The New King of Budget Bluetooth Speakers!

If you are looking for a bluetooth speaker there are no shortage of choices. So many in fact that choosing one can many times be overwhelming. For me it is important to keep in mind the factors that matter most: sound quality, ease of use, durability, bang for the buck, and whether it is made by a good company with a reputation for quality. The Sony SRS-XB10 exhibits all of these great qualities and then some. First off I will get this out of the way. The speaker sounds fantastic! It gets REALLY loud, but maintains great sound quality. I was kind of shocked considering it's a little more than half the size of a soda can. The sound is not tinny at all and definitely sits on the bassy side of the sound spectrum without getting too muddy. This is arguably the most important factor, and the speaker excels here. It is also IXP5 waterproof. This means that it will be protected from water spray from any angle for at least 3 minutes, and dust that would normally interfere with operation of the speaker. It really shows in the construction of the speaker too. Everything is fully enclosed, encased, and sealed. The whole thing is rubberized to maintain a great grip in all conditions. Really impressive. For me this means that I can use it when I workout, and afterwards when I shower without worrying about the speaker being exposed to moisture. I am sure it would do well poolside too. The operation is very straightforward, and if you have ever used a bluetooth speaker or headset there will be no surprises here. I had it up and running within seconds. There is a convenient loop for hanging the speaker where ever, and it is removable if you would rather not use it. It also has a really cool feature where you can add a second speaker, and they will play in stereo. This is a great feature! You would be able to position the two speakers to distribute the sound however you want. While I haven't tried it yet I will definitely pick up another one of these soon to do so. Overall I am extremely impressed with the SRS-XB10. It really is the little speaker that could. I honestly like to be critical when I write a review, but I haven't found anything to complain about yet. If you are looking for a quality yet inexpensive bluetooth speaker you've just found it.

I've tried a lot of BT speakers, each must be considered differently, based the purpose for each. BT speakers that plug into the wall are different than portable battery powered speakers. And now that several companies have "water proof" speakers, that you can take to the beach, and use without worry outside in the elements, I see a new distinction. Sony's new XB10 is about 1/2 the size of a can of soda (12oz 355ml), and for it's size it packs a punch, delivering reasonable bass for it's size. I believe sony will have 4 speakers in this series, this being the smallest. I thought comparing it the the JBL Flip 3, a speaker twice it's size but about it's price was a fair comparison. The Sony's bass was a little thinner, the hight's were similar, although the Sony high's we much more directional, but the JBL's midrange was much fuller. I also compared the Sony to a OontZ Angle 3 (Cambridge) where it was the clear winner, much better bass ans an over all better tone and it could be driven much louder before it distorted. The JBL could be driven much louder than the XB10, but I'd not recommend driving either at "10" cranked fully up as both started distorting when they max output. The Sony won't quite fit in your pocket pants, but it has an attached ring t help you carry it. Sony says 2 XB10's can independently paired to a device to give you true stereo output, but I only had one to test. This is a great feature, I have 2 JBL Flip 3's for just this purpose, and when they stay connected they works great (which is to say they don't always stay paired), I'm sure 2 XB10's would provide plenty of sound to fill a mid-sized room (bedroom, dorm, kitchen...). I liked the Sony for it's size, it's supposed to get 16 hours from a single charge (I've not gotten more than 8 hrs from my Flip 3), so 16 hours is pretty respectable. The Sony also supports NFC, which I could not test, and it comes in several colors. When paired with a phone the speaker can be used be used as a speaker phone, this worked very nicely, the person I was talking to said they could not tell I was on a external speaker, and that the sound was quite natural (no echo). This may be a feature that's quite handy if your listening to tunes and a call comes in, it mutes the sound and the 2-way voice kicks in. IMHO the XB-10 is a good speaker for the size and price, I'm sure it's bigger brothers provide better sound in a larger, more expensive package. I'd consider getting 2 XB-10's for real stereo output over a bigger mono speaker.

This is a great little bluetooth speaker. I was skeptical but it really has Extra Bass. I can feel it thumping through the table or counter when I am playing music. Amazing for such a small portable speaker. In addition to having full base it is also clear. It isn’t muddy and it doesn’t get distorted at high volume. The carrying strap can be used to suspend/hang the speaker but it also doubles as a cradle/stand so you can aim the speaker horizontally and it will keep it from rolling around. Most of the time I listen with it directed at me this way but you can also stand it on end pointing straight up. The rechargeable battery lasts a long time. They claim 16 hours and I have no reason to doubt that. I’ve been using it 2-4 hours a day for 5 days and it is still going strong. The bluetooth connection is maintained even when I am on the other side of my condo so it has good range. It is very easy to pair and if you have an Android phone with NFC it is even easier. It has a built-in auxiliary mini-jack input if your music source doesn’t support bluetooth. It includes a USB cable for charging. There is a little light that turns on while charging and it turns off when charging is complete. I’m very happy with that design, great for color blind people (hard for me to tell the difference with lights that change color). A great design feature is the speaker is water resistant. You don’t want to submerge it but you can use this where it might get splashed with water and not worry. IPX5 means it is rated to survive water jets. Water projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm) against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects. The speaker has a built-in microphone and can be used as a hands-free speakerphone when it is paired with your phone. I did test this feature and it works well but I don’t think I will use it often. If I’m listening to music from my phone and someone calls it would be convenient to answer a quick call over the speaker and then get right back to the music when the call is done. I would never set out to place a call using this device if I weren’t already listening to music. Speakerphones annoy… Another great feature I am unable to try at this point but look forward to is connecting a 2nd speaker for true stereo sound. Two of these little guys can be synced so that one becomes the Left channel and one the Right channel. Not only would this provide better quality sound than one does already but I assume it would also be quite a bit louder (maybe twice as loud). I really have no complaints about this speaker and I look forward to picking up a second one on sale some day. It is very portable, sounds great, lasts a long time on a singe charge and it even looks good. Win!

The SONY XB10 Bluetooth Speaker is small, highly portable, and has some power. It was easy to use out of the box. I gave it a full charge, then turned it on near my desktop computer. It paired instantly, and I was listening to music while I worked. After that initial pairing, I just held the “on” button down for a few seconds, and it paired with my iPhone without effort. It has a comfortable plastic ring and a short cord that make it easy to carry around, and so I did – around our 2-story house, out the front door to the mailbox, all while getting the signal from my desktop computer. Of course, there is a limit to how far it can be from its source and still pick up the signal, but its range is extensive enough that I can keep the XB10 with me or park it in a convenient spot with no interruption. I haven’t really tested the extent of its battery life, because it lasts through a full day, and that’s enough for me. The sound is excellent for the speaker’s size, clear and rich. I compared it with another, well-respected brand’s small Bluetooth speaker, and there was no meaningful difference. I have only the one XB10, so I haven’t tried adding an extra one and getting a stereo sound, but I like that this would be a possibility. The markings for the various function buttons are small, pale, and not easy to see, and that does pose a problem for me. However, it does have small raised dots at the “play” and “increase volume” buttons, so as I get more accustomed to using them I probably won’t have to look to activate those. Overall, the SONY XB10 makes a nice addition to my listening options.

I was looking for a speaker that was light enough to be portable and that I could use to project audio (videos, music, etc) for presentations I do for work. This fit the bill perfectly. It was simple to set up to my laptop with an audio jack. The sound projected well in a fairly large room and was not distorted. It is small enough that it fits in my computer case. With the 16 hour battery, I don't have to worry about it running out of juice. (NOTE: the directions say to charge it to its full capacity once every 6 months to maintain performance.) It was super easy to pair my devices (phone and iPod) to the speaker using the Bluetooth. If you device has One-touch, you can pair it that way. The Speaker Add function allows you to listen with two units. That will be great to use at gatherings I hold at my house. I can set up speakers in multiple rooms and even outside on the porch. With the long battery life, I won't have to worry about recharging the speaker until the next day. The unit is IPX5 water resistant. The specification protects against rain and tap water. My advice would be to read the instructions carefully about this feature since it is easy to impact the water resistant performance if you are not careful. That includes cleaning the surface. Where you place the unit is also critical to avoid any damage as things like temperature affect it. I did a sound test of the Sony SRS-XB10 against my husband's Bose Mini II SoundLink speaker. We both heard a surprisingly great sound from the Sony speaker that equaled the speaker that cost more than twice as much. The Extra Bass made the sound so rich. Two other features the speaker comes with are a built-in microphone, which allows you to accept hands-free calls through the speaker, and a cute little carrying strap. For the reasonable price of this unit with the great sound, I would highly recommend purchasing this. If you entertain a lot, I would suggest getting a pair to cover a larger square footage.

I am definitely a fan of Sony products in general, especially when it comes to sound reproduction, however, I think their effort with this bluetooth speaker fell short in its main attraction, the Bass. The speaker has a solid sound overall, and it is very intuitive to operate, with device pairing and general device controls laid out in a user-friendly format. I've paired it with a few different devices, and it is the easiest/quickest to use of any of the bluetooth devices that I currently own (including some other Sony products). When it comes to sound, it has a very clear crisp sound, with two exceptions. At higher volumes, the speaker sounds a bit muddy, although for its size, it still handles the higher volumes pretty well. The primary issue is that these speakers are billed as being "extra bass" bluetooth speakers, and although they do give better bass reproduction than average speakers in this size category, the bass does not capture the lower-frequency lows, leaving me as a bass-lover longing for more from a speaker that seems like it should be able to give me the full scale bass experience that I love. For the more casual music listener that is either not concerned much with bass, or who plans to pair this with another speaker (a feature included on this unit), or someone who plans to use this for reasons other than music reproduction, this speaker will work fine. For die-hard bass lovers wanting a speaker that captures the lowest lows and produces them clearly at higher volumes, you will probably want to pass on this one, or grab 2 and pair them to get some extra umph with the bass (but if you are going to get two at full price, you may as well get a better-equipped speaker altogether). I am giving this a 3, although it is more of a 3.5 (I'm rounding down since the main bass feature did not perform as well as expected). Not a bad speaker (especially for pure vocals), but there are better options out there (by Sony, JBL, and others) with a more balanced sound and stronger Bass. Would recommend to anyone not specifically looking for Bass.

Good bathroom/shower speaker, but limited output.

First off, this speaker isn't worth the MSRP of $59.99 by any stretch. It's really not a whole lot louder than the Sony XB01. Both speakers are water resistant, but not water proof. This means the XB10 will be able to withstand some splashes and wetness, but don't submerge it in water. Overall sound quality is decent for it's size, but it doesn't have a much bass output for being touted as a "Extra Bass" speaker. It's not very loud, either, even at max volume. This would work best as a shower/bathroom speaker or maybe a smaller room indoors. Outside the sound will get lost in the openness and what bass is present will disappear with the output. Build quality is pretty solid, but I don't care much for the buttons not being raised up so you can feel them. They sit underneath the rubberized shell that the speaker is covered with. The speaker comes with a cord attached to a rubberized ring that can be used to sit the speaker facing horizontally instead of the vertical design it has sitting upright. Two speakers can also easily be paired together if you have a second XB10 on deck. Overall, this speaker gets a 3.5/5 stars from me and that is when it's priced on sale for around $30-$35. At $60 this wouldn't even be worth a purchase. It's a bit limited in output and bass capability, but has a decent battery life for a smaller speaker. Use this speaker where it will perform it's best and it's worth a buy on sale.

Ok. I'll be honest with you. If you like to carry your music wherever you go, its better to grab a pair of headphones. I already have a SRS-WOW XB3 model at home and thought to use these speakers as well for the fun of it. I got 2 of them to get a stereo effect. It gave a good sound. Below are some Pros and Cons: Pros: 1. The size of the speakers are small. But they do produce a wide spectrum of good music. I was spellbound with such audio experience. However, I paired 2 of them to get a good sound in my room. 2. Good battery life. I used them at 40% volume for the full 15 hour stretch after charging them to 100%. They seem to have a decent backup. They charge up well fast as well. 3. They use micro usb to charge. This might not be listed as a pro or a con in many other speakers, but sony is famous for using their own proprietary charging cords and they are a real pain in the neck when the cable gets wear and tear. Having these headphones use micro-usb seems nice and you do have a wide option now to use for. Cons: 1. They say these headphones give good bass, but I find that hard to believe. The sound becomes distorted when used at 100%. The optimal level is at 80% which isn't too loud but its gets the job done nevertheless. 2. Very directional: You have to be very wary of how to place them. A wrong angle would give you sound that isn't optimal enough. Go check out some video reviews and you'd know what I mean. 3. They do not stay in the place firmly. I never like to change the positioning of these, but it would have been better if they had some firm grip on the surface. A slight touch seems to tip them off to fall. 4. Only splash proof. Sadly, these speakers are only splash proof and not fully water proof, a few droplets wont do harm, but you shouldn't be washing these off with water. 5. Rubber surface. Dont get me wrong, these speakers look great. But over time the curved surface of these speakers gathers dust and wears off eventually which makes it look cheap and there's nothing you can do. Conclusion: If you need a budget friendly speaker that gets the job done, go for it. Else go for the JBL or even the XB 20 or XB 30 if you can spare at that price point.

Convenient and durable, this speaker far exceeded my expectations. I have used other bluetooth speakers in the past, but this one blows them all away. Out of the box, the unit was charged, and immediately available for use. I turned on bluetooth on my phone, and within seconds, I was connected to the speaker. The small, sleek design made this speaker so easily portable. The outside of the speaker is covered in a rubber casing, which seems like it would help this speaker survive a direct impact or fall from a counter or desktop. There is also a ring attached, which would allow students to attach it to their backpack, and enjoy music while walking from class to class. Battery life is extremely long. I took this speaker to a friend's house two nights in a row and used it non-stop, and didn't have to charge it. I would highly recommend this speaker for cost, convenience, and overall ease of use.

This 11/25/2018 review pertains to the Sony XB10 Portable Blue Tooth Speaker (Black). There is good and not so good regarding these two speakers I bought on 09/16/2018. The good: really excellent all around sound. The not so good: these speakers are finicky regarding their placement. Generally, they seem to be most comfortable with uninterrupted line-of-sight placement. Too often even very short distances, and large or small objects located between the speakers and the sound source (in my case, a notebook computer), cause a speaker to loose signal. So, to make these speakers behave, I must be most careful about placement and distance. The previous Jam2 speakers I owned, other than sound quality, were far superior regarding distance and placement. On a lesser note, the controls for these speakers are small, lightly 'printed' on the exterior and difficult to see in poor light. Once again, the Jam2 speakers turned on and off with a push of a button on the bottom of the device (and located in the middle), so even a blind person in a dark room could find that button. In the end, I kept these speakers as the sound quality outweighed the somewhat annoying placement and visibility of controls disappointments. My rating would have been a solid 5 rather than a weak 4 if not for these issues. On the recommendation selection, there should perhaps be a 'maybe' offering added to the 'yes' or 'no' choices.

    Large sound from compact speaker

If you are looking for a rich room filling sound from a compact bluetooth speaker, stop reading now and spend the $150+ on a Bose or Sonos. For about $50 or so, the Sony XB10 gives you ample sound. The vocals are clear, along with high range. The low range, including bass, is some what muted, but for a small speaker, it delivers an worthy punch. When I tried this outside, much of the sound was lost due to no walls to help reflect the sound waves. I hate turning up the volume as this is a sure way to cause damage to any speaker. Set up very easy via Bluetooth (for those of you that havent figured out how to connect via bluetooh, you are able to connect with a good ole fashion wire). One interesting thing about this speaker is that you can pair an additional speaker to create a RIGHT and LEFT stereo unit. I have yet to try this as I am debating whether to spend more money. Im always suspicious about "water resistance" designs. So Ill just leave that for those of you that have actually tried to use this in the rain. Battery life is on point. The price point is fair as I wouldn't be upset if someone decided to steal at the beach or ruined by a summer down pour.

Excellent Bluetooth Speaker for My Uses

I purchased the Sony - XB10 Portable Bluetooth Speaker to amplify the sound from my Echo Dot. In particular, I wanted an inexpensive portable Bluetooth speaker that would do a good job broadcasting music. After much research, I found that the XB10 was the only such speaker for under $50 (Best Buy sale) that did an adequate job with lower frequency (Bass) sounds. It is only the size of a coffee mug and it fits inside one of my cups. The XB-10 paired with my Dot quickly and is recognized by the Dot whenever the XB-10 speaker is turned on. The battery is said to play for 16 hours between charges. This may be true if played at relatively low volumes. I tried it at a relatively high-volume (about 8 out of 10), and it played for about 10 hours before the orange LED flashed and the speaker shut down. However, according to specifications and reviews that I have read, most other portable speakers in this price range have shorter times of use between charges. I like the ability to move the speaker around my modest (3-bedroom, split-level) house without losing contact with my Dot, and this speaker excels at this. While at Best Buy, I compared the sound of the XB-10 to its' larger "siblings" (XB-20 and XB-30). They all had outstanding bass for their sizes and prices, but the XB-10 was all I needed to fill my needs. If not, I would have brought it back sand exchanged it for one of the other Sony "siblings." I am very happy with my purchase.

I wanted something not too expensive for my son. After all, teenagers don't really know the value of money yet! :) I didn't want something too big either as we might bring this along with us on vacation. This is mainly to be used with a smart phone and maybe a tablet. My choices were the UE Wonderboom, JBL Flip 4, and this Sony. The Flip 4 had the best sound but it was somewhat "direction" in that the two drivers are on the ends so they fire in opposite directions. Note that you cannot stand it on its end as that will cover up one of the drivers. The UE and Sony were similar sounding but both cannot be stero since they have only one speaker. That was not a deal breaker since it's mono if you listen via speaker on your phone anyway. Givent hat the Sony sounded similar to the UE and at only half the price (it was on sale), I decided to give it a try. WOW! The sound is clear, strong bass, the highs could be a touch better but this is from something half the size of a can of soda! It's also loud enough. On our first charge, it lasted 17 days, on it's loudest setting, used about 20-30 minutes a day. That's amazing! Remember, it was on it's loudest setting (and so was the phone driving it). Note that the UE and Flip 4 are waterproof and the Sony is not. It's only splash proof but waterproof was not our requirement.

I recently bought a new big Deskside computer and was dismayed to find it was completely "audioless", not even the cheapo little builtin speaker that every motherboard I've ever seen comes equipped with. since the 80s. So I went looking for some small, low end audio device I could attach and luckily wound up taking to Adam who didn't have just one suggestion, this young man helped me winnow down seemingly countless options, both wired and bluetooth. I admitted I wanted "small" and I wanted "cheap", just a basic speaker, and he still spent an inordinate amount of time with me and didn't trivialize my request in any way. Adam showed me this great little bluetooth unit and even demoed it for me. tt was way beyond anything I thought I could get for the price and it sounds great (I'm somewhat hearing iimpaired, so even hearing "beeps" has become an issue). Not only does this unit provide excellent sound quality, it also functions as a bluetooth microphone! Way beyond the capabilities I thought could get for the price, so I can even Skype through the box. Thanks again Adam, you provided excellent service and you took the time and made the effort to exactly match me to what I wanted and even went beyond the call!

Summary: Bass is loud but muddy, highs are good on-axis with top of speaker but noticeable attenuated otherwise. Good battery life, charges in a reasonable amount of time. The XB10 is clearly designed to pump out lots of deep bass - and, given its size, the bass is pretty loud. Unfortunately, it's kind of muddy; when listening to songs like Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" with a very distinct bass line, it doesn't sound bad; when listening to songs with more complicated low end, it turns to mush. If the top of the speaker is pointed at you, the high frequencies sound pretty good - unfortunately, the top of the speaker is normally pointed at the ceiling, leaving the highs sounding dull and attenuated. With those issues in mind, the XB10 does some significantly better than other similarly-sized Bluetooth speakers I've heard. Would have preferred a carabiner clip to the rather odd plastic circle thing that it comes with.

first off it easily paired with our devices - no problem at all recognizing my phone. The sound is very clear and loud enough to enjoy. The buttons are very easy to use, especially the power on and off button where you just have to barely touch it to go on or off. many models I've had in the past you have to hold down or keep pressing, but this one is very easy to use. As a bonus you can also advance the tracks and pause it from the device rather than your phone. The battery seems to last a long time – we really haven't let it run all the way out yet we just assumed it needed charge after a weeks use fairly regularly. It's also a nice small size, so it doesn't take up a lot of space. Also one thing we didn't know before we bought it is that you can link more than one of these devices together to create multiple speakers with the same music. This will be very useful if you have a large group at your house in several different rooms. Overall I would definitely recommend it. We actually have 3!

First: My wife and I are old folks, grandparents of a Millenial. We are fine with classic rock, really like classical, but are not fans of the new-fangled stuff. Using the demo mode on the units at my local Best Buy, not only did I dislike any of the tracks playing, but they sounded pretty thin & tinny on this speaker, marginally tinnier than some about twice the price. But the demo tracks seem to be the problem--lots of exaggerated treble and screechy singers. I finally just said "what the heck" and bought this speaker. We got it home, charged it, paired it with our iPhones, played iclassical.com--and we were delighted. The bass is solid but doesn't sound exaggerated, and the frequency response seems quite balanced. No distortion, wide dynamic range. It is far beyond not only our iPhones' speakers, but a CD/radio we have that has Bluetooth linking. We are going to use this when cooking in the kitchen, in the living room when doing crafts, etc. It seems really well-made, and is easily carried. The water-resistance is not a big deal to us, but might be handy at some time. This is a reasonably-priced speaker and seems do do what we need.

alright. so, check this out. i've tried this speaker. i listened in store and it did sound kind of weak but store and on the go and home are completely different. this has to be no doubt about 1 really awesome speaker. its the first, that i could have ware i get 16 hours on the go. it really sounds like a many portable system all on what your music taste is. i plan to get another one so i can see the true stereo connections. one of the big bonuses is that, what ever provider in phone service u have, if someone has same provider and u have hd calling, it even works for that. some bt speakers do not but this one does allowing u to get the same quality sound out of it on a call the same as if u were holding phone to yout ear. i do not like however, that i have to attach something else on to the hanging clip just to have it clipped on me. that is kind of odd. outside of that however this is a awesome speaker. the only other thing that i dislike is that u have to turn the speaker a certain way so that u can be able to talk in mike to be heard. mike is not placed in good area for that. but overall is a banga. thx for reading.

Buy two or more for stereo experience

I bought two of these for my screened porch. With the push of a button they recognize each other, sync, and then turn into stereo. I have them ten feet apart at about five feet off the ground on little shelves I made. (Still need to paint the little shelves --see photo). They sound incredible and fill the porch (and back yard) with sound. And for only eighty bucks a pair? What a deal. Then there's the battery. These aren't six or eight hour batteries. They are about sixteen. I ran them for several hours a day for three days. Then I wired the chargers to where they are always near the back of each unit. If they run low I can plug them in where they sit and keep listening. It took me about ten minutes or so to figure them out, but now it's so easy. I walk up to the unit and push the power button, and then push the other unit's power. That's it. Open my phone and listen to music. One speaker starts, then the other joins a second later, and then full stereo for hours. When I'm done I only touch the power button on one and they both shut off. They might have an auto shutoff but I'm not sure. I'm extremely satisfied with these.

I can't tell you how much I researched what speaker to get before chosing this one. I chose it because the bass, I wasn't using it for a party or anything so I didn't need 360 sound or for it to be crazzzy loud. It keeps a charge forever and the bass is awesome. I haven't heard the JBL or UE boom in person but from what I've read they don't have the same bass because the get so loud that if they did it would distort. It's a choice between more bass and a little less volume as to not distort (still gets too loud to have max volume right next to you) or crisp loud volume with less bass. You have to choose based off of what you're using it for. Us was hiking, being outside, in the garage etc. so the smaller size w the strap holder withhh the extra bass and way too loud to have close to you anyways, this one was perfect. If you want crisp clean sound but aren't a bass head probably go for the JBL or UE boom but if you want basss and personal portable speaker get this one!!
