This is undeniably one of the greatest horror/thriller films of all time. Now this film has been given a facelift that really brings it to life. It sports one of the best 4K transfers out there and is definitely a reference title for all movie enthusiasts.

The Shining has its up and downs but I honestly preferred the book over the movie but I still loved the movie. This movie’a cover art was better than its steel book haha.

Warner Bros goes for the crown

As a collector, this 4K UHD SteelBook of The Shining is a must-buy. I popped in the 4K disc and was stunned at how great the video quality is. It's very film-like, as movies should be, with little-to-no digital noise reduction, making the movie feel... like a movie. The colors look vivid, and everything looks crystal clear. There's plenty of film grain as well, making this 4K UHD disc feel something like a 1 to 1 copy of a 35mm reel. I love it because it's identical to how films were presented in theaters. The audio quality is also spectacular. It's not a Dolby ATMOS track, but we do get a DTS track that has plenty of punch with bass, clear dialogue, and surround sound effects. Everything Warner Bros has remastered for 4K UHD and Blu-ray thus far, from The Matrix to Batman, has sounded excellent, and The Shining is no exception. It would have been nice to also have the original audio on here as an option, but it's not a deal-breaker. If you're a fan of the film, or have a 4K TV and a good surround sound system, this is one of those 4K Blu-ray titles that is worth checking out. I look forward to buying more of WB's 4K Blu-ray releases as long as they continue to put out this level of quality.

I Really Enjoyed Watching This Movie. This is the Story of a man who Needed a Brake. Life Can Really be Demanding, Especially When YOU'RE Married And Have Children. He FINALLY Got A Job, He Loved. But THERE Was A Catch. But You Must Take This Job, First. Then Only Will You Learn About It's Mystery. The Whole Family Loved This Job, With All It's Perks, FOR MONTHS. Until THINGS Started TO Get Weird. The Wife Insisted THEN, that They, ESPECIALLY the Child, Needed TO Leave This Hotel. This Made The Man Angry. Because This Man FINALLY Found a Job He Loved. What Will This Man And His Family Do? THIS MOVIE WAS SO GOOD! THAT THIS MAN, JACK NICHOLSON, WON THE ACADEMY AWARDS FOR THE BEST MALE ACTOR OF THAT YEAR. BRAVO TO THE ACTORS AND ACTRESSES OF THIS MOVIE. KUDOS TO THE DIRECTOR OF THIS MOVIE. THANK YOU. PEACE!

    The dream 4K disk!

The shining is a Stanley Kubrick classic and for good reason, this film takes the horror genre and flips it on its head. The result is a wonderful piece of precise and delicate slow burning piece of art from Mr Kubrick. It’s one of my favorites form the master filmmaker and I would recommend it to anyone. But what you’re really here is for the 4K review, and just let me say it doesn’t disappoint, the visuals here are excellent and a huge upgrade form the previous blu ray, you can tell the amount of effort and precision was almost the same as Mr Kubricks when originally creating this classic. I think he would be proud. I would recommend this to anyone who loves 4K and filmmaking in general.

Amazing transfer for one of my all-time favorites!

    Posted .

The Shining is one of my all time favorite films, so over the years I've seen it in theaters, purchased it on VHS, DVD, blu-ray, Steelbook and now 4K. I was hesitant to buy the 4K but after reading so many great reviews I picked it up during Black Friday when it was only $9.99. Video is crystal clear...you can see the crunchy texture of the snow, patterns in furniture and on walls I've never noticed suddenly emerged, the flowing blood is a rich deep red...colors are gorgeous and the array of sounds that are part of the score sounded so lifelike they made my hair stand on end. I could prattle on for pages about how amazing this transfer looks and sounds, but to sum it up...absolutely worth a double, triple, or even a quadruple dip. No matter how many copies you already own you still need this version in your library. Keep the others for collectible purposes if you want, but this is the one you'll be watching!

The Shining - 1980 Foul Language Need tv Guardian

    |
    Posted .

In several ways I enjoy the 1997 version better than this original, for one the 1997 doesn't have the foul language like this one does. I debated between a 3 and 4 star for a few reasons, & not because Stephen King hated this version of it. 3 star because of all the foul language in it, there is no need to have such foul language in a move (or book or anything) to get a point across. I hadn't watched it in a while, even though I like The Shining, I had forgotten just how much foul language was in it, I will be getting a tv guardian before watching it again. 4 star because of the graphics and it is an original. Something has to be unbearable terrible for me to give it 0-2 stars.

I have never seen the original Shining movie but have always heard about it and/or referenced to it so I decided to finally pick it up especially being part of Best Buy's Deal of the Day and in collectible SteelBook form factor too! I wouldn't say that the movie is that scary but is definitely a thriller and as far as picture quality goes, it looks okay even in 4K but not spectacular. Overall, I enjoyed watching this classic movie and I can finally say that I've watched it!

The Shining, always good, BETTER in 4K

This is a favorite movie from years ago and the new 4K rendering really increased my enjoyment. Glad to have added it to my increasing 4K library. Jack Nicholson is very scary indeed in this flick, what a great acting job, and the little boy is amazing. Shelley Duvall is about as weird as ever! Would buy again for sure. We don't have our sound system set up aside from what came with the new Sony Brava TV, which is decent, so I won't comment separately on the sound but I suspect if you have a home theater sound setup you'll be very happy with this one.

    The Shining Shines!

    |

Owned for 1 year when reviewed.

This 4k-release of The Shining is nothing short of a revelation. It looks as though it was shot (on film!) yesterday, not in 1980. Kubrick was obsessive about every aspect of his shoots and we should be happy about that; the performances by the actors are by now legendary, but what stands out to me is the meticulousness and sheer genius of Kubrick; this is a disc to treasure and should be in every film-buff's collection!

Fantastic film. Terror and suspense in all the right places. The bluray transfer is perfect and the 4K is just as great if not better! Stanley Kubrik is a definite genius as the film holds up years later.

There’s only so much you can really advance the quality of a movie from this era, but the conversion to 4K is well done. Happy to have it apart of my collection! A classic Stephen King horror flick.

The Shining was and is Stanley Kubrick's Magnum Opus. Possibly the best horror movie ever, besides Psycho. The movie is so good, it has made it's way into the world's subconscious. If you are able to simply see an image of the carpet in the hallways of The Shining and get a chill down your spine, the Kubrick more than did his job well. This is the kind of movie that needs repeated viewings so that you may be able to pick up on something you may have missed the last time you watched it. In my opinion, The Shining and Batman from 1989 were Jack Nicholson's best 2 movies. An absolute must see!

Great movie and great transfer to 4k, best its ever looked. It doesn't look like a new digital movie so it doesn't look as good as the newest movies coming out of Hollywood, but it does retain a nice film quality as the director intended. If you already own the blu ray, upgrading may not be worth it, unless your a huge fan of the movie and want the best it can be
