Great movie, but not for the faint at heart

Scorsese delivers a raunchy, comedic take on American greed. DiCaprio and Hill deliver great performances that suck you right in. My only complaint is that the movie is kind to its anti-heroes, making the audience sympathetic to their plight. It doesn't really spend too much time actually exploring the real victims who got scammed. That being said, it is an entertaining movie. It does feel a little long after a few views, but the movie continues to entertain. This is not a movie you want to watch with your parents as it doesn't shy away from showing the excesses of early 90's Wall Street. As far as the picture quality, the movie looks good and it sounds good too. It benefits from being a recent release. I haven't had a chance to view it on a 4K TV but it does look good in 1080p.

    Martin at his finest again

It earns its R rating and then some, so don't watch it with the kids. But it does it all with both wicked glee and exquisite craftsmanship. Where to begin ... The script crackles in the air, and the actors are giving it their all, including DeCaprio channeling the James Cagney of Public Enemy and White Heat. Rich in directorial torches bearing the signature of Scorsese, it has his familiar arc of towering guilt depicted in loving detail before it is ultimately brought down, though unrepentant and without a scrap of absolution or redemption. The wreckage is total, and yet at the end you see the "hero" pick himself up and start afresh in a roomful of his next suckers-to-be. You're absolutely on the edge of your seat for all three hours, and I found myself strangely uplifted by the whole wretched experience! A troubling study of voracious ambition and moral decay, and its seductive effect on everything in its path. Great selection of songs and recordings -- there's background music pretty much throughout. The movie is great, but I give the disc only 4 stars because it has no commentary soundtrack or extra features, which is really a shame because there is a lot of factual background i will have to look elsewhere to find. After all these years, Martin continues to thrill and astonish. He's the best.

The American dream or the American nightmare

    Posted .

The wolf is known as both a social creature amongst its kind, and particularly within its pack, and the devourer of anything else that gets in its way. It's an attractive but fearsome animal. It's sleek, refined, capable, and very dangerous. It's the perfect metaphor for the man who notoriously rose to power in the 1980s stock brokerage scene, the man who made himself a fortune and guided others to countless millions by choosing the right friends, knowing his enemies, and pouncing on every opportunity with the cunning, smarts, and determination necessary to not crush the competition but to rise to the top of his field, to quite literally become the "king of the world," or at least the world his vast fortune but narrow focus had built. But as these stories tend to reveal, his meteoric ascendancy wasn't built only on sweat, smarts, and lawful business practices. -- no matter how destructive -- that might even make Gordon Gekko stop and consider the ramifications. Director Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street is notoriously vulgar and frank yet beautifully crafted and endlessly captivating in its recreation of a story that validates the dangers in too much of a good thing. Of course, whether anything in Jordan Belfort's life can be considered "good" is the secret little subtext beneath the chaos.

The Wolf of Wall Street was the Animal House of Wall Street. I wince because the victims are so easily forgotten in this drama. I found this movie was seductive octane for the greed I have in me. Scorsese would have made a bigger movie if the victims could have had a face. I wonder--- without this movie what would Belfort be to the public today? I am afraid despite all the morality lip service I hear about this movie---this movie will raise Belfort to some mythical stature. As a figure he will be the bad boy of Wall Street you might want to shake hands with because of how deviously clever he was? Belfort's tale is grim. Very grim. I don't want him to suffer more for what he did. I just hope this movie doesn't propagate more ignorance. Of special note: Matthew McConaughey's chest thumping scene--- Whew... Pure Gold. You could see the whole story in his drunk eyes.

    Hedonism on Wall Street...

Many positive and negative things have been said about this film since its release in theaters. Firstly I would say that like other films made about criminals these characters in this film are not supposed to be sympathetic. If viewers find themselves relating to some of them in this film it is due to Terence Winter’s great writing and Martin Scorsese’s equally great directing. Both have experience with presenting bad people that never the less seem interesting or at least interesting enough to watch in a film or television series. This film is about the extreme excesses surrounding the world of Wall Street focusing on one firm that seems to take that excess even further. These characters are despicable people yet are entertaining to watch as they spiral downward like in most great crime films. These criminals just happen to be white collar. The best way to watch this is to simply sit back and watch this circus of depravity without taking it too seriously. That may be tricky considering it is a true story and the man most responsible is out of prison and now making money off of his story. Hopefully he will donate his proceeds to charity, but I doubt it. Some people are just shameful opportunists.

It was a crazy time in the stock market. Drugs were all around and penny stock fraud was rampant. The SEC was slow to respond.

Old school steelbook containing a good movie

This movie is pretty good, not excellent, but still pretty good. If you like Martin Scorsese type movies like Casino and Goodfellas, then you know what you are getting into. As, it follows the same structure, but in this case the corruption is penny stocks and wall street. The Steelbook is old school, and has a line down the center of the spine. I am not sure I like it. But, the image is taken from the movie, so it fits well. And, it comes with a digital copy. Recommended.
