Awesome TV for a bright room

Bright, colorful, and has a very good contrast.
I got it for my living room that has three huge windows.
And it does not disappoint. It can easily overcome the sunlight hitting the room and is very vivid. If you watch in a dark room or can prevent direct light from hitting TV consider OLED but this one is better for very bright rooms daytime viewing.

Where to Begin, right? Let me start off by saying welcome and if my direct points can help one person finalize their thoughts on spending then this was worth my time.
TV Model: TCL 65QM8K
This was the TV I really knew I needed:
OPERATING SYSTEM: Google TV (Excellent)
* 1st time owner of this operating system / user interface.
+ Select Wired or Wifi, Can't do both.
+ Check TV's updates, (latest is Ver 313 Android 14)
+ Keep your favorite apps updated.
+ Google Voice assistance is so needed and very Useful
* Turn off all Eco picture settings before diving in.
PICTURE: This is why I made this decision. (Superb)
* Google firmware vers 313 really provided an outstanding out of the box job. It will dl on 1st day of powering up. So I look fwd to future update improvements and new additions
+ Your Eyes & Emotion will make you relive your day of watching 4th or July Fireworks. It's that incredible feeling that makes it all worth it.
+ Bright, Colorful, Various Picture Modes & Preferences
+ Dolby Vision, HDR10+, SDR, Console. PC
+ Youtube videos for specific picture content will amaze you
+ Upgrade your streaming 4K providers, Netflix, Disney+ etc.
+ Cable TV, I suggest use a external streaming device. You can always finetune your visual settings. Just remember you limited to lower quality imagery. But you can certainly achieve satisfactory status for all Movies, News, Live Sports & TV shows.
- I don't use over the air antenna although I should try cause this model offers free over the air High Def content.
Connectivity: HDMI & Devices. (Better than Good)
- Should have had four 2.1 Hdmi ports instead of port #1 & #2
+ eARC port #4 is for your soundbar / receiver
SETTINGS: Don't be afraid, Welcome & Test your Choices
+ It ok to visit more than once, don't be a stranger
+ It's ok to feel overwhelmed at 1st glance or use
+ Read, Learn, Try, Enable/Disable Move buttons,
+ Make Mistakes, Challenge your curiosity
+ Factory Reset is welcomed and Redoing will be Satisfying.
* Time spent is Time worth.
TV AUDIO (Better than most, but your ears deserve more)
* In this day and age streaming sites and playing discs offer so much more than stereo. Immerse yourself with SOUND.
+ External speaker source is highly recommended.
- TCL has to show actual numbers when +/- volume. It's a huge disappointment not to automatically visualize it, but you can ask Google and it will tell you where your set volume sound is actually at.
QUALITY & PERFORMANCE: (Impressive) QM8K is Marquee
+ The build is certainly a sky jump over the QM7K
+ Performance wise don't let QM7K (great tv by the way) owners downplay the all around seriousness of the QM8K by saying it's not much of an increase. It's just a way to solidify reasonings and bending of wallet.
Overall: Im all bout QD-MiniLED QM8K
* I would not think twice of what this price has offered. I have nothing but enjoyment using this brand and upgraded model. Best part is I'm still learning what hidden power(s) I can unleash and what TCL/Google has instore for future firmware wise.
+ Is there better TV's out there? Yes sure, but not for the price and all around performance you actually will be receiving
+ As a Bestbuy plus member, I will be adding my Geek Squad 5 year protection really soon cause investing and resting your tech worries is just added comfort to your health.
REGRETS: I didn't get the 75"
* No I'm Serious, Don't be like me if you have the space and the wallet don't even hesitate. The 75" will outperform this 65" in more ways than you think.
B-EZ and Happy Holidays
PS. The 5 images are captured from Mobile> QM8K> Cable SDR form. So again, embrace and welcome your settings. The more you visit them the more easier it will become which will lead to bigger and better visuals.

I am happy with the tv for the sale price. It has good sound and picture. I would not want to spend too much more than qm7, as it not really noticeable better with standard content. This tv also does not to great with poor quality content, my much older cheaper tcl does a better job on items not in HD, but with full resolution content, it is very good. I wish the sound leveling was better, but it better than my other tvs, but still cannot hear voices without obnoxiously loud commercials and sound effects. I paid $800 like new open box, I dont think is worth more than that over a qm7 or even qm6. The bright room viewing is much improved over my budget tvs, but not as great as I expected, but considering the about the brightest tv you can buy, i dont there is anyway to do better. I do really like this tv. I cannot see a reason to buy a tv over 2k when this option exist. Does have better than standard bass with the subwoofers. I like the tv for the price for sure, best value for upper range picture, but is it needed? If this was not a special deal, qm7 is probably the optimal choice.

This TV is absolutely amazing! It was easy to set up and could be done by 1 strong person, but I would recommend a helper. The setup was easy and the contrast, black levels, and vibrant colors are perfect out of the box. This TV can go head to head with an OLED screen. I’m happy we purchased this flagship model for at least a decade of premium TV viewing. The Bang & Olfsen sound system was better than our stand alone sound system added to the old TV setup, so we prefer the integrated sound now.

I had a Sony Bravia but it was bought in 2019 and was only a 6hz panel. While that TV is still great I caught this on sale for 1300 and it is worth the money. Excellent picture and gaming features. While the sound is okay I would still recommend a sound bar. Added pictures after calibration.

Amazing TV. Sound is too quiet though. Not as punchy as the audio on newer premium Hisense TV.
OTA works well. I get good high quality feed from my TV antenna. Gaming is superb, and the low input lag is amazing. Can't feel any delay.

The colors POP!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
WOW. Did I mention WOW? The colors on this TV pop. Bright and beautiful colors. Amazing colors. That is the first thing you notice. Black levels are great too and make the colors pop. Viewing was still great from other viewing angles too.
We installed this on our existing wall mount and it worked fine. Lots of room for wall mount configuration. You will need 2 strong people to lift the box and install the TV on a wall mount – it weighs about 50 lbs. and is big.
The power cord is on the left side of the TV (when looking at it from the front). It even reached the floor wall mounted. Our old TV was on the right side and a shorter cord.
The metal bezel around the edge is very minimal and allows for the TCL Zeroborder. It makes the screen really stand out and not like you are just looking at a TV. Viewing was great from other viewing angles too.
There are 4 HDMI ports (2 support HDMI 2.1), an Ethernet, USB-A 3.0, USB-A 2.0, coaxial cable and an optical audio out for connecting. You can also connect your headset via Bluetooth.
Movie mode was optimal for viewing almost everything. There are several other modes to try; Sports mode was also stunning. The refresh rate (144 Hz) is excellent. Another nice feature is that it upconverts old TV shows and movies and really enhances them. Great for watching MeTV.
The only drawback was sound. It has 85W Bang & Olufsen speakers on the back side. But to really hear the TV you need the volume over 50%. Our old TV was fine at 15%. The sound was very good but not great.
Google Assistant and Alexa are built in.
There is a auto game mode setting for gaming and it was very good. We only tried it for about an hour and really like it. There is a pop-up gaming bar. 144Hz is the max gaming rate.
Some key specs:
TCL Halo Control System and QD-Mini LED
4K UltraHD Resolution
HDR ULTRA with Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HDR10, & HLG
Up to HDR5000 Brightness
Wi-Fi 6
Google Chromecast Built-in
Auto Game Mode (ALLM) with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro
The included remote works well and is easy to hold.
Highly recommended. Did I mention that the colors pop?

I’ve been looking for a new TV for the last few months and the TCL 65” QM8k QD-mini LED QLED 4K UHD Smart TV is one of the most impressive units I’ve seen! Their Zeroborder design looks cool, but I’m a sucker for minimal bezels on most electronics. The color scheme is vibrant, bright, and punchy. The black levels are deep! I don’t think I’ve owned a TV that could really deliver blacks so well. I wall-mounted it on an adjustable mount, and it looks incredible in my living room.
This was also the first time I was able to leverage eARC connectivity! High-quality audio output through a single HDMI cable makes using the built in smart features with my existing surround sounds system a breeze. Another plus for me is the high refresh rate. The TV handles gaming exceptionally well. The high refresh rate makes for a smooth gaming experience at up to 144hz.
However, no product is without its flaws. While the motion handling is generally good, there were a few instances of slight motion blur during or choppiness with high speed scenes during streaming. It’s not a deal breaker for me, but it’s something to be aware of. I think this could probably be adjusted in the settings, but I haven’t had a chance to tweak those too much.
I’m a huge fan of the TCL 65” QM8k. I think it’s a solid choice for anyone looking for a high-quality TV with great features and integrated Google TV. Whether you’re streaming or gaming I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

I just wrapped up 5 days of use with this TV. I am an OLED Junkie. I decided to take a chance on this TV for my bedroom and received it on a Monday, writing this on a Friday.
__________________________________________________________________________
This is a two-person set up. So, make sure you do have some help. Installation itself could have been a little better. The instructions for the stand were a little confusing at first, so make sure not to jump ahead. I do like that TCL gives different adjustments to installing the TV stand depending on how high up you want the TV to sit.
__________________________________________________________________________
Anyways, back to the meat and potatoes. As I stated, I am an OLED guy. I was a little nervous getting this TV but, I am big Google TV OS guy. I saw some hype built around the QM8K and how it could potentially compete with OLED panels, and let me just say, they weren’t kidding. For being non-OLED, the black levels are incredible. With the lamp on in my room or off, the sun slightly shinning in from my window, it truly blows me away how deep the blacks with natural light or in a dark room.
__________________________________________________________________________
The black levels aren’t the only impressive things, as the colors themselves POP. Everything is vibrant, the color schemes are fantastic. TCL’s software also does a really great job at identifying content and showcasing image quality greatly. If you are someone who doesn’t want to tinker around with color schemes and settings, the default options and modes offered will still be the eye candy you’re looking for. Vivid mode, filmmaker mode, sports, standard, a good amount to pick from. You can adjust gamma levels, contrast levels, brightness, make the black levels even deeper. I haven’t noticed any motion blur, judder or jelly effect, picture quality just top notch. I don’t really play video games anymore, but I’m half tempted to bring one of my consoles to the bedroom just to test it out on this beauty since I know it’s capable of unleashing all the gaming power visuals I need.
__________________________________________________________________________
I want to touch on another review from another reviewer on this product. I saw they had a lot of negative things to say about the sound/audio quality. I am not sure if they have a defect out of the box or might be a setting issue, but I am completely stunned by the stock speakers. Hands down, without a doubt, THE BEST speakers I have ever had come standard in a TV. When you see the Bang and Olufsen logo, you recognize it for its sound quality. Obviously, a lot of companies use marketing tactics and partnerships with some of these brands as selling points, but whatever the case is here, all I can say is, these are the best I’ve experienced. Sound is crisp, clear, STRONG, great bass to it for being stock speakers. You have a lot of options to customize the sound settings too. TCL has this ‘Beosonic’ setting tool you can use to customize the type of vibe you want with your sound. Along with this, you still have your settings like theater/movie mode, sport, and so forth, along with adjusting treble and bass in general. I like the nice touch on the backside of the TV showing the sharp silver design of the B&O speakers.
__________________________________________________________________________
The last thing I want to touch on is TCL’s Zeroborder. It’s extremely impressive. I lined it up with a 25cent coin and it almost matches its thinness. The structure in general is very well put together. The picture and image quality of the TCL QM8K is not only visually appealing, but the design itself that TCL put together for this series of televisions is also visually appealing. I will end by saying that this is the very first TCL television I have ever had. It won’t be my last, and I feel confident in recommending this to my friends and family.

I bought this TV to replace a 2017 Sony XBR900E that was still working perfectly but was needed in another room. The TV is in a bright room opposite a large patio door and skylights so needed a bright TV and in addition to being used for "Movie Nights" using high resolution streamed content it is often on for large parts of the day on news and sport channels via cable and I didn't want to be thinking about OLED issues with burn in, automatic panel dimming for white background content, and ongoing panel deterioration every time I used it, so I focused on higher end mini-LEDs despite the shortcomings with viewing angle that seem to be intrinsic to the panel technology used for them. I had bought a Bravia 7 for my daughter last Spring and liked the brightness and picture quality but was very disappointed in its viewing angle even when watching from a wide couch at around 12 feet from the Bravia 7 in her living room and it has terrible light reflection. This TCL QM8K promised to have a slightly better viewing angle, even more brightness, and better local dimming than the Bravia 7, and was even being favorably compared to the Bravia 9 in many respects. Reviews had raised concerns about color accuracy as delivered and with changes of brightness in high definition mode as well as poorer upscaling than the Sonys. The displays of this TCL in the Best Buy stores near me seemed to be intentionally making it look terrible with excessive brightness settings that were crushing all detail and horrible color accuracy. It felt like they were deliberately not being adjusted so as to shift customer attention to the nearby Sony, Samsung, and LG TVs that were displaying content strategically designed to play to their strengths. There is also always the issue of reliability but even the recent Sonys seem to have had some challenges in that arena, so service contracts from a reliable vendor like Best Buy are mandatory on all TVs of this type these days. The alternative Bravia 9 I would have otherwise gotten remains far too expensive. So, when the price of this TV briefly dropped to < 1K I bit the bullet and gave it a try. Thus far, during the first couple of weeks of operation, this QM8K has met all my expectations. As advertised, it is bright. It handles the room reflections adequately, better than the Bravia 7. It's wide angle viewing is better than the Bravia 7. What I have been most pleasantly surprised about is the color rendition. For the first week I was able to keep it adjacent to my old Sony XBR 900E and ran both simultaneously from an HDMI splitter. Out of the box without any color adjustments or other changes except disabling 'Adaptive Brightness' the TCL had color accuracy and saturation that to the eye looked as good or better than the Sony. I might eventually do more systematic testing, but for now the TV looks too good to take time away from just enjoying content on it. The various built in picture modes are easy to access from the remote and the menu that comes up across the bottom of the screen but hasn't required frequent changes from the defaults the TV chooses. There are 'Intelligent' versions of some of the modes that work well. Dolby Vision (common on Apple TV+ and Disney+) works great. 720P and 1080p cable content look great. Upscaling of cable was not noticeably different from the Sony XBR900E. The automatic recognition by the TV of content of different resolutions is perfect and, nicely, it briefly shows the resolution of the content on the screen when it changes. Motion clarity settings are straightforward and allow footballs to fly smoothly without compromising non-sports content. Remote is excellent and backlit. The TV is connected via its eARC port to a receiver with a 5.1 speaker system, but for the first week, while testing it, I used the built in speakers. They weren't the loudest, but sound quality was excellent for built-ins, comparable the Bravia 7, which has a good built in speaker system. Voices and picture are well synchronized using the eARC output. I have a UHD Blu-Ray Player connected and DTS sound from those discs works fine. So, all in all, very pleased up to this point. Hopefully it will be reliable.

I’ve spent a week using the TCL QM8K 65” TV with 4K mini LED display at a 144 Hz rate, and I have been very impressed by this flat screen TV! Not only is the picture unbelievably bright, with a panel able to reach 5,000 nits, the contrast at 30 million to 1 provides some of the best, vibrant images and darkest blacks I have seen in a TV. And TCL is able to do this at a low cost, with the 65” TV being quite affordable.
Streaming is the name of the game so far, and the QM8 has the ability to be used as a Google TV and all of the streaming apps are at your fingerprints. Whether watching Netflix, the Lifetime Movie Club, or streaming movies from a personal Plex TV account, the processor in the QM8K impressed with its snappiness, opening apps immediately without hanging up or glitching. Images were fantastic, and definitely a step up over my one-year old LCD display that had edge-lighting. This mini-LED panel is really something else when it comes to high-definition imaging.
And when most built-in speakers are considered an afterthought, TCL has taken things to a new level by installing Bang and Olufsen sound. When I first unboxed the QM8K, I was wondered what the small disks on the back of the TV were until I looked closer at them and noticed they were speakers. Generally, I’d mark such things off to marketing more than usefulness, but I stand corrected in this case. The speakers on the QM8K get loud, and they sound great. So much so, that I disconnected the soundbar I was using with the TV. Deep, rumbling bass, and crystal clear sound are how I would describe these built in speakers.
Some other items to note: 4 HDMI inputs, which is absolutely fantastic, a game mode that really brings out the definition in the 4K games that we tried playing on it, Dolby Vision, WiFi 6, Apple AirPlay 2 and Google Chromecast are some of the other inclusions. All in all, an amazing value.

Spent a few days and the weekend putting this TV through my daily use cases and there is mostly great things to say about the TCL QM8K. Colors, brightness, black levels and especially ease of use of the UI or menu systems and its explanations for each and every setting have all exceeded my expectations. I even appreciate that it has a tiny bezel with zero border (you do have to look close at your regular tv to notice most have borders). My main complaint that continues to bug me. This tv has an enormous foot/stand. It does not fit on either of my tv/media stands properly. Not an issue if wall hung. Aside from the stand size. The TV picture is great for premium streaming users. Still on the fence about the upscaling of over the air content. Also, the eARC is only HDMI 2.0 60HZ. My home theater receiver is HDMI 2.1 120hz and so is the PS5 and PC I also have connected. Read on if you don't mind long winded reviews or want more on my first few days using the QM8K.
My use:
My main TV is always on, as I work from home. Aside from watching shows and movies. I have a home theater receiver, PS5 and PC also connected. Basically I use it as a monitor. As I often have several static screens up for hours at a time. Mini LED has to suffice for daily use TV. My living room has several windows and light is an issue (I turn all ambient nannies off).
Shipping/Packaging:
I have bought many TV's over my 50+ years. TCL has packaged the QM8K far better than I have ever seen. My delivery was by freight truck. Came wrapped in plastic with thick edge guards on every side and corner. Even the regular box you likely will see in store if you pick up locally is far more robust that other brands. Lots of cardboard, Styrofoam and padding. This TV should arrive securely. I would say TCL could add pull tabs for the taped screen wrap on the frame as it was a bit harder to get the tape off to reveal the screen.
Setup out of the box:
This is straight forward. You do have to disassemble the stand a little to bolt it on the TV if not wall mounting (no wall mounts are included). The stand is mostly plastic with grooves to route cabling through it and can be mounted to TV with almost no gap or up to a few inches to get a very slim soundbar under it. Sadly, my 2 tv stands are 14 inches depth and the stand is 15 inches. This brings me to my major complaint. This stand might be for safety or from falling issues in the past. Or possibly I received a stand from a bigger tv, or more likely that the stand is designed to fit the entire line of tv sizes as a budget move. As I wanted this TV for a corner unit. I have it tilted a bit off axis of 45 degrees to see it from more rooms in my house. This required me to use shims to remove wobble as the rubber feet are not on a solid surface. Safety wise, large feet are probably good if you have earthquakes or kids/pets that might bump the TV. For me, its an eye sore that makes me ponder its place in my living room. Buyers with bigger furniture or wall mounting will not have this issue.
Picture/Sound:
This is why you are buying the QM8K. If you are a modern TV user and get your content from streaming services and mainly watch 4k or UHD content. Or even if you hook up a PC with a beefy graphics card or PS5. It really does look great out of the box. And most modes are decent with minimal tweaks. Many reviews talk about Filmmaker Mode as the set it and forget it. And it almost is for me too, but not for my over the air content. Overall, brightness and colors are excellent. In certain picture modes (9 to choose), blacks are good to great. I think the demo clips you often see on display models, is this TV's daily job when fed premium content. Should you need/want to to tweak the image quality. The menu systems is top notch. Each setting has a small window describing what that setting does. And if you use multiple HDMI ports. Each connected device can have its own picture mode saved per HDMI, or you get the set dialed in and make all HDMI ports the same.
However, If you watch mostly over the air tv from local stations that are not NEXTGEN TV, or basic cable. FOR ME, the QM8K does not upscale to a level that beats the TV I want it to replace. It upscales streaming stuff pretty good, even media files on PC look good. But, shows recorded on my Tablo (DVR for local over the air TV), while still looking pretty good. Are off a bit and looked fake'ish. News casters or anyone wearing white clothing appears almost reflective or neon, possible blooming issue. I just can't dial it in, and the same show on Hulu does not have that issue. Maybe it is just my equipment or cables, but it is there and my wife sees it too. I hope to find an optimal mode or setting as we do several shows a week from the Tablo. I see many just tweaking the film makers mode and call it a day.
Sound with the Bang & Olufsen speakers is good, potentially great, but as I put the TV in the corner and have a surround sound receiver. I will not rely on them or really rate them. I always prefer my audio to aim out to the seating area and these speakers seem to fire out the top and back of the set. It does get loud and no distortion was heard, so maybe you can get by without external speakers or sound bar.
Final thoughts:
I wish the set had all 4 HDMI ports the same HDMI 2.1 144HZ. Also, since TCL is hitting hard at the premium TV's in this price range. A heavy, but smaller steel foot would be greatly appreciated. Smaller remote would also be nice.
Two final observations that may have no relation for some, but I noticed the remote works for basic functions on PS5 after its turned on, weird. And my tv in my bedroom (Samsung) now randomly turns on throughout the day since this TCL arrived. I can't pin this behavior down yet. If it is the TCL, it may become my secondary gaming display and sadly lose its main display position.

There are lots of things to like about the QM8K, from the OLED level blacks, to the near reference level colour, and I would say the only noticible thing that it lacks compared to the Bravia 9 is the power of the Bravia XR processor. At times, such as when you’re watching 4K youtube and a part comes up that requires a lot of image processing from the TV, the UI will begin to lag, but its just the youtube menu being a second or two behind, and then as soon as you exit the video or the app, its completely fine again, so its totally liveable, because realistically how often do you need to do something in the middle of a video, and also the 1 to 2 second delay is very easy to deal with as long as you have a little patience. The picture of the TV is perfect, close to reference, but the Bravia 9 will of course be more accurate, but the QM8K may look brighter and more vivid, so to some people, although the picture is less acurate than Bravia 9, it may look better to them on the QM8K. The zero border design is nice, as well as the overall design and aesthetics of the TV and accessories. Compared to the QM7K, you aren’t going to be totally blown away, like you were when you made the first few hundred dollar jump to get up to the QM7K, you’re paying for 1% differences with the QM8K, just like with the Bravia 9, because the point is that you truly care about how accurate your TV looks, and if you don’t care whether or not your TV is completely accurate, then the QM7K will be fine for you. To put arbitrary numbers to it, the QM7K will have near perfect colour and contrast 95% of the time, meaning 5% of the time, colours may be oversaturated, or you may get some blooming and break the OLED like immersion. The QM8K would be more like 99% of the time, as its not 100% reference accurate, despite being close, and if you know enough about the TV to know where its weak points for blooming are, then you’ll be able to see a little bit of blooming with content that specifically hits those points, but that’s extremely rare to be able to find to begin with, so unless you’re really trying to make the TV bloom or halo, it’s always OLED like precision, and the off angle blooming is much better than the QM7K as well, being near non existent on the QM8K.

Really excellent tv. The qm8k series is what’s it’s made out to be. Coming from an OLED guy, it is 90 percent, if not more, there. Blacks are very deep. Blooming is none to not noticeable minimum. I don’t have to worry about whites bleeding through the blacks. Colors are rich and vibrant. The nit rating is exceptional, and in reality it is! I can’t have the backlight at 100% and watch content comfortably in my living room setting. It’s at 70% to 80% max. And in a completely dark room, 30% when playing on the ps5. It will excel for people who place this tv in a bright room. I have 0 complaints about this tv. Looking to eventually upgrade to a 75” size in this same model or, if in my budget, to a 77” oled.

I replaced a tcl series 6. I read reviews for months and originally decided to go with a lg OLED c5. The C5 's were on a great sale but my living room is very bright and I prefer a bright screen. The darkness of OLEDs gave me pause and the sensitivity to direct sunlight would have made the OLED purchase a risk. A source I trust rtings .com had a in-depth review of the QM8K . I compared that to other reviews and specs and it was a perfect fit. I use my Tv for console gaming, I have a PS5, Series X , and little used switch. The Qm8k's game mode is great with fast refresh rates and no lag. The intelligent picture adjusts to the lighting of the room. I am loving my TCL QM8K

I bought this for my son as his gaming TV, and I'm a little jealous! I have three QD-OLED's (77" S90D, 55" S95D, 65" A95L) and this QM8K is about 85% of the black levels and color volume, but twice as bright. He games competitively, and seriously loves it. I may buy an 85" for the man cave! It also sounds REALLY good, even has a bit of bass rumble!
