More than just your average zombie movie

    |
    Posted .

The Girl With All the Gifts is more than a "zombie" movie...in fact, some zombie fans might argue, like they did with "28 Days Later" (2002) and "Dawn of the Dead" (2004), that these zombies are in fact, NOT zombies, because they run fast. Well, I don't care, personally. If they are the undead and they eat human flesh, they're zombies. Anyway, this story takes place after a fungus-like plague has turned most of humanity in "Hungries" (what everyone calls them) or zombies. In Britain, the Army has managed to lay hold of a group of children who are a hybrid of normal humans and Hungries. The children are kept under restraint and taught in a class by Helen (Gemma Arterton), an Army teacher, who treats the children with respect and compassion, especially Melanie (Sennia Nanua), who is seemingly the most intelligent and evolved of all the children. But Sgt. Parks (Paddy Considine) is not happy with the situation with the children. Especially when he's got thousands of adult Hungries gathered outside the Army base fence, trying to force their way in. Also, there's Dr. Caldwell (Glenn Close) who has been taking some of the children away to cut up to try to find a vaccine for the remaining humans on Earth. When she turns her attention to Melanie, Helen is not pleased at all and tries to stop her. But it's at this time when the Hungries overrun the base and a small group including those listed above are forced to flee. They head for London and hopeful human contact but have to wend their way through thousand upon thousands of Hungries. Melanie proves invaluable in helping them as she's not in danger from the Hungries, but there is a danger of her slipping into a zombie state. The team have to use a human odor-blocking salve to keep Melanie in a calm state. This is a wonderful movie if you can use that term to describe a zombie movie. It has a lot of heart and soul, but there is plenty of zombie action for fans. But this is a unique horror/drama with a very touching ending. Much recommended, especially for fans of the genre.

    A Different Zombie Movie

    |
    Posted .

Zombie infections in the next generation. Truly "gated" communities with US Troops for security. A little girl who eats dead cats. A doctor who wants to find a cure and a teacher (the kids still go to school, locked in their chair-desks) who wants to save the girl, except, as they say, 'the girl can't help it!' Will the girl live, will the still-humans? Watch it. But keep an eye on your own kids!

    Not normal zombie movie

    |
    Posted .

This is not an action zombie film. It has some action in it but it's more about the characters and how they relate to the little girl. She is a second generation infected but she has thought and reason. Besides the urge to feed when she's hungry she's a sweet, normal little girl. You care for her but when she's feeding you can sense the danger. The little girl actress was very, very good. If you don't expect a resident evil shoot them up this is a great zombie film to get into.

    Not your typical Zombie film

I never even heard of this film until I was checking on what was scheduled to be released on Tuesday. Watch the online trailer for the film and became very interested. I've always loved zombie films...but the genre has been flooded with "hordes" of films that are subpar or either suffers from poor production values. This particular film is very well produced, has great acting, a wonderfully weird soundtrack, and the story was great. There is an interesting twist at the end of the film that I wasn't quite expecting too. I've recommended the film to a few of my friends and most of them enjoyed it as well. Definitely worth checking out if your into this genre and your tired of seeing the same ole stuff.

    Surprisingly good!

I wasn’t expecting much of this movie since I’d gotten it for $9.99 while on sale. Plus am not really into watching zombie movies but this turned out to be refreshingly so different & ended up loving this movie! Others don’t seem to understand the ending but I thought the ending was epic if you remember what she says earlier in the movie! Had bought 2 movies that day. The other costed $14.99. After watching both movies I had to lie to myself & convince myself that I’d payed $14.99 for this movie & $9.99 for the other movie because the other movie was terrible! That other movie should’ve been $9.99. Not this movie.

    The G with the G's

I thought this was going to be a fairly common "zombie" flick but it had Gemma Arterton so I thought I'd give it the once over. It was well acted and well produce, and had a nice little twist at the end with a philosophic challenge Senna Nunua posed to Glen Close and her resulting actions! 2nd review... so I copied the 1st here again???

    Not a vampire fan

This was a surprise vampire movie. The title was misleading (The girl with all the gifts), and I thought this was going to be more of a science fiction movie rather than a vampire movie. There were gaps in the story, like Glenn Close was the scientist that was going to use the vampire children to develop a vaccine to protect them from other vampires. It was not clear exactly how this was going to be done. Gleen Close appeared to be a little out of depth in this setting. Not very convincing. The other supporting cast were not that convincing, but then again this was a vampire movie, so it would be difficult to carry out their roles as one of the last survivors that were not infected with a fungus. This was an interesting plot rather than the usual virus that might convert normal people to flesh eating vampires. Disappointing overall.

    Blew my mind!!

Although this is a somewhat slow movie, the plot is so interesting that you hardly notice! You begin asking questions. Why are these children being treated the way they are? What is it that makes them the way they are? Are they innocent? Is this the end or the beginning? The viewer has to determine a bit for themselves on all accounts. The viewer has to think about what's going on. At the end, the viewer has to decide whether they are at the beginning of the end of life. What wins, good or evil? What survives, morality or immorality? Or is there a way to truly tell?

Slightly creepy with poetic justice ending.

Creepy due to the fact something like this could actually happen, especially considering how most government officials think. Not a huge amount of gore but not one for faint of heart either. I had to think about the ending. I did not get it at first. I liked that it was not predictable.

I read the book of this last year so I was pretty excited to hear that they were making a movie of it. Man this is a great movie!!! It's a little different from the book ( just like most movies) but overall a really great movie. If you're a fan of zombie movies then this is a must buy.

    Seemingly plausible zombie pandemic

    |
    Posted .

Characters reacted realistically to their zombie apocalypse situation. The movie's scientific explanation behind the zombie pandemic seemed remotely plausible. The doctor's ethic justifying "painlessly" dissecting 'live' child zombie experimental subjects in hopes of finding a vaccine for humans was thought provoking. Only criticism was the illustration on the disc case depicted a couple helicopters in flight, but we never saw any aircraft in flight during the movie.

    Above Par Zombie Flick

Okay, zombies are all the rage and we're being saturated with them. This has a different twist and is actually an intelligently written film - yes, there is actually a plot! A different spin on the zombie genre - predicting this may well become a cult classic among zombie fans. Some heavy hitters in the acting category - Glenn Close, Paddy Considine and the lovely Gemma Arterton.

Yet another great twist on the zombie genre

    |
    Posted .

In the book of the same name the story is told from different viewpoints, but in the movie the creators wisely chose to tell it from 'The Girl with All the Gifts', Melanie's, point of view. Incredible newcomer Sennia Nanua as Melanie is a young star to watch, in this film she manages to make you worry about & fear her. Why this did so badly at the box office and wasn't widely released is a head scratcher, because this is very good movie.

    Excellent Movie!

Honestly, I have to admit that I don't remember seeing a lot of press about this movie when it was in the theatres. After seeing it, I don't know why there wasn't. Yes, it is a zombie movie, at it's core, but it's just a good movie overall. Some of the review material I saw said "The best zombie movie since 28 Days Later". I'd have to agree and might rank it higher than 28 Days Later.

After reading the quite absorbing novel, I envisioned a film version, and was surprised at how SPOT ON this movie was! The acting was excellent, the settings appropriate, the script absorbing, and everything so very true to the novel (excepting a somewhat forgivable fork in the road for the finale portion). Unlike The Walking Dead, we enjoyed an actual resolution!
