    Good Film, Exceptional Blu-ray

    |
    Posted .

After reading about a new Best Buy "Blu Bin" reset (and price drop) I decided to drop in to pick up this film for my annual Halloween "31 Days of Horror Films" viewing list. I had seen the movie prior and enjoyed it, finding both well done and slightly unique within the found footage sub-genre. If you're reading this you've most likely seen the film already and want to know about the BD itself, so I'll move onto the disc itself. Package comes with both the BD and a DVD, and also includes a code for both Ultraviolet and iTunes. Film is presented in an aspect ration of 1.78:1 and features a DTS HD Master Audio 7.1 surround track. Picture quality is very good, faithfully reproducing what was seen in theaters. Audio is robust, being both subtle and bombastic where it needs to be. Bonus features are plentiful, though I can't comment on them as I haven't watched them. For informational purposes, the disc includes the following: Three Commentaries The Devil You Know: The Making of 'The Last Exorcism' (HD; 20:24) Real Stories of Exorcism: Interviews with Actual Victims and Participants (HD; 14:38) Actors' Audition Footage: Patrick Fabian (SD; 9:31), Ashley Bell (SD; 2:32), Caleb Landry Jones (SD; 1:40) and Louis Herthum (SD; 1:27). Prayer of Protection, a text based extra in English and Latin. If you're a fan of the film and are interested in adding it to your BD collection it's definitely worthy of the $5.99 purchase price. Recommended.

Modern creepiness with an old-fashioned twist.

Daniel Stamm teams up with Eli Roth (in the producer's chair this time) to take on that most popular of modern movie horror styles, the found footage or pseudo-documentary flick. At least since 1999's BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, which was by no means the first of its kind, shaky, handheld footage has translated into scariness. Or at least, it's supposed to. With THE LAST EXORCISM, Stamm sets us up with a group making a documentary for and about a pastor who's been performing exorcisms since he was a teen. Clever, witty & atmospheric, this movie takes a poke at the subgenre of possession flicks and lends genuine elements of horror in the process. Borrowing heavily from the kind of material found in 70s classics like RACE WITH THE DEVIL, Stamm twists us at the very last moment.

    A fair horror movie

A little light on the action and long on the story, The Last Exorcism is still a pretty effective horror movie. While the trailer gives the impression that the movie will be entirely about a demon-possessed young lady on a rampage, it is equally about the final exploits of one of those hokey healing ministers who after years of performing fake exorcisms starts feeling guilty and decides to expose himself and the trade for what it is through a documentary.

Needs to be seen with the sequel

You really need to follow this up with the sequel as a complete viewing experience. On its own it is an ok film. With the sequel it becomes a more solid film as it brings the story full circle. I could see it moving on from Last Excorcism 2. But the two movies together complete the story.

this one is shot documentary style...it starts off a bit slow but keeps you curious and engaged...if you have the patience to see the payoff its worth it...dont miss any detail or else you will get lost...its a must see if you like small budget flix with rich plots and climatic endings...

Although there have been too many movies about possession the last few years, this one is a cut above.

    Sucky ending (no spoilers)

This movie has all the makings of a really solid horror/possession movie, but the almost sci-fi ending just didn't fit with the rest of the movie. I still enjoy the flick for what it is, but I wish for a better ending.

    OK, but....

It has a documentary type feel and that is not something I care for in my movies. Others will feel different. Overall, it can be an edge of the seat type at times with the acting ranging from good to not so good.

Great movie for true horror fans!

This was a great first person point of view exorcism film! I like the plot, mostly because there are a lot of hokey evangelic preachers out there that exploit people for money and dont even believe in what they are doing. In this film, one of those preachers gets a wake up call when he comes across the real thing. I personally have studied exorcisms both from a psychological and theological aspect. About 85% of them end up being things like epilepsy, schizophrenia, or some other scientifically explainable ailment. However, whether you choose to believe or not, there are that 15% that cannot be explained and fall under the category of paranormal/ demonic possession. If you like this movie, I highly recommend The Exorcist, Exorcism of Emily Rose, and The Rite! All of which are based on actual events!
