Robert Eggers is a distinctive voice in contemporary cinema. His previous works, The VVitch and The Lighthouse, are praised by many as unique examples of "elevated" horror. In The Northman, he strays away from the genre, but keeps developing the mysticism (and mythos) of his characters. The film is surprisingly heavy on the Viking spirituality and mythology, and less surprisingly, on the britality of the times. All cast members give praiseworthy performances, particularly given how physically-demanding some of their roles are. The story is timeless (based on a Viking legend that served as basis for Shakespeare's Hamlet). The score is ever-so-powerful. Even if this may be my least favorite of Eggers, it is a worthy successor in his filmography.

I really liked the director’s previous two films, and thus had high expectations for “The Northman”. While this movie is good, it just did not grab me like “The Witch” and “The Lighthouse”. That being said, there are some great sequences and visuals in this film. It is entertaining enough, just don’t expect the same depth of story as the director’s previous movies.

The Northman was a good Viking Age movie. Alexander Skarsgård plays his role well as Prince Amleth, the wronged son of King Aurvandill who embarks on a murderous quest for revenge and what was stolen from him. Make it part of your Viking Age movie collection.

Just to let people know, this movie is very very dark. It follows norse way of living ,back then. The in-house fighting and treachery is pretty spot on. The acting can be a little wooden at times, but over all good. This movie is hard to judge. At times I wanted to turn off, but I needed to see how it ends.

I don't generally enjoy historical dramas because too many are poorly done or overly gory. This movie was better than I expected and got me back into learning about both Viking and Russian history. Also, it doesn't hurt that Anya Taylor-Joy, one of my favorite actresses, is in it!

It was an interesting film. There was a distinct European pattern to the story-telling; in both the way the script was written and the way the mystical beliefs were portrayed.

It's so underrated and story driven in a way that people wouldn't expect. It's not a horror or psychological thriller like Egger's previous films but the setting is very well researched and beautifully shot. This Norse rendition of Hamlet is phenomenal slow burn. Amazing cast as well I would definitely recommend this.

I really do think this Icelandic saga is where Shakespeare got the idea for Hamlet. It’s good but the directors first two movies were better in my opinion.

Alexander Skarsgaard makes for the great Nordic warrior bent on vengeance. There is a great deal of action and mysticism with several twists. You feel like you are back in ancient times.

Bought this movie before seeing it based on the time period it's set in, trailer and great reviews. The movie was surprising and unexpected. Visuals were awesome and story wasn't far off from original Norse myth. As a long time history teacher, it is highly recommended.

An entertaining tale of revenge with great story, visuals, and action with a visceral ending. Rumor has it this story from Norse lore is the basis for William Shakespeare's Hamlet. "Hamlet" is an anagram for the main character "Amleth."

Been trying to find a 4K with slip and it I coudn't but i really wanted to watch this movie so bad and wanted to own it ASAP glad I purchased it.

The Northman is one of my favorite movies i’ve seen in a long time. The acting is superb! The cinematography is breathtaking. I recommend this movie for those who love Revenge tales.

The acting was good, The story line was if it had been taken from Sheakspear's Hamlet ,Then played as vikings. The whole brother killing brother so he could have his wife thing.
