Got my son hooked on vidya games. Not sure if...

well, it was bound to happen. The kids got into Nintendo. Previously, my son played Lego City on XBOX & would watch me play some Forza. On occasion I'd pull out the PS3 and play some Marvel vs Capcom... but I decided he was ready for Mario, Animal Crossing, and Zelda and HO BOY what a rabbit hole we fell into. Since then we've gotten the other Mario Switch games (Maker 2, Paper, 3D All-Stars, etc)... gotten into ROMs, custom Flash games... I suppose cosplay & mushroom-induced hallucinations inside a labyrinth of pipes & toadstools is the logical next step. Anyway, this game is PERFECT: the controls, the music, the gameplay. Previous Mario 3D games seem so janky compared to this, or maybe I'm just bad at old Mario 3D games. Odyssey is one of the greatest games I've ever played, and it made my son appreciate Nintendo as one of our civilizations' greatest brands in human history (I'm not exaggerating. Think about it. Sony, Xbox, all good too, but Nintendo is NINTENDO, man).

    Platforming Perfection

There's a lot to love about Super Mario Odyssey. The gameplay, controls, challenges, and visuals are top notch. The story is typical for a modern Mario game, but that's not why we play them. From the moment the opening cutscene ended and I had control of Mario, instinct took over. Running, jumping, triple jumps, wall jumps, slides. All the moves were there, and I didn't even need to think about them. But as is standard for Mario games, quick tutorials abound. By the time you work your way through the "tutorial" stage, you've been introduced to all the basic moves. In addition to the classic moves, Mario gets several new tricks in this game, including the ability to take control of certain enemies to get around the stages. As you encounter new challenges, tips pop up. Speaking of challenges, there is a nice mix. Some of them are super easy, some of them are head scratchers, and some are only accessible once the story has been completed. There has been a complaint that some of the "challenges" were just giveaways for taking the logical path. I don't have a problem with this at all. Perhaps the game is a bit generous with the rewards, but it is great for people who just want to complete the main game and don't really have the interest (or the time) to find every secret. It's not overly complicated to get enough "moons" to unlock the next world or stage. Additionally, because of the mobile nature of the switch, having a lot of quick challenges is great for when you only have a few minutes of play time. It's possible to complete a challenge during a 15 minute bus or train ride. This also is great for someone like myself, who might only have 30 minutes of game time between other family responsibilities. I feel like I am making real progress even in short gaming sessions. If you're a fan of Mario games or haven't played one since the N64, Super Mario Odyssey won't disappoint.

This game was a giant nostalgic punch in the face! I mean that in all the best ways possible! Many things in this game serve as a giant love letter to old Nintendo fans, especially those that played Mario 64. The game has lots of well thought out worlds, and plenty of challenging moons to collect. This is easily one of the best games on the Switch and I highly recommend it to everyone! This game is worth the switch alone!

I am so impressed with Mario Odyssey. It is so well made - graphics, storyline, etc. it’s also challenging and interesting enough for adults, but it can also be easy enough for my 7 year old son to learn and play! I grew up with the old Nintendo systems so this 3D animation is just amazing!

This game can be very challenging but it’s definitely a fun game to play. The puzzles are fun to figure out and platforming is still there like the traditional Mario games. The scenery and graphics to each world are very creative.

This game is out of this world (literally as well) and you shouldn't pass it up. I place it up with Breath of the Wild in terms of eye-catching, immersive games that you can't just put down. Cappy brings a fun new mechanism into the game and the graphics are beautiful as always. There are so many kingdoms to visit and Nintendo encourages it - you'll find tons of secrets lying around for those willing to explore to the fullest.

Nintendo is killing it this year. Great game for kids and adults alike. The controls are perfect for those who want to chain together more difficult and complex moves, or those who just want an easy-going gameplay experience. I can play next to my 5 year old son, and both of us get a similar level of challenge and satisfaction. Looks great in docked on 1080p, upscaled to 4k, and in handheld. 10/10 game of the year contender.

This is the closest we have been to Super Mario 64, since the Nintendo 64 launched. The open feeling, the exploration, the collectibles all line up most closely with that previous entry. I'd say the platforming is as crisp and enjoyable as 3D Land on the 3DS. It is a superior Mario title, one of the best in years, making it a superior video game period. Great for all ages, great for Switch owners, and great for the industry.

What can I say about this game that hasn't been said already? It's an amazingly beautiful game to look at, easy to learn and understand, but there is so much to explore and collect. Mario is always transforming into something new so the game never gets old. Once you beat it, the fun just started as you can go back and find all sorts of collectibles and coins, etc. It's a great game, I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could!

If you own a switch and don’t own this game, do yourself a favor, stop reading this and click buy. Mario Odyssey had me smiling the entire time I played from the moment I turned it on to the moment I beat it. It is beautifully designed and plays homage to Mario games of the past. Think of it as Mario 64 for a modern age but that doesn’t even do it justice. This game is a must own and worth buying a switch for.

Odyssey is a fun game and still finds a way to do new things with Mario in his search for Princess Peach. The worlds are different and offer challenges throughout them. The boss battles are entertaining. The game looks great and being able to throw you hat or take control of other characters is another fun aspect. Overall a real fun game.

If you loved Super Mario 64, you will have a great time with Odyssey. You can play solo or with a friend! Yes, 2-player adventure! My sister and I played the heck out of this game and had the most fun trying to solve puzzles on each kingdom to get as many moons as we could. I absolutely missed the good old super mario world and 64 days and odyssey has truly made me feel nolstagic. Pick it up if you're a mario fan!

I've found past 3D Mario games to be frustrating because I always felt like managing their cameras was more difficult than the gameplay itself. Super Mario Odyssey plays as smoothly as one would expect for a modern 3D platformer, which by itself puts it at the top of the 3D Mario pack. However, I just didn't feel like there was much of a challenge to it. I'm by no means a "hardcore gamer" when it comes to platformers; my skills are average at best. But I blew through this game very quickly and haven't felt particularly compelled to return to it for the extra collectibles and what not that I missed the first time around. It's a great game for younger kids who might be getting their first Mario experience, but somewhat lacking for adult gamers.

Don't know where to start, this game is phenomenal. An open world feel with lots of exploration to pass the time. Great story line with all the memorable characters one expects to meet in a Mario game. Add amiibo and the ride gets that much better. Definitely a nuance in modern gaming with a splash of just enough nostalgia to tug at any diehard Mario fanboy or girls heart. 10/10 for me and I'm sure for you too.

One of my favorite Nintendo Switch games and probably one of the best games on the Switch. This game is for everyone including kids and adults. I had a lot of fun playing through the game to the ending, and there is still a lot more to do with collecting moons and just overall exploring. Highly recommended.
