Still holds up, so happy with the quality, brightness, contrast, and everything. TV looks beautiful in HDR Content and Gaming on my PS5/XSX. Can't ask for more from what I paid for this TV, having spent much more on more expensive displays and what I got for what I paid paled in comparison to what I seem to get from TCL. Every. Single. Time.

Defective TV

On Aug 3, 2023 I purchased a TCL - 50" Class 5-Series QLED 4K UHD Smart Google TV model 50S546 for $379. dollars plus tax for a total of $413.71. Since that time I have made at least 10 calls to TCL to fix issues with the television. Problems started one month after purchasing the TV.
First, the sound stopped working, then a grey screen would appear when I turned the tv on, nothing would load and the grey would run across the screen as if it was about to load. After taking a video, providing the video to TCL, and spending an inordinate amount of time on the phone with TCL, TCL sent a technician to my home to “fix” the tv. After the technician “fixed” the tv the the grey screen continued to appear when I turned the tv on.
In addition, the technician informed me there were known issues with the 50S546 tv. If the technician knew this then TCL must also know there are issues with the 50S546 tv. In addition to the grey screen continuing to appear, the following issues have happened: 1. The remote repeatedly stops working 2. I can go to an application, and when I select a show, the screen with all of the show choices remains on the screen while the show plays (I can hear the show, but not see the picture). TCL now says the issue is with the Google application, and, therefore, can't be fixed.
This product is defective. Problems that TCL fixes over the phone and in person just reoccur, therefore, they are never truly fixed. I was sold a defective product. After filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, TCL has offered to send me a Roku TV and allow me to keep the defective TV.

Great TV for a bedroom

Great TV for the price. I bought this TV for my bedroom and so far I am pleasantly surprised by its picture quality. Nice deep black and vibrant color. The Google TV OS is surprisingly quick and smooth. I have a Samsung Q80T in my living room and this TV comes pretty close to it picture quality wise. The lack of 4k upscaling is a noticeable however you get what you pay for. Viewing angles are poor and the picture washes out dramatically when viewing at an angle so I wouldn't recommend this TV for a living room environment. Overall I think this is a great QLED for a bedroom for the price.

The tv itself is fantastic! However, it seems as if the Google software was kind of just thrown into the tv and the processor (the brain of the tv) was not ready to take that kind of load. It can be laggy in the home screen and setting upon startup of the tv.

Good picture quality and budget-oriented TV. Google TV is bliss, but sometimes the apps are responsive (close the app (bro TV) automatically and return to the home menu while watching). So 1 star is less as the TV deserve 5 star

Hard to rate this TV. Either a 4 or a 5, depends on your expecations and how much you factor budget into the score. For the money it's a 5. Relative to the products you can get for 700-1000, it's a 3.5 -- and that's nothing to sneeze at.
Compared to my mid-high range 2017 mu8500 Samsung:
1) TCL significantly better blacks/contrast but local blooming is sometimes more distracting than edge lighting circa 2017. Trade off but edge to TCL.
2) Samsung wins motion by a landslide. 120hz native panel in Samsung, probably better proprietary image processing (yes I use it, usually)
3) Samsung wins color accuracy
4) Low res content is a tie
5) Samsung wins overall gaming performance due to better motion handling, but TCL has VRR and that's a definite bonus.
6) 4k movie performance Samsung wins by a hair -- the motion is just that much more refined, but the contrast on the TCL is a solid retort.
7) Brightness is basically a tie, if I had to choose I'd say Samsung wins by microscopic margin
Overall for comparison
New OLEDs - 10
mu8500 - 8
TCL 5 - 7
Samsung 690T and others like it - 4
Compared to other budget sets this thing is impressive. Compared to midrange TVs it falls short but is fairly competitive in some areas. Average person may not tell the diff!
Note: I don't care much about user interface or ease of use, I'm really just thinking about picture quality.
Sound quality was not evaluated, all TVs sound terrible
I'm giving this 5 because I feel like 4.2 is a bit low relative to other budget sets that I know are inferior.

The TV itself is fantastic. Great picture. The Android TV software and the remote alone knock this down 2 stars. I've always had Roku prior and thought I'd go a different route. The android TV is slow, laggy, and unresponsive. The lack of dedicated play, pause, fast forward, and rewind buttons on the remote also are a big detriment. Depending on the app you may have to press the center "select" button twice to pause. Or you may have to press a directional button to get to the media controls, then arrow to the play pause and click the select button. I keep supporting new Google products because I like the eco system but their TV interface and smart watch both seem to be sub par. If you buy this TV go for the Roku model. Maybe this can be fixed with software updates but so far I'm very disappointed.

I bought this open box because I wanted a relatively cheap 4k screen for my apartment after graduating college.
This panel looks excellent for the price. Sometime blacks aren't quiet black but 9/10 times I can barely notice. My only gripe is that the GoogleOS this particular unit comes with is extremely sluggish, and I'm not sure if it's a problem with the unit itself or GoogleOS in general, but the "Resume Watching" row with shows I'm watching on different applications isn't always accurate and will more often than not open an episode several episodes behind what I'm currently on.
Other than that though it works perfectly!

This TV is a great value for the price. I wanted a TV with good color and clarity but was not willing to spend $1600 to get it. The color and clarity are great, and the TV was easy to set up. It also meshed very well with my Roku sound bar and Blue Ray player.

This will be my 2nd 50", they have great picture compared to the big name brands at a much lower price. If you dont mind this tv not being at tech level with the new consoles, buy this. If you want a flagship tv then go for C1, C2, C3 or the S95B, dont even bother with Sorny.

Slighty better than the UG6 TCL 5 2021 is a very good tv cant beat for the price but with that said TCL6 2021 is slightly better even for a few 200.00 more.
No DCE on the TCL5 like the UG6 but the operating system is a little bit laggy. TCL5 gets really bright great blacks good color volume ok sound.
Motion is decent butbthere is blur in games and black smear like the UG6 unfortunately so if your sensitive to that may want to go with the 6 series. But the TCL6 has slight black crush like a OLED bout only down side there.

After my 2015 Sharp Roku TV bit it thanks to bad movers, I was looking for a new one. Wanted to go budget, but hopefully decent. Read a lot about TCL and it seemed to be a pretty solid budget option (still hoping the longevity is there). Not a fan of GoogleTV, but the Roku option wasn't there and was more expensive.
Negatives: Sound is BLAH. Terrible. My 2015 Sharp TV's sound was better than this. I have a soundbar so it's not a dealbreaker but to me it's tinny mostly high frequency sound and not that great. It can get loud but it's not good.
SOUNDBAR issues: Using optical SPDIF there is NO OPTION to turn off the TV sound and pass it through to the soundbar only, nor will the TV default to controlling the soundbar with optical. Had to end up connecting an HDMI cable (which steals an HDMI slot) in order to get what should have been a given. Again, my 2015 old TV handled that no problem! I hear bluetooth also experiences similar problems; haven't tried USB.
And I'm not sure if it's Google, but I do find the controls a little laggy at times. It shouldn't be a couple seconds of delay to pull up the settings menu, or several presses to switch programs or turn off the TV. Intermittent but annoying, especially in 2022.
Positives:
I will say, granted I don't have a huge frame of reference, that the QLED picture seems very nice.
Price again is good. It's a TV. I'm giving it 4 stars for being a good budget option that does mostly what it's supposed to, but the sound stuff to me is a significant red flag people should know about!

For the price range, this TV is great quality. The image quality may not be as clear for some videos as it would be on my laptop (less definition in faces etc.), for a 'budget' TV the TCL 5-series works great. The sound quality is good, and the apps mostly run smoothly. Buying one through the ''Open Box'' options saved me some cash for a TV that is in great condition.

This tv looks great for the price. It doesn’t match up to my TCL miniLED, but it’s also cheaper, and smaller for the bedroom. It’s still light years better than what we used to be stuck with when using LED screens.

The google TV software is not always working, I'm blaming google tv software because I see them as responsible for the other applications previously installed. Sometimes when I'm watching anything in any of the apps, it will shut down the app and go back to Google TV home screen.
But I found a good picture and good colors.
