    Frustrating

I have heard a lot of great things about TCL TVs and when I heard about this new 5 series and everything that comes built into this TV, I wanted to jump on it. Unfortunately, it’s been frustrating. The good: -I primarily got this for gaming. And for that, it’s pretty darn impressive. XBOX One and PS4 4K and HDR content looks great (after some basic setting adjustments.) If I were only using the TV for that, this would be a five star review. -Roku OS is very well thought out. You do have to deal with annoying ads and it seems like you have fewer picture customization options than other similar TVs, but overall it’s still a highlight. The bad and frustrating: -I’ll cut right to it – Dolby Vision is terrible on this TV. I have Dolby Vision on another TV and it looks awesome. Here it’s so distracting, I can’t watch any content that supports Dolby Vision. When I play a UHD movie from Vudu, which supports Dolby Vision or UHD content from Netflix, which has both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, the issue happens every single time. It may be happening with HDR10, but it’s not nearly as noticeable. It is however, painfully noticeable with Dolby Vision. The movie/show being streamed constantly adjusts its brightness/content. If a scene gets a little darker, the brightness/contrast seems to jump up and wash everything out. When the scene gets brighter or there’s mixed lighting within a scene, the brightness/contrast drops down. This can sometimes happen numerous times within the same scene… sometimes a character movement within a scene triggers it. If you press the * button on the remote to bring up picture settings, you can see the white font on the menu constantly increase and decrease its brightness alongside the movie. I tried to find options to turn this off, but nothing works. There are some settings that you can’t adjust because Dolby Vision controls those settings while enabled. It’s one of the most distracting features I’ve ever seen – it makes enjoying a movie/show near impossible. I’d be shocked to find out this was an actual built-in feature. I went to my local Best Buy to talk to employees to gain some insight, but they didn’t have any experience with this TV. I called TCL customer support and they just kept insisting this was due to my poor internet connection. My other TV is downstairs and streams 4K content without an issue (at 100mbs). This TV is in the same room as the router. I’ve tested wireless and wired and get the same results. TCL support didn’t seem very interested in this – just kept insisting this happens when you have a poor internet connection (which I don’t.) Based on the fact that support claims the problem is my end and I know that’s just not the case, I’ll be returning this TV. And I’m not very happy about that. Like I said, gaming is fantastic. But since all the Dolby Vision content is unwatchable, I can’t justify keeping this.

Sorry for the frustration you’re having with your TV. One setting you might want to try turning off if it’s not too late, is dynamic contrast in advanced picture settings. If that doesn’t help you can contact my customer advocacy team in Corona California for more help. What you’re describing is definitely not normal. You can reach them at tclusasupport@tcl.com, and provide them with your contact information. Someone will get back to you right away to help. Thanks, TCL Support

    Calibrate it to be outstanding...

Hi, so I will give you a little bit of a background before I give a review just to give you an idea of where I'm coming from on the review. I had been playing games and watching sports on the same TV since 2004. By 2018, the 65" Sony HD 1080i TV that I had been using had started to actually make my eyes hurt because the difference in tech from then to now is insane. I would go to Best Buy for fun to look around and nearly poop myself with how good the TVs looked in comparison to my TV. So, I finally decided last year I would save and buy a new TV. I had intended to get a Samsung NU8000 in a 65". Ultimately, I was un-employed for about a month and it set me back and I also didnt have the desire to spend upwards to $1,300. So I decided on a modest TV to hold me over for a couple years or until I have more funds. So I saw a this TV at the store and was underwhelmed. I felt that it looked simply Okay. Then, I read reviews for various TVs like the Samsung NU6900, LG UJ6300, Sony x720e, Vizio E, and this TV the TCL 5. The reason I didnt go for the TCL 6 or higher is because I now needed a 49" TV since my TV stand cant do any higher than that without a special stand (like the Samsung NU8000 has). After reading numerous reviews and just taking a chance, I decided on the TCL 5 due to it having a wide color gamut. I also noticed in store that the color of the TV did have short spirts of "Wow" to it. So I thought, maybe if I calibrate it, it will look great. Well, I tested the TV for the past two days after work, and after calibrating the TV for which show or game I'm watching I can say that I was accidentally right. This TV looks outstanding in comparison to a lot of TVs at its price. I don't watch in a bright room, so the TV is plenty bright. It looks just fantastic for games (as long as you switch the Picture mode to Normal most the time or sometimes just play with it). Also, expert calibration settings are also in the Roku App that you download on your phone and then pair to the TV. This allows me to adjust more expert settings like Gamma and Picture tone. Its crazy that this TV can look as good as it can for a modest buyer who just wanted something decent. I bought the 2-year warranty just to make sure. I'm glad I made this purchase.

    Excellent Picture

Great TV for this price point. Pros: (1) Easy set-up (2) Excellent picture-After following calibration described in this article: https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2008/07/hdtv-adjust-the-picture-for-best-quality/index.htm. I first tried calibration steps found on a popular tech site but the picture quality was not good. I was going to return the tv but decided to try the calibration steps listed in the above article. Wow ... what a difference !! (3) Headphone jack: Trying to cut cost and discovered that I was able to plug in an old but good speaker set I purchased for my computer years ago. Wow! What a difference in sound quality!! Roku's control automatically controlled the volume (no changes to settings required). (4) Digital tuner: Out of curiosity, I hooked-up an indoor HD antenna I purchased a few years ago. 40 stations were picked up, with about 10+ channels having an excellent picture and the majority of remaining channels having a good to very good picture. This is nice if you are trying to cut costs. (5) Remote: Very simple with only a few buttons (6) User Interface: Very simple. When you turn on the TV, the inputs are listed as icons on the same screen as the channels (Netflix, Prime, etc.) and the input icons can be renamed to personalize. I moved the channels I watch to the top under the inputs so I do not have to scroll through the channels to get to the ones I watch. (7) If you are trying to reduce costs and cut the cable, You Tube TV has excellent picture quality on this Roku TV. Cons: (1)Calibration required to get excellent picture; however, steps to calibrate are available online free of charge. Guess most TV's require this now. (2) No blue-tooth, but if you are not using the headphone jack for your speakers, a blue-tooth adapter could be inserted in the headphone jack. (3) Poor sound quality, which can be expected with TV's today. If you are watching costs, you might be able to find a good computer speaker a lot cheaper than a TV speaker.

    TCL 49S515 review

After doing research on 4K TVs, TCL was the best value compared to other brand 4Ks in their price range. As I own two TCL sets and have had great experiences with both, TCL was the best choice. Next I compared 4 and 5 series TCLs in the same screen size. The 5 series has Dolby Atmos which to me was the better of the two. I was not disappointed. I chose the 49S515 model which is a Best Buy exclusive and was priced $30 less than the comparable 49S517... the difference is the voice activated remote on the 49S517. The picture is amazing and that is watching 1080p streaming and HD cable programming. I haven't signed up for NexFlix 4k streaming nor do I own a 4k DVD player. I did replaced my HDMI cords with 4K compatible to be sure of the best picture. There can be a lot of light reflection on the screen in a brightly lit room. This is one draw back that I can tweet and live with for a really good picture. Set up was extremely easy and not complicated at all. I already had a Roku account which streamlined setup. The only reason for 4 stars and not 5... if I could take off 1/2 a star I would have..... is the sound. Thin LED TV speakers are known for sounding tinny and shallow, however I've never had a volume problem with any of my TVs including my TCLs. However the 49S515 speakers sound great, but the volume is bad. The range is from 0 to 99 and if not connected to a sound bar or receiver, watching any app or from other source, the sound has to be turned up to at least the 80's. or higher especially if there is any background noise in the room. I haven't done any research to see if this is a common problem with 5 series TCLs as I use a receiver and I'm not too concerned with the volume problem. I'm satisfied with this purchase and would recommend this set to anyone looking for a great low cost 4K TV with Dolby Atmos. There are a ton of comparisons and reviews on this brand and others on the web.

Overall, this is a terrific tv. Size is perfect. This is an upgrade from a 42" Vizio that is in the living room. Love the size, probably could have squeezed a 55" in the space I had (I have bookcases on both sides of my tv) but I am very pleased with the 49". I have had Roku streaming units in the past and this was a "no-brainer" to go with this integration. Works like a champ. I also love the fact that you can use a thumb drive in the usb port to pause and rewind live tv. Only works with antenna, but since I am a cord cutter this is a nice feature. Colors look wonderful, I did spend quite a bit of time to find the right setting but I think i have it to my liking. I have a Xbox One, not the "S" version and the graphics look superb, I can only imagine what they would be like with the Xbox One S. My only gripes are these: 1) viewing angle is somewhat limited, once you started viewing from an angle that is not straigh ahead, the colors get light or washed out. For me that big of a deal since my couch and other reclining are still within a good angle with no viewing issues 2) Speakers are pretty weak in my opinion. Not necessarily with the voiume, just the way it sounds. Might have to invest in a soundbar. My old tv had better speakers. Nothing major but still a knock on the sound 3) Dolby Vision - someone mentioned the constant auto adjustment and I have experienced that with at least two movies that I have streamed thru VUDU 4k dolby vision: "The Last Jedi" and "Wonder", I know it is not my internet connection, so I wish I could just disable the auto adjust (not sure if that is an option). I watched Black Panther thru Vudu with HDR and that streamed fine, so I think it is a Dolby Vision thing. At the end of the day, I am very pleased, I would give this tv a 4 rating. It is terrific tv with lots of bang for the buck. I would recommend this tv to my friends. Setup was a breeze and love the Roku O/S. I do have an apple tv 4k device and xbox one attached and both perform flawlessly on this TCL unit.

I purchased this TV to replace a 3 year old 4K TV that didn't have HDR or any of the other newer picture options that have come out since. I won't go into a detailed review. I just wanted to say that I picked up this TV for $399 and I think its a great value. The HDR 4k picture is better than my 3 year old 4K Vizio. I didn't think I would notice that much a difference between HDR and non-HDR but its definitely noticeable. Especially when I play HDR upgraded games on my Xbox One X. The built in Roku apps are good, but I find the remote to be a little sluggish. I wish the response time was a bit snappier, I find myself pressing a button and then waiting a moment for the TV to respond. Before I was using a 4K Amazon Fire TV for all of my streaming. I have found that most of the Roku apps look just as good, except for Roku's Twitch.TV app. For some reason Roku is still using the crummy version I remember from a couple of years ago when I had a Roku box before. Hopefully Twitch will eventually update this to match the Amazon version because the Amazon version of the app is great. One other nitpick is that I don't like that I have to use a separate Roku app on my phone or tablet to get into the detailed picture settings. I like to calibrate my TV so this was a slight irritation. On a related note most 4K TV's will tell you the onscreen resolution when you push the Display or Info button (so for example if I'm streaming a movie but it looks a little off I would push the Display button on my Vizio remote to see if the current picture was 4K or 1080P. Then I could check my Internet if I wasn't streaming a 4K signal). I can't find a way to check the on screen resolution with this TCL. Overall, if you are looking for a HDR 4K TV but don't want to spend a lot then this is a great deal.

I bought this tv about 1 month ago. It is excellent for gaming and has amazing picture quality for the money. When i first bought it, i was thinking about upgrading all my tv’s to TCL’s. The roku portion is extremely easy to use and it is very user friendly. So why the two star rating.....the reason is that the HDMI ARC port does not work. I bought a Vizio 5.1 surround system with it, and it worked for three days. Now there is no sound coming from the system. It does not even recognize that it is connected. I first thought it was the soundbar, so i disconnected it and plugged it in to my upstairs Sony. It worked perfectly fine. So than i bought a new HDMI cable, and connected it back to the TCL tv. It still didnt work. I quickly contacted TCL support and troubleshooted with them. They couldnt figure out the problem, so they very graciously sent a brand new TV with a technician. The technician arrived and hooked up the tv and tested it with me. Amazingly the HDMI ARC was working and producing sound. I turned off the TV and came back the next night, and again there is no sound at all coming from the soundbar and the tv isnt recognizing that there is something in the HDMI ARC port. I know that it is not the soundbar because it was working on another tv and i can use the optical port and sound does come out with the roku tv. What I am not happy about is upon emailing them again with the same case number, i have gotten barely any response from them. It has been a week and a half and all conversation has stopped. This is ridiculous, i bought a tv for it to work like a new tv, not to have defective software or not work like it is intended. Buy at your own risk!!!

All I have to say is WOW!!!!! This is our 1ST TCL TV, we did a ton of research on TCL and the specific feature set we were looking for. Let me just say all the reviews have it right on TCL. We are completely blown away with the picture quality and the amazing super thin design of the TV. The TV is so thin from a profile prospective that it looks like a picture frame on my wall because it sits so close to the wall. My last TV was an eye sore for my wife because it stuck out like a sore thumb. We bought this TV because it has so much technology versus any other 49” TV on BestBuy’s web site. We were specifically looking for a TV capable of Dolby Vision HDR. We are cord cutters and wanted to be able to take advantage of Netflix and Dolby Vision HDR. Again, we were simply blown away with how well this TV performed in super dark and super bright scenes. This is also our 1st TV with Roku in it. After using for only a couple of days we are for sure switching our other TVs from Apple TV to Roku. It’s so easy to use and has the Big 10 Network app, which is huge in my household. Pros: Dolby Vision HDR looks AMAZING on this TV. Has wide color gamut Aesthetics are great being…so thin and it’s noticeable the TV is built with quality in mind. Roku software works like a champ and is super easy to use Cons: None. Zero. Wish I would have upgraded to one sooner, HIGHLY recommend this TV!

I originally bought the 43 inch 5 series before Christmas and being elite plus, I had 45 days plus the bonus return period for xmas. The tv looked great dead center but there were a few issues that I needed to come to terms with on if I'd be able to live with or not. The remote seemed to have a lot of response lag. The picture quality at an angle was decent till about 45 degrees and then it dropped off tremendously. Lastly, we watch Netflix a lot and the Dolby vision programming seemed to change the brightness on its own depending on the scene and how light or dark it was. I googled it and found several blogs; some back more than 6 months about a bug related to the TCL and Netflix Dolby vision programming. It was an annoying distraction so I returned the tv at the end of my 45 days. This tv is for a secondary room and with all my research and the lower budget, the tcl 5 series was still my best option. I purchased the 49 inch 5 series on sale for $350 and with the $125 in reward certificates, it made this an even better purchase. I haven't noticed any remote lag. The picture actually looks pretty good at an angle up to 60 degrees off dead center and then it degrades some. This is interesting; I tested the Netflix Dolby vision issue with the Marvel Defenders and season 2 of Stranger Things and haven't noticed the automatic brightness change at all. For being different size of the same tv, it somewhat feels like a completely different brand. I can't explain the difference. Part of me wonders if there might be some QC issues on the assembly line in production. Either way, I think I got a heck of a good 4k tv for around $225 after using my reward certs.

I have watched this brand tv grow over the last few years ... I wanted to try it next time i needed to buy .... I got this series 5 for the bedroom ... I am very pleased so far about 3 weeks into it ... It really converted the crappy signal from the dish 2 tv tuner to look like it should have on my other 1080 lcd ... Watched the latest Transformers movie and it was really an amazing picture , I believe it was streaming 4 k ... so far thats the only 4k i've seen on it and it was awesome ! Takes a little whie using it to find your way around the menus, but after a few days watching i have it all figured out ... I was able Customized the power on straight to the dish channel for my wife and have the dish remote power it on and off and volume ... i was able to format the picture for the cable box uhf signal independently form the other inputs . The picture settings are separate for each input as well ... that's really a cool feature... Also the sound is plenty good for a led , not transistor radio sounding like some ... I'm big into having surround sound and some powered sub woofers, but for the bedroom its just fine like it is , unless your really into Tv sound , you wont need a soundbar at all for a bedroom ... I'm really happy with it !

I've had my TCL for over two weeks and I simply love this TV. I've used it for everything so far, Dolby Vision HDR, HDR Gaming, 4K Streaming, and everything else you can use it for. The user interface is simply very easy to use and beats out almost every platform out there with it's built in Roku. No need for annoying dongles or HDMI streaming devices, with this TCL offering Roku out of the box, why bother with an Amazon fire or and Apple TV. The only problems I have with this TV, is the built in speakers, they're pretty weak, not loud enough or deep. They're ok for night time watching, but forget using them for movies or gaming. This is not a big deal since you can hook up a sound bar and you can even route the audio from the tv to your smart phone using the Roku app. The tv also has a built in 3.5mm headphone jack as well, which can allow for AUX for pretty much anything. The Dolby Vision and HDR looks really good, but don't expect it to be extremely bright as this would cause the TV to be way above it's price bracket. Gaming is also one of this TV's best qualities, if you have an Xbox One X or PS4 Pro, you will love how every game looks, and if you'd like, you can even hook up a PC to this TV and game on it as well, it has extremely low input lag at 22ms in 4k, even lower lag at lesser resolution, you will not be dissapointed.

Great TV for the price Sound is good. This is coming from a guy with A dolby Atmos 11 speaker set up including 2 subwoofers. I use with my home theater set up Remote is small not too many buttons but gets the job done and you get use to it quick Most smart tvs app stores are limited but this tv comes with ROKU tv . Tons of apps. This is my First time using roku tv as i have a Apple 4k tv i use for streaming on my 75” lg. But so far Roku is pretty cool I use this tv as a bedside tv. Picture quality is decent. I never expected it to look the same. As a $3000 lg TV i own. Its the same a buying a Toyota and say its no good because you expect it To perform as a Ferarri would . So to make those kinds of comparisons wouldnt be right. This is a great entry level TV for anyone now getting into 4k Without wanting to spend $1000 +. For a decent tv. In its size range So for $479 after tax and a 2 year warranty from best buy im happy customer.I would definitely recommend this tv Ive owned nothing but samsung, sony and LG TVs. Up until now but couldnt see myself paying that high price for a tv for my bedroom. Im not a gambling man. But i took a gamble on this brand and im glad i did

I did some research for a new midsize TV with Roku and decided to punrchase this TCL 49" Series 5 TV on Black Friday weekend. It sat in its box unopened until Super Bowl Sunday when I mounted it on the wall and cut it on for the first time. Instantly there was a group of vertical lines about half an inch wide and perpendicular horizontal black lines overlaying the picture on the screen. I took the TV back to Best Buy because I had purchased a two-year warranty through them. Instead of replacing the TV they gave me a repair notice and told me it would be probably 2 weeks for Best Buy to repair my TV at their service center. I was not happy with the TV based on the fact that it had a defect upon its first use and I'm very unhappy with the Best Buy agreement. Now looking more closely at the Best Buy service order it says my TV was "dirty." It wasn't dirty. I had just installed it. It seems they were just looking for a reason to repair and not replace. I would not recommend this TCL TV nor Best Buy service agreement.

I wish I could give this tv 5 stars but i can't, like the title says, this TV is almost perfect. I love how it has Roku built inside of it and offers all the streaming services I need, but there is one big problem and that is the Panel itself. It looks good for the most part, but off to the top right of the screen there is a...dark area, its not noticeable at all when you're watching something in widescreen but its totally noticeable in full screen formats and also in bright scenes, Its really noticeable when i'm gaming. I've tried adjusting the brightness and everything to make it go away but nothing works, you can't really see it when you are standing right infront of the screen but you can notice it at normal viewing distance. it wouldn't be a bother all that much if it was in the corner a bit or something like that but it is close to the middle of the screen. I think i paid good money for this TV and i expect the panel quality to be a bit better. I am thinking about returning it in exchange for a different brand. Such a shame, everything else about this TV is great, i guess i just got a bad one.

Believe it or not, this is my first smart TV! Coming from an older LCD, I cannot believe how amazingly thin and light this is! It must weigh 1/3 of my old TV. This made installation a breeze. My son recommended Roku and this TV in particular due to everything you get for $399.99. Dolby Vision HDR, Roku, and wide color. I thought Roku was a streaming channel like Netflix, but it’s just the smart system on the TV. You get every streaming app I can think of! I loved that right after I got it set up (about 10 minutes to create an account and get all my stuff connected and labeled) I was actually able to see Dolby HDR footage. The Dolby app that Roku gives you has a bunch of amazing clips with awesome picture quality. I already tried Netflix and Vudu and the picture is way beyond my expectations. Picture quality and the ease of use are a huge plus for this TV. The sound isn’t as good as my older set, but I’m told that there might be a sound bar in my future for Father’s day!

I have been using Roku for about 6 years, and mine was dying. I had been looking at 4k TVs and I waited 4 months for this to come out. It was worth the wait. I subscribed to Netflix and added the 4k receiver from DirecTV to go along with this. The picture is AMAZING, even on the standard HD broadcasts. I am not a gamer and have not tested this out for that. You for sure need a soundbar. 4k content is stil hard to to find but there is the YouTube and a couple apps installed to help you./ Pro: setup is super simple. You can name the inputs and there are big icons. Works exactly like a Roku box, but one less thing to plug in. The picture on my locals on antenna is so much better than DirecTV (channel setup is in the main screen in setup) Remote is very simple Loving private listening the iPhone app works great when i cant find the remote cons i still hate the pre programmed hot buttons, let me choose! sound is a little off, can go high or low wish it had a swivel base the area to attach cables (HDMI and antenna) is hard to squeeze a cable into understand this will just get better, but this is so amazing

I was so excited to purchase a new TV after my 11 year old TV needed replacing. I looked at reviews and websites and narrrowed my choice down and finally chose TCL 49" 5 Series. The excitement died as I continue to watch liveTV via cable, antenna and streaming service. The picture is no better than our cheap 32" 1080 store brand TV in the bed room. The blacks in background is horrible--so splotchy and blotchy if that is a word. You see the little box like shapes of different shades of blacks and it is especially poor when there is light or white in the picture the black areas around are extremely spotty. The other issue is finding the right settings. I looked and many calibrations online and tried several but something would always be off---cloudiness, reds super brite, dim looking, or overcompensated brightness. I shouldn't have to spend so much time figuring out how to set up the thing. For those reasons I am returning it. I am even questioning whether the 4K HDR stuff is even worth purchasing maybe just stick with highend 1080 HD.

I bought this TV as a dedicated gaming TV based on web reviews. It has very low input lag so is very suitable for a gaming TV, but I was concerned about picture quality. Don’t be concerned. This TV has a great picture! But be aware that you have to dig into the picture menu to reduce brightness and contrast, otherwise the picture looks completely washed out. When I first bought it I was very disappointed, but a little messing around in the picture menu and it looks great. Be aware that the provided “bright, normal, and dark” automatic picture settings do not effect the brightness and contrast. At least on my TV. Had to go into the detailed picture menu to lower the brightness and contrast. I got this on Black Friday at a steal, but even at regular price it’s a great deal, highly recommended for gaming or TV watching or streaming. Looks awesome in 4K!

The price point for this TV can't be beat, really. Works well with an Xbox One X, so far anyway. 4K content looks great, very little input lag, good response times. Viewing angles aren't great, so keep that in mind. Features the typical suite of Roku apps, which is very nice. The Roku features are nice and easy to use, but they do get a bit laggy at times. App lag only seems to occur when the TV talks to the Roku mothership over the Internet to do app updates. If you don't use Roku or connect this TV to the Internet / WWW you probably won't see this lag. For the folks who like to calibrate their TVs, this one's an odd one, to me anyway. You can't use the available TV controls to calibrate it, you have to use the Roku app from a mobile handset, smartphone, etc. Mobile handset / smartphone app seems to have a full-featured set of calibration tools. All in all, excellent TV for the price.

Shipping was great, had no issues. Upon testing it the tv worked fine. Disassembled my old setup, mount this, turn it on and watch it for about 15min only to have to screen begin to flash black and then back to the picture. No matter what input i was on or even while doing the factory reset it started doing it. I wanted to try this company cause i heard good things and they were reasonably priced but boy was i disappointed. Never again will i buy from this company. Spend the extra money and get the Samsung UN6900, the picture is 10x better and guess what it works no problem! BB was awesome though except they had me go back and forth a few times to get a new model even though i had the part number to the new tv I wanted
