A decent chair, but not for larger users.

The Steelcase Series 1 is the entry level of Steelcase’s office and task chair. Setup is incredibly easy - it takes at most 5 minutes from a closed box to an assembled chair. No tools required, just put the lift cylinder in the wheeled base, set the seat base and back assembly on that, and snap on the seat cushion. Boom done. The chair is quite adjustable for an entry level offering, with arm rest height, position, and angle all adjustable, along with seat cushion position, chair height, and a locking tilt. Their is also a lumbar band that can be adjusted on the mesh seat back. Overall, the chair is…small. It’s really small. I’m a taller person and it’s just too small. As a task chair or office furniture in the right settings it is fine, but for long duration use it is just small. This is not a gamer chair or an all day home office chair unless you are a smaller person. Additionally, the casters have a lot of resistance and don’t turn easily when no one is in the seat and it is being moved from place to place. For the price, you can find larger chairs that are more suitable for longer use or taller people. For adjustability and ease of assembly this chair is good, and it seems solidly built and durable. I just can’t get over how small the chair is, so larger users or those needing more back support this is not the option for you.

As far as mid-back chairs go, this one is quite comfortable. Setup was quick and easy. I had the chair unboxed and fully assembled in about five minutes. The chair is well constructed and offers lots of options for "tweaking" it to your personal comfort. The chair height can be adjusted (of course), the seat depth can be adjusted, the arm height can be adjusted, the tops of the arms can be moved and swiveled to your personal taste, and the lumbar support can be adjusted. My only complaint about the adjustment options is the tops of the arms. While you can move them in or out, and you can angle them to your heart's content, you can't lock them into position. I constantly found myself shifting them out of position by accident. This was a little annoying. I'm also not keen on the chair's color. In person, it's a light grey and a VERY light grey. I prefer darker finishes as they don't show wear quite so easily. I'll be curious to see how this chair looks in another year or two. Despite the chair's claims that it slides easily on both hard floors and carpeting, I found the casters to be fairly stiff and unmoving on carpeting. Despite these issues, the chair itself is quite comfortable. I'm working from home now, and I can easily sit my entire shift without discomfort in this chair. It's a definite step up from the task chair that I had been using.

    Best I have owned

This chair is easily one of if not the best I have ever owned. It starts coming out of the box. I had all my tools ready: screwdriver and bits, Allen wrenches, cups for screws and an assortment of wrenches. You know how these things are, the tools they give you will work but they don't do the job well. I was prepared! So i open the box and get everything out. "Great! They did not pack the hardware. Wait, the base is already together. Let me look at the instructions." Literally the build consists of: Put base on floor Insert the shock Put the upper section on shock/base assembly. Slide seat into groves Enjoy No screws, nuts, misaligned holes, rubber hole covers...none of it. Just a few clicks and done. I had the chair together in 5 minutes, most of which was opening the box. There are three settings for the reclining: locked, tension and freefall (how I feel with no resistance when reclining) The chair raises and lowers like it is on a cloud. The arms adjust however you need for comfort. Up, down, in, out and rotating in and out. The seat slides in and out to allow a correct depth. There is a lumbar adjustment, that could probably be done better but does the job. The wheels are a bit tight, but you don't want to feel like you are on a skate board when you are working. The seat cushion is comfortable and the mesh back prevents back sweat, The warranty on the chair is outstanding. Like I said, best chair I have owned. And it looks like it will last a long time.
