Customers frequently mention the Gesture Shell Back Office/Gaming Chair's exceptional comfort, ease of assembly, and high-quality build. The chair's reclining capabilities and adjustable lumbar support are also frequently praised. However, some customers note the chair's substantial weight and high price point as potential drawbacks. Overall, the positive feedback on comfort and build quality outweighs the concerns about weight and cost.

This is without hesitation my best office chair ever. The definition of ergonomic applied to this chair results in a super comfortable position during the more than 8 hours that I am sitting in the office. You can see that is designed to keep your back as much as possible in the right straight position, from the first to the last working hour.
Let’s start with the basic, very easy assembly from the box to the office, this cost me less than 15 minutes. The chair is made of quality components and is coming on the heavy side.
Following the instruction, the two controls, placed on the right of the chair are as intuitive as most office chairs. Two controls you can set up the height of your seat but most notably the resistance of your back and lumbar. I particularly love the four preset positions for the back, from full recline to the straight position.
Two elements are special in this chair, that I have never seen before:
.- The armrests in addition to regular adjustment in height and dept, are also adjusting side to side. Two advantages are the process of getting in and out of your chair without moving your chair too far from the desk. Additionally, it also help to put to rest your arms while using small devices like your phone or your tablet.
.- The quality of the chair and the modern design. In a quite basic office, the elegant desk and a classy designed chair make the difference.
Two additional elements are convincing when you consider the investment. One is the material used to support the regular daily use of your chair, a quality Upholstery on the seat and back. And a 12 years manufacturer guarantee that gives the sense of how resistant this will be.
Final disclaimer, I only used the chair for 2 weeks so I hope that those first impressions are resting for a long time. In the meantime, I recommend it.

PROS:
* Excellent build quality
* High weight capacity
* Lumbar support
* Seat depth adjustment
* Arm height AND angle adjustment
* Comfortable after several hours
CONS:
* Heavy
* Arm angle adjusts too easily
== SETUP ==
The box that this chair arrives in is both large AND heavy, so moving and assembly may be a two-person job.
That said, it couldn’t be easier to assemble. There are no assembly instructions (at least not in my box), but the chair arrives in 3 separate pieces: the base, the lift cylinder, and the main chair “body”.
I put the chair together by myself, and found that it was easiest to assemble by placing the chair body on its backside, attach the lift cylinder to the base, attach the cylinder and base to the underside of the chair body, and then carefully tilt the chair upright. If you have another person to help, I would just start with the base, attach the cylinder, and then place the chair body on top of the cylinder (with your helper guiding the chair body into position).
== BUILD QUALITY ==
Up until this point, I don’t think I’ve ever owned a desk chair that has survived more than three years. Of course, I usually buy cheap chairs, so I know to keep my expectations low. This Steelcase chair on the other hand, I would be *SHOCKED* if I’m not using 10 years from now.
Every part of this chair feels very sturdy and built to last. The rollers are solid and have two different textures on the wheels, the armrests are comfortable, the adjustable lumbar support is AMAZING, and the seat cushion (with adjustable positioning) is firm but comfy, even after several hours of sitting.
The only component that I could see failing at some point is the lift cylinder, but it is very easy to access if you ever need to replace it.
== FINAL THOUGHTS ==
If I had to complain about anything, it would be that it’s a very heavy chair (which is really only an issue when you first get it) and that the armrests can adjust their angle *too* easily (I keep hitting them with my elbow and changing their angle).
When going through what I need for a home office (desk, ergo mouse and keyboard, laptop vs desktop, monitor, etc.), I didn’t put too much thought into the chair. After going from something cheap that “will do”, to this Steelcase chair, I HIGHLY recommend trying it out at your local Best Buy if you can. How many hours a week are you sitting at your desk? Shouldn’t you be comfortable while working?

It's an expensive chair, but it well made, versatile, and comfortable for a range of body types. It comes in around 70 pounds, so getting to its location may take planning for some. It came in a study box with cutouts on the side for lifting. Once opened, there are three pieces to assemble. The bottom, heavy duty plastic with the wheels already installed, the piston for raising and lowering the seat, and the entire seat all assembled. The piston can only go in one way, so it’s easy to put together. I found it easiest to put the piston in the base, and then put it on its side and side the top of the piston into the chair, and then right the whole unit. With two people maybe one can guide the top onto the piston. Once that is done you have the guide to show you how to work the chair. It has a 12-year warranty and is rated for 400lbs.
The wheels glided easily over hardwood and some low shag carpet. The seat is wide and comfortable. All the controls are on the right side of the chair just under the seat. The depth can be moved back and forth by the knob on the side for leg/thigh support. The lumbar support is done by two tabs on the seat back. The chair can be reclined and stopped in various positions, and the effort to move the back can be adjusted too. Each arm has a button to raise and lower it, the tops slide in and out, and can be angled as needed. Height is adjusted by pulling up on a lever and removing or adding weight to get the desired position. This all gives you easy to control and adjust the chair to your needs. So, one person can adjust as they need and the next can readjust quickly.
It's not just about comfort for one, but I found it’s easy for others to quickly get comfortable as different body types use the chair. It has all day comfort as good as any work chair I’ve used. Want a quick change, just select a knob, change, and your set again. The fabric looked nice and feels good. This should last longer than cheaper chairs that only go a few years with constant use.

Great chair for your home office

If you are like me, you have been working from home since the beginning of the pandemic. If you haven't done so already, you should really upgrade your home office chair. This chair is a huge upgrade over the basic models you get at office supply stores.
The first thing to note about the chair, is that come shipped pre-assembled. This means the box is huge. I opened my front double doors to get it into my house. The chair is shipped in a very sturdy box, so there is no worry about it getting damaged in transit. Just take care when removing it from the box, since the chair is on the heavier side.
With Steelcase, you have the option to buy the Gesture with casters for hard floor or carpet. The model I have is for hard floor, and there really isn't a problem moving it around on carpet. I think the carpet casters will probably move easier but will slide too much on hard floor.
The chair has a few basic controls. The front knob has a lever to adjust the height, and the dial adjusts how far out the cushion is. The goal is to adjust the front cushion, so your knee is a few inches from the front. The back dial adjusts the tilt. It has tabs that adjust how far back the chair will tilt, and the dial adjust how much resistance is needed to push the chair back. Finally, the chair has two tabs in the back, that allow you to adjust the lumbar support.
The big differentiator with the Gesture is the arm rest controls. Not only can the arm rests go up and down, but they can also move to the side and be adjusted at different angles.
One thing to know about the chair is that does not have a tilt control for the seat cushion. If you are used to having the seat cushion tilted in a certain direction, it may take a little time to get used to.
Overall, the Gesture is a great chair and I can’t recommend it enough.

When the box got dropped off on my porch I was like wow, that's huge! Inside I found the chair was 90 percent of the way already assembled. All I had to do was install the base and pedestal, and flip it onto it's wheels. Let me tell you right off the bat though, this thing is heavy! It should probably be a 2 person lift. When I was installing the base, I noticed that the wheels don't turn super easily, they have a bit of grab to them. They do roll nice and smooth, but they're really tight. I wasn't sure how I felt about that until I sat down in the chair on my hard wood floor, and it stays put nicely and doesn't try to roll all over when I move around. Once I was sitting I was surprised at how comfortable the chair is. Kind of like a European sports car, it's both firm and supportive, yet nice and comfortable at the same time. After fiddling around with the knobs, dials, and lever on the side of the chair I quickly had it adjusted exactly how I wanted it. There is a knob to adjust the seat cushion forward or back, another that controls how far you can lean backwards, one that adjusts the tension of the back and makes it easier or more resistive to reclining. The arms offer almost an unlimited amount of adjustability up, down, in, out, forward or back, plus they can be adjusted to different inward or outward angles, both on the arms themselves, and the pads as well. I actually didn't know a desk chair could be so comfortable. I want another one now to use at work! I highly recommend this chair to everyone, as I'm confident you will be able to adjust it exactly to your liking.

Working from home for me entails sitting at my desk for a long time. And this finally prompted me to get a better chair that’ll support my posture and keep me comfortable. The Gesture office chair by Steelseries offered me all these, albeit in a high-end package.
Pros:
Easy to get comfortable with a variety of body sizes
Offers tons of adjustability. Once I was done with all the fiddling it was a fantastic to sit on it for hours and hours
Even though the back is not mesh, it does not get hot
Back support is really good and has adjustable lumbar support
The arms offer far more freedom of movement from what I have seen from other comparable chairs
Seat depth is adjustable. My previous chairs lacked this, but after using the Gesture I truly appreciate this adjustment
There’s standard pneumatic height adjustment along with recline lock. The recline tension can be adjusted as well
Very well made and assembly takes a few minutes
Cons:
Not the cheapest chair out there
Quite heavy
Correct floor casters are needed - the hard-floor casters are terrible on carpet
In summary, the Steelseries Gesture is a must-consider chair in the higher-end chair space. It’s not cheap, but the comfort level it delivers is superb. For me, it was a no-brainer.

RE Gesture. I was sent (one week early) an opened and retaped box with only the seat, chair back and wheels inside. It did not come from steel case directly, but from "Best Buy Returns" in Kentucky. I called Steelcase who said these "chairs come from Mexico, they are opened at the border." So insult to injury, our private information name, address AND phone are literally out there for whomever to read. Wonderful! Now I wait for an UPS return slip to come sometime in 8 days from now (per BB). I will check back to see if this horrible experience posts on BB...

This is definitely the most comfortable office chair that I have used. Assembly was quick and easy: peel off the wrapping, set the cylinder on the seat, set the base on the cylinder, and you are ready to go. The bottom is very well cushioned, and the back is also quite nice. I have only used relatively inexpensive chairs before, so the option to slide the seat bottom in and out was unique. It is not necessary for me, but this could be very useful for those with shorter legs. The arms are adjustable up, down, in, and out. I have never owned a chair with this amount of flexibility before, and it allows you to dial in your exact fit. The controls on the base allow you to move the chair up and down, slide the seat forward and back towards the seat back (mentioned before), control the amount of leaning back that you can do, and adjust the tension on leaning back. This chair is also unique in that the seat back itself reclines, but the bottom doesn't. Most chairs just pivot at the gas cylinder, but this pivots at the seat back. Not really good or bad, but just different.
The only down side is that the lumbar support is not that pronounced, and it does not have a way to lock it into place. However, it does not move around, so I guess that this is not really a problem. Also, the arm rests can slide back and forward, with no way to lock them to their supports. This is really the only annoying thing about this chair. But still, it is VERY comfortable and I love it.

I have never believed in investing in a great chair for the home office. But working from home continues and it was time for an upgrade. I don't really know 'chair' brands like I do most tech, but my neighbor told me Steelcase make incredible chairs and this would last me for many many years.
This Steelcase chair comes semi flat, with the chair, the gas-support pillar, and the wheel supports in the box. Assembly was easy, no tools required. Took about 10min but the instructions are not very clear. The chair is well built but everything is VERY heavy. So I built this by sitting the chair upside down on my bed but even then, you notice the weight of this thing.
Comfort wise, the Steelcase is a great chair. Height adjust, lumbar support, etc. but the bit I love the most is the armrests which is the last thing I expected to care about. The armrests are flat, wide, and have a height adjustment so that I can get them level to my desk. This means on my small home office desk, I can basically use the armrests to rest my lower arm while typing. The wheels roll smoothly, but I am using a plastic protector mat on a wooden floor so my experience may be better than yours.
One thing I would note about the Steelcase is while the back is comfortable, it's not high enough to support your neck/head. The BestBuy photo doesn't make it very clear, but I am taking off 1 star because it would be great if the back was higher so you were fully supported from the head/neck down. But outside of that, really do think the Steelcase is a great, comfortable chair and worth the investment.

The design and build quality of the chair is very good. The seat is very firm, but the arms are the most adjustable arms I've seen on an office chair. So if you have the ability to try the chair in person for a while I would recommend doing that since no chair will work for everyone.

Pro:
-Comfort and adjustability
-Can go really low for short people
Con:
-Headrest can’t be added
-Thin cushion
-Seat doesn’t tilt
Finding a chair that fits me well has been a challenge since I’m short and get pain around my tailbone after a short time. Even though I’m still getting used to it and still adjusting it often, so far this chair has eliminated most of the problems. I can sit in it for hours and not have pain, which is surprising given how thin the cushion is. At first glance it seems like it wouldn’t be that comfortable, but it’s really well supported.
The chair comes mostly pre-assembled and you only need to insert the chair into the base. The chair is quite heavy but rolls smoothly on hard surfaces. The material seems nice and durable. The cushions are thin but dense so it doesn’t feel flat.
Adjustability
The chair has many parts that can be adjusted freely without increments. The seat height can be adjusted from 16” to 21”. It’s great for someone short such as myself. The seat can also freely move forward and back by twisting the front knob, but can’t be tilted. The backrest can be tilted back at four increments from 90 degree to about 130 degree, with the tension adjustable with the second knob. The lumbar support can move up and down a few inches. The armrest can go up and down, and much lower than the typical office chair. It can also be rotated sideways while the arm pad can be pushed forward and back. It can’t be totally pushed out of the way but it’s very versatile.
Comfort
I’m still dialing in to get everything just right, but so far this chair fits my body well. The cushion seemed thin at first but it’s dense enough that I’m not hitting the bottom. It still feels thin and perhaps after long term use may become uncomfortable. Even at my height, the backrest fits the curvature of my back and gives it proper support. The lumbar may be a hit or miss for some. It’s a bar that slides up and down and I can really feel that it’s a thin bar. For me, the shoulder support is fine but if you’re taller then the backrest might be too low for proper support. The arm rest is great. Even at the highest, I can push the chair really close to my desk or I can have it low and out of the way.
Is it worth it?
Buying a chair at this price is an investment. It may not fit everyone’s body type, but so far for me, it has been comfortable. The least comfortable part is the cushion. It hasn’t been a problem yet, but I’ve only used it for a few days. The arm adjustment is the best thing about this chair. It’s so easy to freely adjust and I’m constantly doing it based on what I’m doing. The chair is very premium so it should last a long time. If it’s comfortable and lasts years, then it’s a worthy investment.

I am seeing steelcase desk accesories more and more. I was skeptical at first as to how good this office chair would be, but the amount of adjustment I can make in this chair is surprising The arms are fully adjustable, the seat can be adjusted forward or backward, you can adjust the amount of tension required to make the chair tilt back, adjust the height, and have different reclining stopping points. The chair can be adjusted in so many ways that I can easily game or work comfortably for 10+ hours. The wheels are extremely quiet when rolling and the chair is minimalistic and attractive. It doesn't scream GAMER CHAIR which is what I was expecting from a gaming brand. The chair itself is heavy, so while assembly is simple and is only 3 pieces, it can be difficult for some. All in all I like the ergonomics, the high quality materials, and the aesthetics of this office chair. I did not think I would like this chair as much as I do, but it is hard to deny the well thought out product that Steelcase has produced.

This chair has completely changed my work from home experience. Gone are the days of fighting that uncomfortable ache, that pain point, all causing you to shift around constantly in your office chair while you try to find the right position that you can stay in for more than a few minutes. The Steelcase Gesture is hands down the most ergonomic, comfortable chair I’ve used, especially when utilized for long periods of time. I’ve used a combination of different chairs over the last 2 years, memory foam, mesh, complimenting with gel pads, and more, and nothing beats true adjustability to fully support you while sitting for a length of time.
While managing the box is deceptively difficult due to the load not being evenly distributed, once I got the box inside, everything was a breeze from there. The chair effectively comes pre-assembled, you just have to take the chair base (with wheels already attached), place the pneumatic cylinder into the base, and set the chair on top of that. It takes about 60 seconds. The build quality and finish are very solid. The chair feels very sturdy, stable, and makes me understand why Steelcase warranties this chair for 12 years. This chair won’t break like those cheap office chairs.
It takes a little bit of a learning curve to understand the controls, but once you start fiddling with them, it’s pretty easy to get things adjusted. Quickly reviewing, the front knob/lever adjusts height using the lever portion, and the seat forward/backward using the twist function of the knob. The backrest recline tension adjusts using the twist function of the rearward knob, and you can lock the recline function to a max level using that knob as well. The lumbar also had adjustment sliders to find the perfect spot for the lumbar. Finally the arms are crazy adjustable: they lift, swivel, slide, and rotate. I don’t think there’s an adjustment you can’t do to the armrests. After you start getting some seat time in this chair, you’ll find you’re adjusting things to get the chair just right, and then you don’t have to adjust from there. You settle right into the chair and sit in pain-free comfort.
Overall, while I understand this chair is certainly demanding a premium and is more expensive than most desk/office chairs, it really comes down to what you’re using the chair for. If you’re using a desk chair for a couple hours a week, a simple standard desk chair will be sufficient, and this chair would probably be overkill. However, if you’re working from home 8+ hours a day, streaming, or doing something that requires you to spend a ton of hours sitting in a desk chair, buy a chair that will be supportive of you. If you’re spending 50% of the time you’re awake in an office chair, buy a high quality desk chair. I apply the same concept to my bed, I spend about 1/3 of my life in one of those, I opted for a quality mattress. Why not do the same and keep yourself from distracting your focus, killing your productivity, all because you can’t get comfortable in your desk chair?

The Steelcase - Gesture Shell Back Office Chair is a very nice high-end office chair that really has me wondering why I hadn’t invested in something like this sooner. I work a pretty standard 9 to 5 office job where the majority of my time is spent sitting in front of a computer. Up to this point, I have mainly used cheaper hand-me-down office chairs for many years now, and this has taken its toll on my body.
This has been my first experience with a truly high-end office chair and the difference compared to what I am accustomed to is staggering. This Steelcase chair has so many adjustment options yet it is so simple to make whatever adjustments you may need to make to get the chair just right for you and your situation.
As I typically do whenever I receive and open a new product, I first looked for some sort of instruction manual when unboxing the chair. To my initial surprise, no such document came with the chair, but it didn’t take me long to figure out why. Assembling the chair was very easy to figure out since most of the assembly was already done. All I had to do was place the pneumatic cylinder in the wheelbase and then line up the upper portion of the chair and place it on top of the pneumatic cylinder. The chair is pretty heavy but I was able to lift it and with the help of someone else who lined up the cylinder with the point where it is inserted into the bottom of the chair, I had it setup very quickly.
After assembling the chair, it was then easy to figure out what each of the adjustment knobs did and I really liked how smooth it felt when making any of the available adjustments.
One of my favorite things about this chair is the wide range of adjustments that can be made to the arm rests. This is often one of the hardest things to get exactly right on most chairs because of the limits most regular office chairs have when it comes to adjusting the arm rests. This is certainly not the case with this Steelcase office chair and now I have a chair with arm rests that are in the absolute perfect position for me and my needs.
Overall, the Steelcase - Gesture Shell Back Office Chair is an amazing high-end office chair and I highly recommend it!
