I thought this movie might scare my kids, with the references to death and the Day of the Dead, etc, so I screened it before deciding to let them watch it, because I didn't really know what to expect. I actually enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I do believe that parents of small children who might find some things scary should screen this movie before allowing their kiddos to watch.

Not many people know about the Mexican/Hispanic cultural tradition of The Day of the Dead. The story in this movie is so charming and lighthearted... even though it's about being dead! Amazing animation and music make this super-engaging. None of the "dead" scenes are scary. They are all so colorful and playful it reminds me of a giant animated carnival. So I would not put this in scary category for younger children. Good moral lesson at the end :)

This movie has beautiful animation and really enjoyable characters. There are a few awkward moments (such as when 'Creep' by radio head is played, it sounds a little out of place) However, to offset that there are some great original songs. The Land of the Remembered is vibrant and colorful and I ended up liking it more than I thought I would. Since buying it I've watched it three times already, and I think I've enjoyed it more on subsequent viewings.

I accidentally bought this movie thinking it was Coogi and boy was I surprised. The movies share a lot of similarities but unlike Coogi, this movie was decent at best. Characters look like they were created from wood and look like marionette puppets without the strings. Story was ok but I had mixed feelings about it. Characters really didn't grab me nor did I have any type of connection to any of them. Kids may really enjoy this but not one of my favorites. Since I paid less than $11.00 for this I'm too upset. Could have been better.

I simply cannot believe this movie didn't get a nod during award season! This is one of the most visually stunning animated 3D movies I have ever seen! Hands down go with the 3D combo pack on this one - a must own for those that love 3D. Not only is it great visually, but I really enjoyed the story as well. I put this one right up there with How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Big Hero 6. I think this is one for the whole family, adults and kids alike.

Sweet story if two boys (Manolo & Joaquin) who grow up vying for the affection of Maria. The musician vs soldier are in a game of who will win her heart that spans the worlds of both living and dead. Creative, vibrant and life affirming, this story will entertain beyond Halloween. Might be a little scary for young children but acceptable for older kids.

Whether you have an interest in animation or even Mexican culture this film will please. Set during the "Day of the Dead" Dia de los Muertos, the films artwork reflects the bright colors and designs of the famous decorated sugar skulls and decorations for the holiday. A good film, good story and lessons to be learned. Not too scary for smaller children. Unusual animation as all the characters seem to be puppets made of various shapes of wood.

The Book of Life comes from the same creator of El Tigre, an underrated cartoon from Nickelodeon. The visuals and character designs are very unique. The characters are all very likable. The only downsides is that the story is a typical 2 guys fall for the same girl and not enough character development for some of the characters, including the main female character. It would have been nice to explore the cast a little more but that might have ruined the flow of the movie since. It's not that bad but it would have been nice to have. I heard rumors of a sequel a few months back so if that's true then I'm hoping they can do more with the cast of characters.

Saw this movie in the theater with the kids. It was very fun and entertaining, with a good story, a good visual direction and a nice homage to Mexican culture. Musically the movie was fantastic with a few surprise "old school" hits. Plot wise, you invest in the characters and find some of oneself in them. The story does not bog down or attempt to be more than what it sets out to be. A great example of telling a good story in a great way.

I admit, I'm a sucker for animation, especially original animation as this movie is and for Guillermo del Toro's work, weather he produces or directs or writes. I love his touch on the art. I initially purchased this because of the price on sale as a blind buy as a del Toro and animation fan, but I just love the movie. It's rich, original, and just a fun movie. Give it a try, I doubt you will dislike this movie.

This film is absolutely underrated! Saw it in theaters when it first came out and fell in love with the artwork and the characters. The music is wonderful and the message is great for kids. It also perfectly captures Mexican culture and the concept of Dia de Los Muertos, you could absolutely use this to teach a younger Spanish class about that fantastic celebration and what it means to people of Mexican heritage.

This movie appears to appeal to those enjoy learning about Mexican culture and history, even though the story line primarily concerns itself about two boys fighting over a girl. I did not the movie very interesting. The hero's journey and fate seemed rather predictable. Of course, the hero will pass the obstacles through demonstrating compassion. Of course, he will maintain that he will not kill the bulls. Maria will not choose that soldier for certain because she wants someone who care about animals. My relatives found the movie boring that I had to keep asking them to watch it because I paid for it.

I'm Mexican by birth, but have lived the majority of my life in the United States, and it was beyond amazing to see something that represents a small part of my Mexican heritage. The storyline is easy to follow and the animation and colors they used to depict the culture is spot on. Every time I watch it I get goose bumps and I am proud to now have something as beautiful as this that depicts our traditions.

I bought this movie for my daughter to watch but I really enjoyed it as well. I found the story to be well thought out and entertains for us both. I've actually watched it once on my own and it's a movie that I don't mind watching over again. Overall I'm glad I bought it and definitely felt it was worth it.

Delightful, funny and visually innovative, with a lovely Mexican ethos and Del Toro's customary startling mythological beasts and spectacular 3D. Mexican folklore is brought forth in a movie perfect for families. It's got comedy, romance, and action. Overall it is a heartwarming movie with a lovely story about heroism and getting the girl no matter what. A lot of fun, and ok for kids

The Book of Life is an important movie. I say that because not many true cartoons really delve into a concept that really captivates and relates to a Spanish-speaking audience. Now, Dia de (los) Muertos is a Mexican celebration but it has undeniably gone mainstream. And this movie delivers to the mainstream what the day is really about as it centers on a man's quest for a taken love in the underworld. I would not hesitate to show it every year to kids around Halloween time as it's not of the scary and spooky variety, rather it is of the adventurous (love) story variety. Enjoy!

I found movie great to show to students as a representation of what Dia De Los Muertos cultural aspect. After watching a documentary student were still not sure about what the day meant for people that celebrated the holiday. After watching film the students understood the feeling and attitudes that were felt by those of us who celebrate the holiday. It is no longer a "Zombie day" to them.

My kids liked the story (it was actually not bad for a kid's movie) but please be aware that the show basically revolves around death and the afterlife. I probably should have researched it a bit more. My 5 & 2 year old loved all of the bright and vibrant colors in the animation and the music but my 8 year old seemed to be thinking a lot about the subject matter. This is probably a great show to show a child who has recently lost a loved one. Personally, I prefer my kid's movies a bit more fun and mindless, they have enough time to deal with more serious things when they get a bit older!

The Book of Life looks a lot like a kids' film at first glance, but it is actually aimed more squarely at adults. Everyone should enjoy its fresh take on pop music, but there are some scenes that adults will love. Excellently choreographed and with a truly unique aesthetic, The Book of Life is a breath of fresh air in a genre still narrowly focused on myopic Disney tales.
