Good cellphone alternative for younger kids

Unfortunately we live in a time where it is important to be able to get in touch with or locate your kids. Since most of us may not want our young ones using a cell phone this is a great alternative that doubles as a fitness tracker. The Spacetalk adventurer 4G is a very capable smart watch phone with GPS that will keep the kids and parents happy. The initial set-up did not take too long as you must first charge the watch. My biggest gripe with the watch occurred at this step. I feel as the magnetic charger does not dock strongly enough so it is very easy to knock the watch off the charger if you are not careful. Once the watch is fully charged you should download the spacetalk app and insert a nano sim into the back of the watch as shown in the quick set up guide. Once you install the nano sim card of your choice you should restart the watch to ensure a connection to the 4G network. I used the included jumpy sim card which operates on the ATT network since it is designed specifically for the watch. Once I was connected to the ATT network I received a prompt to update my firmware which lead me to my second issue with the watch. The watch overheated twice while attempting to download the firmware update and automatically placed the watch in Airplane mode. Once I cooled down the watch I was able to update the firmware and pair it with my phone via the spacetalk app. I'm happy to say that once the firmware update was completed I did not have any issues with the watch overheating. The Spacetalk app has many parenteral controls so you can locate your child and only allow them to be contacted by people on the approved list. I also liked that it has wrist detection so that you will be alerted if the watch is removed from your child's wrist. The watch also lets you create a geofence so that you are alerted if they leave or enter a specified area. You can also set up SOS alerts that can contact approved contacts or emergency services and provide your child's location. School mode can be activated while your child is at school so they are not distracted. The watch also doubles as a fitness tracker and camera so that your kids can take a few pictures during the day. Overall my experience with the watch has been positive and my son loves having his own "cell phone". Battery life easily lasts the whole day and it gives you the peace of mind that you can get in touch with your child since the phone is strapped to their wrist. The watch seems very durable with the gorilla glass and IP67 rating so it should be able to handle a few bumps during the course of the day. Even though I had a few hiccups during the initial set up my experience with the watch has been flawless since. I would recommend this product to my anyone looking for a cell phone alternative for their child.

At first I was rather apprehensive about getting my six year old their first cellular device. With so much bad out there it is hard to feel safe having your young child connected to the world. In comes the Spacetalk Adventurer 4G Kids Smart Watch! It does everything I would want a six year old to be able to do to stay connected and have a little fun, all while ensuring their safety by being connected to the app on the parents phone! Some of my favorite features of this are that it only allows calls or texts to numbers I ad in the app, and that my child is always on a GPS locator so I have peace of mind that they are where I left them for the day. The battery lasts all day, and the watch itself is very durable so it will withstand the bumps and falls a youngster will have happening constantly! The device itself works very well and the UI is very easy to use, my kid is better at it than I am! The parental app is very easy to use also, and setup is a total breeze. The monthly plan is extremely affordable so this device is accessible to a lot of people which is fantastic as well!

The watch comes well packaged with detailed setup documentation. It charges slow compared to the smartwatches I use, but the battery makes it through the day with no problem with my son wearing from the time he gets up until bedtime. The charger snaps onto the back without having to snap in to connector port. If you need to reach to Customer Service they are very responsive and helpful. I had no issues activating the included SIM card and you can pick from monthly, semi-annual or annual plans with no long-term commitment. The cover to get the SIM on the back of the phone can be a little tricky to get off, but is not big issue since you will probably only need to access once. The SIM card can be a little difficult on how to push into the SIM card cover properly, but once you figure it out it snaps back in fine. The power button is is the only physical button and is concealed well on the back, yet easily accessible. Using is very easy and the screen times out after a few seconds and will need to be double tapped to wake. My son is 9 years old and was able to start texting, calling and snapping pictures shortly after using. I only added five numbers approved to send and receive calls and it works because he received an unknown text that was blocked. You can setup geo safe zones to know when they arrive or leave. The watch also lets you know when the watch is put on, taking off and reminders can be set to charge. I like having the assurance that I know where my child is at all times and they can reach me and I can reach them anytime. Cellular service out of the box is through AT&T and I have had no issues. The watch is rather big but it looks cool on my son's wrist. The band secures the watch well but is a little difficult to get on a small wrist. This may get easier once my son learns how to put on themselves. If you are looking for an easy to use device for young children, this is a great option.

The Spacetalk Adventurer 4G Kids Smart Watch Phone and GPS is a neat device especially for my 8 and 10 year old, they like it besides the lack of apps or games you can use on it, which is ok with myself and my wife. The setup was easy, we chose to use the service they recommended and setup took about 30 minutes total. My 8 year old is tiny, so we have to put it on her upper arm and my 10 year old said it feels a little bulky but not too bad. They do love the way they can easily call my wife and I and we used it a lot at the race track this past weekend to easily find them around the pits. This was probably the absolute best feature or reason for owning one, quick and easy to find your kid when they are bopping around to other kids race trailers and campers, especially when there are thousands of people around. Yes, that sounds crazy, but guess what, ATV racing is all family, but now we just have easier access to finding them quickly. The apps are limited, I would love to have the ability to link this with Live 360 so I can have all my kids on one map as I have 4 daughters. I do not think this would be a hard request to add with Spacetalk, hopefully it is added at some point to make the watch that much more useful. We had to add the service that enabled features, I should have looked into that first, was not expecting more charges to utilize basic features of the smart watch as my other smart watches do not need this. I think this is a HUGE negative compared to just buying another name brand and just having the cell service added. Overall, the watch does what we need, is very useful, customer service is great and setup was easy, I could have easily did it without calling Spacetalk, but for non-techy people, the Spacetalk rep we delt with was super nice and easy to talk to, he also agreed with the Life 360 integration, he said it should be an option to use if you are already paying for the service. I like the app and is easy to use but having all on one map would be so much simpler for big families like mine. For the price, it is a great device, just needs some polishing with what is available and what integrations could help further their success into this market.

I may be a little bit old school, but from the day my child was born I have always said that I would not get a cell phone for them until they were able to drive. This may have just changed. I work in a profession in which I try and find missing children, especially endangered children. We have worked with technology in partnership with Project Life Saver, which allows us to listen for particular radio frequencies emitted by a bracelet worn by an at-risk youth. This is a good thought, however this only works if...a) the bracelet is charged, b) the child is wearing the bracelet, and c) you are within a few blocks of the device. Now a & b are both true for this Spacetalk Watch, however this is able to be countered with a companion app that allows parents to stay in the loop and know both the battery life of the watch, but also if your child takes the watch off. Probably the most valuable feature of this watch is the ability to use the GPS to know exactly where your child is, which will make a HUGE difference when attempting to locate a vulnerable child, and locate them quickly. First off, the build quality of this watch feels spot on. The watch feels solid, but yet is not heavy. This seems like a difficult balance to achieve, however Spacetalk nails it. Even though this device feels like it can take a punch, Spacetalk also includes a screen protector because as we all know...life happens. Setup of the watch is fairly simple. As with most other smart devices, you begin with downloading the appropriate app and creating an account. In this case, it is the appropriately named Spacetalk app. The app itself will walk you through setup and signing up for cell service, which is required. I was fortunate enough to be speaking with Spacetalk's Texas based customer support as I set up the watch and they are, BY FAR, the best customer service I have spoken with in a very long time. The representative walked me through the setup as if he was setting up a watch right beside me. He knew the entire process, how long each step should take, and was an absolute joy to work with. After getting the watch up and running, there is a little bit of a learning curve. I wore the watch for about 4 hours after setup to learn the ins and outs of the watch and app. Be warned, there is a little bit of a learning curve. Its not bad and you can learn as your child is using the watch. But here are the cliff notes: - You must add to the watch contacts anyone you want your child to be able to communicate with - The watch does not have the ability to use wifi, but does have bluetooth - Chat is only able to be used by people using the Spacetalk app, Messaging is like text messaging. - The Watch comes with Jumpy Service powered by AT&T, but can work with any provider. Customer service does not suggest using Verizon, as there have been issues - Set up safe zone geofences to be alerted if your child enters or leaves the zone After my 7 year old child using the watch I have a very positive opinion of the product. She has taken to the watch pretty well, possibly too well. I have set up 6 different contacts for her, and I am pretty sure that she calls each one of them at least twice a day. I have ran into a couple issues with the watch, however. Once when my daughter was wearing the watch and sitting on the couch under a blanket. After about 5 minutes, the watch became extremely hot and the watch gave an error stating that it overheated. We have replicated this situation and it has not happened again. Also the alerts for when my child removes the watch are spotty. I have received notifications that my daughter removed the watch from her wrist almost an hour after she actually took it off. I also wish that the geofences were able to be made smaller than their smallest setting as the smallest is essentially the size of my neighborhood. Overall, I really like the potential this watch has and the customer service you receive. Through firmware updates this watch has the ability to be an amazing product. It is a good product now, but in the future, I KNOW that it will be great.

The Spacetalk Adventurer 4G Kids Smart Watch Phone is great! I love that if need to, I can keep in contact with my child if we have to be apart. I did not want my seven year old to have a cell phone just yet. Setup was simple. You can use it on any carrier. It comes with an ATT sim card, but I chose to use T-Mobile. Their customer service will assist you in setting up the device if necessary. All of the contacts are added by a parent. You must download the App first to get going but it's pretty simple. The the school mode option is great. That makes sure that your child is not distracted while at school. My daughter is not too rough with toys, but I think that this wtach will last a few years. It has a camera, heart rate sensor, and GPS. Their are other applications as well. I truly think that this is a better option for younger kids that you feel need to be in contact with you. It takes out the negative thoughts of you kid on social media, or viewing content that they should be not be viewing. All in all. it is a great device, and I hope it lasts!

The Spacetalk Adventure smart watch is a large, robust watch with a few nice tricks that allows parents to keep in touch with and track the location of their kids, but it might not be great for all families. In my family's time using the watch, I found some joys and some frustrations. I think it'll be good for school, but so far we haven't been loving it for summer. Pros: • Location tracking is easy and useful • Phone calls are very simple and easy • Step tracking gets the kid moving • Spacetalk customer service is very helpful and provides assistance setting up and using the phone • School mode allows parents to block some or all functions to allow the kid to focus • Geofencing allows parents to get notifications if their kid leaves a defined area Cons: • The watch is very large, and the band fits my large adult wrist • The band is difficult for a kid to latch themselves • Setup is kind of a long process, and the watch can't be used on a typical inexpensive "watch" line; only the more expensive phone+data line • Doesn't work on Verizon (not a problem for me specifically, but important to know) • No way to set gender neutral pronouns; the app allows "male," "female," or "unspecified" • Whether or not gender is set in the app, all notifications include something like "Xxxxx has shared his/her location" which is not only inaccurate but also awfully binary • No way to lock the screen manually (power button is on the back of the watch body); after 15 seconds the screen dims, and 5 seconds later it locks by itself • No way to exit the fitness tracking screen unless you wait for the 20-second timeout. • No way for the kid to set contact photos Let's cover our experience with the watch: Upon first opening the package, I noticed how big the watch is. My kid doesn't say they mind the size very much, but I think there might be some subconscious bias about that, because they haven't been wearing the watch every day. The setup process was fairly long and involved with the included JumpySIM. I used the Spacetalk customer service hotline to guide me through the setup process, and I found the customer service agent friendly and thorough. It was through this process that I learned I can't just set the watch up on a $5/month watch-specific plan from my main carrier, T-Mobile, but would have to add a phone line. This is not ideal for my situation as a new Magenta Max line would cost quite a bit. I might stick with JumpySIM or find some other service that offers decent coverage for less than $18/month. My next frustration was with adding me kid's information to the watch. My kid is non-binary, and I was sad to see that the app allows only "male," "female," or "unspecified" as the gender options. In addition to that, all notification's about the kid's activity include the phrase "his/her," as in "Chris has shared his/her location with you." That's awfully binary. I think something should be done to allow for gender neutral identities and custom pronouns in the app and notifications for those who want that option. As I mentioned in the intro, we haven't been loving the watch for summer, but maybe it's our particular situation. My kid is regularly active, and they like using the step tracking function as a way to gamify that activity, but in general, they get kind of bored with it and haven't been wearing it every day. They stick close to home and haven't been in any summer camps, so maybe that's why we haven't been pushing its use too much. I think when school starts, we'll get more use out of it. I like that we have the option of disabling all apps or allowing specific ones to be accessed, and I like that we'll be able to get stay in touch with our kid during and after school if necessary. They'll be looking after a littler sibling after school this year, so location tracking, easy phone calls, and geofencing will be very helpful.

It took a little bit to setup and get working on my network. For ease of frustration and simple billing, I went to my network's store and had them set it up. Took about 30 minutes. The mobile "parent" app is a little clunky, but that's normal for these types of devices due to security and whatnot. Once everything was setup, it did take a little getting used to. Instead of tapping "X" in the top right, you generally pull down. Once you get used to that, it's actually a much nicer interface and my kid figured it out right away. My kid is 6 and we used this to keep track of him over the summer. It came in particularly handy at a mountain conference center our family vacations at every summer. He was able to run free and we always knew where he was. He could call us around lunch and we could go right to him. All the games and activities were a hit and really made this "sticky" so he didn't take it off. The battery life is as to be expected, and usually needs to be charged each night. It's very durable and comfortable for him to wear and use without us worrying about him breaking it. I think the main standout feature of this unit is probably the video chat and next is the auto-answer feature. After a couple rings, it answers automatically when I call him. I suspect those will come in handy once he starts getting into more trouble.

PROS: * Location-based notifications * "School mode" * No web browser * No games * Easy to use * Block calls/texts from unknown numbers * Parent app to customize all features CONS: * Proprietary watch bands == SETUP == Setting up the Spacetalk Adventurer is as simple as setting any other smartwatch. After installing the SIM card (I'm using T-Mobile) and powering on the watch, you'll go through the setup process in the parent app and will need to take a picture of a QR code that will be displayed on watch. Once paired, you will be able to customize the profile for your child. Just about anything you can think of, you have access to in the app. == SPACETALK APP == If I had to describe the app in a single word, it would be: amazing. The app gives you full control of the watch and helps you customize just about anything you can think of. The app is also how you can message your child (this is separate from text messaging). The major features that you can control are: - Contact list: your child will only be able to call/message people that YOU add through the app. Any of the contacts that you add can also be flagged as emergency contacts in the watch. You can also block any calls/texts from any number that isn't in your contact list. - Safe Zones: these are locations that your child frequents (home, school, church, relatives, etc) that you can add into the app. For example, I have my son's school added. You can set leave/arrive times, so if your kid doesn't arrive/leave at certain times, you'll receive a notification. - School Mode: while I love that I know where my child is and that they can message/call me whenever they need to, the watch could become quite distracting in class. Spacetalk lets you setup "school mode", which will disable several features (camera, alarms, calculator, weather, etc) during certain hours and days. - Fitness: just like any good smartwatch, the Spacewalk Adventurer helps track heart-rate and step count. It may not be as important as the other features, but my son still thinks it's neat to see how well he's doing and even tries to compete with this friends. == BOTTOM LINE == If you're considering getting your child a phone, but still don't think they're old enough for one just yet, this is an AMAZING alternative. There's no internet, no social media access, and no games. It's a smartwatch that can make and receive calls+messages, with great features any parent will appreciate. My only real complaint is that the watch bands are proprietary and Spacetalk's website only sells silicone bands.
