Love almost everything about the TV. Easy to setup. Good picture and sound. Easy to navigate the menus. Remote does not have good range. Almost need to be right in front of the TV.

This TV is great for the price. I haven’t noticed a difference in the 4k quality as of yet, but it’s leagues better than what I owned before. Definitely an upgrade.

      Hi SweetJP,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. Without more information, it is difficult to what exactly your didn't like about the Internet setup. For this particular model, you can connect to the Internet either through the Ethernet port, or via WiFi. Additionally, you will still be able to use this TV as a traditional TV by connecting external devices (such as an antenna, cable box, game system, etc) to the TV via the inputs located on the back. Without the Internet, you would simply not be able to access the smart features, such as streaming or screen mirroring. Hope this helps!

      Thank you,

    Fantastic TV, related remote issues

I wasn't quite sure how many stars to give this television. I decided on 5, because at the end of the day TCL has built a great television, with a caveat. Firstly, I don't have cable and consume only streaming programming, so I can't comment on the limitations of the tv in regard to watching live tv, navigating dish or cable channels with the remote, etc. Now about the tv itself. I found myself split between getting this television or a comparable one from the TCL P series, which has local dimming and other schmancy stuff. The P series was more expensive and was also unavailable in a 49" version, so I saved the money and the space by purchasing this 49" S series. That said, I love it. I understand that technically the P series has better colors and blacks, but the blacks on this set are pretty darn black and the colors are quite vivid. Maybe the P series would have been more impressive, but I'm very impressed with this set. Shows on Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube are clear, vibrant, and great to watch, and animation looks bonkers good. I also took some time to watch some HDR footage on Amazon and thought it looked amazing. One exception to this has been a show called The Punisher on Netflix. It’s dark and gritty and was the series I was watching when I purchased the set, I was taken aback at how grainy the images seemed on this set (but warm, similar to older black and white photos), and sometimes the shadows would look blotchy in areas. I couldn't replicate these issues on almost any other shows though, and once I accepted that the show in question was going to look this way I decided that the graininess was fine by me and that it was a stylistic decision by the director. The blotchiness is noticeable, but it's also very occasional. The app can be used to adjust the picture settings, but man is it overly complicated. There are rows of color options with different percentages and I don’t understand how to begin using it. I really wish the adjustments were simplified… contrast, vividness, dark, light, and more or less of the basic RBG would be fine to get me there. I suppose I will eventually figure this out, but yeesh. I’m really happy with the options for connections on this thing. I’ve always run my televisions through an older analog stereo with really great speakers. With this tv I use a 3.5mm to RCA adapter and feed that to my stereo… as long as the stereo is turned on I can control the volume with the Roku remote! This probably sounds exceptionally old-school to you folks with digital receivers, but this is a fantastic option for me. Also, instead of pressing various buttons on the stereo if I want to watch the blu-ray player, I can get to it via the Roku menu. Brilliant! And once I choose the blu-ray player, the Roku remote controls the blur-ray player like the native remote! So. Dang. Cool. Now I can physically turn on the stereo or the blue-ray, and the Roku remote controls everything. I love this. As for the caveat, the lack of a headphone jack on the remote is a total head-scratcher. My house isn't that large and I tend to stay up after the family has gone to sleep, and I've always been able to watch shows silently with the built-in headphone jack on my Roku 3. This tv's remote was made without the jack, so I need to use the Roku app on my phone to use the headphone option, which would be fine if it were worth a dang, but it's a truly lousy experience. Using the phone as a remote as already a limiting experience, as there is no tactile button pressing in the dark, and my phone goes to sleep after 10 second. So any remote usage through the app means I need to look at my phone, wake it up/unlock it, and visually search for the buttons. I acknowledge that it's very much a 1st world problem, but nobody should make a standalone remote for a tv out of a slab-- they have physical buttons for a reason. My solution has been to use the Roku app for headphones and the Roku remote for navigation, which seems silly. Hey TCL: just charge me $10 more for the tv and include a headphone jack! But I digress. The app is glitchy as heck and the audio constantly cuts out or disconnects through it. The audio on the Roku 3 remote would cut out for a second from time to time, which was livable. But now if i'm forwarding through a YouTube video, either on the remote or the app, the audio through the app speeds up or slows down like an old reel to reel tape, or just stops. I know that this review is about the television itself, not the phone app, but the remote is limited and the app is touted as a selling point on the box. If customers don’t want the headphone option, then fine, the tv itself absolutely rocks. But for those of us who consider a headphone option a killer feature, this feels like a really dumb choice. So there it is, 5 stars for the television, with a big caveat that if you rely on the beautiful, mind-blowingly simple option to plug your headphones into your remote you will definitely be disappointed.

The screen was cracked when I took it out of the box. Best Buy wouldn’t exchange because it was past the return date. We couldn’t set it up sooner, because the room it was going in wasn’t ready. I didn’t get to use it at all and it’s literally going in the trash. This will be my last purchase from Best Buy!!! And I’ll be returning everything I bought in the last 14 days and purchasing it elsewhere...over $1,000 worth of merchandise.

    Great TV for the Money

This TV is replacing a Sharp Aquos that lasted for 11 years. That was a good and reliable TV, but shopping for a new TV proved to be a little more daunting. In the end, I chose the TCL. I didn't know anything about the brand other than what the Best Buy associate told me. The price was right, we packed it up. Set up was super simple. The remote is seems cheap but it's not bad and easy to use. I'm just an average guy, and I don't know anything about picture quality other than what I can see with my own eyes. To my eyes, the picture is really nice. Whether I'm watching movies, tv, netflix, or sports, the picture and the sound are really good. This TV is very user friendly. Hooking up my cable box and xbox are easy and it's simple to switch to each. On my old TV, it was a pain to switch inputs. This TV allows you to mark your cable input and your xbox input. When I turn the TV on, it goes directly to the input I designate. The smart tv functions are good as well. It's nice having Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, etc. on the TV instead of having to go through the Xbox. The way those apps are laid out when open also seems more user friendly than when I have them open with the Xbox. Are there nicer TV's out there? Of course. But for the price, you can't go wrong with the TCL. I believe that you get what you pay for. But with the TCL, you get way more than you would expect. Time will tell how long this TV lasts, but for now-I am extremely happy with this purchase.

With the price being towards the lower end of 50" 4K tv's I was a little worried. No more...I have owned this TV for close to a month now and love it. The HD picture is crystal clear and the 4k is amazing. The home screen is easy enough to navigate that my mother can do it. Roku is great and all the apps it allows me to use run perfect over my 100mps internet that plugs into the tv and is a breeze to set up. Great TV for the money. Couldn't be happier

I have been a LOYAL Samsung customer for 6 years and 4 Tv's. I wanted to upgrade my 40" Samsung 4K in the bedroom that I bought last year, to a 49" or 50". I did a lot of research and had settled on the 50" MU6300 series. After seeing the TCL I ran comparisons using the 3 major websites that review TV's and they all were fairly similar with their reviews. The S405 series TCL is a fantastic TV for the price. It is very close to the MU6300 series EXCEPT the TCL screen is not as bright. Don't think I'm saying the TCL has a dim screen because it doesn't! The TCL just will not perform as well in a very bright room. It would have a glare or reflection in a bright room. This isn't an issue if it's in the bedroom. And most people don't watch TV in direct bright light. Overall I'm VERY happy with this TV and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great tv on a budget. The Roku built in is a really cool feature. Although, it would be nice to have more access to apps like a regular Roku. But that's just a preference. I took off 1 star for the remote. It's a little odd with the back button up top and the 10 second rewind button below. And it would have been nice to have the headphone jack in the remote like on a Roku. But again, that's just a preference.

Excellent picture and believe me the settings can be changed through the Roku mobile app. Once I downloaded the app, the brightness can be changed. Be warned not to push the other settings to the max. Other than that very fast OS, Roku is great. Using an Xbox One S I have to say I'm impressed. I've watched 4k hdr movies, HDR games, upconverted blu rays and you won't hear me complaining. If you want a good tv, for a steal of a price this is the one. And if you are worried about the company do what I did, get the geek squad service plan for either 2 or 5 years. Excellent tv . . .

This is filling in for my awesome beautiful expensive Samsung that blew out recently in a T-storm until I fix it. I was without a TV for 3 weeks when I got to see the TCL running side by side with some other more expensive units and was impressed. Tried it at home and almost returned it because the picture wasn't looking to hot. Then about a week in, it burned in... I'm impressed. The picture from my PS4 is excellent. Get a good quality HDMI cable for your other HDMI devices. The sound is actually descent. It's easy to use. I just wish it had a swivel stand. And I hope I don't lose the tiny remote in my couch. Lighting inside and outside the home does not affect the experience.
