    Good Sound / Poor Construction

My wife bought these as a gift for me last June from Best Buy. I use these every day at work and carry them back and forth using a hard clamshell case that I bought only days after my wife gave them to me. I treat these phones with care and respect since they were a gift from my wife and, at $125.00, they represent a significant price upgrade from the $50.00 Skullcandy Hesh 2 phones I lost. I take care of my things and expect them to last. The sound on these is pretty good and the features are nice. I enjoy the noise cancelling feature and the extra base feature works fine. One thing that does annoy is an occasional, repeated drop of the sound signal, which can only be described as a “hiccup” during song playback. There are supposed to be different playing modes that you can enter by turning the phones on while holding a combination of buttons that’s supposed to suppress this problem. These different playing modes have never worked for me. Furthermore, this is a problem that I have never experienced using any Skullcandy phones at half the price of these. Now on to the real reason for this review. As I said before, I transport these phones in a hard case and treat them very gently. Last week I rotated the left cup and held it to my ear to listen to something without putting them completely on. The cups on these phones rotate so that they can lay flat for easier packing and also for “DJ” style listening. A little while later when I went to put them on, I noticed one of the arms that held the left ear cup was broken. So the weight of the phones being held sideways to listen to only one cup must have broken the arm. To say that I was disappointed is a vast understatement. However, the disappointment was only beginning. I went home and located the receipt. These phones are only eight months old and there’s a one-year warranty. Cool. I still had the box with the original paperwork (that’s how new they are) so I broke it out and called Sony Customer Support and told them my story expecting them to replace these defective phones. Less than ten minutes into the call the guy on the other end says, “Let me check our database.” [Keyboard typing sounds…] “No, I don’t see any reports of this type of problem with this model so this would fall under physical damage, which is not covered under the warranty. You can try calling an authorized repair shop to see if they can be fixed.” What?! Frustrated, I took the number and called the repair center, which is located in New York. They said they could be fixed. It would be $18.00 to ship them, $75.00/hour for labor, plus parts. So $93.00 before parts to fix some phones that my wife originally paid $125.00 for? “No thanks,” I told the lady, “I’ll try to glue them back together myself or get a different pair.” I guarantee if it comes to the latter option, it won’t be another pair of Sony phones. By the way, after looking on the Sony website, I see that there are several reports of the exact same problem that I had. I don’t know what database the Sony Customer Rep was searching, but obviously, it wasn’t their own website. Avoid this model unless you want the same hassle. Seriously. You’ve been warned.

    Defective product/swivel

Hello - I bought this product at the Best Buy store in New Hartford, NY in April. I picked these out in about five minutes as a replacement for an older pair of corded Sony noise cancelling headphones. I bought these for the great sound, the bluetooth and noise cancelling features. They were a mid-range price and on sale for $179, down from $249. I paid on my debit card and left the store. The sound, the bass, the Sony app and pairing the device - flawless. They paired with my Android phone, the Fire TV stick and Windows 10 laptop with ease. I was very excited! They are a little large/bulky, however, I am interested in the quality of the sound and not the appearance. Incredible bass/sound! I thought - at last - a great pair of headphones! Within three weeks, I picked up the headphones to clean them/wipe them off and one of the cups simply fell out in my hand and was dangling by the cord. :( :( :( I was shocked!!! Apparently, these are of the swivel and fold design as were my previous pair. Unfortunately, something cracked on the inside of the headband and the swivel popped out of the headband. Upon inspection, the plastic cracked and could not be fixed! (CHEAP!!!!) Unfortunately, I was just a couple days past the return window of two weeks. I contacted the local Best Buy store (or so I thought - more on this later) and explained the situation and they suggested to contact Sony due to "physical damage." I did contact Sony support and was flatly told "NO" and they would not cover repair for the headphones due to "physical damage." I was referred to "Product Repair" where I could pay for my brand new headphones to be repaired for a price. I certainly did not break them and if they are that fragile to break just two-three weeks in - then I would consider them defective in terms of materials used. The cups swivel and fold - so I would assume they would be able to hold up for several years before running into this type of issue, especially in this price range! I contacted Best Buy again and asked for a manager to see what considerations they would make. I carefully explained the entire story and took down names of who I talked to. They suggested that I bring in the product for a manager to review and they would make a determination. I did some research on this subject and found several similar reviews on both the Best Buy and Sony websites. I printed those to use as a way to work with management on this subject. After renting a car and traveling an hour to this location, I went to the customer service desk and spoke to three managers. I was informed that Best Buy enforces their policy and the product was outside of the return window and physically damaged and that there was nothing that could be done. When I asked for the staff members that I had talked to on the phone, I was told that they don't work there! I later was told that when you call the local store number, it is transferred to a call center in Syracuse, NY. I explicitly told the "Call Center" all of the details of what happened previously. The management also informed me that the call centers "mistake" in asking me to have the product evaluated by management was not their normal policy and that it would be "addressed" with their management. The Call Center is not in alignment with store policies. This is NOT fair to the customer! I asked for the store manager several times after speaking with the manager on duty and two assistant managers that simply quoted policy. They also quizzed me why I didn't buy the $60 product protection plan. Why should I have to pay $60 to cover what is obviously a design flaw? What happened to quality materials and workmanship? Why should the consumer need to pay additional money to cover products that break so easily? I was also asked why I was asking managers to break "THREE" of their policies and was given the impression that I should know better. Really?? The headphones were $195 with tax and it's not something I'm just going to let go of. At last, the store manager, John came out and I re-explained the entire situation and basically pleaded with him to make an exception. He brought over the sales associate to look at the headphones. He said that as a manager, he appreciated my story/situation and would make an exception to Best Buy's policies in this case and that he valued my business. I did thank him as I previously purchased a Samsung 48" LED TV at this location 3-4 years ago and is an exceptional TV. We went over to the headphones aisle and then learned that the headphones were no longer on sale and the price climbed to $249. If I wanted to "exchange" them at this point, I was informed that I would need to pay the difference of now $70. Afraid of this model, I would also need to purchase the protection plan for $60, which is now going to cost me $130, in case they break again. I also considered several alternatives, however, I was fairly upset and I did not want to purchase any other headphones without the proper research and investigation. I was able to obtain a store credit and I left the store. I do thank the store manager, John - for making this exception and providing excellent customer service! Very much appreciated and I will consider Best Buy again in the future. However, with this said - I cannot recommend this product at all for any reason! Sony really should make this a metal hinge/swivel due to the constant flexing of the cup in this area. This is also my first issue with a return at Best Buy so I will be a lot more cautious before I make future purchases at this store. Thank you for your time.

I've purchased these headphones last year. I made a research and deliberately chose this model over XB950B1 because of the reviews about the broken hinge on them. Unfortunately, XB950N1 has the very same problem. For 8 months I really enjoyed the sound and noise cancellation they produce. I used them at my home office desk while working. Never took them outside, or even out of the room for a matter of fact. Never dropped or mishandled them. But still, either due to poor product design or materials quality, they cracked and broke on the hinge after only 8 months of gentle usage. I only noticed that when they broke completely, but I suspect it started with a crack which had led to this. My headphones are still under 1 year Sony warranty, so I've called the support and described my issue. But they said they will not do anything because the physical damage is not under their warranty. OK I get it when an item is broken because of the circumstances, but this one is an obvious design flaw and material quality issue. After zero help from the support, I tried to glue broken parts together, which didn't work. Looking for spare parts online but can't find anything. Now when one part of the hinge is broken there is too much pressure on the second one and it also cracked and will eventually break. Will try to fix it myself, but it is really frustrating to be left with broken headphones on hands especially when they are not that cheap.

Let me preface this review by first saying like most people I spent a lot of time studying up on what I'm spending my money on. I had been wanting a quality pair of Bluetooth stereo headphones for quite some time. I scoured the internet looking for the best ones. Money wasn't an option. I just wanted the best of the best. I looked at Bose, Dre Beats, and Sony. I inevitably came upon these. I read the testimonials from several customers and decided that these had to be the best fit for me. I ordered them, received them and immediately fell in love with the sound, the comfort and the overall quality. Now since I put down over 200.00 on these, I treated them like they were made of gold. I always kept them in their bag and never left them laying around. It was after having them for only a few months that they started falling apart. I tried to fix them myself but they only got worse. I tried taping them and then gluing them but nothing worked. They are now in such a state that I can't even use them. I can't believe that they fell apart like they did. I don't have the money to replace them. I would strongly recommend against anyone spending their hard earned money on these unless you want them collecting dust in your junk drawer.

    Great Sound, Poor Fit

I travel to Japan regularly for the military. I have used ear buds for years on my flights; however, these can start to hurt my ears after a while. I have been looking into getting a good set of noise canceling, over the ear headphones for the flights for quite some time. I have tried out the Bose, Beats, JBL and Sony headphones in the store several times. I love the feel of the Bose and I think their Noise Canceling ability is second to none. I just can't get past the price. I know you get what you pay, but the price is ridiculous. I finally decided the price point on the Sony's was too good to not jump on. I purchased these headphones and couldn't wait to try them out...I have been completely disappointed and will be returning them. First off, they paired with my Bluetooth immediately; however, the connection was poor. Every single song I listened to seemed like it was slowed down. I reset my phone and the earphones and this corrected immediately. Second, all the features on the unit don't work with android. I understand Apple is a big deal, but Android does pretty good for itself. You think Sony would want to cater to half the population. Lastly, the fit is awful!!! Immediately after putting them on I could feel them squeezing my temple. I wore them for 5 minutes and had a mild headache. I tried to wear them for an hour, when I took them off, I had a headache that lasted the rest of the night. The band between the muffs seems to drill into the top of your head even though it doesn't seem to have that much pressure. The pain was unbearable. There is no way I could wear these on a 12 hour flight. I will be biting the bullet and dropping the extra money on the Bose QC35s. On a positive note, the sound quality was amazing. The noise canceling could be better, but I thought it was adequate. My music did sound pretty good through these.

Ear Cup Broken, Sony Will Not Honor Warranty

I purchased these headphones for my son for Christmas of 2018. He had them less than three months when the right ear cup fell off of the headband. Through a Google search, I found this to be a frequently reported problem. I called Sony at their warranty claims phone number to report the defect in workmanship. They denied my request for repair, stating that they will only fix problems inside the headphones with electronic components and not the workmanship of the headphones themselves. They referred me to the Sony national customer relations center for further assistance. This center can only be contacted by email. I responded by email with all of the information they requested of me and sent the proof of purchase from Best Buy from my purchase history to the web address they specified. They rejected my proof of purchase because it was from my buying history and was not the complete purchase detail. I drilled into the purchase history at Best Buy and sent them the entire purchase detail as a PDF. For over five days now, they have not contacted me nor made any effort to assist me with my claim. Be warned that these headphones are made of poor quality and Sony will likely not respond to your warranty request either.

The durability is so bad its not worth the investment even with the protection plan. I only used this pair for running on the treadmill and light circuit routines at the gym. Warning, I highly recommend you purchase a protection plan because you may have a issue within a few weeks to a year with a crack at headphone hinge that you can't fix or get a replacement part for (even with extreme care and light usage). I will just take a loss on it ($250+). This is my 3rd pair and I refuse to keep spending more money at Best Buy paying for the option to exchange it and then purchasing another protection plan renewal everytime they break despite how much I liked the sound quality and comfort. Frustrating because I liked them so much at 1st but it has a major design flaw...sadly I can't continue to recommend this product. (Picture: Less than 6 months/like new appearance with this pair and the hinge is broke).

Did not last one year before they stress fractured

    Posted

The sound and noise cancellation of these are very nice. they sound really really good. But the plastic they are made of is obviously sub-par. With normal daily use, less than 6 months old, they have stress fractured at the point that has the smallest amount of plastic connecting the earpieces. On each earpiece. I am sending them back to Sony for evaluation, but they have warned me that physical damage is not usually covered and I will have to pay shipping to get them returned back to me, should they evaluate that they are not covered under the warranty. They have been gently taken care of and never dropped or abused, so I would have expected them to last longer than this. Very disappointing.

Received these as a Christmas gift. I absolutely adored them, so much so that I used them every day, everywhere: commuting, at work, around the house, wherever. Comfortable to wear, with great sound quality and battery life. After ~6 months of use, as mentioned in some other reviews, one of the plastic "arms" connected to the ear cups broke. Then another one broke, on the other side. After this, it was only a matter of time until the remaining arms would break with all the weight on them, now one of the cups is only connected by a cord. Sony does not cover "physical damage" with their warranty, even though it occurred through normal use and is obviously a problem with the build itself. They refer you to their third party repair company that will charge ~$75 for a repair.

I'm an audio professional with several pair of headphones. I got these for the airplane because I wanted a closed ear, noise cancelling solution. Unfortunately I didn't have time to try them out before my lengthy flight, because they were unusable on the flight. Besides the fact they they were the muddiest, most muffled, bassist headphones I have ever put on, the power and noise cancelling control buttons were identical and laid out so I had to remove the phones each time to see which one I had pressed. The lack of an indicator light on these buttons made it more challenging because the only way to know if the power is on or the noise cancelling is active is through the bluetooth, which means one has to be wearing the phones to hear, which is impossible if you haven't memorized each button's location. Fortunately Best Buy gave me a store credit. I usually like everything Sony, just not this product.

I got these for myself at Christmas because of the recommendation of the Best Buy staff. I've loved them for 2 1/2 months. The pairing and charging is good. The charge last a long time. The noise canceling works great. Some of the buttons on the head phoes are too easy to turn on like BaseEffect. I use these so I don't have to listen to news when I'm cooking dinner ( In-Laws ). I just picked them up and noticed that they broke at a weak point. They were never dropped or abused. Mostly used around the house while in-laws were watching TV. Hopefully the pictures show what I'm talking about.

I brought these for the noise cancelling feature so I can work in silence at my desk. Within 14 days the headphones had issues with charging and turning on. I got them replaced. The new pair broke at the swivel on the left ear where it is glued. The headphones still work but the left ear cup won't stay place and is useless. BesyBuy told me to contact Sony for repair and Sony won't repair/replace it because they deem it physical damage. I sit at a desk all day and put them on and take them off and leave them on a stand. You would literally have to take a screw driver or something to break it where it broke. I am done with Sony and these stupid headphones. A lot of was spent on this and I basically wasted it on these headphones. I am dissatisfied and angry.

Please don't buy this product and this headphone headband (plastic) is not at all good and it won't last more than 3 months. I'm the serious buyer of SONY Products and I always go with this BRAND. Since my purchase is under the warranty of SONY (1 YEAR), but at the end, got a kind of frustration, invested 130$ but no use. Called the customer care of Best Buy and they redirected to me SONY Customer care and they again redirected me to UNITED RADIO Company; and at the end, they are asking minimum charge of 75$ for the base service charge to look into the headphone issue. Normal price after their incredible mark- up is 260.00 for these headphones I don't think their worth 50 bucks their for sure not worth anywhere close too 260 dollar's pesos maybe but not dollars. These are suposto connect automatically when you turn them on but I have to go to settings, go to Bluetooth paired devices and hit connect often several times and after dose not work I go back to my wired headphones and forget these exist. I payed 130.00 for these and feel Im owed about 100.00 back
