Great toy with a hefty price tag.

So lets get this out of the way first: this is a toy with a $150 price tag. The price may be too much to get past for some but this might be the most fun I've had with a Star Wars item since I was young. There are three modes that BB-8 can operate with. The mode I have used the least is the hologram projection. You record a message and using augmented reality (point your phone at BB-8 and it appears to project your message on the screen like R2 in past movies) which is a cool feature but I don't see myself using it often. You may show it off to people but the feature won't hold your attention. The last two modes are where the fun comes in. You can either have BB-8 roam on its own or control its adventure. In the patrol mode BB-8 will explore its surroundings and roam. If it encounters an obstacle it will redirect its course and continue on its way. Even though it doesn't have any sensors and the head piece doesn't give any data to the main body you will forget this isn't a real Droid. The head swivels around and gives of the impression that it is actually scanning the area and trying to figure out where to go. A friend of mine was convinced that it was looking around when it ran into our coffee table and stopped to change course. This is where the personality of the toy comes out and you start to believe it is a thinking toy. The app will give off noises and sounds to add to this. While I would have preferred the sounds came directly from BB-8 I don't mind that it comes from my phone. The last mode is you controlling BB-8 directly. While the controls are confusing at first I found myself easily getting it where I wanted to go and getting pretty good at controlling it within an hour. There are also controls to make BB-8 do preprogramed moves and others features you may see when using patrol mode. There are also voice commands, that aren't available on android at the time of this review, which add more moves to BB-8. I know some may see that lack of a feature out of the box as a negative but it gives me hope that BB-8 can be updated and we will see more cool features down the road. I have been using BB-8 on hardwood as well as short carpeting. You have more control on carpeting but more speed on a hard surface. I haven't had an issue with either but I imagine longer carpeting will not work great with this toy. In our home we also have two dogs and two cats who have been very curious with it and have enjoyed either chasing it or being chased by it. I know many people will complain about the size, especially with the price, but I have been happy with it. It is about the size of an orange and is perfect if you don't have a large home with lots of space to roam. Plus the smaller size makes it easier to take with you to show off to others. The head is held on magnetically and has only been knocked off by a kick from my dog and has yet to fall off by running into anything. The underside of the head will pick up dirt or other objects that collect on the main body which means it will have to be cleaned from time to time. I can't give this item five stars because it is a $150 item that is nothing more than an RC type toy. However, it is probably the most fun you will have with any Star Wars item you can buy. If you are thinking of picking this item up and have the money to spare I wouldn't hesitate. Seeing as how I am an adult and a working professional who loves it I can't imagine any kid that wouldn't as well.

I'm sure that by now everyone already knows about this cute little droid, so I wont bore you with the specifications about it. It's a lot of fun to roll around the house, or to just watch it roam around by itself (and bang into quite a few walls along the way). Somehow this little droid comes across as a real Star Wars droid come to life with how he interacts with everything around him. The app that controls BB-8 is put together well, and it's very easy to use for almost any age. I do like how the developers have made it so BB-8 can receive future updates to his software. This means there will be new things added to BB-8 every once in a while to give him new actions, sounds, etc. The fact that I now have BB-8 from the new Star Wars movie in my home is really neat, but the part that makes it great is that it moves and looks almost exactly like how the movie trailers show BB-8. Overall this is a great little droid, and I think that anyone who is a fan of Star Wars, or is just attracted by BB-8's cute looks should buy him. Even though it is a little pricey, it's worth it in my opinion.

This was an impulse buy while strolling the store so I did not see previous pictures for size comparison. I was quite shocked when i took it out of the box and the bb8 does not reach even HALF the height of the box. Lets start with pros -You can control a ball to roll around. I imagine it took a lot of engineering to do that. -It's durable. It's a plastic ball. Fairly hard to break. .....unfortunately that's about it. Cons -The bb8 itself has no sound function. All sounds will come from your phone/tab -bb8 itself has no voice recognition. You have to talk to the phone which transmits motion the the bobbing head. -The "holograph" function is just a silly app video. bb8 does NOT project anything. -BB8 cannot roll on regular carpet. EVEN VERY VERY short area rug will reduce his speed to barely moving... if at all. He will also occasionally get stuck in tile grooves. -His head constantly falls off. If working on wood floor, it's actually quite strong. The problem is that when he is supposed to move and can't move (ie carpet, tile grooves, bumping into wall, a shoe, people touching him). That causes the head "magnet" to no longer be on top and it will fly off. It won't break. You just have to pick it up and put it back on. Overall- this is a VERY VERY expensive remote control ball that doesn't really go, and with a button that makes the head bob up and down or spin side to side. The sounds coming from the phone and talking to the phone completely takes away the magic of interaction. I'm VERY surprised it had such good rating.

I picked up this App-Enabled BB-8 earlier this morning and I do like playing with it. If you can afford the $150 then it's worth considering, assuming they're not sold out by the time you are reading this review. The movement is smooth and well implemented. So far I've only tried it on carpet, it seems to work well there. Presumably it would be even quicker on a hard smooth surface like a hardwood floor. There is a "speed boost" mode that you can enable. Because it is not a flying toy, I seem to get much more runtime than a toy quadcopter. The app has some Star Wars music and is well done overall. There are some minor drawbacks which is why I only gave it 4 stars. Here are the drawbacks: * Price. $150 is a lot of money for a toy. The regular sphero does not have a head but comes with a few things that the BB-8 lacks. The regular sphero costs less. * The is not a printed manual. I really wish they would have included one. I had to look up on the website to find out some of the info. * If you run on carpet the top part (the head) can pick up lint particles. These can be cleaned off similar to how old computer mice wheels needed to be cleaned. * So far, the explore mode is not as "smart" as I would have liked. I need to experiment with this a bit more.

Read for Real Critical Adult Review

After playing with BB8 for a while, I believe this toy is definitely more geared towards adults of mature young children (12 and up?). The price point is spot on as it is quite sophisticated. The app allows you to do many things. You can free-drive it, put it on auto-patrol, put on voice recognition and tell it set commands, and even control how fast you'd like it to go at most. The patrol has some cool features on the screen such as internal temp., gyro stability, accelerator tracking, and mapping. Because it operates via blue-tooth, the range from the phone or Ipad is excellent. You don't have to do any real initial set-up to configure anything- just hold your device up to it. I also believe you can sync several devices to it or set it to pick-up only one. The charging base has to be plugged into your computer or anywhere a USB attaches to charge. It is powered by a Lithium battery, so the life is very nice and you never have to change it (unlike the Target one). The size of the actual BB8 is only about 4 inches tall with the ball base being about 3 inches in diameter. It's weight is about 3 lbs. and is put together quite solidly as it can take running into things and is even water resistant. It moved much better on hard, smooth surfaces (not sure about carpet) and should definitely not be taken outside! The handling is really, really nice. It stops very quickly when you let off the gas and can make turns very nicely when in motion. The packaging it comes in is very sleek and resembles that of an expensive Apple product or cell phone (so save it). It doesn't rock back and forth like the Target model, but does not make sounds out of the BB8 itself. That would be my only potential negative is the size (though definitely not a deal-breaker) and that the droid doesn't produce its own sounds (they are done through the device with the app). Overall, I am glad I bought this and don't think it'll be a fad.

I got very lucky finding this guy today. I went into my local store right when they opened and there were 3 on the shelf. I grabbed one and as I went to check out the other two were being purchased by the people behind me in line. -The package for BB-8 is very nice and it makes storing the droid easy if you want to keep it in the box or transport it. -The functionality is very cool. The second you place BB-8 on the induction charger he starts to look around and move his head which is funny to watch. -The app connection works well for mine and I have no issues connecting to the toy and controlling it. The toy moves great on hard surfaces and decent on short carpet. Once in a while BB-8 will need a little push to get him moving if your home is entirely carpet. -The tricks he can do are fun and the AR feature with the holograms works well, it also confuses my dog haha. My only gripe with this toy is the lack of an instruction manual. I am still uncertain on how to tell when BB-8 is fully charged or not. I checked the site but wasn't able to find anything, so I will have to further investigate. Overall this is a great toy with fun functionality. I grew up with My Pal 2 and now this generation of kids is growing up with BB-8. Worth every penny!

I am an old school geek. Star Wars is like air to me. I had all the cool figures and toys when I was a boy, and remember seeing the films in theaters. I thought, foolishly, that toys would never get better than the AT-AT play set from Kenner that I got for Christmas. I was wrong. BB-8 is my new favorite Star Wars toy of all time. First of all, it has heft. It isn't some little plastic racquetball. It has the size and weight of a cueball. Second, it has personality. It isn't a little robot that waddles around going "beep boop." Like its predecessor, R2-D2, has movements and sounds that give it a more amiable quality of character. Third, the UI is really cool. And, since it's an app, the firmware and controls are easily updatable, unlike many hardware controllers on the shelves. While I do realize that the $150 price tag is somewhat offputting, you are getting quality that is both portable and updatable. Tips: Give it a full three hour charge before your first activation. You'll know when it's done charging because the blue light on the base stops flashing. Also, make sure to update the firmware. Finally, talk to it. The more you interact with it, the more quickly it will respond to your commands.

I grew up loving the original Star Wars trilogy. I'm hoping the next is much better than the Jar Jar era. When I saw this droid online I had to have him. He rolls, he patrols, he does recorded holograms. Or so I thought. He does roll around, but he had trouble on even medium thick carpet and he got stuck a lot on my tile. You really need a very smooth floor and very low pile carpet to get the most out of this guy. Also, he gets turned around very easily. There is a light to orient which way is forward, but if you have even a minor collision or stop or turn too fast that orientation gets lost. Another issue I had is the patrol and hologram fall very short. The patrol doesn't actually map out the room or anything. He just rolls around in random directions until he hits something, usually causing his magnetically attached head to pop off. The hologram is just a trick on the iPhone. No camera or projection on this $150 toy. Instead you record a message on your phone and then watch the droid through your phone camera to see the playback. Once I started to have problems connecting my phone to the droid I decided it was time to send him back to the store while I still could. You may have a much better experience as long as you know where it falls short from the get go (I bought it on launch day), which is why I give it three stars. I'm not gonna hold out hope that someone else develops an app that does more than the manufacturers, as some do. Maybe I'll rebuy it then if it does happen. For now, it just wasn't worth the price tag for me. If it was a lower price point I might have kept it.

BB-8 is a great addition to the home, and we have had a lot of fun driving him around, and letting him explore. My animals are fascinated by him, and I have to watch them around the droid otherwise they think its another play toy for them. I haven't had any big issues, sometimes I just let bb-8 patrol around while I am doing my tasks and he's fun to watch. Took him with me a couple of times so people could also interact with him. You only get an hour of playtime before he needs charging, but that hour is tons of fun. Thicker carpet is an issue, and in the areas where we do have carpet he can only roll on the most walked areas at the highest speed setting so that is the only issue that we have come across. I have heard of people having issues with the app. but we have an iphone and haven't had trouble at all. I have had him about a month now, and he is getting better at not running into things, its just going to take some time. Just be warned he will grow on you if you don't love him already when he comes out of the box! Love hearing the opening music to star wars every time!! It is definitely worth every penny in my book!!!

I was very excited for this little robot but the commercials, in my opinion, were very misleading. First, all of the fun little sounds don't actually come from BB-8, they come from the device you have the app installed on. So that means if your phone\tablet isn't right near the little guy, the sounds don't really feel like they come from BB. Second, the app, which is central to EVERYTHING this thing does, is slow and over produced. The features are not intuitive and things like the "holographic projections" are nothing more than low quality augmented reality. Now, I knew it didn't actually project holograms but I didn't realize that literally all of the functionality for BB-8 was inside the app. Oh and the automated patrol mode is a joke. The thing rolls around, slamming into walls and furniture until it's head falls off. In the end, you are basically paying for an app. The robot itself is just a gyro that rolls around and uses magnets to keep the head on, nothing more. Fun toy for $50 but definitely not worth $150.

I purchased this little guy when Best Buy had a sale ($120) the day The Force Awakens came out to Blu-ray/DVD. I have been eyeing it for some time, and have been impressed with the quality of other Sphero products I have seen. It pretty much does what is advertised. Well constructed, and the app for controls is easy to use. Just be mindful of what surface it is on, due to the fact he was super fast on my hardwood floors, and I had to turn his sensitivity down. The animals love him as he rolls around the house, just be sure to check the small wheels under his head after you are done, since it can collect human or pet hair around the them, and can be a little tedious to clean out, regardless of how clean your floors are kept. I assume the rolling plastic material, combined with the magnet for the head to stay on, builds a very slight static charge since I have to also while his main body down due to it as well. The additions of him reacting to The Force Awakens was a nice touch as well. He went insane with excitement when he saw his buddy Po Dameron and we got a kick out of it. Charming little product, and I look forward to what other additions they plan to do with the software, as well as hoping they make a larger model down the road.

First the product description is incorrect, there is no power adapter included, just a USB to MicroUSB plug. Second, From all the reviews I had seen prior to the release, It was touted as programmable, similar to the Sphero 2 ball. Well it is not. While it shares all of the innards of a Sphero 2 ball, they have omitted the chip that allows the Sphero 2 to be programmable, so all you end up with is a glorified remote controlled ball. Third, every aspect of BB8 , from voice recognition to sounds, is controlled thru a buggy app that keeps crashing. If you have an Android device, half of the features advertised, such as voice recognition and holographic recordings are not available, they are listed as "future enhancements" in the app store. While this is a fun little toy, it is definitely not worth the $150 that Sphero is asking for it. Save yourself $70 and get the R/C BB8, at least with a physical remote there is no risk of it crashing and taking your phone with it.

I bought this for my daughter to have as a companion/pet. It is really neat. The main ball it super sturdy, made of thick plastic. You would have to hit this really hard to try and break it. The head unit is a little more fragile. You can control it manually with your smart device or you can let it explore and map an area on its own. It even has a special mode so when you watch the latest Star Wars it can interactive with the movie. The droid has a little of a personality of its own that makes it seem alive. For those whos like programming, there are other apps out there to program the little guy to do what you want it to do. I got the one for my daughter when it was on sale for around $100. It was definitately worth it. Everyone who sees it thinks its really neat and cute. Only thing I can say that is close to negative, is that the head unit's rollers get dirty from lint and dust really quick. You have to clean it quit often or the head does not move properly on the ball unit. Great little device/droid for any Star Wars fan or just anyone looking for a cute little pet/companion.

Cute little BB-8 remote controlled droid. Works with an app on a smartphone. I still have not tried the watch with BB-8 feature that let's the droid interact while the film is played. The cats love it. It is fun to play with, but how long can you really play with a remote controlled ball? Be aware that it picks up dust and random hairs on the floor so it gets dirty quickly and the hairs and dust get caught in the wheel tracks on the head piece. It is a bit difficult to control, and only works on smooth flat floors. It is very fragile, the wires on the head can easily get bent or broken off. I knew what it was before I bought it, and I am still happy with the purchase. Not for kids unless they are careful, and what kids are careful? It is very expensive for what it is, and I was hoping for more features. Again, still love it, and I do not regret buying it.

Going into buying this, I was just getting over a birthday of mine & wanted to buy something for me. So I started strolling through this website and came across this BB-8 Droid by Sphero. Bought it on an impulse. I love this little droid, but there really isn't much to it. You play with it, & it rolls around. The sounds it makes comes through the app on your phone; and the battery only lasts for about an hour, then you have to charge it for three hours to have a complete charge. Sphero promises that the droid will do more as time goes on. Realistically the droid is just a great paperweight until you have a case of Writer's Block and want to get some juices flowing...or maybe you just don't know if you want to play a game or watch a movie, so you turn BB-8 on and loose a good 15-30 minutes. It's a fun thing to lose time to, but other than that; there's not much to it. It has amazing technology in it, but until it can roam around my house freely or they make an extra headpiece for it that has a camera built in, this is just a good looking paperweight that you can play with. I'd recommend this as a buy, but only if you have the money to spend and aren't hurting. If not, wait for it to reach around $80 or so.

Got this on sale for Black Friday. Returned it because I found a cheaper one through Disney Movie Rewards for a handful of DMR points and $10 for shipping. All I can say is that I am disappointed I wasted the DMR points and the $10 on shipping. It's nothing more than a remote controlled ball. On wood floors it doesn't really even work that great. If you put him in explore mode, it'll just go around in a small circle and move the head around like it is looking at something. In the 20 minutes that I have played with it, BB-8's head has popped off more times than I can remember. It has also conveniently gotten trapped under my entertainment center in that time ...knocking his head off in the process. Don't waste your money on it, your kids will get bored with it fast and it'll be lost under their bed for the next few years. When they find it, it will be missing the head and the charger will be at the bottom of a box in storage somewhere.

I am a 47 year old woman and my husband got him for me. First let me start with: If you have too deep of pile of rug he will not work. Con: The BB-8 does not come with great instructions. You must have Wi-Fi and it must be a strong signal where you plan to use it. I can only sit in my PC room and I send him on his way from there. He does not project a hologram from his body, it is more of a recording you see on the phone or tablet screen. On his charger you may have to spin him around a bit until you see the light blink Pros: He is very durable. Good thing since my dogs like to chase him. Once you get him up and running it all seems to be smooth after that. Fairly easy to control. It is pretty cool. Worth the money.

Beware- No Speakers on the Droid!!

    Posted
    140385

WHY WOULD THE SOUND NOT COME FROM THE ROBOT??! Seriously, this has to be a design oversight- the sound comes from your phone speakers, not the droid (kinda defeats the purpose of having a decent range from the phone). I would also highly suggest adding an option to purchase a remote for those who don't want to control it with their phone. Might also be nice to offer a larger model for more money for those that want a larger scale version (maybe it could even have a tiny tray compartment like in the movie?)! Best things are the charging base and high quality details/feel. The controls navigate well and are precise, but again would like to see a remote control option that doesn't require use of a smartphone, even if it's an additionally purchased accessory created later. Great start, I can't wait to see what improvements Gen 2 will bring!! :)

Super well built, intriguing even. Bluetooth controlling app is fully Star Wars'ed-out in the best possible way with lots of BB-8 noise talk, character images and the like. When roaming about on patrol mode, BB-8 will keep rolling for about 3 hours on its lithium batteries. Inside the unit, 3 bright LEDs of white, blue and red allow you to both manually control the robot (blue), chat with him (white) or be told when it's time for recharging (red). The charger takes a standard micro USB cable (cable included, supply your own adapter). The charger also doubles as a display stand so you can hang with BB-8 on a desk with out him rolling into a trap. The head actually "floats" on the rolling body, kinda like in the film and articulates all over the place as BB-8 wanders about.

You like Star Wars remote control toys this one is for you I have read member review having to reconnect every time to use it so what name another rc toy you use your computer phone, tablet to control car, drone you will have to connect every time price may scare some people away from buying this but I had to buy mine at bed bath and beyond best buy, and GameStop where sold out them when I was looking for one but it is worth to see him turn,. Turning and steering is easy it's like driving car as long you follow it, be better if it had built in camera in it for you see where you are going from around corner, if you have friend to talk to message option can be fun to do with it first rc toy that is sphere to made into droid and move without wire attached to it. Best part no batteries required unlike cheaper and bigger version it have lithium battery. Bad thing when playing with it kills battery in tablet and computer phone fast so if playing with it recharge your device or keep it plugged in some people who have baby who can crawl may get more fun out it see how baby or animal react to it in action
