I'd like to give this a 4.5 but that's probably not fair, really the only thing not to like about this lens is that it is NOT the Sony G Master 70-200. That is said a bit tongue in cheek but that was the choice I made when looking at the two of them. Why did I go with the Tamron? It's half. Half the price and half the weight.
I am using it with the Sony A7RIV and do a mixture of portraits and pet photography (non-professional) and the Tamron gives me razor sharp photos at any reasonable light, focuses fast even on a jumping dog, is easy to hand hold... and fits well within my kit bag. I usually carry 4 lenses at a time and really do appreciate the weight and size savings over the Sony G Master.

I’ve added this lens to my other 2 Tamron fast zooms - the 17-28 and 28-75 f/2.8, so I now own the “holy trinity”. The Tamron 70-180 has a constant aperture of f/2.8 and is super sharp right through the focal range. Although it does not have image stabilization built in it’s light enough for it not to be a problem if you have IBIS in your Sony camera body. I decided to buy the Tamron range and save the extra cost over the Sony zooms as they are plenty sharp enough for all my needs with both the A7iii and the A7Riii - and I invested the savings in some Sony brand primes.... best of both worlds!

This has been a great lens to have! It's not the lightest...but the glass is incredible. It's been my workhorse all summer, shooting my sons baseball games. over 120k photos and the only thing I have an issue with is with dust...yes, it is sealed, but somehow the dust has got in. It's a pain...but Tamron offers a 6-year warranty and getting it cleaned is free! Due to Covid19 their 3 day turn around time isn't being offered, but I got my lens back within a 10 days. (the lens I sent had some scratches (my fault) but when I got it back...they were gone! Literally looks brand new across the board! I LOVE that.
Honestly, I've been super impressed with how great the pictures turn out and how great this product is.

This lens is light for its focal length and easy to carry whole day long. The image quality is excellent similar to my 28-75 mm lens. This is missing the external buttons but those can be managed using the camera settings. The price is great compared to the gm lens.

Compared the Sony glass lens, Tamron is light weight, half the price, offers f/2.8 and is easy to use with Sony E-mount bodies. Your hands will thank you, add the Best Buy protection plan and you don't have to worry about paying out of pocket if damaged for select years of coverage.

Great lenses for Sony E Mount series. I use it for my Sony ZV-E10 and FX-30. Both models are crop sensor cameras, so it actually turns this lense into a 90-200mm. Great for outdoor sports like football and soccer. Not so great for indoor sports like Basketball or Volleyball, unless you are sitting in nosebleed sections.

Yes it doesn't zoom to 200 and no you wont miss it. 180mm is fine, crop it or walk closer to your subject. No optical image stabilization but I can use it with my A7iii with no issues and appreciate the trade off in weight savings. Image quality? Tack sharp to me but I also don't blow up an image to 300% and look at every pixel. Listen, this len's super power is that it's f2.8 and your average dad with a camera like yours truly can afford this without needing to come up with creative excuses to justify the cost to the better half. Get this, take photos, capture memories and be happy.

Relatively new to photography so I didn't want to drop a ton of cash on a lens. I did a lot of research on comparable lenses (Sony 70-200 f4 and f2.8) and this made the most sense for the price. I enjoy the reach of the lens, not concerned with missing 20mm on the long end. The weight is manageable. Autofocus works well.

Excellent for the price. I replaced my Sony 70-200mm GMaster gen 1 with this. Image sharpness is not quite as good across the whole shot and focus misses a little more than the Gen 1 Sony when shooting high FPS but I bought it for the weight difference. I use my cameras for backpacking/hunting and due to the weight of the Sony, I would leave it at home or at camp most of the time. This Tamron comes with me in the bag every time now due to being so much lighter. Video shooting focus has always been fast and accurate. Great for the money. The Sony Gen 2 is a much nicer lens and better in almost all aspects, but for the price and how I use my lenses, this one is more bang for your buck.

Amazing lense!!! An every photographer must have. Great lense for portraits, telephoto and videos. This is my go to lense next to my Tamron 28-75 f2.8 when I work weddings or do street photography. Get sharp images with amazing color renditions straight off the Sony A7iii. Buy it!

I will start out with the negative. There is no lens stabilization. But I knew this when buying the lens and the price point of the lens reflects this. This lens focuses fast and is tack sharp! The colors are rich and accurate. It is smaller than all current 70-200 f2.8 lenses on the market. This lens works great on my a6000. My next camera body will have IBIS so the stabilization thing will be a moot point at that time. I would buy this lens again..... absolutely. The quality and value are there.
