The app that is required to adjust settings and use the camera functionality is hot trash. Purchased to replace my old Thinkware camera, returned the next day. The concept is great, the fit and finish looks good. However the functionality was such a let down at the price.

Installed front/rear one (2CH), but Wouldn't recommend this device. I've been using only Thinkware for more than 10years, but this dashcam?? No. It PARTIALLY works with 'parking motion' meaning it DOESN'T WORK 'continuously' It has a time lag about 40-60secs. Once record 'one motion', it takes at least 40-60 secs for the next motion detection. IT SHOULDN'T BE!

Bought this and installed it the same day. When I drove with it it would take 5 minutes to fully start up and begin operating. After that every 45 seconds it would begin a new recording and disconnect from GPS.

I bought 3 of these dashcams just a couple years ago and 2 of them have already craped the bed. They were the most expensive cams when I purchased them but after the warranties expired, so did these junkie cams. Don't waste you money! I'd rather buy cheaper ones and replace as needed.

Think ware Q800 Pro front dash cam

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Overall the Q800 Pro exceeded my expectations, video quality is excellent, the Wi-Fi connection is flawless, the design makes it easy to hide from view for discreet observation and the numerous other functions. The dash-cam is built very well, the body is not a heavy bulky plastic I have seen in other comparable dash-cams. This does not mean they will not work as well but for me the feel of quality is there not to mention the camera is housed in a metal body which adds to the quality of the build for me. Compact design makes this dash-cam easy to fit above the rear view mirror in the dot matrix of my truck (2008 Dodge Ram). It is out of the way and the LED indicator lights are not a nuisance either. The fact there is no screen to view also makes this perfect for use, I think it is a great safety aspect when it comes to driving. In other reviews I have read, some complain about the Wi-Fi or cloud not working at all or it is spotty and that you cannot view the dash-cam recording while driving. Again, for me this is a non-issue but it is also another safety function that Thinkware has put into driver safety. There are more than enough distractions to deal with while driving only to add one more. Still, live view lets you see the alignment of the camera from where you place it on your front wind shield. You do need to reconnect to the Wi-Fi after you return to your vehicle, but this is easily accomplished using the app. I am not using the cloud feature to track my vehicle; this requires two different devices one in the vehicle and one to track it. Besides I Am the only driver of my vehicle. The resolution of the video (QHD 2K 1440p), in both day and night it is very clear, clean and easy to make out a license plate number. The day time footage comes out vibrant, using the zoom function in the Thinkware viewer (PC or MAC) you can bring the plate into frame. Even vehicles off to the side, the plates can be made out. Like nearly all dash-cams, once the vehicle is beyond distance of five vehicle lengths then the image becomes harder to view with details, the numbers on a plate can still be made out they are just nor as sharp. Still the fact that the video captures some of the sharpest images I have seen in a dash-cam, it will definitely help you with an insurance claim to prove fault. Night images do show some grain or noise and I have yet to try and clear this up using photo editing software. Details are lighted up though in the peripheral, it is still not like daylight but there are identifiable details. Plate numbers can be seen in the same distance as I noted for daylight video though the grain or noise can leave some shapes, numbers or letters not easily identifiable. I do like the impact sensor this dash-cam comes with, I have it set to low on my dash-cam and going over potholes will activate it. If you live in an area where the roads are not maintained well (San Antonio) then this may come in handy to support a complaint against your city for not normal wear and tear on your vehicle. I can only imagine how often it would activate if I set it for the most sensitive. The audio warnings were a nuisance to me at first, I went into the settings and reduced the volume to 1. You can still hear the audio warnings but you can drown them out with your music, just try to avoid becoming another state farm insurance commercial. The GPS is also built in and I find this a well worth while feature versus external GPS attachments. In the Thinkware viewer (PC or MAC) you can set up the video feeds to display your speed, location, and time. This can also be accomplished using the app. Storage for your videos comes in 16, 32, 64, and 128GB. My dash-cam came with the 32GB micros SD card. Something to note here, if you use cloud you have greater storage options. Still, for me this is not a big deal as the 32GB micro SD card is more than enough storage. I use the phone app to download or delete files to free up space. I drive to and from work Monday through Friday five days a week, round trip is 30 minutes and I can record for five hours in 2K on the 32GB micro SD card. Really no need to for me to clear it out daily, but if you are planning a long road trip or your commute is long then a bigger micro SD card may be a worthwhile investment. Thinkware does not recommend using other brands of micro SD cards, they do cost less, but the formatting of the SD card Thinware provides is specific to their product. This does not mean you cannot use a more cost-effective brand micro SD card it will still work; it comes down to formatting. In all the reviews I have read previously on this dash-cam none stated that other micro SD cards malfunction, though if you go cheap you get what you pay for. Other featured of this dash-cam are, Geo Fencing, Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS/ uFCWS), Front Vehicle Departure Warning (FVDW), Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Red Light Camera Alert, and Speed Camera Alert. I do have the last two turned on (red light and speed camera alert). Living in San Antonio I suppose it would be a safe bet to have the other features running. Overall, I think this dash-cam is excellent, for the price point ($299.99) it offers a lot of features and functionality that other similar dash-cams only offer as add-ons or at an extra cost. Some may debate the 4K versus 2K versus 1080 but I think the 2K is a very affordable and cost-efficient middle ground. I would like to see the ability to add your vehicles plate number on the overlay of the video and snap shots as well as enlarging the font too.

This is my second thinkware dashcam. I sold my truck and was told by the installation place that I wouldn’t be able to use my camera on a different vehicle if I ever sold my truck (FALSE INFO). So, I had to purchase the same camera again, it’s my favorite style dashcam. The second one is much quieter, which I really like!!! Seems like they improved it since purchasing the first one. I HIGHLY recommend this camera because you can’t see what’s going on, which doesn’t distract you. It’s sleek and doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb.

    Average camera for average price

    Posted .

It's a decent camera for the price. When I bought it in mid 2019, I was looking for something decent but not crazy expensive. I wasn't expecting full 4K like an expensive TV, but another review mentions the fact it's a little difficult to read license plate when in motion. So it would be nice if it was a little clearer in that regard. The overall video quality is decent, you can see basically everything with the wide angle lens. I like that it can install close to the headliner and behind/in front of the rear view mirror, that way it's not in my line of sight. It also doesn't have an external screen for viewing, which is nice as it doesn't distract from the driving. However, sometimes it would be nice to make sure of what you're seeing, but I'd rather not have a small screen in my face. There was an issue with the app connecting to the device a few months ago, but I had to reset/update the device in order for it to work properly. A nuisance and super frustrating, but nothing terrible. Like having to unplug your wifi router once in a while to get it to work properly. One thing that i wish was quicker is the file transfer from continuous recording to saved video from the app. Not that it takes minutes, but it's all stored on the same micro SD card, and would be nice if it was as simple as a file transfer on a computer. Someone else mentioned a feedback noise/audio thumping on the files that are saved on your phone, and it happens to mine also. Not sure what that's about. As said in the title, it's an average camera for an average price, nothing spectacular, but better than nothing.
