My Review of SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE (1978)

I love this movie! A childhood classic! Got it on a GREAT sale, "20% off for 2 or more Movies & Shows", got it a long with a 4K copy of Man of Steel (2013), and both came great! The best part about getting this Cinematic Masterpiece was having to receive it with a Slipcover & came with the 80 Years sticker on the Slipcover. In terms of the 4K transfer, if you like grain in classic movies, this film definitely has it. But, that is okay, because this movie looks great with the grain. Also, there is some mild bonus material on the Blu-Ray, but that's okay, I guess. Overall, still a 5/5 for me with the film especially. If you do not have this movie in your 4K collection, then YES, it's worth having!

I've personally been waiting for this comprehensive version of the movie to be released in Blu-Ray or 4K. Having it in Blu-Ray is a good start. This version of Superman the Movie includes much of the footage that you would have seen in the made for TV version of the film. Much like the Godfather back in the late 70's and 80's these movies would be adapted for television often times adding additional scenes that were left out and premiering the movie which would often span 3-4 hours to accommodate the content. The scenes especially toward the end where it shows Lex Luthor's devious and maniacal nature not only against Superman but toward his own team were great to see return in their continuity. This is a must have version for those who love this movie. One of the best super hero films ever adapted. With direction by Richard Donner and script by the legendary Maroi Puzo, this film truly lives up the epic nature that so many current films of this genre have lost sight of.

Very much rooted in classic Americana, Superman: The Movie reflects a past of simple nostalgia from its brassy score, soft focus/norman rockwell cinematography, and the endearing (and slightly corny) performances. The movie doesn't really have a strong narrative, and personally the portrayal of Lex Luthor isn't my favorite, but it's Christopher Reeve as Superman, and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane that make this movie something truly special. And just to say this for any current Superman film fans reading this, Reeve and Cavill are both Superman to me. This is a required purchase for anyone who is a film fan, for anyone who is a superhero fan in order to explore the early years of the genre.

While "the directors cut" is fairly pointless to me, having the original ABC MOVIE OF THE WEEK 2 night version fo the first film with lots endless extended scenes to fit across 2 nights is just jaw dropping. A perfect compliment tot he theatrical cut! Highly recommended!

This is my favorite Superman movie of all time, no matter what people say. None of the others, remakes, sequels, or what have you versions has had the same affect on me as the original 1978 theatrical version of Superman: The Movie. It has heart & soul, It has the right amount of humor not over the top, perfect memorable music, but most importantly, it is uplifting. This movie left me feeling so good that it has stayed with me all my life. This 4K version is the best I seen so far. It's an old movie so the print looks a little worn out at times but for the most part it is sharp and filmic. I'm glad that Warner Bros. released the original theatrical cut. My prayers were answered.

I wasn't expecting much from this release, given some of the reviews I read online, but I was pleasantly surprised by this 4K disc! The advantage of film cameras (as opposed to digital cameras) shines with this pleasant visual presentation, with details such as the weaves of Superman's suit and the pores of his skin being much clearer in 4K. The HDR grading makes the classic film pop more, with the blues and reds of Superman standing out more than before (while still preserving a classic look). The Dolby Atmos track is held back by the older tech but height effects do occur in the title sequence and various action bits. If you love Christopher Reeve's Superman, definitely pick this up!

This is not a review of the movie but rather a personal review of the 4k restoration. When Superman: The Movie was first made the green screen technology did not exist to correct the shift in colors. Hence, Superman's costume varied through the movie. For the 4k restoration Donner painstakingly supervised the color correcting of the problem areas and enhanced the audio. This is the best Superman has ever looked or sound. While the image is slightly sharper, it retains the soft film grain look of all previous formats.

Growing up this was always my favorite superhero movie, and my personal hero. "a friend" as Christopher reeve self described himself. Modern Superman movies are too dark and gritty; this is an all time classic. the 4K is immaculate and an amazing presentation!

Superman the movie is a timeless superhero film for fans young and old. Not only this DVD has a special edition disc that shows 2 hours and 7 min, but the second disc has the extended cut that is the 3-hour long tv version that has not been seen since it was aired on ABC tv as a two-night event. This is without a doubt a must-have collector item for superhero fans. If you want more the special edition disc has extras featuring commentary by Director Richard Donner and 3 Documentaries. Starring Christopher Reeve as The Man of Steel, Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, And Margot Kidder as Lois Lane. Since 1978 Superman the Movie has stood the test of time, and after all these years this film will still make you believe a man can fly!

While not a major improvement over the previous blu ray releases, this is still worth picking up, especially if you don't already have this in your collection. The uptick in detail is noticeable, and the HDR is more restrained than one might expect, but is faithful to the source material. Be aware that the picture will look soft in places, and there is noticeable grain--these aren't necessarily bad things, people. There are a lot of practical/optical effects, which include rear projection screens, so this is very much how the picture originally appeared.

This film remains my favorite superhero flick -- The Dark Knight is my second favorite. I remember seeing the film in the late 70's with my father & brother. Such a massive production, helmed by the legendary Richard Donner. Such a great cast: Christopher Reeve, Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Ned Beatty, Margo Kidder, etc. Everyone is perfect! Cannot forget the memorable score by John Williams!!! It's a fun and incredible film with a lot of heart...and no CGI :) I envy people who see this film for the first time. It's a classic and a treat. -Movie Nerd

Taking into consideration this movie is more than 40 years old, the 4 K transfer adds a few details I hadn’t noted before. As any other old movie there will be some grain that will be hard to take off, but this just brings character to the movie. The Smallville scene is the only scene that seemed to be too bright. The Atmos track is pretty well done and brings out the score like you have never heard it before. The scene of Krypton’s destruction is what I fiund to be the most enjoyable Atmos part in the movie.

If your favorite Superman film is the 1977 version then this is the set to get! You could get the 4k version but you wouldn't get the 3+ hour version too. It is Mono but it definitely gives you everything since the Special Edition has so many bonus features on top of the longer running time. The video and audio on Superman the Movie is about the best to expect on Blu-ray.

At a time when Superhero movies and dystopian futures were unheard of (like movie actors becoming politicians), this is the THE FIRST, THE BEST, THE ORIGINAL, SUPERMAN-THE MOVIE! No one thought it could be done but history has proved otherwise. Truly the best incarnation of Superman with the immortal Christopher Reeve! Beautifully restored and remastered with Dolby Vision and a Dolby Atmos soundtrack, 4K DIGITAL TO BOOT (Red Boot :-)), the complete package is thoroughly enjoyable and Highly Recommended!!!

Just before the destruction of the planet Krypton, scientist Jor-El (Marlon Brando) sends his infant son Kal-El on a spaceship to Earth. Raised by kindly farmers Jonathan (Glenn Ford) and Martha Kent (Phyllis Thaxter), young Clark (Christopher Reeve) discovers the source of his superhuman powers and moves to Metropolis to fight evil. As Superman, he battles the villainous Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman), while, as novice reporter Clark Kent, he attempts to woo co-worker Lois Lane (Margot Kidder).

I owned this set on DVD. While it did look good at the time, it was time to upgrade to the Blu-ray version. While the special visual effects don't quite hold up as well as modern green screened features, it is one of those movies that you have to enjoy for what it is. I think great work was done to bring all of the extra footage together & have it mesh so well with the the theatrical version. Of course there was not much the could do with the Special Edition, sound-wise, since it was primarily a TV release with low quality playback in those late 70's. I enjoyed the first 2 movies, especially the Richard Donner cut of Superman II. The rest of the series were stinkers.

Two Disc collection of the original Superman Movie. Original theatrical version plus a second version that shows most of the film that was deleted to make the two hour theatre requirement. The extended version was originally put together for a two night TV Superman Special. This is a must for Superman fans.

This is the best that Superman: The Movie has ever looked on home video. The picture quality is outstanding for a movie of this age. The producers of Superman: The Movie understood the character and is wonderfully portrayed by Christopher Reeve. Lossy Dolby audio is chosen by default. Switch to lossless Dolby Atmos which sounds much better. If your sound system does not support Dolby Atmos, it will play the Dolby True core audio.
