After taking a long break from the gym, my first leg day left me limping everywhere. My quads, hamstrings, even calves were so sore I could barely walk down stairs. I was hopeful that the theragun mini might help me recover faster, and honestly, it exceeded my expectations.
Within a minute of turning it on, the heated attachment started to loosen up my muscles while the percussion worked deeper than I expected from such a compact device. The combination of heat and massage made a huge difference, it didn’t just mask the soreness, it actually helped my legs feel like they were releasing all that tightness built up from squats and lunges.
It’s super easy to hold and target different muscle groups, and the battery life easily lasts through several full-body sessions. I also love that it fits in my gym bag and doesn’t sound like a power tool when I use it while watching TV.
I found the included diagrams useful for targeting muscle groups, I assume that the company has put legit research into the patterns they recommend for recovery and I felt like they were effective. I wish they easily fit inside the travel case though, seems kinda silly that if left inside the little holder they arrive in, that it doesn’t neatly fit inside the travel case. A bit of an oversight, but you can cram them in there, just takes a bit more effort than it should.
I haven’t had to travel or fly yet, but I will make sure to toss it in my bag and give their travel recovery recommendations a try. It helps loosen up sore muscles so I’m pretty confident it will help loosen up cramps from sardine can sized airplanes.

This is my second Therabody product. I’ve had a Theragun Prime for the last year or so and man what a game changer it was. But it has a large footprint, and sometimes it is nice to have a smaller massager for those times when one is headed out of town or even needs to loosen up the tight muscles that occur at work while at work. Enter the Theragun Mini Plus, which is more portable but still has the same excellent massage capabilities. It loses the changeable heads that the Prime has, but adds heat adjustments which take it to an even higher level.
The Mini Plus also has smartphone capability via Therabody’s app, but to be honest, I don’t use it. The app will talk you through different massage areas and techniques, if that is something you are looking for.
In use, the Mini Plus is a gem. After a full charge, I used it for around an hour straight on medium massage with medium to high heat and had no issues with that charge getting things done. Battery life is another definite plus here. I have no complaints about the Theragun Mini Plus and highly recommend it. It may be considered a portable massager, but don’t let it’s smaller size fool you… This unit is very capable.

Unboxing - straight forward. Everything needed is in the case, and there are cards with illustrations and directions in a separate small box outside of the case.
Signing up for the app was straightforward. No nags for phone numbers or anything, just an email address to tie it to and to verify after you've done so.
The app was fine though during the initial setup with just one problem. I prefer to use my 11" iPad Pro M5 in landscape orientation - and that worked fine for the initial two videos but once past those, and into the next part with the app, you can't go horizontal anymore, because they hardcode it to portrait apparently and in landscape you can't get at the NEXT buttons. At least once you get past all of THAT, then it works again in either orientation.
They include several cards with illustrations on the body where to massage, and how long. They have different situations, like Travel, Lower Body Recovery, Full Body Warm-Up, Upper Body Recovery. But there seems to be some QA missing, I had TWO page 2's for full body warmup, and NO page 2 for Upper Body Recovery... And this was a big disappointment - when I got with support I was blown off and told to use the app. Well, I may not WANT to use the app, it would be nice to have what was supposed to be shipped with it. But they won't bother. So that was a star lost right there for unhelpful support.
The app shows the battery life, in my case it arrived with 68% of a charge. But charging it for a few hours on a 20w USB C charger never charged it - it LOST charge. Down to 43% after two hours of blinking as it supposedly charged. I left it alone and tried it a few days later, and had it charging for another 45 minutes and that time it was up to 89%. I finally hit 100% but it took some finessing and patience since it just seemed to not charge every time I had it connected. So even my charging experience has been flaky.
The power LED breathes while it's charging, and goes solid when it's done. But it took me days and multiple attempts before I saw that solid LED light showing it was fully charged.
At first I wasn't sure how to go about using this without the app. But I did some various button testing and found a long press on the power button finally enables manual mode. I like the guided sessions you can do with the app, which shows you when you're using too much pressure, or not enough, and the heat levels and such. And it tells you when to move to the next body part. But I also want to be able to just fire it up and use it manually.
The app guiding is straightforward though and very easy to follow. When you want the guided steps for what to do and how long, and when to move on, this does the job.
Now, I've gone through a few dozen massage guns, and still have probably half a dozen various models that I've kept, including ones with heat. And the heat and cold levels on a few of them is impressive, so this had a high bar to meet.
And this one seems to be on par with the others I have. Heat can be felt, and it gets warm enough to help with the massage therapy.
Unfortunately this only comes with the heated end. I see the cold attachment sold separately with mixed reviews so not sure I'll bother picking that one up since I have others already that can do cold with the massage, and the cold one for this is a bit pricey.
Some of the massage guns I had were smaller sized as well, but only one ever seemed to have the power of the larger ones, most other smaller ones or mini ones just lacked Oomph.
This smaller one has the same amount of power that most of the other smaller ones I have exhibit. One of the ways I test massage guns is how hard it is to STOP it by holding it in one hand and pressing it against the other until you overcome its ability to cycle in and out. I've only ever had one that I simply couldn't stop, it went on and on anyway, even if at a slower rate. This one stops about as quickly or as easily as any of the mini massage guns. But the force stopping it is more than you're likely to use during a massage, so it's not a flaw or anything. But for the price I had hoped it would at least outperform some of the other cheaper ones. But it could not.
The shape is relatively easy to hold, but I wish it fit in the hand better. Even though it has a bit of a depression in the center it's still not a great "fit" in the palm while holding it.
Manual use is simple though, three levels of power for the massage, three levels of heat for the heating element.
Once you hold the power button to turn it on, it's just single quick presses to change the setting manually or another long press to power it off.
The case is alright, and will hold this fine. It includes a USB C cable as well. But the case does NOT have space for the cold attachment if you end up getting it.
While charging, the power button's LED breathes, so you can see it's charging. Apparently it turns off completely when fully charged.
During the setup of the app, it will ask you to indicate which types of activities you do. This is actually pretty handy since that is how it sets up the main menu with the options for you to select from for the guided massage sessions. In my case, boxing, weightlifting, and walking. And you can always add a manual activity as well.
While it is solid, the performance for this price point just doesn't seem worth it compared to some of the other mini massage guns I have from other vendors that don't cost this much. And the lack of support to send a simple card in the mail, something they could've done with a stamp and an envelope, was disappointing for something you pay this much for. Toss in the inconsistent charging, and this is something I just can't see justifying the cost.
