The noise cancelling leaves a bit to be desired, especially compared to the 1000 series. If noise cancelling is your main reason for looking at these, spend the extra. If you want good sound quality with some noise cancelling, these will fit the bill. Also, not good outside. They catch wind noise which will hinder sound quality considerably.

Thanks for the 4-stars rating! We are glad you are enjoying the sound quality of our XB900N headphones. These headphones have EXTRA BASS for impressively deep, punchy sound. We value your input and appreciate the feedback. Check that your headphones are running the latest firmware (via the Sony Headphones Connect app) for optimum performance. The noise canceling function works primarily on noise in the low frequency band. Although noise is reduced, it is not completely canceled.
To ensure optimal performance with noise canceling, please refer to the steps and guidelines below:
• Make sure that the noise canceling function is turned on.
• Adjust the earpad position to fit your ears.
• The noise canceling function is effective in low-frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.
You can also change the settings of the noise canceling function and the Ambient Sound Mode with the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app.
With regards to white noise or wind noise, If you feel annoyed or uncomfortable with White noise, please change [NC/Ambient] mode to [OFF].
How to change [NC/Ambient] settings:
If you have never connected to the Sony | Headphones Connect app: change [NC/Ambient] settings by pressing the CUSTOM button repeatedly on the left headset.
If you have previously connected to the Sony | Headphones Connect app: change [NC/Ambient] settings using the Headphones Connect app => [Sound] -> [Ambient Sound Control] -> toggle left to turn off.

When they say noise cancelling it is the truth. When we are sitting side by side I have to touch him to get his attention. He can't hear me talking at all.

Ear cup was coming off in the band was starting to creek. His immediate reaction was that leaves are better than his Bose. He love to touch controls, the premium feel of the headset, the sound quality offer from Sony, and the noise cancellation.

Stellar sound, decent noise cancelling

The more expensive 1000XM3’s had much better noise cancelling, not that these are bad at that, just not as good as the higher price model. The trade off I found was that the XB900n’s have more bass and louder overall sound. If you really want loud great sound with definite bass tones, you will want these. If you prefer more noise cancelling and great audio without wanting it really loud with a lot of bass, then you would want to buy the 1000XM3’s. Since my primary use for these is sound vs noise cancelling I decided to keep these and return the higher price model.

Sound is great! You can close your eyes and feel like you’re in another place. Only downside is for smaller heads the length cannot be shortened enough for the ear pieces to cover the ears—on me it’s about a half inch too low. But perfect for my daughter and she loves them. Great buy for the price!
