Swann 8 Channel 1TB, 4x 1080p Enforcer™ Cameras & Powered Wifi Auto Tracking Camera This is a home monitoring camera system that coems with 4 hardwired cameras and one wifi camera with a central DVR system which lets you program/control recording parameters for the cameras. The 8-channels refers to the DVR unit. So, you can expand it by adding 4 additional hardwired cameras. While the DVR unit provides a means to connect to and administer the wifi camera, its recordings are stored separately on a memory card on the camera itself. The cameras are plastic in construction with long coax/power extension cables. This will allow providing good coverage of homes where a single floor can be around 1000 square foot in size, maybe bigger depending on the actual shape and location of points to be monitored. The units are not the most ruggedized ones out there, but given that you'd need to mount them in a location that provides visibility to a yard, doors, etc, they'll likely be under eaves or other overhangs and get some indirect protection. As as they're stationary, they're not subject to bumps or things like that so likely should do well. A bit thicker housing could be nice, but I expect these will hold up in most conditions except high heat desert environments. The 1TB DVR unit is pretty much a cable model like looking device. You'll need a monitor or TV to use with the DVR for initial configuration. The Swann Security app those allow you to configure and control some settings, but you'll use the mouse driven (mouse included) DVR menu to do your detailed setup. That said, it aapears the app can get more functionality with time. Configuration was pretty quick after doing the heavy lifting of routing the camera wires. That said, routing things was a bit tricky - its much easier if you you're doing this during the construction phase. Luckily, I have an attick crawl space with closet near the entrance. If I had to get the wires down to the basement, I may have needed to hire a contractor to handle the rest of that. Note, the wifi camera has its own power supply unlike the hardwired cameras that have a power cable which will run back with the coax to the DVR. With cameras plugged in and everything powered, you'll then click through the menu to configure settings for the cameras. I hope your ladders are still up because the cameras just have about a 90 degree field of view. So with them in the DVR is your first opportunity to adjust things, especially since you'll be configuring an alert area for each camera. Having a friend help would be best than running back and forth by yourself. The cameras have a heat/infrared detector in addition to the camera. They also have a spotlight/floodlight, siren, and red and blue flashing LEDs (which flash police style). You'll notice there's a color night vision mode. However, it doesn't work quite the way you expect. So, at night, normally, the camera is in infrared mode rather that normal color recording. I'm guessing it relies on that heat/infrared sensor to actually detect events. Anyway, color night vision mode just means instead of recording by capturing infrared with the camera, do so by capturing normal light. However, unless you have external lights, there won't be enough light for you to actually see much of anything in that mode. You can try working around this with the floodlight, but it turns off after a timeout and it doesn't really help that much. So, reserve color night vision for an area that already has normal outdoor motion triggered lights or just is well lit (maybe there's a street light right outside your front door). The app is nice. With the DVR connector to the internet, you can view your cameras through the app in realtime, playback video, turn on/off the siren, police lights, floodlight, but the really nice thing is getting notifications when the motion detection is triggered. That means you can set things up where a camera that covers your front door area doubles as a doorbell cam. The google home integration is pretty basic and requires you have a chromecast. Essentially, you're limited to telling it to show you a particular camera on your TV. I suppose if you have a lot of TVs lying around, you could dedicate one to this, but I can't really see switching away from a show I'm watching to fullscreen the view from a camera when I can just pull it up from my phone. I've not really talked differently about the wifi vs the hardwired camera. This would be a much nicer kit if they were all like the wifi one. For one, it has a larger viewing angle, all its configuration is available from the app. It also has a microphone and speaker so you can effectively have two way interaction. It doesn't have the siren, spotlight, or police lights and while it seemingly has more features, the google home integration is the same. You're also limited as a power source needs to be available near the camera. Video quality is about the same, both 1080p, though for some reason, the wifi camera did seem to be clearer. In all, I think this can be a decent system for someone getting started setting up some home video surveillance. I think I'd be biased towards one that's more wifi based with all the cameras that has more functionality for integration into a home assistant however.

I never made it to the actual DVR system and outdoor cameras. The indoor "tracking" camera was beyond problematic trying to get going. I have used numerous systems like this one, so I am familiar with how they function. Although I cannot speak for the main system, the one indoor wifi camera was problematic, and often non-responsive / sluggish. My internet speed is 100 mb/sec with a confirmed excellent wifi signal, so that wasn't the issue. Probably why they threw the extra camera in as a "free" add-on, I would suspect. I will be returning the entire system, unfortunately.

      Hello BMunster,

Thank you for reaching out to us and sharing your feedback. We are sorry to hear about your most recent experience with our Swann - Enforcer 8-Channel, 4-Camera Indoor/Outdoor Wired 1080p 1TB DVR Surveillance System. Based on the information provided, the issues you ran into were with our Wireless Tracking Camera. The camera has 3 different settings for streaming quality; low, medium, and high. If you are having problems streaming you can lower the settings and test to see if it improves. Note that lowering the stream settings does not affect the quality of the recordings. If you have very fast upload speeds you can set your camera to high, but if your upload speed is not that good then we recommend you use medium or low for the streaming setting.

Contact our support team and provide more information to begin troubleshooting your device before your return.

Make sure you know the 1080p enforcer cameras are not only lower resolution but are also silent, unlike the 4K enforcer cameras. There was no mention of this difference at all and I was very disappointed. You can see the product pictures show a mix of cameras with and without speaker grill at the base and they even photoshopped them out in some pictures.
