2nd TCL, both failed at 18 months

This is my second TCL. Bought it because I already had a 55" 4-Series which at the time gave me no issues. One month after buying the 5 Series my 4 Series backlighting went out. That one lasted me 18 months. Now at 18 months into owning the 5 Series the TV turned on by itself one night and is now stuck on the red startup screen. Unplugging it does nothing. Factory resetting does nothing. The remote does nothing. The TV will just turn itself on and stay on the screen. TCL's support basically says I should've bought extended warranty due to their's only lasting 1 year. So after 2 failed TCL's both only lasting 18 months all i can say is if you buy it make sure to get the extended warranty.

Don't recommend it doesn't work waste of 500 dollars to the trash. it only lasted me 4 months and it died out. also happened to my friend. was watching HULU and TV went like if I was watching regular TV loosing signal then black and didn't turn on again. TCL provides worst customer service they don't grant the one year warranty because they want to see the damage and apparently my receipt isn't readable.

I've had this TV for almost four years now, and I must say, it's been an excellent buy! Firstly, the 4K resolution and Dolby Vision HDR combine to give a stunningly clear and cinematic viewing experience. Colors pop, thanks to the wide color gamut, ensuring that what you're watching looks as true-to-life as possible. One of the standout features for me is the user-friendly interface. It's a breeze to navigate and stream my favorite movies and shows, which is especially handy for those who aren't tech-savvy. While it might not be a high-end model, its performance has been consistently solid over the years – no glitches or issues to report. Lastly, I got this TV on black Friday sale, making it an even better deal. It's genuinely a good bang for your buck, offering pretty impressive features and reliability for its price point. If you're looking for a TV that offers great value without breaking the bank, I'd definitely recommend this TV.

I bought this set to replace a roughly 12 year old Panasonic plasma which has developed a dead area in the top left corner. I loved the Panasonic and wasn't in the market to replace it until it broke. So it will often be a point of reference in my review. The picture: I have to say that the picture quality on this set is really impressive at this price point. In most ways it rivals the unit it replaced. Plasmas are noted for their impressive deep black tones and frankly I expected to be disappointed when I got this set. However, I found it to be very similar in this regard. I am delighted with this aspect of the unit. In fact the picture is far better than I expected in almost every way. TBH, I only have one small complaint with the image. When the screen has a background of all one color, especially bright colors, the image becomes uneven. It is overly bright in the middle and turns darker at the corners. Fortunately I have yet to see a movie or TV show where this is a problem. It only becomes obvious on some commercials, so it is far from a deal breaker for me but is worth mentioning. BTW, the set comes with all picture settings maxed. I suspect they do this to try to make it pop in a store full of displays, but it is actually somewhat fatiguing in home use. I have my set on "low power" mode and have the backlight at 92, the brightness at 48 and the contrast at 88. When you first turn it down it will look to be lacking, but watch it this way for an hour and you will find it gives a very natural image. The sound: I have a surround audio system so I rarely use the on board speaker. That said, it's not bad. Speech is very intelligible, probably because they don't try to artificially bump up the bass beyond what a small driver in a flat box is capable of producing. I suspect many people will find it more than satisfactory. It is worlds better than the speakers in the very expensive Panasonic that it replaced. Roku: I chose this set because the picture was reviewed as best in class by a couple different sources. I didn't know anything about this system and in fact almost went with a ChromeCast set as I am an Android guy and used both CC and a FireStick with my last set. In the end I figured it really didn't matter since I could just plug those sticks into this set anyway. It took me all of about 20 minutes to realize how vastly superior Roku is to either of those systems. Super easy to use and much faster than either of them. I ended up giving both the CC and the FireStick to my daughter who just moved in to her own place. I love almost everything about Roku, but I don't know for sure which features are part of the system and which are specific to the set. It is super easy to add apps and very fast. Being able to arrange them in a way that makes sense to you is a great touch. Best of all, when I bought it I was completely unaware that the antenna section of the program offered a full TV Guide which is very similar to a conventional cable box. I have wanted for years to cut the cord but the thought of losing the guide along with fearing other functions that I expected to be more complex than they are had kept me from doing so. This guide is not perfect, but It is really great that they include it. As of Monday the cord is officially cut. The tuner: So far much of this review has been praising how well this inexpensive set stacks up to one that was roughly five times the price (albeit in a different decade). This is the section of the review where things come back down to Earth. First off, let's talk a bit more about the guide mentioned above. While it was a deal maker that they include it, it is wonky in its operation and really needs to be refined. First, while it is mildly interesting that you can go backwards through the guide to see what you have missed, this can also be somewhat confusing. I would prefer it stopped at the current time. What is worse is that the tuner won't tune to a channel unless you are in the correct half hour block. The blocks in the guide do not follow time. So, if you watch the end of a show at 7:59 and start searching for what to watch next, and the time rolls over to eight o'clock, you will get that annoying little error sound once you attempt to tune the next program unless you remember to scroll to the correct half hour block. I think it would also be great if when looking at future programming that when you hit the "OK" button it would offer you the option of a reminder instead of just the annoying error tone. I should think this would be a simple feature to add, perhaps it could even be done with a firmwear update. To the actual tuner itself it is probably the biggest disappointment in the whole set. I always kept a set of rabbit ears on the Panasonic in case of cable outages. I was able to get all of the major local stations without dropouts. With this set I only got about two thirds of the stations. Once I added a much better antenna, I was able to get all of the stations, but most do drop out on occasion. I guess I'll have to go to an attic antenna. Still worth it to me but the Panasonic proves that it wouldn't be necessary with a well designed tuner section. This is a disappointing pairing with the Roku system which makes cutting the cable so inviting. One more major problem with the tuner is that you can't directly tune to stations, even from the setup screen. I understand not having a number keypad. I understand not cluttering the guide with a direct entry option, but having this ability on the setup screen is essential. If, for example, you have a channel 19.1 near you but the auto scan doesn't pick it up, it essentially doesn't exist as far as your TV is concerned. Being able to tune into 19.1 is critical to trying to get the correct antenna placement to pull it in. As it stands the only way to test an antenna position is to spend ten minutes rescanning channels and hope for the best. This is quite unacceptable. Lastly stations tuned from the antenna have much lower volume than any other source, be it the cable box, Blu-Ray player or any other source. A small thing, but still more evidence that this section wasn't well thought out. Lastly, I enjoy being able to put a thumb drive in the USB port and be able to pause/rewind, but why require a stick? Seems as cheap as memory is that it would be simple enough to build right in. Perhaps it would give smoother performance as well. The remote: Unlike many reviewers I like both the small size and the side buttons for volume/mute. That is basically all I like though. First and foremost, why on Earth is such a wi-fi based system run with an infrared remote? A wi-fi remote like the ChromeCast and the FireStick seems like such a no-brainer. In fact, I think it must add cost to build in additional components in the infrared sensor. The lack of voice control also is a brutal oversight in 2020. Call me cynical, but the only reason I can figure for either of these exclusions is to help upsell. Disappointing. The four buttons at the bottom of the remote are useless to me as assigned. Since the Roku lets you arrange your apps, it would be far more handy to just assign those four buttons to the first four apps. I hope Netflix et al are paying for their inclusion on those buttons, otherwise there is no logical reason for this to be set up as it is. Conclusion: This is a great set, especially at this price. Clean up the tuner issues and add the option of a wi-fi, speech command remote to be purchased separately for another $50-60 and this would be an absolute giant killer.

First of all kudos to Best Buy for excellent followup as delivery time approached for my TV. Delivery was on time and quickly completed. The delivery people even put on protective covers for their shoes coming in, a nice added touch. Now about the TV. Okay, it's not a high-end Samsung but this TCL 55 inch TV shines from unpacking it to getting it setup and watching it. I was able to unpack it alone, put the feet on it alone, then move it to its final home, again alone. All along the way I exercised reasonable care and had no trouble whatsoever. Connecting it to the cable box was a breeze. Logging in to my Roku account, ( which is free so never pay for it ), began software updates which was done quickly. Then my services, (YouTubeTV, Prime Video, Netflix, Apple TV and some free apps) were added to the home screen from my account. Start to finish after delivery was about 30 minutes. The picture on the TV using default settings is amazing to my old, tired eyes. Upscaled content also looks amazing on this TV. My roommate enjoys watching older shows, which also look good. For comparison to the older model TCL this TV replaced I chose to watch a very familiar movie, "Jersey Boys", on Netflix to start. I was delighted with the difference. And the sound of all the music in the movie was decent as well as the outstanding picture. The picture of this TV actually compares nicely to some higher end Samsungs I've seen in friends' homes, at about half the price. One recurring complaint I see is the remote. The remote is designed for the Roku TV platform and functions well with it. The volume and mute buttons being on the side isn't as much an inconvenience to me as it seems to be to other reviewers I've seen considering it keeps the size of the remote smaller. There is also an app available for both Android and iOS that functions as a remote and can be voice controlled. The $329 price tag Best Buy had on this TV was as good a price as I could find anywhere else, plus free delivery made this purchase a no-brainer for me. In fact, I'm now ready to upgrade the smaller TCL TV in my man cave to this model, and think I'll finish then submit this review and order it. Last but not least, if you're on the fence, take the plunge. Don't over expect and this TV will very likely satisfy you as well.

I was looking to replace my girlfriends bedroom TV as she had an old 1080P LG LCD tv with giant bezels and subpar picture quality. I have a TCL 6 series at home which is widely known for its mid-range performance at a budget price. The 5 series is basically everything that’s great about the 6 series but stepped down a bit. Clarity and colors along with brightness are quite impressive. The only downside with the image is the dirty screen affect and slight artifacting here and there that you really won’t notice unless you really look for them or are on a screen with solid colors throughout. Also, the remote is absolute garbage. It requires you pointing the remote DIRECTLY at the infrared sensor. However, you can just download the Roku app on your phone and throw the remote in the garbage. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a decent quality looking 4K TV at a minimal price tag. Not to mention there’s HDR10 and Dolby vision

This TV has a great picture, very high quality. I use an antennae and for broadcasts or other shows such as from Netflix or Amazon Prime that are in high definition the picture quality is excellent. Reviewers say the picture quality is as good as for TVs that are hundreds of dollars more and I can agree. The Roku works very well and is easy to use. There is some free content with Roku, but you do have to pay for any streaming providers that require a subscription such as Netflix or Amazon Prime. You can also screen mirror a tablet or phone to the tv. The remote is a bit different, it’s very simple with just a few control buttons. The volume and mute controls are on the side. A bit awkward at first but not a big deal after I got used to it. And the remote has more functionality than it appears by using the purple multidirectional button. With it you can scroll through a list of all the current programs on tv and can select whichever one you want. The list also shows what will be playing in the next couple of hours. Set up was easy with no problems or glitches.

Value, Picture, ROKU just what I expected. TCL is a winner in my book. This 55" 4k was added to my home which already had a 40" 1080 & a 32" 1080. Setup was easy, sound is ok, remote is basic. I remedied both by adding my soundbar and using the ROKU app for a full featured remote.

I use this as a secondary tv in one of my bedrooms. It’s a great tv for the price. Picture quality is solid. I like the Roku interface due to it’s ease of use and the apps that are supported. I find that the volume buttons on the remote are a bit quirky but found that if I use the remote left-handed, they actually fall in line with my index finger. Either way, the Roku app for mobile devices is a great substitute that offers a keyboard for easier search typing. Overall, I am happy with my purchase and would happily buy again if needed.

    Very Good Smart TV

I wanted to use this tv for a while before I reviewed it to be fair. After a lil over a month I must say this is a very very good smart tv. Now I did have to exchange the very 1st one I got because the LED light on the tv itself didn’t come on when I had it enabled on in the settings which isn’t a huge deal but I was still within my initial 15 day return policy. I figured if any other thing fails after the 15 days I would regret not exchanging so I did and Best Buy’s Customer Service was very very helpful and got me the exchange delivered within just a couple of days and took the original one back. Ever since then My tv did reset on its own ONE time when I was watching my cable input but I think that was a one time fluky thing no other issues at all since tho. The 4K picture is absolutely amazing and breathtaking and even the sound is surprising good on it not great but plenty loud enough. Tcl did a great job putting this tv together as it looks like a premium tv with its hardware and extremely thin bezels roku built in is the cherry on top and they are amazing tho I wish they would add hbo max and peacock to the ch store hopefully soon after they agree on a deal. My remote came with Netflix Hulu the roku ch and Disney plus as the shortcuts on it. The remote works fine but I hate that you gotta aim right at the tv and that it doesn’t come with the voice search button on it so I purchased the voice remote on the roku website For 20 bucks ( cheaper than amazon ) but please be advised you can download the roku app for free and it does have the voice search capability on there and you can change chs without obviously needing to aim at the tv but I just preferred to have my main remote be able to do this too. This is a nice in between tv ( better than the 4 series yet not as good as the 6 series ) is what I heard but I would say if you can’t or don’t want to spring for the 6 series go for this one it’s very underrated but TLC and Roku make a great combo.

I literally don't think I complain about this TV! Easy to install and set up on my own. (Word to the wise, don't ever do this. It was at the same time a bit stressful taking out of the box and standing up with only 1 person haha). Overall the TV itself is pretty freaking awesome for the price. Picture is pretty dang impressive. While it takes a min to get accustomed to the settings, once you do, you'll love it even more. It's an overall solid budget friendly TV.

Great picture and value. I purchased this TV for the upstairs game room, couldn’t be more satisfied. Live action is better on this TV, then on my LG Nano which was more expensive. Mainly used for gaming and streaming. The Ruku feature is simple and ease to use; way less complicated then LG’s interface. I would highly recommend this TV. I wish I would have know more about this brand before purchasing the main TV in our living room.

If I had one complaint it would be that the ROKU remote that comes with the tv set needs to be remodelled for big hands & fingers...I can't hang with the measly remote...constanty ly pushing the wrong buttons by accident and mute & volume buttons on the side of the remote is the dumbest thing I have seen yet!

Bought this because we needed a new TV. We were using an old Black Friday special that I bought in 2012, paired with a Chromecast. Nothing was wrong with it honestly, it just wasn't big enough in our new living room. The driving point for us was screen size. This TV checked all the boxes for me - 55" is a great size, 4K (doesn't do anything for me but is a nice perk I suppose), and has Roku/WiFi built in. The TV has ample input ports and even supports analog via a splitter cable! Most surprising was the oddly great speaker quality... The built in speakers are very powerful and deliver a decently full sound, not tinny at all. Picture is great, color accuracy is pretty great, and viewing angles are definitely agreeable. There's a review of this TV on rtings.com that helped me reach the decision to buy, it's worth checking it out. Highly recommend this TV. I've been very happy with it so far! Cons: The remote is verrrrry limited to line of sight. It is very compact and fits nicely in the hand, though! And as a plus, you can use the Roku app on your phone to control the TV. Additonally, video streaming apps will fail to stream video once in a while (very rarely). It's pretty odd: navigating the app/selecting a video works fine, but then once you click, it acts like you don't have internet... The only thing I could do to fix this was restart the TV. This is an issue with the Roku OS itself, I believe. It's a minor inconvenience, at worst.

The color, sound and quality of this TV are pretty good. The apps it come with have a variety of movies and tv shows to watch. The only thing that is a bummer is screen mirroring with my macbook. You have to download their app to do so and there’s a ton of lag. That’s an easy fix with purchasing an extra cable. Overall pretty happy with this TV and the price point.

I can’t say enough good things about this TV! A 55” 4K HDR TV for $400 that has this good of a picture seems unlikely, but it’s true! I own an LG OLED and got this TCL TV for another room in the house and I don’t mind watching this TV as opposed to feeling like I just HAVE to go watch on the OLED. The OLED is still my favorite and still far better, but for the average viewer, this TCL will look very nice!

I felt that I needed a bigger TV since I’ve been spending so much time watching it during the COVID quarantine. I had the same panel TV, but the 43” variant. The 55” model has a few different settings comparative to the smaller model. Picture quality is definitely a huge upgrade in comparison to a smaller screen at a 8-9 ft distance. Watching Interstellar in 4K UHD was mind blowing, specifically when the IMAX Film camera shots filled the entirely of the screen. Gaming in 4K with the Xbox One X is beautiful as well with great responsiveness. It was easy to set up, albeit you will need two people to get it out of the box. (I found it safest, at least.) TCL makes this TV just like the others they manufacture, simple to setup and competitive with high end models for hundreds of dollars less. In the long run, I think this TV will match my needs for many years to come.
