The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild[1] is an action-adventure video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U video game consoles. The game is a part of the The Legend of Zelda series, and follows amnesiac protagonist Link, who awakens from a 100-year slumber to a mysterious voice that guides him to defeat Calamity Ganon before he can destroy the kingdom of Hyrule. The title's gameplay and mechanics constitute a departure from the series' usual conventions, featuring an open-world environment, a detailed physics engine, high-definition visuals, and voice acting. Announced in 2013, the game was initially planned for release as a Wii U exclusive in 2015, but was delayed twice prior to its release on March 3, 2017. Breath of the Wild was a launch title for the Switch, as well as the final Nintendo-produced game for the Wii U.

You probably do not need this review but since you are reading it anyway my only complaint with a stellar experience is that the Wii U version and the Switch version are on hardware that is just not up to the task of pushing the limited graphics that this game has. Framerate issues are horrendous if you are coming from other franchises with 30-60 frames no problems. Even worse if you have a decent rig and are used to 90+ FPS. That being said, it's still a 90/100 game or 5/5 stars. There is just too much to love to dock a star for this. I got over the framerates and just accepted the limitations and that one day I would just pick up the HD remake to play it without these problems. For now though, there is a bit of nostalgia having system slowdown like the original NES title did. Not good nostalgia, but still nostalgic. If you have a WIi U this is a must own.

Open World Environment is what makes this game shine. The only thing negative is the starting village is so far away and having to get there by running and climbing took a very long time. Otherwise once you get your horse, the game really opens up.. Great challenges and side quests throughout the land. By far one of the best Zelda games made.

Breath of the Wild actually harkens back to the original Legend of Zelda with it's drop you into a world, go anywhere, do anything nature, but because of the freedom they give you, don't expect a story that is as engaging as previous titles in the series. Still though, I've spent nearly 100hrs exploring the game's HUGE world and enjoyed nearly every moment of it. Despite some noticeable frame drops, this game is gorgeous, Nintendo is better than anyone at making up for a lower powered system by picking a great artstyle....but this latest Zelda is pushing the Wii U to its limits. Must buy either here or on the Switch!

Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an amazing game. I have the Wii U version as at age 43 not sure I'm buying the Switch (who am I kidding if that's where future Zelda games are, I'm in). BOTW is a departure from most Zelda games. It is a totally open world, you can climb every tree, rock, bldg, mountain and go everywhere. And you can get into things you're not ready for too, it's not a point a to point b game. Only thing I miss is the Hookshot! At first I didn't like it that weapons weaken or wear out as you use them but now I'm used to it. And honesty if you whack a hundred goblins metal guardians with a sword it should wear out. Watch out for lightning!!! So far I have played hundreds of hours, 20 in 1 binge filled day and I loved it. If you like Zelda games you MUST play!!!

I'm only scratching the surface of this game, but very early you realize how incredible this game truly is. It's an immersive experience, that draws you in from the very start. I'm mainly a PS4 / PC player, and going back to the Wii U took some getting used to, so the controls do take a little time to adjust. However, that's no downside - controls are fluid. The world is a work of art. Some of the scenes and views are amazing, especially given the hardware is a bit dated at this point. I think if this game was a Wii U launch title, the console would have sold much better, to be honest. If you have a Wii U, buy this game immediately. If you were fortunate enough to get a Switch, you're probably not reading this review because you're playing BotW right now.

    Game itself is excellent, but...

Let me start off by saying that I have not had this much fun with a video game since I was a child. The game world is beautiful, alive and responsive to your every choice. Enemies are hilariously smart and resourceful when it comes to combat, this is true to the point where you actually have to think how to approach an enemy camp instead of going Rambo on everything and nothing touching you. The character design is excellent and the art direction beautiful and adequate. The story is compelling even though every Zelda game has practically the same plot minus some twists. Now my complaints are not really with the game itself, but with how it performs in both the Switch and Wii U. There are VERY noticeable frame rate drops in various parts of the game. This is due to Nintendo's (poor) choices in hardware. There are times where the game turns into a slide show like during extensive battles and when approaching towns. My last complaint is with the TERRIBLE voice actors. With the scale and hype that this game has created for the last 4+ years, you would think Nintendo would have set high priority to the quality of the talent behind the FIRST voiced Zelda game. It is SO bad. Halfway through sentences, the voice actors seem to remember they are supposed to be pretending to have a British accent and when they do remember, they do it quite poorly. All in all, I must say that with these flaws the game is still immensely enjoyable and loads of fun. The only thing holding the Zelda franchise from being perfect is the pathetically underpowered platforms it is released on. I am a Nintendo fanboy and have bought nearly every game available for the Wii U. I am approaching the Switch with more caution even though I have enjoyed my Wii U more than any other console I have purchased since my days with the PS2/Gamecube. In conclusion, buy this game, you may complain a bit at times but you will not stop playing it or regret the purchase.

I have been a fan of of Zelda games since Ocarina of Time. One of the things I liked about that game was the feeling of starting off small and entering a larger world of excitement and adventure. Breath of the Wild has certainly recaptured that feeling for me like no other Zelda game since. It is huge! Dare I say EPIC! There is so much to explore, activities to do, small quests to complete. The characters are well developed and a fresh twist on the classics. I like seeing the Zora and Gorons back. The trials are fun and getting more challenging as I go. Tons of different weapons to find and a lot of cooking. Ok maybe a bit too much cooking/hunting/gathering for my taste but other than that I love this game!

As a long standing fan of The Legend of Zelda since the days of the original Nintendo, and having a strong affinity toward the Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo 64, I would say that this iteration has been too heavily influenced by the moving tide of modern video gamers. Even still, Breath of the Wild still receives high marks in my book because of the amount of things to do, places to go, and the story behind it (don't worry - no spoilers here). Outside of the longer load times upon first bootup and after dying - because I bought the wii U version, there are only a couple of things that irritated me (and they really aren't that big of a deal, regardless): 1) Weapon durability degrades over time, which is really annoying. This is not something I enjoy dealing with in any video game, really, but in Breath of the Wild, it seems like you always have to be scrounging for weapons and it's always at the forefront of your mind - it can be distracting if you are not careful. 2) Poor inventory management: I get it, Link doesn't have much space on his person for an infinite amount of items (and there are *a lot* of items in this game), but man... It felt like I needed to devote the entirety of the first part of the game to finding Korok seeds in order to expand my inventory. All in all, this was - is - a great adventure. The graphics, even on the wii U, are great, and I immediately felt at home in the kingdom of Hyrule once again after a small learning curve. There is much to be done, and even after 120 hours, there is still so much to do (even outside the forthcoming DLC) that I don't know that anyone but the most easily bored can find a way to overplay this game. Oh, and make sure you have your amiibos ready for this one - they are surprisingly helpful.

What more is there to say that hasn't already been said? This is a great game all around. It's innovative without straying to far from what fans are used to. There's plenty to do, sometimes so much so that you completely forget your previous objective, but that's part of the fun. Exploring actually feels rewarding and I found myself getting sucked into this world for hours. I like that combat requires a bit more strategy, but it's never too difficult once you get some decent gear. Lovely voice acting for the most part, beautiful cut scenes, creative puzzles, and likable characters. I can't wait to see what else Nintendo has in store for Zelda fans!

If for whatever reason you couldn't or just chose not to buy a Nintendo Switch, but still have have that Wii U you bought for Smash Bros or Mario Kart (or Zelda as the case may be), this is a fine version of the game. Aside from the fact the its 720p instead of 900p on Nintendo Switch (docked), and a few framrate drops here and there, the Wii U version of the game is still the amazing game it is on Nintendo Switch with very few other significant differences between them and recommended for those who have a Wii U and want to wait until the Nintendo Switch gets more compelling software and the launch period issues have been worked out.

This is perhaps not the best game ever made but it is certainly the best game in a very long time. In my opinion the only weak part of the game is the dungeons and bosses. They simply arent very challenging or different from each other. That being said the main attraction to this game is the exploration of Hyrule. This is where the game really shines. I have logged over 100 hours and have still not seen everything this game has to offer. I did notice some frame rate issues and the occasional long load time but these problems are easy to overlook when playing such a great game. A must buy for any wii u owner.

After 71 hours of gameplay, I can attest this game is definitely a masterpiece. I felt all throughout like I last did with A Link to the Past; my favorite Zelda game. After beating BotW, I can safely say it instantly rose among the top of my favorite Zelda games. The game was obviously optimized for the Wii U GamePad. The motion-aided aiming controls were as excellent as I found them to be in games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss on the PS Vita. You don't have to aim all the way via motion controls. You do your usual aiming via the right analog stick, bring the crosshairs within range of your target, then use the motion controls for that final pinpoint precision aim. It was flawless, IMO. Now, this, is the proper use of motion controls. I cannot imagine having this same flow when playing in handheld format on the Switch, though; as it is exactly what playing on the Wii U GamePad screen is like. You have to tilt the screen when aiming to at least 45 degrees at times; which took me away from the visual dynamic slightly. But the most important reason why it just won't play with motion controls as beautifully as it did with the Wii U GamePad on the Switch is during some of the shrine puzzles; which are so easy to do with motion controls; but would prompt you to use that tablet like a literal plank, twisting it upside down and sideways to balance one or several rolling balls, etc. I will admit, it took me a while to get into the gameplay; primarily because I went into it right after finishing-up with Horizon: Zero Dawn on the PS4. At this point, tbh, I don't consider one game to be superior to the other. They are their own entity, each offering as polished an experience as any gamer could ask for. But, as I said, I will go on to admit that it did take me a while to really get into BotW. It may have been just a couple of hours out of the whole 71+ hours I invested into it, but those were 2 solid hours that kept taking me away from the experience from not fully grasping the textures and solid sharp colors I got so used to seeing in games like, even, Mario Kart 8; or the funny climbing mechanics of BotW (akin to Spider-Man) that I found downright unimaginative at first glance. But all of these and more managed to quickly find their way into a very congruent gameplay experience, shock-full of what I now consider awe-inspiring graphics. In the end, the textures were there when they needed to be; and so did the sharpness in graphics as well as solid colors. It is an art style akin to a waterpainting; which I absolutely love. It reminded so much of J.R.R. Tolkien's personal illustrations for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings; for which he used watercolors. He, too, had a predilection for depicting flora and landscapes with inlaid ruins and fantastic characters. Tolkien is my favorite writer. Needless to say, I was right at home.

This is the most in depth Zelda game ever made. There is so much to do so you can easily put 200 hours in it. However this is not required if you want tot do the main story you can get through it probably in 30-40. This iteration adds a lot of new things to the series. For instance there is cooking to restore health. Lots of weapons and armor that can be upgraded. being able to climb almost anything and the game is completely open world. Anyway it is the last title that was made for the Wii U so you should be it up. It will not disappoint. Be warned though it is harder than all the previous Zelda games.

I was blown away by this game. This is the first Zelda to give players an open world to explore and complete all at their own pace. Don't feel like doing the story? Go on a supply run instead. You can lose yourself just wandering around with no direction and still stumble upon side-quests, towers, shrines, and hidden weapons giving you an immense feeling of satisfaction. I've sunk so much time into this game and there's still tons more to do. They've packed it full of things to do and explore. I have nothing bad to say about this game. This is definitely game of the year material.

Hi! I have been playing the Zelda console games since the beginning and watched the franchise change over time. I'm playing the WiiU version for what it's worth. This is not your traditional Zelda game, but it is a good play none the less and worth your money. The world is huge, bigger than any world before and you can interact with just about everything. There is a ton of attention to detail which can be a bit distracting. The cooking mechanic for example I find to be cumbersome and time consuming. It is a great idea, but the practice of it really slows the game. I am also not a big fan of the weapons and shields breaking after X amount of use with as yet no way to repair them. Named weapons are repairable but at great expense. I have completed several quests and done zero online research for tips so others may have a different maybe even a better experience. You will die a lot as you learn about the strength of the bad guys. The game is pretty to look at in a anime sort of way. As you know, Nintendo tends to stay away from "real-world" realism with graphics favoring more cartoonish characters. Nintendo has borrowed the sneaking around/stealth tactic from other games which also creates another dimension. You don't always have to straight up fight. I recommend the game. Some Zelda purists will be unhappy with it but as video games go, this is a winner.
