I wavered between giving this season 5 stars or only 4. There were a few lackluster episodes here which simply didn't hold my interest.
But I really had to shell out that 5th star because this season features (in my opinion) some of the best shows in the series.
"Legacy of Hate" introduces the Grainger family to Shiloh ranch and offers Jeremy Slate as a sleazy villain. If you're in the mood for a well crafted tearjerker, 'Melanie' will do just fine.
"Trail to Ashley Mountain" crams guest stars Martin Milner, George Kennedy, Steve Carlson, Gene Evans, Jackie Coogan and Hugh Marlowe into the same phenomenal episode.
And 'The Modoc Kid" is a taut, tense hostage situation classic,
presenting a young Harrison Ford as well as scenery-chewing performances by John Saxon.
If you're into Westerns, don't let the hefty price tag on 'The Virginian' put you off. Get it.
