After exchanging for two 2013 models, both of which had the noisy whine, I found another 2012 model that is quiet and runs great. Hopefully this new one will last more than 25 days this time!

I read the reviews but when I saw some people mention that it could be noisy I thought maybe not that bad or maybe they just got a bad one. I must have gotten a bad one. It is ridiculous. If I whack it just right it goes back to mildly annoyingly loud but walk across the floor a little too heavily or set something down next to it too hard and it goes back to the grinding, buzzing sound.

This design allows the fan to help draw away the heat and keeps the potential for damage from metal blades down. These fans do have a limited 1 year warranty. Even though I use the optional power adapter I cannot run my super drive or g drive external hard drive off of the built in USB hub. Additionally the fans do not shut off unless you unplug the power cord so I either put up with a constant fan hum or climb under the desk to unplug from the power supply.
