Customers regard the Surface Pro X's 16GB RAM as blazing fast and more than sufficient for most users, praising its lightweight design and ease of use. The vibrant screen quality also receives high marks, while the 4G LTE capability is seen as a significant advantage for convenient connectivity. However, some users express reservations about the trackpad's sensitivity and clicking mechanism.

I’ve waited nearly a month to write this review simply because I wanted to make sure my love for this machine was actual love and not infatuation. The latter is a legitimate concern because when you first set your eyes on this screen, you probably won’t believe you’re looking at a Microsoft design. To be frank, I went into Best Buy with the intention on buying a Surface Pro 7 to replace a Surface Pro 6 that I was passing on to a co-worker. At the time, I didn’t know anything about the SQ1 processor or even what an ARM64 processor was. After doing a bit of on-the-spot research, I decided to take a gamble and buy it. I was extremely nervous about the potential application limitations (i.e. no 64-bit support and the potential for performance issues during 32-bit emulation), but after using it for about a week, I quickly realized these concerns were largely overblown for my usage.
My typical day involves a lot of browser work, (I use Chromium Edge Canary, currently in beta release on the Microsoft Insiders Channel), lots of Microsoft Outlook, complex Excel spreadsheets, some Adobe Acrobat and occasional Tableau. Of those applications, only Chromium Edge is natively built for the ARM64 processor, yet I have not experienced any significant performance issues emulating the rest of the 32-bit applications. If you’re reading this and don’t understand what that means (first of all, don’t feel bad, neither did I until I researched ARM processors), it simply means that when it runs on your PC, there’s essentially an extra step that’s performed so the application can run on your system, which can use more resources.
In terms of applications that don’t work on the X, I won’t regurgitate any lists that can be readily Googled, but I’ll share what hasn’t worked for me. At my work, there are a slew of HP desktop all-in-one printers that are all connected with WiFi. The Surface Pro X was able to recognize all of these without issue, but when I tried to connect to my Ricoh IM C4500, it wasn’t recognized and the print drivers from Ricoh were not compatible. Fortunately, I was able to manually add it via an IP address. There was also one other proprietary software developed by my company that was not compatible. That’s it. Some other reviewers (incorrectly) said that the Pro X will not run third-party applications. This is 100% false. Most 32-bit applications and all ARM64 applications will absolutely run, whether it’s from the Microsoft Store or not.
Originally, I bought the 8GB RAM / 256 GB SSD version, but after reading about Adobe’s plans to eventually release their Creative Cloud suite of apps with compatibility for ARM as well as Microsoft’s suggestion that 64-bit emulation could possible be available in the (likely far) future, I decided to return that version of the X for the 16 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD to future-proof my purchase a bit. Please note, I did NOT experience any significant lag with the 8GB of RAM, but the 16 GB version is blazing FAST.
In terms of other miscellaneous notes, the addition of the USB-C port has been extremely convenient for me, since I also have a 2019 MacBook Pro. As a result, I bought an HP G5 USB-C dock, which is compatible with both computers. The re-designed Surface Type Cover with the Slim Pen charging port is also one of the most thoughtful designs in tech accessories that I have seen in a long timeNo more worrying about charging the pen separately, simply store it and go and when you go to use it again, it’s fully charged. This efficiency reminds me of the Apple Airpods. I still don’t love the feel/sound of clicking on the trackpad, but you can get around this by tapping instead of clicking, saving the noise.
All in all, I can’t put my finger on exactly why the Surface Pro X is so fun to use. I find myself regularly making excuses to use this device. Put simply, this device feels almost magical. Yes, I realize this sounds cheesy, but when is the last time you used a Microsoft product that felt magical? For me, it was probably my first PC running Windows 95. As for other devices, I felt a similar draw to my original iPad, the first retina display iPad and the iPad Pro. That’s it. Yet the Microsoft Surface Pro has the magical feeling for me.

I bought one of the original Microsoft Surface RT devices back when it first came out, and while it's been a solid device, it's really old (for a PC) at this point. I've been waiting for a new Surface to showcase Windows 10 ARM Edition, and the Pro X is it.
I didn't plan to buy the top end model (16G ram, 512G drive), but I was fortunate to find an open-box deal for a really great price so I jumped on it. I really couldn't tell it'd ever been used; it was in pristine condition when I opened it.
The Pro X and Windows 10 pretty much fixes all the mistakes Microsoft made with the Windows RT devices. It's got a real solid-state drive and plenty of ram, so it's fast! The ARM version of Windows 10 is just like the Intel version, with no silly app restrictions and no missing features. It even has an emulation layer so 32bit x86 apps will run along side native ARM apps. Fair warning though - that emulation can be hit and miss with games though. For example, the Steam app installs just fine, but I had to fiddle with the emulation settings to get War Robots to run. One other game I play (Vega Conflict) will run but occasionally randomly crash. Starcraft 2 on the other had runs flawlessly. I knew all this when before I got the device, so it's something I can live with. I expect the emulation will only get better with time and updates. The only real gripe I have is the Java version of Minecraft crashes on the Pro X because Qualcomm (who makes the SoC in this device) hasn't included OpenGL support in their windows video drivers yet. I hope they rectify that situation!
Back to device itself. The screens is gorgeous! The device itself is very thin, and pretty lightweight for its size. I love that it has two USB-C ports, and that I can charge it with either the included Surface connect charger or my USB-C charger. It does not have a USB-A port or a headphone jack though. I have a little bag with a USB wired ethernet dongle that I kept with my old Surface, so I just threw in a couple adapters (USB-C to A, and USB-C to headphone) and I'm good. The keyboard is awesome (the pen-holder spot is ingenious), and I've also discovered I really like the Windows 10 tablet mode too.
I'm very happy with this device so far. And I haven't even used one of its biggest selling points - always connected via 4G LTE.

MUST HAVE 16GB RAM

I first got the 8gb/128gb version, but that thing used about 40% of its RAM at idle, so when I'd have a few web pages open, especially if those pages were running media panes, it would easily utilize 70-90% of its RAM.
That high utilization wasn't problematic in and of itself, but the device would slow down significantly, which was noticeable and annoying.
This 16GB configuration, however, has RAM to spare, and seldom if ever slows down under load. Much better.
"Ease of use" is good with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse- hard to imagine that it wouldn't be, considering the age and amount of investment in the operating system. But with just the Surface Pen and touch (finger) input? Then, it's pretty poor, and gives the impression that Surface Pen & touch input are functionalities not prioritized by the decision makers at Microsoft, and that they don't especially want users to use this device in such a capacity.

Great touch screen, Easy to use. Face ID could be improved as it frequently doesn't recognize me. Touchpad is a little too sensitive as it selects as I hover with my clicking

I should have did more research on it. I actually thought I was able to play pc games it doesn't. It also doesn't support regular apps. But its nice for a student who doesn't need to use any desktop publishing programs. Good for students who don't plan to play any pc games on it

I couldn’t be happier with this tablet that actually functions as a laptop. It’s so fast and powerful. So glad I chose to go with the Pro to grow into with the extra memory. With working from home orders with COVID, I can rely on getting my work done efficiently and timely.

I needed a tablet powerful enough to run windows and related applications. The snap dragon processor isn't as fast as expected.
It functions really well except 2 items:
1) the handwriting optimization feature in Windows 10 does not function. So while it can recognize handwriting, it cannot learn your style to do better. After several rounds with Tier 2 I received a summary "that isn't a supported feature" answer. Truly infuriating since that is literally the point of the device.
2) windows update for optional updates has never worked for some reason. But non-optional updates work fine.
I recommend only getting the version with max SSD and memory. It won't work otherwise if you want to actually use office applications. I use oneNote and excel mostly.
Lastly, and unrelated to the above, would recommend disabling settings sync on your other devices. I wanted a fresh start, but was annoyed that it kept ending up with all my desktop settings.
For the price I paid, and after remembering the above, I'm now annoyed. However, it serves the purpose I purchased it for.

This is a very good tablet, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It is very expensive for what it offers.
But overall if you don't mind the price tag and the compatibility problems (because of ARM processor), it is definitely a very well built laptop a worth buying. .

So powerful and light. Nice size. Just wish it had a usb port for thumb drives. You have to buy an adapter that has a cadre of different ports. Heading into apple territory by nickel and diming you for unique adapters and such. Expensive.

Loved the core function of the Pro X. Unfortunately it fails as a full powered and featured Windows 10 device. The price does not overcome what it cannot do. I returned it a week later and replaced with a Surface Pro 7.
The screen quality, the keyboard and the pen stowaway was great!
The tablet had a high end feel and look. Unfortunately the SQ1 processor is not right.

I didn't purchase this tablet/laptop for gaming or to run complex graphics or other memory-eating tasks. I needed something that I can run Microsoft Office products on and Chrome as most everything we do is web-based. The Surface Pro X does exactly what I need it to do. I put an AT&T Sim in it even though it comes with an e-sim. I can use it anywhere and everywhere here around Tampa.
I did purchase the keyboard and like the idea of how it attaches magnetically when I'm transporting the tablet so it helps protect the screen, but also is easily detachable when I want to go from laptop to windows-based tablet. Good stuff!

I purchased this for the cellular connectivity, so I can stay connected with my business any where I was. It works way better than I expected, not only can do all my invoicing on the run and get paid asap. Then I can go through and design my logo, figure out what I'll do the truck design, free hand draw up some new products. On top of it all its is more Desktop PC than a tablet any day of the week, out performs all day long. I plan on buying another very soon and possible a couple for the family.

Because of the ARM processor, most of the 64-bit software that I use for business will not install. Amazingly, this includes Microsoft's own Office 2019 and Officer365 products. After two hours on the phone with MS support, they could not offer a solution for installing the Office products either. If you only use cloud-based products or the very limited apps in the MS store, this will work for you. If you're a serious business user, I'd consider something else. I'm returning this product. I'm disappointed in both Best Buy and Microsoft for not making this limitation very clear in their sales presentations.
