide/push switch for track management and call control. The left cup has the noise on/off switch, power/BT switch, and both the charging and direct wired ports. This is a busier than usual layout. However, the dedicated controls make operations more reliable and easier to find. You will get over the learning curve and it all makes perfect sense. My wife and daughter shy away from this design type because they wear earrings which can interfere with the cups, but the SONY offers so many other advantages. SOUND: I decided to test these WH-CH700N headphones against my more expensive, but otherwise comparable headphones. I was surprised to discover I preferred these Sony headphones most often. They just seemed livelier. They are outrageously comfortable. I spent a considerable amount of time with Lauryn Hill’s ACL TV special, swapping back and forth, with both headphones using Bluetooth, and both with noise reduction. I even tried a selection of wired professional grade headphones to compare. I insist on balance, detailed upper frequencies and solid bass. These Sony WH-CH700Ns are very nice. Voices were all intelligible, cymbals stayed crisp and shimmering, and bottom end bass was so solid you could almost feel it. The energy of the performance was perfectly captured. Noise reduction has no discernible affect on the sound quality, but it is somewhat less effective than some other headphones. It does strip away the irritating drone of engines, and that is what I care about most. FEATURES: These sound so nice, I almost forgot about the App. The WH-CH700N gets its customized version of the SONY headphone App. Want to listen to music as if you are in an arena, club, concert hall, or other venue. There are surround field settings to choose. Do you prefer to contour your sound? The App provides a 5 band equalizer. Have fun. If your having Bluetooth connectivity issues for some reason, you can tell the SONY to prioritize connection over sound quality and it will use a most robust codec. You can turn off noise cancelling from the APP or the headphone button. You can even hardwire to your phone or laptop with the included minijack. COMPLAINTS: My Bluetooth connection sometimes required me to press/release the pause/play button to establish the connection. (Not one of SONY’s recommended procedures, but it worked.) Like most of my BT devices, switching between headphones or sources tossed me into a reconnect ritual. I think it’s just the world of BT. Nothing insurmountable. I like these a lot. These are enjoyable for a number of reasons: super sound quality and long term comfort are right at the top, and noise reduction is pretty reasonable too. I will be recommending these to friends and family. Here’s your seat in First Class

The Sony WH-CH700N sound great, they have very pronounced high frequencies, ok mid frequencies, and just enough bass for most people who aren’t “bass heads”. They are very comfortable for the most part and are even moderately comfortable while wearing glasses. Their lightweight plastic construction feels pretty cheap but but does well in keeping them lightweight. Now for the noise cancelling. The noise cancelling works ok but is far from the best I’ve used. It just kind of muffles everything slightly rather than cancel out much noise. It was just enough while playing the drums to keep from hurting my ears. But overall these are a pretty good option unless you need some heavy noise cancelling.

I have been using the Bose QuietComfort 35 ever since it's released and love the features and sound... So when Sony released the WH-CH700N, that's very comparable to the QC35, I was amped since I am a fan of Sony. When you first open the box you're greeted with a very premium look and feel headphone that's over the ear (which I prefer versus the on ear) since I wear glasses. With today's headphones, a app download is suggested to get the most out of the headphone (Sony Headphone Connect). The app itself offers to change the sound quality to your liking, options includes Surround effect (VPT) modes, Equalizer settings, Digital Noise Cancelling On/Off, DSEE (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) On/Off and Sound Quality Mode which prioritize sound quality or stable connection. So if you're looking for a headphone that can offer a sound quality change... this might be it for you! The overall sound for me is pretty good, while changing the sound to my liking helps alot, I did enjoy the overall sound and feel. Battery life is very excellent as I can use this all week for 3-5 hours a day at roughly 50-60% volume and not have to charge it. Physical buttons makes it easier to use with the available Play/Pause/Next/Previous, Volume control, Digital Noise Cancelling On/Off, AUX jack (cable included to use when battery is N/A) and the Power button. As for the Digital NC, it does a good job of cancelling sound, but not completely. Outside sound won't bother you much while listening to music, but you'll slightly hear the louder noises. It is very comfortable while wearing, even with glasses, for a few hours, light that I even forget that I have it on. Now here's the knocks on the headphone... It can connect to multiple devices (8 device max), but can only be used by one (it'll reconnect to the last device used). The QC35 connects to both devices and can be used by either or. Another one is that it didn't come with a travelling case like the QC35 did. The Sony does come with a micro usb charging cable and an AUX jack cable, but it would've been nice if a case or even a pouch was included at the price point. While it's subjective... it's not a requirement. Overall, I do like the headphone alot and will probably use it daily going forth. While there are many options available for the over the ear headphone, I hope this helps you decide what's best for you as it did for me. Thanks.

I had a chance to use these headphones and it's a good competitor for similarly priced headphones on the market. The quality is great, what you've come to expect from Sony. The ear cushions are comfortable to wear even for long periods. The sound quality is excellent, thanks to the 40mm dynamic drivers. Where these headphone differentiate themselves from other headphones is the AI noise cancelling and the 35hr battery use. I can't say that I used the headphones for the entire 35hrs but I used it for around 20 without charging and still had juice. I'm more than happy with the battery life of these headphones. So now on to the major feature about these headphones, the AI noise cancelling. Sony says that these will cancel background noise for a more enjoyable experience. I can tell the a slight different with the noise cancelling on vs. when it's off. Let be realistic ALL noise cancelling can't not cancel 100% of background noise but they can reduce it. These do a decent job of it. This works great on a plane where there is a droning sound from the engine.

I currently have 6 sets of BT headphones, and these are easily my favorite in terms of sound quality; 'nuf said they win! Well the funny thing about headphones is they also have to be comfortable, and these are, at least for an album or so, But I find after an hour or so I start to fatugue, as the weight of the head phones becomes more noticable. I also find that due to their closed design they may my head/ears sweat a bit. If I remove them for a few minutes and come back it's not so bad, but I can't sit down at my desk and use them continiously all morning, and that's what I'd like to do. I find using them on the phone to be convenient, although I feel like I'm talking in a tunnel, but the party I'm talking to says I sound very good and clear, could just be the echo canceling, confusing my head.... In any case I relly like the way they sound, nice full base, and relatively bright highs. A nice balance, I've used them with a iPhone and a computers BT output and they sound pretty good, but when wired to a DAC they shine. It really highlights the difference between BT streaming and a direct connection. With the wired connection the bass and mid-range sound stage is much wider and the highs really shine. Until I connected these headphones directly to my DAC I did not realize how good they were. But for me, they are still a bit on the heavy side. and since my iPhone does not headphone connection, when I travel I have to use bluetooth. So, I've deducted a star due to their weight, not due the the quality of the output, or the battery life, which I've not completely drained, and used them for over 10 hrs. These are really nice headphones, I really like they way they sound. A few years ago there was nothing like these (that's why I have 6 sets of BT headphones, they do keep getting better), and with battery life of over 10 hrs (Sony claims 35hrs, which is quite remarkable, considering none of my other pairs can get 8hrs, w/o charging) things do keep improving.

These Sony noise cancellng headphones are great, deliver high quality and clear sound. It has bluetooth connectivity along with NFC if your smartphone is NFC- enabled that gives one touch connectivity, headband is adjustable and ear cups are soft. Noise-Cancelling button is great feature that eliminates and block out environment noise around you with just press and hold NC button on the lower left side of the headphones. Fully satisfied for being comfortable using while listening to my music without any noise. I highly recommend it as high qulaity headphones at reasonable price compared with its competitors out there in the market.

Headphones will change the way you listen to music

From the moment that I slipped the CH700N headphones on, I knew they were something special. They are lightweight (under 9 oz.) and because of the padded earpads, they are super comfortable to wear even for extended periods of time. As wonderful as this first impression was, nothing could compare to the experience I had when I turned on some music. I typically listen to music through streaming services like Pandora or Spotify. So, when I began testing these headphones, I pulled up Pandora on my phone (after connecting via Bluetooth) and was blown away by what I heard. It was almost like having the speaker system from the movie theater on my head. I turned on my station based on No Diggity by Blackstreet and quickly discovered just how much depth these headphones provide to the tracks you are listening to. I believe that this might be due to the DSEE feature of the headphones. Since I’ve not encountered it before, I can’t say that with 100% certainty, but there is certainly a difference between these headphones and other premium brands. As if the natural sound of the headphones wasn’t enough, the companion apps for these headphones have a built-in equalizer with specialized presets. While I was on my 90s hip-hop station, I turned on the bass boost option in the EQ. Suddenly I had a subwoofer attached to my ears. You might think that I’m exaggerating, but there was so much bass pushed through the headphones that it honestly felt like that. One of the things I like the most about the headphones is that you can change that setting as needed. Even though the natural sound provided by the headphones is fantastic, you can customize it to your personal tastes by using the EQ and that takes your listening experience to a whole new level. In addition to a variety of music tracks, I also pulled up Netflix and with the EQ set to ‘none’ I watched the first few minutes of Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which includes two classic tracks of music that I’m quite familiar with — Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) and Mr. Blue Sky. The remarkable thing about the opening sequence to this movie isn’t that it has this music included, but that it has an awesome sound mix/design. There is overlaying vocals and sound effects. It was when I ran this particular test that I really felt like I was back int he movie theater. The mix was PERFECT. In addition to that, the surround sound worked wonderfully, too. These headphones also support phone calls with its built-in microphone. I made a couple of calls using the headphones and both people I called stated that they could hear an echo of themselves. I sounded fine (a bit of a tunnel sound to one of the call recipients, but not the other) but the echo of themselves was so distracting while we were talking that I had to switch to my iPhone instead of the headphones. From my end, I could hear them just find and didn’t detect any echoes. Because these are over-the-ear headphones, there is a fair amount of noise isolation that they provide even when the noise canceling feature is not enabled. Most ambient noises were blocked while I was wearing them, but I was still able to hear our intercom at work. With noise canceling turned on, there are gentle room noises — like hums and air handling — that were completely blocked out and I could not really hear any ambient noise. As far as the apps are concerned, there are two of them and they work in tandem. I sort of wish that the two apps were combined into one because it would just be easier to navigate through. The Music Center app is sort of a dashboard for the where you might be getting music from. In my case, iTunes Music, Pandora, and Spotify are included. The cool thing about this is that Sony has provided a simple solution for people who bounce around between apps (like me). You can select any of the options set before you and you are taken to that app. There are a lot of headphone apps out there that lock you into specific services rather than letting it be listener’s choice. The other app — Headphones Connect — is where you find all the controls for the headphones and the EQ. One of the really cool things I like about this app is that you can actually turn the Noise Cancelling feature of the headphones on and off from this app and in the Music Center app, you can power the headphones down. This is one of the reasons it would be nice if the apps were combined. These headphones have honestly changed the way that I watch videos and listen to music. No sounds have been muddied and they amplify sounds beautifully. Sony already has future plans for these headphones, too. According to their product page, the CH700N will be optimized for Google Assistant with an update. I can recommend these to any audiophile and think that they are well-worth the investment.

I really enjoyed these headphones. They look nice, and have big, comfortable ear covers. I often have a hard time finding headphones big enough to fit my head, and these fit great. They were easy to adjust and very comfortable. Unpacking and connecting is really easy. I used my phone to read the QR code and followed the instructions. The ONLY issue I had was the "Install from google play" button didn't do anything--you actually have to hit the very tiny "download" button under it (see screenshot). Once I figured that out the instructions were super simple to follow. The app walks you through set up and has some very useful instructions for how to adjust your sound. I've charged them once so far and they're still going through at least 10 hours of use. That's impressive. The sound quality is terrific, and the equalizer in the app has a lot of great settings that genuinely improve the sound. There are about seven presets and a manual adjustment setting as well. You can get roughly 80 feet or so from your source depending on obstructions, by my estimation. I was able to use them upstairs in my house with my phone downstairs The only element that I wasn't impressed with (and the cost of one star) was the noise cancelling. I tried it several different ways and just couldn't tell much of a difference. You can't hear a lot with them on anyway, but turning it on and turning it off didn't make any appreciable difference from what I could tell. I could still hear outside noises (tested with my TV on at normal volume, and the headphones set to low volume). If I were purchasing a pair of headphones solely based on noise cancellation I would look elsewhere. Overall this is a very good pair of wireless headphones that look good, are very comfortable and sound terrific, they just don't quite get the job done with noise cancellation.
