Customers are saying

Customers praise the VIA 1515M 5" GPS for its ease of use, accurate GPS navigation, and lifetime map updates. Many appreciate the screen size and find the device to be a good value for the price. While some users noted that the battery life could be improved and the volume could be higher, the positive feedback on navigation and features outweighs these minor drawbacks.

    Nice upgrade over older Garmin

We have a 5 year old Garmin that has served us well but didn't have lifetime maps. We don't travel afar often but were finding new roads that the GPS didn't have on file so time for an upgrade. I picked this TomTom because of the combination of price (on sale) and features like lifetime maps. It is a step-up in size from the 4.3" Garmin and has the split screen for turnoffs which has already been useful. We also like that it displays current time and expected time of arrival which the Garmin didn't do. It takes a while to get used to the particulars of searching and saving destinations but seems fairly intuitive for the most part. The one thing I am concerned about is the integrated mounting system. The suction cup was the first thing to break on our Garmin but we just bought a whole new mounting system for that because it was separate from the GPS itself. Not sure how this can be repaired if that happens with the TomTom.

    Good GPS for General Use

This GPS is good for anyone looking for standard navigation. It is easy to use and has a very user friendly menu. Also, I prefer the TomTom over Garmin due to the fact that it compensates for tracking error better in certain regions of Texas where the satellite signal is weak. Believe me; this is a real headache with the Garmin systems fully stop to navigate when it thinks you are on the wrong path and you miss your turn and cannot access any of the other data needed to move through the region. Also, there are a lot of options to adjust how you travel such as allowing use of toll roads, fastest time or shortest distance settings and a whole array of other functions that are very useful. It also will recalculate routes based on the flow of traffic and can save some time when trying to circumnavigate a large city. The Bad: I had to replace a TomTom that was about 7 years old. I use the GPS for Offroad for my job and don't care for these changes. One, the volume is not as loud as the previous device. When driving over gravel or dirt roads, it is hard to hear. Two, the mounting ring is now built into the device, this used to be external, and the factory mounts failed on me after about 1-1.5 years until I found an upgrade on Amazon. I haven't had the device long enough yet to see if this is the case on this one, but it looks the same as the old TomTom mount.Three, It was more difficult to find the GPS coordinates of my location, but this was solved through an advanced setting, and is actually easier to access now. Four, offroad tracking doesn't work as well as the old device, i.e. it is harder to find my target coordinates.

Thanks for the review OffRoadDude! We're really glad that you like you new VIA. We're glad to hear you like a lot of the features such as the traffic re-routing. However, I'm sorry to hear you had some difficulty getting your GPS coordinates, if you need help with anything else let us know, I also have a handy link to the user guide: http://bit.ly/1hk0NAT. The same goes for any problems with the mount, if it suffers any weaknesses or problems just give us a shout. Cheers, Sam at TomTom. TomTomInc.

Easy to operate, great picture, nice size screen, easy on and off switch, nice to be able to stick on windshield or mount, good price, like the life time maps, and the updates I will get when available

This is my 3rd GPS - a Garmin in 2007 (map updates were too expensive), a Magellan in 2011 that crashed twice (free updates, but worst customer service ever), and now this unit. I don't use a GPS often - most of the places I go are familiar. But when I do I want accuracy and clear instructions. This unit has a nice big screen, very good graphics, and great instructions with a clear display of the turns and lanes. It's not expensive, but offers a lot for the money with lifetime maps. One plus - of my three units this one seems to work the best when it's not attached to the windshield, both in my house to program my next trip, and in the car if I put it on the console.it has no problem finding the satellites. But one big minus - the suction cup mount is attached to the unit, and my sports car has a steeply-sloped windshield which forces me to be a contortionist getting it in place in the lower left corner of my windshield and then turning the knob to lock it. It's so difficult that I just ordered TomToms vent mount for it. But overall it's a good unit for the price and easy to use.

Used this device when I traveled to Virginia and really liked it speaking out the street names that I needed to turn on. It really put me at ease traveling in an unfamiliar area. Also it was accurate and the fact that it will give me lifetime map updates , I can see using and owning this device a long time.

If you are used to Garmin GPS, TomTom takes some time to get used to. I prefer the look of Garmin map but the TomTom has nice features. Works good and gets me to my destination without issues. Price was lower than a similar Garmin with similar features. I would buy another TomTom again.

I have had another GPS in the past. The TomTom was far more accurate. The best part is not only does it tell you when your coming up on a turn, it also tells you which lane you should be in. I found this very helpful.

Bought this for my wife, who is reluctant to use the GPS option on her phone for her job, which requires extensive travel locally. Some of the options I would have liked were live traffic updates and voice recognition for navigation, but at this price point the device is packed with everything else you would want and expect. The initial map/software update was over 3GB in size, and took about 90 minutes to download and install. The user interface is very intuitive, and the maps are current (there is a major interchange that is currently under modification near me, and the map actually displays both the current and future exit ramps, with the future ones showing as closed). The only drawback I have, and it is minor, is the suction cup window mount needs to click when rotating the attachment ring. It's a bit stiff, which may loosen up with use, but if you don't get the click it will fall after a short time.

Very good GPS. I like the improvements that TomTom has made. The split screen that displays road signs is very helpful. The only negative that I have noticed so far is that the spoken info is not loud enough for old ears. This one makes 4 TomTom GPS units that we own and I like it best except for speaker column.

I bought this last minute to go on a road trip to Florida and it was awesome. I owned a TomTom before with a bigger screen but I found this item to be better. The price was good too. Deff will recommend this to anyone looking to buy an affordable and easy to use GPS.

Overall, this is a really great GPS. It re-routes very quickly, and repeats directions back to you clearly. It allows enough time to anticipate turns and the volume goes up high enough that you can have the radio on to listen to music at the same time. The only thing I didn't like about it is that the battery life is only about 2 1/2 hours. Not a big deal though.

I bought the GPS the night before our road trip to Florida. It was easy to set up and update through my computer. We made it to Florida with no problems. Once we got to Florida is when the GPS kept telling me to go through their fast lane when it came to the tolls which later on I noticed I didn't have an Sunpass to go through. All in all it is a good GPS and it wont leave you stranded.

I'm happy with my selection. I got it for $99 in a special deal and it worth it. Very easy to use and precise. My only complain would be the embedded base. You have to take the complete package on and off. If you wil leave it attached, then no issue at all.

I used my new TomTom for my vacation to S.Calif. Driving in Los Angeles is a nightmare but my new Tomtom made it effortless for my niece, who is 15, to help me navigate the 20 lane highway with ease. It was very easy to program &manuver around the different screens efficently. I really appreciated the bells when traffic cameras were @intersections because in LA they don't post signs like they do in Pa. This product is easy to use, compact, &worth the purshase price.

TomTom makes great products. They are easy to use. I find the lane navigation helpful. The screen is big enough, so personally I don't think the bigger version is necessary. I gave this one back though and got the TomTom Start 50M instead. I realized that would be good enough and I don't need the maps for Canada etc. The VIA 1515M has a crisper screen, the cable is located in a more convenient spot and it was quicker to attach and reattach. Also, it showed the speed limit more frequently, so it seemed as if there is more data available for the software. If I had the extra money, I would go for this but because the functions are very similar, I ultimately decided that the START 50M is good enough.

This is a very good GPS, it is very easy to use. It was the best option for the price range. The 2 things that made give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it would be nice to have a software in my computer so I could program my routes and POI (thou it is not difficult to make it in the device) and the accuracy is a little off when you are driving In or Out of parking lots, sometimes it will detect as if you are still driving inside the parking lot if the street is too close, but it is not a big deal for somebody that has a little sense of direction, it will recalculate immediately as soon as it recognizes you are not in the parking lot anymore (just drive 1 block or less). Cheap, easy to use, lifetime updates... Great if you are not too picky with 3~5 yards off actual position

I love this GPS. The voice and the accuracy of the GPS is awesome. one thing i really like about this GPS is the user friendly interface. This is my second Tomtom GPS. I tried garmin GPS but didnt like as much as Tomtom. Although touch screen on garmin was better, almost like a new smartphones. I didnt like the colorscheme of garmin though.. Tomtom's colorscheme is simple and sobar. Tomtom's new series isnt that impressive. May be i am addicted to the old tomtom gps series and dont want kind of 3d appearance.
