This TCL tv fit the bill for what we were looking for and the price range we wanted along with it being a Roku tv. We chose this TCL tv over Wal-Mart TCL tv simply because this was the 5 series and Wal-Mart only had 4 series. This and when we purchased it was a preblack Friday sale for under 250. We got the tv along with warranty for right at $305. Couldn't be more happy with the deal we got.

Excellent for a first time 4k tv. The darker colors can be spotty at times but the bright colors show to perfection. The volume is great also.

All I have to say is WOW!!!!! This is our 1ST TCL TV, we did a ton of research on TCL and the specific feature set we were looking for. Let me just say all the reviews have it right on TCL. We are completely blown away with the picture quality and the amazing super thin design of the TV. The TV is so thin from a profile prospective that it looks like a picture frame on my wall because it sits so close to the wall. My last TV was an eye sore for my wife because it stuck out like a sore thumb. We bought this TV because it has so much technology versus any other 49” TV on BestBuy’s web site. We were specifically looking for a TV capable of Dolby Vision HDR. We are cord cutters and wanted to be able to take advantage of Netflix and Dolby Vision HDR. Again, we were simply blown away with how well this TV performed in super dark and super bright scenes. This is also our 1st TV with Roku in it. After using for only a couple of days we are for sure switching our other TVs from Apple TV to Roku. It’s so easy to use and has the Big 10 Network app, which is huge in my household.
Pros:
Dolby Vision HDR looks AMAZING on this TV.
Has wide color gamut
Aesthetics are great being…so thin and it’s noticeable the TV is built with quality in mind.
Roku software works like a champ and is super easy to use
Cons:
None. Zero.
Wish I would have upgraded to one sooner, HIGHLY recommend this TV!

Believe it or not, this is my first smart TV! Coming from an older LCD, I cannot believe how amazingly thin and light this is! It must weigh 1/3 of my old TV. This made installation a breeze. My son recommended Roku and this TV in particular due to everything you get for $399.99. Dolby Vision HDR, Roku, and wide color. I thought Roku was a streaming channel like Netflix, but it’s just the smart system on the TV. You get every streaming app I can think of! I loved that right after I got it set up (about 10 minutes to create an account and get all my stuff connected and labeled) I was actually able to see Dolby HDR footage. The Dolby app that Roku gives you has a bunch of amazing clips with awesome picture quality. I already tried Netflix and Vudu and the picture is way beyond my expectations.
Picture quality and the ease of use are a huge plus for this TV. The sound isn’t as good as my older set, but I’m told that there might be a sound bar in my future for Father’s day!

TV was easy to set up, has a great picture. The Roku platform is easy to navigate. My cable TV and all of my apps (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Direct TV NOW, Hulu, etc.) were easy to connect to and get going. I have no problem with the remote like others have written about. The color is excellent. I was replacing a 12 year old 1080p 42" TV which had nothing wrong with it other than not smart and only had one USB port so if I wanted to connect my DVD player or any other device, I had to remove my Amazon Firestick which was a pain.

TCL 49S515 review

After doing research on 4K TVs, TCL was the best value compared to other brand 4Ks in their price range. As I own two TCL sets and have had great experiences with both, TCL was the best choice. Next I compared 4 and 5 series TCLs in the same screen size. The 5 series has Dolby Atmos which to me was the better of the two. I was not disappointed.
I chose the 49S515 model which is a Best Buy exclusive and was priced $30 less than the comparable 49S517... the difference is the voice activated remote on the 49S517.
The picture is amazing and that is watching 1080p streaming and HD cable programming. I haven't signed up for NexFlix 4k streaming nor do I own a 4k DVD player. I did replaced my HDMI cords with 4K compatible to be sure of the best picture. There can be a lot of light reflection on the screen in a brightly lit room. This is one draw back that I can tweet and live with for a really good picture.
Set up was extremely easy and not complicated at all. I already had a Roku account which streamlined setup.
The only reason for 4 stars and not 5... if I could take off 1/2 a star I would have..... is the sound. Thin LED TV speakers are known for sounding tinny and shallow, however I've never had a volume problem with any of my TVs including my TCLs. However the 49S515 speakers sound great, but the volume is bad. The range is from 0 to 99 and if not connected to a sound bar or receiver, watching any app or from other source, the sound has to be turned up to at least the 80's. or higher especially if there is any background noise in the room. I haven't done any research to see if this is a common problem with 5 series TCLs as I use a receiver and I'm not too concerned with the volume problem.
I'm satisfied with this purchase and would recommend this set to anyone looking for a great low cost 4K TV with Dolby Atmos. There are a ton of comparisons and reviews on this brand and others on the web.

This is my first 4K TV so I'm not an expert on image quality and why more expensive 4K TVs are the price they are. This TV has proved to be a great value for the size I'm getting compared to other brands I was looking at.
Pros: Movies and games look great on this TV and connecting my console and other devices was easy. The interface is approachable and easy to use, and the Roku integration makes streaming a breeze. I just recently noticed that this TV also has Apple Airplay which is a huge bonus. No need to get an Apple TV if you are looking to mirror your iPhone or Mac!
Cons: The remote is one of my least favorite things about this TV. Its small form factor can be convenient but it also loves to slip and fall because of the slippery plastic material used. All of the clicky buttons feel pretty creaky and cheap, and I find myself pressing buttons multiple times because of lag (could be the software or the remote). The preprogrammed buttons for streaming services on my remote are for Netflix, Sling, Hulu, and Direct TV Now. These shortcuts are nice if you use these services, but if you're only using half or less of them like me, this is a huge waste of space. Would be great if these were blank programmable buttons.
Overall I have been pretty happy with my purchase, its been a great TV for my use case of streaming and casual gaming.

I purchased this TV to replace a 3 year old 4K TV that didn't have HDR or any of the other newer picture options that have come out since.
I won't go into a detailed review. I just wanted to say that I picked up this TV for $399 and I think its a great value. The HDR 4k picture is better than my 3 year old 4K Vizio. I didn't think I would notice that much a difference between HDR and non-HDR but its definitely noticeable. Especially when I play HDR upgraded games on my Xbox One X.
The built in Roku apps are good, but I find the remote to be a little sluggish. I wish the response time was a bit snappier, I find myself pressing a button and then waiting a moment for the TV to respond.
Before I was using a 4K Amazon Fire TV for all of my streaming. I have found that most of the Roku apps look just as good, except for Roku's Twitch.TV app. For some reason Roku is still using the crummy version I remember from a couple of years ago when I had a Roku box before. Hopefully Twitch will eventually update this to match the Amazon version because the Amazon version of the app is great.
One other nitpick is that I don't like that I have to use a separate Roku app on my phone or tablet to get into the detailed picture settings. I like to calibrate my TV so this was a slight irritation. On a related note most 4K TV's will tell you the onscreen resolution when you push the Display or Info button (so for example if I'm streaming a movie but it looks a little off I would push the Display button on my Vizio remote to see if the current picture was 4K or 1080P. Then I could check my Internet if I wasn't streaming a 4K signal). I can't find a way to check the on screen resolution with this TCL.
Overall, if you are looking for a HDR 4K TV but don't want to spend a lot then this is a great deal.

Very Affordable Option for a Good Sized 4K HDR TV

I've been using this television for just over 7 months now and I'm very happy with the purchase. I first bought a standalone Roku quite a while back and really appreciated the interface and functionality. This is now the second television I have purchased with the integrated Roku operating system and it's actually become a bit difficult to image going back to a set without it.
While I typically prefer as many options and ways to customize an experience as possible, I'm consistently impressed by the ability of the remote to do everything I need with a minimum of buttons. I do wish that nearly half the remote wasn't taken up with 4 buttons dedicated to pre-selected apps, all of which require subscriptions (meaning that I only ever use 2 of them). However, this is a relatively minor gripe.
I appreciate the ability to rename inputs and organize all of the viewing options in the order I prefer. For those who use PLEX, the app is kept pretty well up-to-date and the latest update in particular is the best way to interact with my personal collection of media. I never have issues with the data connection and only occasionally have to restart the TV to get the performance back to optimal levels.
The image is quite nice and while I wouldn't compare it to the top of the line models form the likes of Samsung or Sony, it performs admirably, particularly at this price point. I have this in my bedroom and while some would think it would be too big for such a small room, I enjoy the larger screen and it never feels excessive.
The only noticeable drawback from a technical perspective is the audio quality, but that has become the new reality given how thin modern televisions have become. Still, I would highly recommend pairing this with a speaker system or soundbar. Otherwise, you'll likely be cranking the audio up to maximum, especially if you have any ambient noise in the room, like a fan.
The TV is extremely light and easy to move. The legs it came with were spaced too far apart to fit on the TV stand I have, but I purchased a universal stand and installation was very simple.
If you're on a budget or looking to add another 4K HDR set to a secondary room, this is a fantastic option.

Hi, so I will give you a little bit of a background before I give a review just to give you an idea of where I'm coming from on the review. I had been playing games and watching sports on the same TV since 2004. By 2018, the 65" Sony HD 1080i TV that I had been using had started to actually make my eyes hurt because the difference in tech from then to now is insane. I would go to Best Buy for fun to look around and nearly poop myself with how good the TVs looked in comparison to my TV. So, I finally decided last year I would save and buy a new TV. I had intended to get a Samsung NU8000 in a 65". Ultimately, I was un-employed for about a month and it set me back and I also didnt have the desire to spend upwards to $1,300. So I decided on a modest TV to hold me over for a couple years or until I have more funds.
So I saw a this TV at the store and was underwhelmed. I felt that it looked simply Okay. Then, I read reviews for various TVs like the Samsung NU6900, LG UJ6300, Sony x720e, Vizio E, and this TV the TCL 5. The reason I didnt go for the TCL 6 or higher is because I now needed a 49" TV since my TV stand cant do any higher than that without a special stand (like the Samsung NU8000 has).
After reading numerous reviews and just taking a chance, I decided on the TCL 5 due to it having a wide color gamut. I also noticed in store that the color of the TV did have short spirts of "Wow" to it. So I thought, maybe if I calibrate it, it will look great.
Well, I tested the TV for the past two days after work, and after calibrating the TV for which show or game I'm watching I can say that I was accidentally right. This TV looks outstanding in comparison to a lot of TVs at its price. I don't watch in a bright room, so the TV is plenty bright. It looks just fantastic for games (as long as you switch the Picture mode to Normal most the time or sometimes just play with it). Also, expert calibration settings are also in the Roku App that you download on your phone and then pair to the TV. This allows me to adjust more expert settings like Gamma and Picture tone. Its crazy that this TV can look as good as it can for a modest buyer who just wanted something decent. I bought the 2-year warranty just to make sure. I'm glad I made this purchase.

I have to remind myself of the minimal price I paid for the television before getting to overly critical of it.
The remote, however, is absolutely abysmal. It is terrible. Words cannot describe exactly the level of incompetency it would take to design such a thing.
The HDR is well above average for its class. The speakers are a bit lacking so plan to purchase a sound-bar. The smart features are excellent. Much better than Samsung.

I've had my TCL for over two weeks and I simply love this TV. I've used it for everything so far, Dolby Vision HDR, HDR Gaming, 4K Streaming, and everything else you can use it for.
The user interface is simply very easy to use and beats out almost every platform out there with it's built in Roku. No need for annoying dongles or HDMI streaming devices, with this TCL offering Roku out of the box, why bother with an Amazon fire or and Apple TV.
The only problems I have with this TV, is the built in speakers, they're pretty weak, not loud enough or deep. They're ok for night time watching, but forget using them for movies or gaming.
This is not a big deal since you can hook up a sound bar and you can even route the audio from the tv to your smart phone using the Roku app.
The tv also has a built in 3.5mm headphone jack as well, which can allow for AUX for pretty much anything.
The Dolby Vision and HDR looks really good, but don't expect it to be extremely bright as this would cause the TV to be way above it's price bracket.
Gaming is also one of this TV's best qualities, if you have an Xbox One X or PS4 Pro, you will love how every game looks, and if you'd like, you can even hook up a PC to this TV and game on it as well, it has extremely low input lag at 22ms in 4k, even lower lag at lesser resolution, you will not be dissapointed.

This TCL had great picture color and quality with NO adjustment out of the box. Sound was very good also without a soundbar. We did have a other brand (LG) that we bought at Best Buy, but the color at home was very bad. Even after adjusting it. So we traded it back and purchased this one. Which was cheaper to boot. Easy set up. We are using this with an Over the Air Antenna also. The Build-in tuner is very very good. The remote takes a little getting used to. Much different from our old Vizio. Smaller and totally different. That would be the only down side.

Glad I waited for the 5 series TCL to go on sale. Bright colors with very good black make for a good viewing experience. Did some adjusting (brightening) from Advanced Picture setting and some sound Volume mode changes and everything was peachy. If picture seems too dark the menu has enough options to remedy and personalize to one's preferences. Happy with my purchase-nice crisp picture with very good detail. The built in Roku is a smooth experience-lots of entertainment options without extra wires and lag. TCL makes great Televisions with very good pricing,
