Customers express satisfaction with the Xperia XZ2's camera, praising its ability to take crystal clear pictures. The phone's battery life is also well-received, with users describing it as "top notch." While some find the design simple and clean, others criticize the phone for being slippery. The lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack is another point of contention among users.

Bought this phone... Using it for almost a year now... I have always been partial to Sony phone due to quality.... And am glad I went for it. I would have love it more assuming the y keep the audio jack like Samsung did on s8 instead of usbc... Its hard finding a headset that plugs directly into usbc with an adapter. Otherwise good product

I have had this phone for over a year now, and I must say that it is by far the best decision I've made. I have dropped this phone so many times and the screen still intact, and the inner works (System) it is still running as smoothly as it did the day tbat I purchased it.

Loved this phone. It's one of a kind and visually beautiful design. It may not have a lot of features as far s software is concerned but it runs smoothly. It's also very durable. The camera has amazing detail but don't expect great quality in dim lit areas.

Defective phone followed by awful customer support

I don't relish writing a one-star review. I've never written one before. But my experience has been so awful that it's only fair to warn people considering purchasing this phone. If you want the whole sordid story, you can read it here: https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-XZ2/Speaker-problem-followed-by-horrendous-customer-service/m-p/1335170 Here's the Reader's Digest Condensed version. My phone worked great for a couple months. Then the speaker on it malfunctioned; this is a known issue with XZ2 devices. I called phone support and sent it in for repair. The FedEx tracking number shows Sony received it over 3 weeks ago. After a week passed from them receiving it, I hadn't heard anything. This made me nervous, so I called phone support to see if they could check my repair status (Sony does not allow US consumers to see their repair status online). And then, I got caught in the customer service version of the Bermuda Triangle. Actually, I take that back...that's not fair to the Bermuda Triangle. I called customer support at least 6 times over the past 2 weeks. Each time I have gotten a different story. At first, it was that they had no record of ever receiving my phone and accused me of not using the shipping label they sent me. I showed them that I had used it, and they promised to contact me within 48 hours for the repair status. They did not. Several similar phone calls followed over the next two weeks. Each time, I was promised that I would receive a status update by email within 24 to 48 hours. Each time, they broke that promise. And each time, the explanation as to where my phone was and why I couldn't get it was different. I don't say this lightly, but the stories they gave me were so inconsistent, that I have to think they were lying at least some times. I tried chat support too and had similar experiences. It's been simply awful. I spent $800 on a phone and sent it to Sony for repair. They received it, but it seems to me they have lost it. And the customer service team has made no effort to make things right. I have used every available avenue to me to resolve this with Sony directly--phone and chat support plus online forum, asking to speak to supervisors, asking to put me in touch with the repair center directly, etc--and they apparently have no record of where my phone is and are unable to tell me when (if ever) I will get it back. I am going to be contacting my state attorney general and the BBB. But really the only way Sony will get the message is if people stop buying their phones until they improve their unfathomably bad customer service.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 marks my first return to Anrdoid since the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 release. I have used Android devices on and off for years and generally used Nexus or Pixel devices for the stock Android/Google experience. Samsung nearly broke me with the Note 8 and I had to take a break after that insanity. Let's get down to it then shall we: 1. Design: This is frankly the only area where I dock the phone serious points. The plastic and aluminum body feels very well built and the phone has some real heft. For as small as it feels it is clearly packing some serious density as it is much heavier than you might expect. The first thing I noticed was how slippery the phone felt in my hand. The curved plastic back provides no real grip on the phone and I always feel like I am going to drop it. This phone will definitely need a case for most people. Next was button placement. It is kind of hard to believe some of the design choices made in that area. The power button is on the right hand side in the MIDDLE with volume rocker above it and the camera shutter control below it. This coupled with the fingerprint sensor also in the near middle back of the phone just below the also middle located camera makes the ergonomics of picking up the phone very frustrating. Between always hitting the volume rocker to wake it up or tapping my finger on the camera I spent most of my time in real frustration with picking up the phone to use it. Sony should really take a look at the design again and rethink the plan for the next iteration. Even Samsung figured out these mistakes. 2. Display: Not much to say on this front aside from 'gorgeous'. It's bright, colorful, and has a high PPI. Yes it is LCD, but it offers as much color saturation as the Note 8's OLED display and it also supports HDR content. Sony also provides tuning options from sRGB calibrated to vivid to really make color pop. There was no backlight bleed of any kind and black levels were generally excellent. 3. Performance: It's fast. Really fast. Thanks to the Snapdragon 845 AnTuTu scored it at 257657. To put that into perspective my iPhone 8 Plus scored 218755. This should not be an area of concern despite the 4GB of RAM in this model. I had no issues with it whatsoever. 4. Connectivity/Call Quality: Wi-Fi speeds were generally good. I saw 189/177mbps on my gigabit internet via SpeedTest. This is pretty much in-line with my iPhone and probably indicates more of a throughput issue on my router than the phone itself. LTE speeds on T-Mobile were also in-line with my iPhone so don't expect it to suddenly set your hair on fire if you live in an area with connectivity/bandwidth issues. Call quality was great. Nothing special to report there. 5. Camera: This is another area the phone excels in. The software is fast, has a manual mode, dedictaed physical shutter button, and takes great pictures and video. It is easily as good if not besting my iPhone 8 Plus in a side-by-side comparison. This phone is one of the first on the market to capture 4K HDR video and it does not disappoint. No, it isn't going to be on the level of Hollywood HDR grading techniques, but for what it is it does provide better color and more natural looking image. The only mode I felt was a bit too gimmicky was the 960fps slow motion capture. Frankly, it could have been really neat, but the frame buffer fills up too fast and makes it nearly impossible to capture what you want. After about 10 tries with it I finally gave up and decided it wasn't worth the trouble. 6. Software: This is the one item that most Android phone makers really drop the ball in. As I stated previously, I am a firm believer in stock Android. The XZ2 gets close. Yes, Sony slaps some additions as was expected, but it isn't radical overkill like Samsung generally does with both cosmetics and duplicated apps. The phone comes with Oreo (8.0) pre-installed so that is as good as you can expect at the moment. What I don't know is what Sony's long term support looks like for Android. Only time will tell in that department. The only thing that truly bugged me was the inability to uninstall most of the pre-installed apps. They can be disabled, but not removed entirely. This includes apps like Facebook and Amazon. 7. Battery Life: Pretty exceptional. I easily made it through two days of moderate use before needing to recharge. It comes with a fast charger and also supports Qi wireless charging. As a reference it is actually marginally better than my iPhone 8 Plus in this department which is a first for me with an Android phone. 8. Miscellaneous: The phone has an SD card slot which is always a big win. The phone is also IP68 water resistant so that is also a plus. Speakers are OK, but definitely not a strong point. They'll do the job, but no one is doing serious listening with them. Last, but not least, there is no headphone jack. The phone comes with a USB-C to minijack dongle and USB-C headphones. Plan accordingly. Overall, Sony has built a winner with the Xperia XZ2. Yes it has some puzzling design issues, but if you can adjust to them I believe one will truly enjoy using the phone. For me it wasn't enough to make me switch from the iPhone though, but that's just me. My family is heavily entrenched in the Apple ecosystem so jumping overboard is very difficult. That is NOT a fault of the XZ2 though. If any phone could make me make the switch it would be this one.

Sony has already announced the XZ3, but this phone is for now still the flagship and acts like one. Excellent build quality, a lightly modified Android, and very few hiccups. Very satisfied. Only gripe would be the camera software that could be more intuitive.

PROS: -Beautiful welcomed change in design -Great display -Good camera, 4K HDR video is beautiful -3D camera features are fun -Battery life is top notch CONS: -Fingerprint reader placement -Dynamic Vibration System is gimmicky -Back scratches too easily -No headphone jack HARDWARE I was super excited to get my hands on this device since this marks the first major departure that Sony has made on it’s Xperia line in ages. Along with the redesign Sony has tested a whole breadth of new features. This device represents a complete departure from the squared off corners of Sony’s previous devices. The device features a rounded aluminum band all the way around the device. There is no denying the Xperia XZ2 is a beautiful device, but with it’s sweeping contours and 3D glass come a number of issues. Most notably the device is super slippery in your hand – after a week of use I have dropped the device multiple times and have decided that a case is necessary. Thankfully the screen and device itself has not suffered any damage except for numerous scratches on the back glass - so the fantastic Sony build quality is still here. The XZ2 features a fingerprint scanner and while it is fast, I find the placement to be way too low for my long fingers usually mistaking the camera lens which is the same size. As with recent smartphone trends there is no headphone jack, but Sony is nice to put a dongle in the box for you – the headphones they include are still the traditional in-ear buds so be sure and keep that dongle around if you plan on using them. The battery life for the device is what I would expect – lasting two days easily with average use. The screen on this device is not the highest resolution but this seems to help not drain the battery super fast. The screen itself is vivid and bright with good viewing angles and good daylight readability. There is a notification LED, which I like to see as an alternative to an always-on display. The audio from the phone is great too. Sony adds what they call their Dynamic Vibration System and I didn't feel like it added to my video experience and was honestly kind of distracting. It's an interesting idea, but in the end I left it turned off. Finally, wireless charging means it plays nicely with all the Qi pads my family already uses. Really glad they took advantage of the back glass to include this. CAMERA The camera is a 19 MP sensor and features what Sony is touting as the world’s first 4K HDR in a phone. I have to say that the video itself is beautiful, but I found that the camera while good was noisier compared to other leading devices. It also includes 960fps video, but honestly the resolution is almost too bad to make it useful. I would definitely recommend using it in direct sunlight and on objects that are at a distance for best results. Additionally, the 3D Creator app is an interesting inclusion and is quite fun to use. After following the tutorials I was able to produce some interesting models of my face and friends – I’d be curious to see how this software improves as it would be great to export higher quality models for 3D printing. SOFTWARE Sony does a good job of keeping the software tamed compared to many Android makers. The lack of bloatware and modifications to the stock Android experiences is refreshing to see and honestly makes using the phone on a daily basis that much more of a pleasure. CONCLUSION If your looking for an all around good phone and camera that’s great for video and don’t mind the exclusion of the headphone jack – this phone will fit the bill, but be ready to buy a case for it.

I was very happy Sony finally came out with a phone with a working fingerprint reader in the US. But no VOLTE/WiFi Calling on Tmobile breaks the deal for me. I did try the camera around the house, and the Mate 9 has a better camera. Overall another mediocre effort by Sony.
