I’ve been impressed with this remote so far. If I had read the directions more carefully, though, I would have saved myself a little time messing with programming it for my devices. The documentation, by the way, is very thorough and easy to follow, which isn’t always the case with these devices. The owner’s guide says it’s already pre-programmed to operate most Samsung devices, Comcast cable boxes, Rokus, and JBL audio products. I entered codes to program it for my HiSense TV and Samsung sound bar, which both worked great. Then I noticed that part in the guide and just tried it on my Roku 3 and it worked great—no programming needed. If you do need to program it, you have three options. You can have it auto search the “top” brands which goes quickly, auto search through ALL brands which takes more time, or manually enter the code for your device and brand. There is a sheet of codes included, but if you lose it or need it later you can lookup codes on the Terk code support page. On the back of the remote is the “revision number” you’ll need, 341U1, and the URL to the support page. One slight issue I ran into with my Roku is I have it mounted out of sight behind the TV. However, I found that I could bounce the IR signal off a table underneath the TV and get it to work. If you have other types of RF streaming devices, some fine print on the box points out that Amazon Fire TV Stick, Google Chromecast, and Roku Stick are only controllable through an HDMI CEC connection from the TV. Just something to keep in mind if you have those devices. Speaking of streaming, the remote also has shortcut buttons to open Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and YouTube if your device supports that. If you have other apps you want to use, you can also reprogram the buttons as a macro which saves all the button pushes needed to open whichever app. Then, you just long press the button to recall the macro. I love that the remote is thin and rechargeable. This makes a lot more sense to me than having to replace batteries, although I suppose years from now it could be a problem if the rechargeable battery starts to fail. One other concern is what happens if the battery does drain completely—do you lose all your settings? I kind of suspect that may be the case because the instructions for resetting it say you hold the button for a few seconds then you have to recharge it afterwards. The reset may work simply by draining the battery. However, it’ll be easy enough to keep it charged, so I plan to avoid that potential problem.

Good basic remote, if it works for your devices.

The TERK rechargeable 8-device backlit universal remote is a good enough basic remote that seems to work for quite a lot of devices. It is an old-school style universal remote where you have to either look at the long list of codes and find the one that works for your device by manually inputting the code, or the remote can auto scan through popular devices or auto scan through all codes until one happens to work. It doesn't have advanced features similar to the (now discontinued) Logitech Harmony remotes, so you're not able to turn on multiple devices with the press of one button, if you use a sound bar for instance this will not turn on your TV then the sound bar and put them on the proper inputs. This particular remote can only turn on and off one device at a time and about the most advanced function that it has is the buttons that will take you to Netflix, Disney, etc.; and that's only if those particular buttons work for your device. That's kind of these remotes biggest flaw is that there is no guarantee that it may work with your devices, and even if it does seem to work, it may not have full compatibility so some buttons won't work or will work improperly. For me, I was unable to get the remote to work properly with my Apple TV, I couldn't turn on or off my Apple TV device, and rather than the volume remotes working through HDMI Arc and turning up the TV volume, the volume buttons on the remote would only work as up or down buttons scrolling through the menu rather than having any affect on the volume. If you just need a basic remote for your multiple devices this may not be a bad choice for you, unfortunately for me this was only partially compatible with some of my devices and requires me to still keep multiple remotes to be able to have full compatibility with my devices. It's worth a shot and if it works for you and accomplishes your needs this is a good remote, but it does have room for improvement.

I really like the TERK rechargeable universal remote control. The remote needed to be charged right out of the box. I was surprised that the initial charge took a couple of hours but expect it to last for many months of use. I also like that it's USB C rather than Micro-USB. Code setup for the device was simple - find your brands from the code sheet, press the device button for two seconds, enter the code and finished. I had no trouble connecting it to three different televisions, Fios One cable box, Apple TV and two separate sound bars. Like other universal remotes, you can lock the volume and channel buttons to any source so if you want to control the soundbar volume when TV is selected, you can make that happen. The remote has a backlight but it only works when you turn it on. On other remotes I have, the backlight button operates like an on/off and when it's on, the light comes on with every key press, not so on the TERK. There are also four direct tune buttons on the bottom for Netflix, Disney, Hulu and YouTube; however, these only work if your original remote has similar presets. You can also use these for macros, combining up to 14 key presses for each source. I give the TERK Rechargeable 8-Device Universal remote five stars and recommend it to anyone trying to clean up their viewing areas.

The remote to my LG smart TV finally died on me. I had seen other generic replacement remotes but this one seemed a bit more appealing in that it can be used for multiple items as well. It's a cool looking remote for sure and it's pretty thin. Very lightweight however it has a glossy finish to it so it's a fingerprint magnet unfortunately. It doesn't use the traditional AAA batteries as this remote is rechargeable. It charges via USB-C with the included cable. Cables a bit short but it'll do for now. Was able to successfully pair it to my TV, Blu-ray and my finnicky Samsung smart TV as well. Nice plus is that there is a Netflix button on this remote too so I don't lose that. It also has quick buttons for Hulu, Disney+ and YouTube. Nice little bonus is that it has a backlight button on it. It's somewhat dim and really only helpful if it's very dark but, eh, better than nothing I guess. Kinda wish I had more devices to use this with but it works great as my new replacement remote. Can't complain about this yet. Only thing I haven't been able to test is battery life so here's hoping it lasts a bit. Thanks for Best Buy for providing this free TERK Rechargeable remote for this review.

    Didn't Work Well For Me

I was excited to give the Terk remote a try, and while the design is sleek, it's rechargeable, and supports a wide number of devices, I found that it didn't work well for my setup. It's unfortunate, because this would've worked great to consolidate my excessive amount of remotes. The design of this remote is great with one major issue: the d-pad/vol/channel area is too cramped. I often found myself pressing two buttons at once inadvertently. Besides that, though, the button layout is great. I especially like the macro buttons along the bottom, which add some quick hot keys to certain apps or actions. The remote also feels great in the hand. As mentioned earlier, this remote doesn't work well with my system. My primary device to watch TV is a Roku stick, which doesn't have IR capability apparently. In fact, I'm not sure any of the 5 rokus I have in the house are compatible. This is the case with at least one of my TVs as well, a Hisense branded fire TV. I found codes to half operate the TV, but they didn't really work as intended. As devices have gotten more complex (built in streaming, WiFi controller/non-ir), it seems that a lot of universal remotes haven't kept pace. Unfortunately in my scenario, that seems to be the case with the Terk. It offers a lot of functionality, but just doesn't quite work with the devices I need it to work with.

I must admit, it sure is nice that I no longer have to keep track of more than one remote! If you're like me and you have multiple devices in your home theater, then search no further, this remote is the ticket! Unboxing was simple and painless, inside you will receive the remote, quick start guide, user manual and a very thorough device code list. They made the device setup a breeze with an easy to understand guide that explains how to get it setup quite well! There a multiple ways you can program each of your devices via; manual code entry, automatic code search (most popular brands), and automatic search (all brands). I tested all three entry methods with success but I found the auto search method to be the easiest, most convenient programming method. After quickly reading through the manual, I was able to have all my devices programmed and fully functional within about 10 minutes. I am finally able to throw this stack of remotes in a drawer and forget about them! This universal remote will give you a lot of convenience at a great value! I recommend you give this one a try!

In terms of remotes, this is a great replacement, especially if you're looking to replace one that's lost or are just simply looking to eliminate some clutter in the living room by replacing all remotes with one. For me, this remote hits the key things I like in getting a universal remote as most remotes included with some TV's that are universal tend to miss. - The first is backlit keys that are large, spaced apart/not too close, and easy to read with a logical layout that seems to work well with all devices I've tried it on so far. - The second is that this remote doesn't require any batteries and is rechargeable via a small USB-C cable (included) so it can charge off any USB port of which there are several on the sofas in my living room so charging is easy and convenient. I do like that it's USB-C too just in case I lose the cable as nearly everything I have uses USB-C now. -The third is that it's easy to pair and it's easy to operate several devices with just this one remote. There are several different methods but for my TV, Roku and Soundbar, auto learn found each one's code with ease. The best part of this remote is it's not "too simple" or "too complex" with so many buttons that it's difficult to use so I'd definitely recommend it. The only thing I wish they would have done is include a QR code on the back of the remote that you can scan with your phone that has a link that takes you straight to a page online with the programming instructions and codes in the event you need to program it down the road. It's a sure bet I'll lose the folded up instructions in the box which will probably get tossed anyway because they are too hard to read and impossible to store easily. Outside of that, I'd recommend this remote, it does the job well and is easy to use.

I wanted to like this remote, but it didn't really meet my needs. I have a rather complex home theater setup with a TV, a Google Chromecast with Google TV, a couple video game consoles, a soundbar, a Blu-Ray player, and a loose HDMI cable that I use to hookup my computer. My TV only has 3 HDMI ports, but I'm fortunate in that my soundbar also works as a hub and adds an additional three ports. I'm constantly juggling remotes, and I liked the idea of having a single remote to control everything. Unfortunately, this remote failed to meet my needs. After charging overnight, I started by trying to pair this with my Sharp TV. I followed the manual code process and tried each of the 10 codes listed for Sharp TVs (two were for Sharp TVs with ROKU, but I tried them anyway). None of them worked. I then tried the automatic pairing option. This worked immediately . . . kinda sorta? After pairing the remote to my TV, I was able to turn the TV on and off and control the volume. That's it . . .. Nothing else worked properly. Strangely, the up arrow opens my TV's VUDO app, and the down arrow opens the TV's built-in YouTube app. None of the other buttons did anything at all, and I was unable to use the remote to exit the apps once it opened them. I also couldn't access the input menu to switch to my various HDMI devices. I had to go back to my original remote to try and setup my other devices. Despite advertising that it controls streaming devices, and despite claiming that it is "for all major brands," this remote apparently does not work with the Chromecast with Google TV. The Chromecast comes with a Bluetooth remote. The TERK universal remote is apparently strictly IR. and does not have any Bluetooth functionality whatsoever. The back of the box does reference the Google Chromecast and mentions that the remote can control it via HDMI CEC. The code sheet just contains a note saying to consult your TVs manufacturer for instructions on setting up CEC. I was unable to get this to work. I currently use HDMI CEC with my stock Chromecast remote to control my TV using the Chromecast remote's IR emitter. I found no directions on making the reverse happen (controlling the Chromecast via the TV's remote). The TERK remote also doesn't appear to contain a microphone for voice commands. The TERK remote did successfully connect to my Sony soundbar, but it lacks the second set of volume buttons for controlling my subwoofer. The volume buttons only appear to control the soundbar itself. At this point, I didn't even bother trying to connect it to my video game consoles or Blu-Ray player. Despite its claims to be backlit, at no point did any of my keys light up except for the power button. The red LED on that button appears to work just fine, but that's it. I'm very disappointed by this remote, and I don't recommend it.
